Touhou Tournament idea?
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:18:16 PM »
Hi guys, I've just joined the forum and wanted to discuss an idea I have with official Touhou Games.

I've first started playing Touhou since September on my game stream upon request, and I liked the challenging aspect of the game (I never played danmaku games in my life) and the characters were super cool and awesome!. So Touhou really became one of my games on my Twitch Stream and I have so much fun playing the game every time :D Love it! Link to my Twitch Channel

I am not a great player myself (So far my furthest chronological clear is Touhou 10 Extra), but I would love to somehow "create" a tournament to host/stream. Because I believe that there are Monsters out there and I would love to see them play!.
Now first, I am aware that there are competitive Touhou 9 which I've seen somewhere around the internet..., but I want it to branch off even further.

--Touhou Tournament?
I would really love to do a "Live Run Tournament(?)" where you are in an 1 : 1 best of 3 situation, players take turns and suggest a game/difficulty (Loser of the round chooses next). (For Example, Player 1 says "Touhou 10 Lunatic"). Each player sets up and starts at the same time live [no replay]. Whoever 1cc, or if both player clears, higher points = winner of the round. [So players can actually request Easy or Normal if they know a specific pattern to gain maximum points, I believe this makes the overall play more interesting]
I still don't know much about the game, but I believe that "Point of collection" will make the only difference if both players capture Every spell card + No Deaths/Bombs? (Oh man, I would love to see the games THAT close)

Biggest problem is... Since there is no spectator mode for regular Touhou games.., this would be hard... Maybe Players can screen cap/stream using programs and I capture them + overlay, that works as well but this makes it very tedious to players, and only few matches can be streamed... (Maybe just the Semi/Grand finals being streamed and below are picked from Score Rankings? Not sure).
Or perhaps in an IRC we can set up and both players provide the Replay and I play them side by side? Don't know how you would prevent cheating for this one.. and this defeats the point of being Live..

Very Drafty and full of ideas right now.. I feel that the community is big enough to really look into this! I wish to know more Touhou players to share the ideas with me. Of course I would love to have Japanese/Korean players to join as well. (Too bad I don't know those communities :(... but if there is a tournament, we can post at Korean or Japanese forums to participate?!)
If this really works out with the help of the community, I am willing initially donate the prize money as well from my past Streaming revenue ($50? ~ $200?  or Prizes? I don't know).

Please let me know your thoughts!, If it's really a dumb idea.. oh well! I love playing da Touhou games and will not drop it anytime soon :D

Thanks for the read!

P.S I don't know if I am allowed to post a thread like this here, let me know if I am breaking any rules.. (I did read them but there seem to be no problem.. Sorry in advance if I did something wrong!)

Your topic reminds me those streams about games like DOTA or Starcraft, maybe you could try to gather some Touhou friends and simulate a tournament between you and them simulating a real stream, maybe with a narrator and in-time replays of the best "tricks".  At the moment I am with some internet problems so I couldn't help you with this idea.

Anyway one problem that I see in these tournaments is how you would synchronise the gameplay of the challengers? If you don't need to keep they synchronized and just want to see their replay files them there are a lot of "challenges" in this forum that follow this format.

Each game has a unique scoring system that actually makes a pretty big difference in final scores-for example, optimizing borders for Cherry gain in PCB raises spellcard values higher, farming time and graze points for PIV and spellcard bonuses in IN, maxing faith early in MoF, grazing a ton in SA...and so on.  Base spellcard bonuses actually make up a small portion of the final scores-and in Ten Desires, it's optimal to ignore a majority of the bonuses and Trance through everything for...more PIV gain and score.

Aside from that, I do like the idea and would gladly participate if my laptop could stream the games without it lagging.  Perhaps also clearing a certain number of scenes in X time for the photo games could work as a category?

edit: rather than higher score being the tiebreaker, it could be for some rounds but others could be lives/bombs left, others could be least bombs used, others least/most graze...the tiebreaking factor could be pretty much anything.

Yeah, if there is a best way to do this.. starting this idea would be golden!.. The only "Possible Idea" would be both players streaming at the same time.., then again, that would cause problems if one player lags or disconnects.

Replays are also another option, where as both players give me the replay. (After the round starts, having the time limit of approx 35~40 Minutes may prevent players "restarting". Also, While the match is being shown, players can start the next match right away. (Since most Touhou games are same length)

Oh yeah, I didn't quite understand those mechanics when I played it (Since my goal was just to beat em ;) ). That really makes it even more in-depth in strat. Because if player 1 knows the optimal path for Grazing SA while Player 2 don't, Player 1 would choose SA as one of the games.

I think the idea may be a little early to be starting something, I am planning to go around in the Touhou Korean forums to see if they're doing something similar. Although most Touhou communities are not "playing" communities as I remember :p.. I hope to see this branch off in the future!

We should just do our version of the tournament japanese players host every year. Two players of about the same caliber play for 2.5 hours of x game on x mode and the one with a higher score wins. Also survival 1 credit LNB matches with lower misses wins. I think they also have two teams and whichever team has more winners in matches they win the tournament.

I like Cactu's idea. But I think we should also give the survival a time limit rather than 1 credit, so they can try as many times as they want to get the most polished clear they can in that limit, as really stupid mistakes can happen.

I wonder how the scoring would go. We only really have specialist score runners in some of the games, as it's not as diverse as Japan, so it'll probably all just be one winner for each game. Also keeping in mind that most people may not be familiar or versed with most of the scoring systems.

Then again, that would give people an excuse to learn them. Experimentation is always fun...

Not that winning should be the main reason to participate... In the end it should all just be about the fun. :)

I like the idea, and I would love to post around Korean, Japan forums to really test things out.

This is what I'm thinking so far :
Prelim :
Announcement in like a week before that two games will be chosen at random
Random game is chosen from 6,7,8,10,11,12,13,14

No participant limit, Scoreboard top 2 AVG gets chosen, users have 1 or 2 days to get the best score possible
Example , Prelim game : 7Lunatic and 13Lunatic
Scoreboard :
Rank 1 : John Doe 7 : 10000 13 : 20000 Avg : 15000
Rank 2 : etc etc

Finals
Top 2 players are chosen and met at a different day
Best of 3
Round 1 Game 1(7 Lunatic)
Round 2 Game 2(13 Lunatic)
Round 3 Random from Game 1 and Game 2

Kind of brings back the idea of using replays to stream the matches. Two finalist players need to provide replays within 50 minutes.
When Round 1 is being shown to public, players work on Round 2. and so forth

There are some problems from me not knowing how the replay works
Is there any way to cheat out of this? (alternating scores within replay file?, date/time using old prefect replays?, using a cheated client?)
Additionally.. I mean, how do replay files actually work?
Also, for Tech/Streaming wise. How do you run two clients at once? I couldn't figure it out :p

Those are the only big problems I see here. Had a lot of fun thinking about this, one day it will be run!? Anyone know the Japanese community well to share this idea?

Also, I am really getting into Soku and Masquerade as well (I like fighting games, didn't know these exist!). I assume there are tournaments for those as well? :D

The replay file is just an RNG seed and a series of inputs for the game to play back, to the best of my knowledge.  The date/time can be changed within the replay file in any plaintext editor, however, and this means a cheated run (played with slowdown via an undetected method by the game or savestating) could be submitted as a run that was just played.  The score displayed can be edited, by the final score shown in the run would still be accurate.

Only wish is to be done live though!
