As for the rule - I personally think that should be reserved for discussion threads, and in full-blown image threads it should be suspended or done on a personal preferance basis.
Yeah, it's a bit overwhelming having a huge image creep up off the bottom of your screen as you scroll through the thread, but you kind of expect that sort of thing in an image thread.

I posit that we should nullify this rule and make it a guideline for non image-intensive threads - i.e., in a discussion on gameplay mechanics and techniques, a screenshot would be thumbnailed. In an art thread of picture thread such as this, ... well, really? Do we honestly need to be afraid of filling someones screen with an image in an image thread?

And one last thing to consider, too - I'm saying this while browsing from a laptop. I have possibly the tiniest screen here, and I'm okay with image-flood.
Please take it into consideration.

Sure it takes awhile to scroll through each page, but the time it takes to click each thumbnail and view it is even longer. It's quite a hassle really. In addition to that it will also make it difficult to see which images have already been posted yet or not. It's quite easy to pass by a tiny thumbnail.

I think that lenience should be given here considering the nature of the thread.

Not happening, sorry. Just because you see no issue with it doesn't mean it's not an issue for those who run computers at lower resolutions or live in an area with limited bandwidth. This is a forum-wide rule, and no one will be getting any special treatment just because they don't happen to like the rule. And seriously, it only takes about 30 seconds to throw an image onto imageshack and use one of their convenient thumbnail links, and they load quite fast as well, as long as you're not posting some absurdres 5000x5000 image, which no one in their right mind would do anyway. :V
