Title: The Otaku Scale. How Otaku are you?
Post by: gammaraptor on February 09, 2012, 05:46:04 AM
If you had to rate yourself on how otaku you are from 0 (not into anime, manga etc at all) to a 10 (o.o hardcore, like twice as hardcore as konata.) Where would you fit?

I'm around 6.5. Almost a 7 once I start spending more money xD. Anything past 8 will be really bad for me.

So.... According to this site: http://www.armory.com/tests/anime.html (http://www.armory.com/tests/anime.html)
I'm 28.0% otaku corrupt. So, I'm not willing to yet let it take over my life. That's pretty accurate.

The more corrupt you are, the more otaku you are.

I thought there would be a test.

I'll say 5.5

Well, I've spent several hundreds of dollars on just anime figures over that past several months, and I've learned Japanese up to a decent level. I've also set up a flat-screen TV with surround sounds in my room (which I've rearranged to be acoustically symmetrical) for watching anime. I almost always follow more than 5 anime series per season, and I live-stream each new episode when it airs in Japan.

I'd say I'm about 3/10.

I guess I'd be around a 2. So far, I just buy manga from bookstores. Already I have a couple of shelves full of manga volumes (plus Haruhi Suzumiya light novels); I don't know exactly how much I've spent over the years growing my collection, but it's probably at least $300. (No first editions or anything of the sort; I buy to read (and support the publishers).)
If I were to start watching anime again, I'd be a 3.

And here I was, expecting a link to those website where you had to ask bunch of questions and a very accurate scoring came out describing one's 'Otaku level'.

What does one make an Otaku again?

In fairness I probably hide my power level too much, but then I do play my music in the car with other people around, my music, don't like it get out - but most of my mates actually do like the tracks I choose  :V

I did learn a few bits of Japanese but to be honest I'm not really good at it at all. I don't buy anything from Japan, I don't have that kind of expendable cash. If I did, it'd all be music. I don't see the point in buying books or videos that I can't understand, I don't pretend I'll ever be an expert in this.

I dunno, a 3 or something? Then again if watermelonz is a 3, then I'm a negative number.

I was also honestly expecting the same thing, but I can't really rate myself without being slightly biased or dishonest about it. Truthfully told, I cater to these so-called otaku through my dealings with the anime/mango kind, mostly through translation work and the like. I wouldn't say I was obsessed or extremely into it though unless it's something like yuri but that plays less to the fact I'm into anime/mango and more into my intraspections. I have, however, been to Comiket (C72~73) for what it's worth.

I am sure if you google you'll find already existing quizzes or tests.

I was also honestly expecting the same thing, but I can't really rate myself without being slightly biased or dishonest about it. I see Otaku kind of a "NIPPON" naming for our western terminology: Nerd or Geek.

Yeah was hoping for a test just to be curious on what their definition of an Otaku is :V

If it was just myself though, I'd rate myself a 2. As much as I like the idea of anime, I never had the time to watch them :< Most I have are a couple of manga (Azumanga Omnibus, Lucky Star 6, and some Death Note) as well as watched only a handful of anime.  Touhou stuff doesn't count does it?

And here I was, expecting a link to those website where you had to ask bunch of questions and a very accurate scoring came out describing one's 'Otaku level'.

Anyways, off to the main topic at hand.

Self-rating? Eh, I'd give more along the range of 0.5.

I seldom watch anim? anymore, nor am I interested in watching any. I do have a few manga and light novels, but they're more for language purposes rather than entertainment. As for games, I've only imported one game from Japan (GGX2^AC+, PSP version), and as of late (with thanks to playing most games on PC) I've bought games mostly from NA and EU developers, with JP ones being limited to iOS and doujin works.

As for the definition of otaku, well, let's say that mine pretty much marks them as devout Japanophiles, and that I find it distressing.

This (http://www.armory.com/tests/anime.html) looks pretty thorough, although is focuses specifically on anime otaku-ness. 200 questions, you just tick the box if the sentence applies to you.

Edit: Actually, it seems like it's a pretty old quiz. They're talking about video tapes and whatnot.

It's just old is all. Who the hell owns a laser disk player? Do people really keep their anime on VHS tapes?

I'd like to see a broader quiz on otaku-ness (anime, manga, games, cosplay, toy trains, whatever) with at least 100 questions. Maybe that's something to do tonight!

I'm probably a disaster. Anime cons, self-taught cosplay which I put several hours worth of thought and effort to each week, figurines, and other such crimes against humanity. I think I do well when in a normal environment because I never really bring the subject of such things up and can completely avoid such subjects in conversation, nor do I introduce it to people in any way. This doesn't stop me from flashing my Ran key chain that also has the Stop & Shop discount member tag attached to it when I go grocery shopping.

I'd probably rate myself between a three and a four. I have a few series I really get into, but in general I only have a casual interest in them.

If we brought games into the equation though, I'd raise myself to between a five and a six. I'm not one of those spend-a-holics who buys a new game every month (who the hell has that kind of money and time), but I keep a steady appetite of games.

I'd say about 5-6. I own a few series on DVD, and I've bought/won some merchandise/figurines. I'm not particularly given to public displays of my fandom (I haven't gotten around to cosplaying or anything), although I do intend to maybe put a mini-Nendoroid or something on my desk once I land a secure job.

I think this should be highly subjective.
If you are crazy enough to spend on Nendoroids: +1
if you are spending on figma: +2
If you are spending on cold cast figurines: +3
If you are spending on MG/PG Gunpla: +5 at least simply because how the fuck do you glue those fucking things together?

seriously, it should be tested with 'dedication' as a mean and averaged out by how often you do your other important life things.
and then substract the game, DVD, you own, and times how many hours you play them/per day.

This is probably what I do it with than say... using a quiz that is quite dated.
Title: Re: The Otaku Scale. How Otaku are you?

That's a bad quiz I think.

Owning a TV - 1 point
Referring to anime as anime - 1 point
Learning Japanese for the sole purpose of watching anime - 1 point

Those things shouldn't all be equal.

It gave me 30% currupt or something, but I was very liberal with some interpretations. The quiz didn't pay much attention to video games, and made no mention of visual novels. I think I'd rate myself around 8/10.

I tried the quiz, but I also found it to be very misplaced in some questions or are very limiting or not up to par. What can I say? It was submitted in 1998, which is to say, not too relevant in today's standards.

But in any case:

"Are you on any anime-related mailing lists?" - I suppose this and forums are very much the same, forums being the successors of mailing lists... Still, Touhou =/= anime, even though it is from Japan and inspired fanmade episodes of anime... Well, let's say that it counts.

Self-diagnosis: 0 out of 10 on otaku scale. I hardly ever watch animu or read mango. I even got tired of Touhou for the time being and mostly spend time on these forums reading stuff in Shrinemaiden Cafe or playing Minecraft with the fellow maidens in my free time when I am not banned for griefing.

Test diagnosis: core corruption at 11.5 per cent. Peculiarity at 14%.

Here's a quiz I quickly made up, for anyone who's interested.
Unless otherwise stated, all questions are worth 1 point.
There is no key, just bigger number = more otaku-ness.

1. Do you know what anime is?
2. Have you ever watched an anime?
3. Do you watch anime at least once per week?
4. Do you watch anime at least once per day?
5. Do you know what manga is?
6. Have you ever read a manga?

83 questions is tough to divide up by scoring, but how about:

0-11: Blissfully Unaware. You remember someone mentioning Pok?mon years ago, and thought it was a type of pasta.
12-23: The Edge Case. "I used to really like mecha when I was a kid." Probably has one working console, and an older one in the basement.
24-35: Casual Friday. Has weekly game time. Watches a couple series on streaming sites. Went to a con a couple years back, didn't buy anything.
36-47: My Hobbies Are Just Different. Likely has a favorite series, game, female character in an anime, and character in a video game. Visits local cons. Food becoming more microwavable.
48-59: Let Me Tell You Something About Precure. Follows a number of series, visits gaming boards, flies to cons. Not online most of the time yet.
60-71: Valkyrie Dwarf Has Ascended! Runs an anime blog, hosts a game server, can be found online on any number of IM clients and IRC channels. More myth than man.
72-83: So Long, Suckers. Lives in Japan, runs a doujin group that moves tremendous units at Comiket. Is interviewed by local media for his opinions on otaku culture, which are in turn quoted on thousands of blogs. Wins the little-known Nobel Prize for Eroge. Lives in a penthouse suite on top of a major hotel in downtown Tokyo, where maids serve him peeled grapes while a top manga artist sits in the corner, drawing and writing everything he sees.

Whoa, that test is incredibly old.  I thought OverCoat only shared it with me to make fun of how old I am.  I had to explain what Ani Mayhem was for him.

I used to be way more of an otaku than I am today.  I had my VHS tapes, I went to various cons and even hosted a radio show centered around jpop/rock/anime music.  Once I stopped doing the show, I lost interest because I had no one to share my hobby with.  This is changing however (I'm posting here).

I took the other test and got a 31.

your score was: 67

DESU_cake's test is.... well, strangely pinching on me.
on the question with how much spent on anime/etc I put down 12, because over the years I estimated to have spend well over 3000 or more on such things.

there is only one problem:
60-71: Valkyrie Dwarf Has Ascended! Runs an anime blog, hosts a game server, can be found online on any number of IM clients and IRC channels. More myth than man.
I don't really run an anime blog but I have a general blog. What are game servers? lol IM clients, my skype hasn't been on in ages, IRC yes.

I am much closer to 48-59: Let Me Tell You Something About Precure. Follows a number of series, visits gaming boards, flies to cons. Not online most of the time yet.
I certainly am this one actually, but I think I manage my time pretty damn well most of the time. Though when I catch up, I often abuse said time management.

---

So I propose to add these questions:

84: If you lack time to watch something today, or play games today, would you catch up the next day?
85: How long do you tend to catch up on? > 3 hours > 5 hours > 10 hours? (+1 for every increment of double the previous number)
86: Do you currently use an anime wallpaper?
87: Does all your devices have anime wallpapers/themes/ringtones/songs?
88: Do you actively tell people what song that is playing (if it is anime/Jrock/Jpop?
89: Do you play Rhythm games and listen to Eurotrash?
90: You think dancing is the same as Para Para Sakura and Rhythm games are just a means for you to get on 'So you think you can dance' Season xwhatever.
91: You have a tendency to eat and watch anime at the same time.
92: Given a chance, you would wear proudly your anime merchandises (Cat ears, anime T shirts) to anywhere, including but not limited to workplace/college/social gatherings.
93: If parents give you money, the first thing you think of is what sort of anime / merchandise / game to buy.
94: Actively expect friends/family to buy games/anime/merchandise as gifts for Xmas/new years/etc
95: You LARP regularly in front of the mirror in the bathroom, likely while wrap in a towel and still wet from the shower.
96: You have had whole night long sessions of marathoning a series or a game.
97: You still LARP while no one is watching, in public places.
98: At some point you have tried using charms and pick up lines from anime and games on real girls/guys that you tried to hit on (and failed/succeeded) (Success -10 points/failed +1)
99: You condition your hair so you probably look like an anime character with thick bunches of hair.
100: In most cases, while listening to a Jpop/Jrock/Anime song you tend to sing to it despite not really knowing the lyrics or what they mean.
101: You took this test and realized your despair (+0 points)

My friend is a 8/10. He constantly talks about anime and how I should draw, "Naruto" and "Sonic" shit. But of course, my rating is a low 3/10. Not that much into Anime. I only watch a few animes( 2-3 ) but never talk about it. I wanted to get figurines but mom won't let me. Also, I read a few mangas, liked it, but that's every 2 months or so. Does this mean I'm a failure?

EDIT: Actually, I'm a 3.8

25 on the first 83 questions on this new quiz, 28 overall. For questions 46-50, I simply substituted 'doujin' with 'Touhou' .

72. Do you ever view real-life events as though they were part of an anime?
73. Do you ever wish you lived inside an anime/manga/game?
Wait a minute -- I'm not in an anime?!?  :o

Wow, a completely different result than the previous quiz.

I'm a numberless but enthusiastic anime newbie but wasn't always that way.

I used to torment a young man I know by saying, "You're not watching those strange cartoons again, are you?" with added emphasis on the word 'cartoons'. "You're way, way too old for cartoons," I'd say, chuckling to myself. This went on for quite a while.

Anyway, one day he said to me, "They're not cartoons, they're anime and before you continue on with those comments, why don't you watch one so that you'll know what I'm talking about,".

I thought he had a point there. Though not fully convinced, I thought, at the very least, watching one or two would bolster my 'cartoon' theory so I figured I had nothing to loose...oh, boy, I was soooo naive  back then :)

Since I have watched the following (and counting) and probably others that fail to come to mind:

Last Exile
Noein
Madoka
Stellvia
Fate/Stay Night
Kamichu
Code Geass
Scrapped Princess
Bamboo Blade
And Azumanga Daioh, my all time favorite to date. Hey,what's not to love about Chiyo-chan?

I'm a numberless, anime convert and you know how shrill converts can be :) Also, If you have any suggestions for anime I just 'have to see', please let me know.

If I had to rate myself, I's probably have to say I'm about 40% or so, which is "Full-time otaku (past the point of no return)" on the website... that sounds about right.
*Takes the quiz thingy*
Hmm, ehh... I don't know if I should be embarrassed or proud of this, but I got 61%, which according to that website, makes me a "Shameless otaku!" ...
...
Well, either way, I'm a hardcore anime druggie... Yes indeed.

I'm 91% pure, and I was answering yes to technical nos too. (Like "do you name yourself online after an anime character". I said yes, even though Ghaleon isn't in any animes I know, Lunar has anime-style art, so I said yes...I also said yes to others that would be yes for Touhou, even though it's not technically anime >=P).

The test however, I think gives favoritism towards people strictly into anime. I think it's possible to be slightly "otaku" without necessarily being an anime nut by being big into anime-based videogames like myself, or for those people who are heavy into manga...Honestly have no clue if there are manga fans that don't like anime though.

I'd much rather read manga than watch anime, myself. Especially in certain dialogue/comedy driven genres manga is much better in my opinion.

And I was thinking the name Ghaleon was from Lunar Legend. Been ages since I played it. :derp:

I haven't actually played lunar legends yet since I don't own a PSP. But I've heard bad things about every lunar game that is newer than eternal blue. But yeah, same Ghaleon. Not anime, videogame, but...it's pretty much anime-inspired so I said yes.

The one I played was for GBA, not PSP. I don't know anything about the series other than that one game though, so maybe the PSP version is a remake.

Anyway, I think I'm going off topic here.
