Gensou Shoujo Taisen (Fantasy Maiden Wars) thread!
« on: October 19, 2011, 06:16:18 PM »
Now that the english patch is out, a thread is warranted. Post here your doubts, your "halp cannot clear"s, your "I didn't see that reference coming"s, your everything!

For the uneducated: This game is a creation of Sanbondo, who taking the Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden engine as inspiration, created a short (15 stages per route, 20 unique ones overall), but really nice game based on the system, with it's own difficulties. If you rush within the game, YOU WILL CRY. Thread go!

The english patch is currently available here for those who may have overlooked it or can't find it.

Also, for those who are interested in the game but not playing it or wish to see the game in action, etc, I'll be doing a quick livestream of the game later today at around 6 pm Est (3 hours 30 minutes from this post for reference). The first hour or so will basically be me dicking around with other games to allow people to find or rememeber the stream is going on and let people generally flood in. Maybe only 30 minutes if people flood in and make a lynchmob for me to get going, and I'll prolly run it to maybe 9 to 9:30, so don't worry too much about being punctual/late.

Since it will be streaming the game, spoilers will probably be there. I'll likely do normal or something because Zengar wants to be there when I do hard or EX and I don't think I'll unlock EX particularly fast.

edit: also it'll be a blind run, haven't touched the game in the least.

The livestream will be Here. It'll be voiced so you all can laugh at how awful my voice is too! As well as live.

For those playing this, there are some spots in the game that have some dialogue, just minor stuff, nothing relevant. There are also
some hidden items at Patchouli's stage.

I can play this in Japanese, knowing Chinese means the seishins are easy bucket to read and see what they do.

I only played this a little in hard mode, but is it normal for me to die a lot on Mission 1 Marisa?  At least you keep your levels, so you can just pretty much grind.  (there is not even any SP penalties as far as I know)

Yeah, that's a normal feature in SRW games, but I think you don't get the WPs from a stage in this game if you have game overed. Every stage should still be clearable in one go without grinding anything (E: not sure about Lunatic since I haven't tried that yet).

Also more people should play this game because it's so damn awesome. I love the guys who did the music.

The OST also comes with some extra tracks, including the version of Flowering Night that was featured in the preview of the next game!

I love Youmu's themes in this game, so much better than her theme in PCB or the fighting games. Yuuka's music is pretty awesome
scary and it instills a sense of fear.

What'd you expect when she's(Yuuka) the Bian Zoldark/Shu Shirakawa of the game?
I mean heck, on the one stage where you can fight her, she doesn't do much of anything, other than just tank attacks like a boss.
Heck, I moved well into her attack range and started hammering away, but she never countered. Nor did she attack on the enemy turns.
I had more to worry about from Sakuya, Kurumi, and Elly than I did her.
And she's all the more imposing for it, because she didn't even do anything. She basically regarded me as a non-issue, like the buzzing of flies.
And going by how well she was tanking(or DblImg evading), my attacks may as well have been that, for all the good they did.

I heard that if you Master Spark her, she will show you her own, not sure if this is true or not.

Lucky. I attacked her with Meditation Slash, did barely a quarter of her HP, then she countered with her most basic attack and OHKO'd Youmu.

I've not tested this either, but from what I've heard, yes she'll start sparking back with
Spoiler:
8-range Master Spark that hits stupidly hard.

Just got to 'final stage' on Reimu Route...

DAAAAAAAAAYUM. I did NOT rush through the game at all and I still feel pretty underleveled for this. :V I hope it goes better on Marisa route... I take it you can stack all the upgrades together with replaying so you can upgrade everybody to 100%?

Sorry to say it but there's no New Game Plus. However, your clear data will be able to transfer over to the second game, still in development.

If you do lose, you just restart the fight with all your exp that you gained from the previous run, so make sure you Save-Suspend if you do, and dont overwite it with anything that didnt come from trying and retrying it,

Damn. Just realized it the hard way after SOMEHOW winning the last fight... it was hard, even on Normal.  :ohdear:

I'm not sure I understand the way you're saying to lvl the characters...
-Save/Suspend
-lose battle
-restart, keep all XP, lose all WP?

Is that... what it is?  ???

I am not sure how that works, but I am guessing if you lose, they give you an option to restart? With that option, maybe you get to
keep all XP you earned, but you won't get any WP for that stage.

If you lose you get kicked back to the intermission menu, but you retain all your XP and points. If it works like SRW, the WP bonus is lost forever (You can't get it when retrying the stage).

You lose the WP you would've gained that stage.

Thanks for the info-- just confirmed it myself after farming the first stage on Lunatic for a good 2 hours or so... only got about 60k points before I decided to call it quits and move on...
... but I didn't realize you could actually go to the intermission menu right away. Perhaps I didn't get it because I was on Stage 1 and there was no menu to work with at that point, but... if it works, does that mean I can also invest my Graze points right away? I should've gotten about 200+ out of my adventures but I only ended the stage with like 90...  :ohdear:

RETRYING IS FOR SISSIES

FULL CHARGE

ALL DAY

ERRY DAY

So far up to stage 5, haven't had to retry yet, gotten all the WP bonuses (yay Akyu).  Even managed to kill Sakuya with a well placed Headbutt support.  I can also confirm that Sakuya will leave even if you use a bomb to bring her below her threshold rather than attacks.

...I am going to get my ass handed to me so hard later on, aren't I?

Nah. I beat the game without retrying. Just load the whole thing if you feel like you made the wrong move or something.
The game is pretty tough later on though.

This, but not quite the intermission, it goes to unit select.

Now I remembered what I wanted to ask.

Who's worth leveling?  Are people going to keep popping in and out of my party?  I assume I'll have Reimu and Keine, and probably Marisa and Nitori, for pretty much the entire game.  But do I want to sink valuable points into, say, Rumia, or Youmu?

For WP, Daiyousei is worth putting a lvl into, because it makes her Heal ability be free for use. If you lvl her she can gain more SP for more healing as well, just like Keine. Marisa and Reimu's WP let you do stupid amounts of damage if you crit. Keine's boosts adjacent units' XP. Haven't checked the others, myself, but so far, the ones I got have been pretty useful.

What Trickster-kun said, Daiyousei is definitely worth putting one level in to get the free heals. She will automatically level very fast once
she heals. If you go Reimu's route, I guess leveling Keine and Reimu is good, since you'll be using them the whole game. Of course, if you
take Marisa's route, level up Nitori and Marisa.
As for which characters I think are good. Keine is really good, her defense is amazing, so buffing her and giving her defense support is
exceptionally useful. Youmu is probably one of the best characters in the game, having solid defense, really high evasion, hit rate, and damage.
I like the 140 graze point buffs, the ones that give +10 to 2 stats when your power reaches 130+, those are useful.
Keine's wife ability, I find to be only so so. The xp bonus isn't that important, because xp scales in this game. Level difference between
you and the target gives you more or less xp. So, a level 10 Daiyousei uses her heal ability on a level 16 Reimu, she will probably get enough
xp to level up once. This is also why Daiyousei is one of the highest level characters in my party, but even so she will still get one shotted
if a boss hits her.
Remember, if you fly, you use up 1 MP per step. If you walk, you do not use up MP per step, and you auto-regenerate a bit of MP per turn.

Questions if anybody can answer.

Rumia stinks, I am intentionally avoiding her from landing a killing blow so she doesn't eat precious exp from more useful characters. Is this a mistake? I mean does she get a useful ex-rumia mode later on or something?

Also how do I support attack? I plant keine next to an enemy and wait, then attack with someone else, no support. Ok fine. Sometimes keine didn't even move yet, and I attack with another ally, keen still won't support. Why do!? Also I always hear about support headbutts, can she support with other attacks? Is there a way to tell what attacks support if I spend graze on support attack?

Also, anybody know the URL for the Japanese wiki? I can't find it at touhou wiki net.

She gets no stronger than she already is. (Though some mid-nearendgame stages are Ngt terrain where she performs slightly better)

From the manual:

Requirements to Perform a Support Attack
● An ally must be present.
● The skill ?Support Attack? must have been learnt.
● The unit to receive the support must be beside the supporting unit, and in the same
terrain. For example, if one unit is in Air terrain, the other must be as well.
● The unit must have at least one use of Support Attack remaining.
● The unit must not have acted already.
● The target that is being attacked must be within attack range.

@Ghaleon:
Rumia is pretty good at taking hits, but that is about it. She is especially good at taking laser attacks, so she is great in some stages.
XP gained in this game is scaled by what level you are vs your opponent, so you may still want to level her up, if less so than other
characters.

For support attacks, you need to make sure you are on the same level as them. If you are in the Air, the supporting attacker must also
be in the Air. When support attacking, you can also choose what type of support attacks you want to do, if there is more than one choice.
Also note that support attacks are limited by how many uses per turn. Level 1 attack support only allows you to use the attack support
once per turn.
Support attacks also do not trigger when you are counter attacking.
