Silvio Berlusconi is the skid mark in Europe's underwear, and the sooner he's gone, the better. I couldn't begin to get into everything wrong with this guy.

The Italian people still seem to like him enough that despite the lowering of his approval rating, it's not enough to consider him a "bad" politician. I don't think Italy will be rid of Burlesconi until he does something that REALLY pisses off Italy as a whole, which hasn't happened yet. :V

Well that, and he happens to own the bulk of Italian media, and the Mafia love him. It's not all on the Italian people.

So there was this massive gathering of people in Cairo anticipating something big from Egyptian president Mubarak. What was his speech like? More of the same, apparently. I don't know enough about what had circulated in their media lately to say if the people's wishes for this event were unfounded.

I use CNN as a "standard" source, but this stuff is bound to be everywhere online, so go to your news agency of choice.

Mubarak said he's stepping down, essentially.  He's transferring his power to his newly-elected VP until an election can be organized.

That's how I understand the current situation.

Al-Jazeera has been doing a great job following Egypt and Yemen.

I found Al-Jazeera's YT page less than an hour before the speech started. Most of what I'm hearing about recent events (as in the last couple days) is relatively new to me, but I had heard talks of a power transfer to the VP before today.

Fakeedit: Now the VP is speaking. Realedit: Nothing new from him either. Judging from the translation, his speech sounds even more blatantly against the people's wishes.

Reuters are a great wire service, no doubt.

EDIT: The Guardian is saying Mubarak has refused to step down. Includes video.

Best part is he has absolutely ZERO support from the military.  They've remained fairly neutral and honorable this entire time but they were the ones to first break the news that "all the protester demands were going to be met".  Shit is going to hit the fan hard.

Mubarak is a dictator, and like all dictators he see himself as completely necessary for the running of the country; they cannot grasp that the country can exist into the future without them. Of course this runs completely against the wishes of the people.
While I agree that he has no support with the military, unless the top brass of the armed forces turns revolutionary I doubt they will allow a bloody revolutions to occur since this is really the only way the current conflict might be resolved unless one side backs down. My real concern is the takeover of the government by Muslim extremists, which would eventually leave the people of Egypt with even less freedom.
I have nothing against moderate Muslim culture, however I am concerned how the radical right might use the resulting power vacuum.

Just my opinion, doesn't really mean anything.

It's finally done

Not quite. Mubarak has resigned ... and given power to the military. That usually spells "more of the same from a different dude", but we'll see.

If the military suddenly decides it likes being in power, this could turn bad. Let's hope for the best.

Al-Jazeera is saying that it was Suleiman, not Mubarak, who announced the latter's resignation. Why do I get the feeling something might be amiss here... Never mind that supposedly some senior military personnel were Mubarak supporters, they're not the only ones I'm keeping my eye on right now.

and there we go, Mubarak crumbled.
The days that follow will be an interesting one... will it slowly shift to the leadership under the west hating secular groups? or would MB offer a moderate's voice. (I think they seem genuine on the 'we hate Al Qaeda' bit despite what western news portrays) or will a certain vacuum of power sees generals taking the power for themselves, much like a military junta force?

Yep, those are the allegations.

Completely unsurprising.  Also, despite 782 pages of evidence, the trial will likely be thrown out.
