I just patched the game from scratch and it worked fine. Are you sure you're replacing the files correctly? You should be overwriting everything in the "data_b" folder and the executable and "scene.dat" in the main game folder. The original game should be version 1.01 (only the translated files are distributed - there's a lot more to the game than just what's in the patch, obviously, which means that if your files are from a different version problems may come up even though you're replacing the exe).

I seem to be getting the same two errors as you when launching the exe in the patch folder (ie, before patching the actual game). Are you sure this isn't what you're doing? The files I've distributed are insufficient to run the game on their own.

The scene file contains the path of the files making up the game. Only one filename was changed in order to avoid having to use applocal (there's some weird 'x' in one of the filenames that's in Shift-JIS). Not using the scene file I've provided in the patch only means that you'll need to use applocal to start up the game or it'll give a non-fatal error message when stages start telling you it can't find one of the images before proceeding anyway. The translation would still be in place as it has nothing to do with that file and you've replaced the images that contained the original japanese text - the game has nowhere to load it from anymore.

If you can run the game without replacing scene.dat, the translation should work fine except for that one image (unless you run the game with applocal, then all should be fine). If nothing's showing up, you haven't replaced the right files or something else along those lines went wrong. Your data_b folder should be 141,177,141 bytes before and 122,443,406 bytes after copying (...give or take, but that should be mostly right).

If your data_b folder is the proper size and the game's files are still showing up in japanese, you are possibly being voodoo'ed by someone as files that have been overwritten and are no longer there are generally... no longer there in non-voodoo-curse situations. Find a goat, a toga, pine needles, some chalk, a few candles (black ideally - red works too), and a drop of virgin's blood (female only, must be over 66 years old). Get one of those fireplace pokers too - you'll need it in case the demonic circle accidently gets scuffed and stuff gets released into this reality. Also, the goat has to be sacrificed with a silver knife but I find that stainless steel butterknives work just as fine. I wish you the best of luck.

Um... no. No, it is not.

I don't have KK1, but neither 2 nor 3 are that big. Kinda doubtful 1 is. Can you open a command window in that folder, do a "dir > output.txt", and post what's in output.txt? I'm curious what's in your folder that could be so big. The original folder should contain 293 files, and 294 once patched.

I'm trying to do just that, but I can't for the life of me figure out hot to get it to make the damn output.txt file.

And for context, this is off a fresh install too. It's got 229 files apparently. maybe I'm missing an update patch or something?

EDIT: Ah, just wasn't seein' the damn thing. Guess file 229 was the output thing.

That's... weird. The filelist's kinda different. In fact, Yukari isn't even in the game yet your game has a file called "yukari_shot01.bmp". There are also 12 "boss" files whereas yours only has 9 (and several shot files).

I'm under the impression that game's not Katsugeki Kidan 2... There are just too many differences in the files for them to possibly be the same. Does the title screen look like this?

Also, the dialog's a major pain, graphic-wise. PLENTY of backgrounds to recreate: the game stores the ENTIRE SCREEN as an image for every "step" of dialog as opposed to a textbox only. No wonder the files take up so much space...

Great job with the translation, guys. I can't thank you enough! I've already played the games to death while it was in Japanese, but this will certainly make the experience much better. Always wondered how this game portrayed Momiji.

I do have a question about the stats though. I'm aware --STR ups ATK & HP--   --STA ups HP & DEF--   --SPR ups SP & MDEF--   But what exactly does SKL upgrade? Aside from the small SP boost. My guess was that it decreases the cost of skills or makes them more powerful, but does anyone know for sure? Also, Luck. I'm just assuming on this one as well. I think it increases the amount of money & exp gained. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks~

I'm not 100% certain of this but I believe the instructions say it also affects your SP recovery rate. I've played a Momiji with maxed out SPR and SKL (good lord what a chore...) but saw little improvement despite that. It does seem to tie into skill damage somewhat though.

Also, Luck. I'm just assuming on this one as well. I think it increases the amount of money & exp gained. Does anyone know for sure? Thanks~

It increases your critical hit rate but the increase isn't very big. It makes a pretty noticeable difference when maxed out but you need to put at least 10-15 points into it to see much of an improvement, unlike the other stats. Maxing out STR and LUK will make your physical attacks very powerful, though you'll have very few points left to spend on anything else. Being able to do critical hits will really speed up the "extra" extra boss battle though - your only other option is to mass-harvest ores and boost your ATK through the roof, or fight a very long fight.


Nearly done with KK1; gotta say, it's been a busy weekend. There's only a handful of dialogs left to fix up and one or two small misalignement problems I've noticed on my last test run. Should be done in a day or two.

Ah, I've been ignoring my Luck stat because of my assumption, but it seems to be a bit better than I thought. The Skill stat is relevant to my interests. I use skills very frequently, so that's something I'll have to upgrade more. Maybe then Expellee's Canaan will be better than Rabies Bite. I seem to deal more damage to enemies through RB than EC, unless I'm fighting a very large enemy.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I look forward to KK1's translation!

I do have a question about the stats though.

I'll quote the Katsugeki Kidan 3 manual.

ATTACK
 Mainly increases your attack power. Also raises your HP a bit.

DEFENSE
 Increases your HP. Also, each point of defense increases your physical resistance by a fixed amount.
 This stat also affects the amount of health you gain from all items that restore health.

SPIRIT
  Increases your SP. Also, each point of defense increases your danmaku resistance by a fixed amount.
 This stat also affects the amount of spirit you gain from all items that restore spirit as well as increasing your natural SP regeneration rate.

SKILL
 Mostly increases the damage you do with skills and spells, but also increases your SP a bit.
 Investing in this stat will also extend the chain limit window, allowing you to score longer combos.

LUCK
 Increases your chance to land a critical strike (which deals 2x damage).
 This stat also affects the value of Ex pickups and coins you get from lanterns and rocks, as well as the amount of money from money bags.

All three links can be found in my first post on this thread as well. So there we go. All three KK games are now in english. What wouldn't we do for Momiji? Again, many thanks to Arknarok for his excellent high-speed translation effort - the translation patches would've been impossible without you man!

KK1 has been the worst by far. Several things need to be pointed out...

1- It's huge. Like, seriously. This one's about 80 megs, which is nearly triple that of the other two games combined. This is mostly because the game uses a lot of bitmaps instead of PNGs (what should be a 2-3MB image ends up being a 30+MB image!) and because the dialog is stored as the entire screen for each "step" of dialog, not just the text.

2- While the original game had see-through windows, the translation's are solid. This is because there existed too little image data in the game to recreate the regions underneath the text. It's a shame but there wasn't much I could do about it... On the plus side,

you won't have to stare at Mannosuke's crotch through the dialog during the second extra stage. ...Actually now that I think of it, it looks even worse because your mind fills in the blanks. Gyahh!! @_@

3- The title screen looks a bit weird. This is because the way the image is stored and the way the game uses it are very different. It's not aligned all that well but at least the title's clear enough. My apologies for this one as well.

The rest should be fine.

Wow, you guys certainly work quick. Still currently trying to kick Hisoutensoku's butt in KK3, but afterwards I'll play 1 and see if I can find anything worth pointing out. That is of course if there's anything left to point out... or anything at all. I know I've said this a lot, but thanks again, guys.

One tiny issue though... "Unexpected end archive". When I open the Winrar (the KK1e) I get that message. When I extract, or attempt to, I get a message saying "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Any way to solve the issue? One tiny issue though... "Unexpected end archive". When I open the Winrar (the KK1e) I get that message. When I extract, or attempt to, I get a message saying "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Any way to solve the issue?

Sorry about that, the upload probably hit a snag at some point - I'll reupload it. Give it another try in a few minutes (~10-20).

Edit: It's up. I've also been able to re-download it and open the zip, so it should be fine now.

Wow, you guys are just amazing. Three patches in nearly a month. I know this isn't really dialogue heavy, but it still must have been pretty hard to get everything translated, especially the way the game are coded. I've retested the download and it works fine on my end; have you tried redownloading it? The download may've failed for some unexpected reason the first time around.
