So I've watched Avengers: Infinity War last Sunday, and...

Whoa...

This is one epic movie here. The Russos also surprised us with

Furthermore, when Marvel said that Spider-Man, Black Panther, and the Guardians of the Galaxy have sequel movies planned for them, leading to the expectation that they are going to survive fighting Thanos,

My immediate thought after seeing the movie:

"An unusual strategy at play here by the writers/director/etc! Let's see how it works out."

I haven't looked, but I imagine some areas of the internet are BURNING right now, or at least were for a short while directly after it.

As someone who reads a ton of comic books and sells comic books professionally I feel kind of bad that my immediate reaction was

"Well, that was a waste of time. They went so big with the ending that it left no question that it's going to get reversed in the next one." Which is a kind of fucked up way of looking at it, I know. If we get a great story out of it then who cares, and Marvel Studios is smart enough that I assume this won't be a completely traditional fake-out that's never mentioned again after it's over.

Even so, it feels kinda comic-book-in-a-bad-way to me. Left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth whether that's fair or not. Between this and the Skrulls being allegedly introduced in Captain Marvel I can't help but picture an MCU that works like the comics, where absolutely nothing has consequences and every major change is immediately reversed when the director of the next movie decides they want to do something different and unrelated.

But not only is it silly to try to second guess Marvel Studios when they've mostly made correct choices and by all accounts just keep getting better over time, but it's especially silly to do that based on assumptions. I'll need to see the next few movies before I know for sure how I feel about this one, but I have high hopes for them.

This is a very book-is-better way of thinking and I support it, because The Shining and Jurassic Park books were actually better than the really good movies. You've also got a real healthy and positive attitude for the future. Some people just have a raw hatred for entire franchise because something didn't turn up right once and that's awful. Anyway,

I'm also wondering just how much of a Dragon Ball Z they'll pull, but hope that at least the physical murders will stick.

Still, I'm just some comic book casul who paid $8.50 for a two and a half hour movie and felt that I got my money's worth. I enjoyed myself even if it was far from perfect.

I would actually say it's a pretty explicit "book is worse" way of thinking in this case. I like the MCU more than the comic book Marvel universe because things feel a lot more like they matter. I don't want to see the MCU go down some of the unfortunate paths that comics inevitably have over time.

There are certain choices that comics feel like they have to inevitably make because of the sheer logistical nightmare of managing decades' worth of stories (reboots and ham-fisted retcons), but I want to see the MCU make the hard choices and not do those things. And they very well may still do that, so fingers crossed. I have high hopes.
