Anything I should keep in mind for starting?
Here's a guide on which ships to keep as you progress:
http://pastebin.com/4Wk2hy0BIt's based purely on stats and necessity so you don't need to follow it strictly. Feel free to keep kanmusus you like. It hasn't been updated to account for Abukuma's Kai Ni who is very useful. Fave ships by heart-locking them so you don't accidentally feed or scrap the ones you want to keep.
At this point assuming you've just started you're in for a doozy since an event is starting in eight days. You will want to try and clear the event maps even if you barely have any ships because the event maps always have great drop pools. Right now the biggest priority is unlocking another expedition fleet. Use the default 30 30 30 30 construction recipe to clear your daily construction quest until you get Sendai, Jintsuu, and Naka.
Read up on the first two sections of this:
http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/GlossaryAnd this for combat:
http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/CombatConstruction recipes:
http://kancolle.wikia.com/wiki/ConstructionThe most important parts of combat are formation selection and ship health modifier.
Minor damage (小破 Shouha) or less (yellow)
Moderate damage (中破 Chuuha) (orange)
Heavy damage (大破 Taiha) (red)
Kanmusus can only sink if you advance a node while a ship is already in Taiha. Don't advance if a ship is red! When clearing a map, do not go into night battle except in the boss node as going into night battle burns ammo. If a ship is in Taiha in daytime it won't sink if you go into night battle, only if you advance to a new node. (this might seem really silly but I'm pointing this out because I didn't know for a while when I started playing )
This part is optional but its very convenient:
