Title: Diplomacy the Vanilla Kind (Call America, Germany wins!)
Post by: Schezo on May 13, 2011, 08:26:29 PM
Alright so since we have recently finished our last game, I'm here to host another game of Diplomacy so others can get in on it.

This will be a standard 7 player game.  Spain and Norway will be neutral.

Sign ups
England: PX
France: Kasunagi
Germany:  Shadoweh and Kitten4U hydra
Italy: Azaa (Colossusketch)
Russia:  Yonowaaru
Austria: Dorian G.
Turkey:  ActionDan

Stuff to remember:
You all are free to use whatever means of communication you want to at any time of the game.  Only PM your orders to me though.

You have:
72 hours to send in orders for moving turns.
24 hours to send in orders for building turns.
24 hours to send in orders for retreat phases

If you go 2 turns without sending in an order, your country will fall to civil unrest and everything you own will turn neutral.

You will all make me love you forever and my life easier if you could include Diplomacy as the title in your orders PM.

Please make sure you have all of the PMs you sent set to save, so we can compile them at the end of the game!

Regarding the hydra:
Kitten4U will be Hydraing with Shadoweh as Germany also so they are one political party so Kitten can learn to play this game.  Feel free to PM either or both of them to make your Diplomatic solutions since they will act as one entity.  However, only Shadoweh will be responding to you guys PM wise.  The only way you can talk to both of them is if you're in an IRC client with them and they tell you whatever.

You all are free to use whatever means of communication you want to at any time of the game.  Only PM your orders to me though.

You have:

48 hours to send in orders for building turns.

The deadline for the first turn Spring AD 1901 is 19.5 at 6:00PM Central Standard Time (CST)
Good luck everyone and have a nice game.

But don't worry, I can do PMs! :D

I'd vote for 24 hours, but considering how the current MotK mafia game is progressing, others may have different opinions.

BRB stalking you over internets :D.  I am not famous at all like that! But I guess people would reconize me in tournaments perhaps in the North-Eastern Sea Coasts states (I hope anyway).  Who knows? I might have played you once already :)

I wonder if we could play correspondence chess over MotK?

:ohdear:

I think playing over Yahoo or something would be easier tbh.  I tried to play a game with Rou where we only gave each other notation, but I got confused and messed up a couple of moves because I use descriptive notation, not algebraic. :V  My brain's been on the wonky side, so I dunno if I want to play a super long game, but like 5 minute blitz is always p great.

I think I made a yahoo account a long time ago just for that purpose, but I don't remember the username or password.  Maybe I'll go make another one.  If instead of  the algerbraic "e4," do you use the english system? (Like 1. Nc3 would translate to "Queen's Knight 1 to Queen Bishop's 3") I confess I don't remember the english system all that well, but it isn't too hard to get into I think.

Point is, we should totally play a game!

Edit: Also my rating is 1937 USCF, and I'm figuring you are prolly around that range (but if much higher or much lower, rating won't stop me ;))
Title: Re: Diplomacy the Vanilla Kind (New Game)
Post by: Kitten4u on May 17, 2011, 04:24:03 AM
Nc3 = NQB3 if it was white moving yeah.  If it was black it would be NQB6 and that's where the confusion comes in. :V
Title: Re: Diplomacy the Vanilla Kind (New Game)
Post by: ActionDan on May 17, 2011, 04:27:48 AM
ah, Ok I can work with that.  so guessing e4 = KP2@K4 if white or if black KP7@K5? and is castling still O-O (kingside) and O-O-O (queen side)?
Title: Re: Diplomacy the Vanilla Kind (New Game)
Post by: Kitten4u on May 17, 2011, 04:32:11 AM
e4 = P-K4 if it's white's turn.  P-K5 if it's black's.  Castling notation is the same.  Hyphens are optional.  I use them when I feel like it.

Ok :D, I'm sorry, it's quite exciting to find a fellow chess player!  Anyway I guess I'll talk chess in PMs between our countries.

Yes that means it might go something like this:

Turkey: "GD GERMANY YOU STABBED ME IN THE BACK LIKE DORMIO IN DTB MAFIA!!! also don't you love the caro-kann defense!"

Germany: "HAHAHAHAHAH! Yes, it's fairly solid actually."

Hey Schezo, ever thought about adding some flavour into the updates? I've seen some Diplomacy games on other sites and the hosts seem to do some commentating on the moves and such and I think it would be interesting....

It's quiet... too quiet.

That's what I would be thinking if I weren't fat and secure from the spoils of war!

Also I would love some flavor, just to tickle our fancies.

Or I could try anthropomorphizing our countries in a fanfic and create a massive orgy where somebody gets royally screwed.
If it's anything like last time...

Quote from: Last time:
And lo gathered the mob 'round, smashing and pecking on
PX
, whose wails for desperate mercy fell to deaf ears. The skies filled with "OH GOD NOT THE FACE" and "DON'T PUT YOUR FINGER THERE (wait put your finger there)".

I can only imagine which country that will be.

This turn looks like it's going to make everyone on the board happy.  England seems to have gained more footing on the mainland while his homeland is under assault.  Austria and Turkey run around mostly unchecked.  Sadly it seems Italy and Russia are screwed now but they still can be an influential part of the outcome of the game.

Um, I hate to step in the middle but I believe that the convoy can only be affected if it is dislodged, not merely attacked.

Edit: Found it, Page 14 of the rulebook, see "Disrupting a Convoy."

Hmm... this is a screwy situation and you're going to hate me, but I can't go against the program and that's how it worked it out.  I would have assumed that's how it would have worked out anyways since that's how supports work but I guess this is going to be different from tabletop Diplomacy.

I am incredibly sorry for this and if you were counting on the rules to work.

Greetings from the Ottoman Empire to the Old World!

We are excited to inform you that a New Order has taken control of the future of the Ottoman Empire. Under the reign of Sultan "Action" Dan, the empire expanded its borders considerably, but at the expense of the citizens living at home and in the surrounding areas. Human rights abuses under Dan's regime were, sadly, widespread. We have heard the concerns of the people and acted on their desire for freedom. Earlier today, forces led by the enigmatic colonel known only as "The Conqueror" stormed the Presidential Palace, decimating the palace guard and then hanging Sultan Dan on his own gallows in the middle of the town plaza.

Due to the questionable foreign policy of the Dan regime and the fact that the Sultan's forces burned all the files in the National Archive before revolutionary forces could get a hold of them, all relations with foreign states will be given a clean slate, although already standing treaties and non-aggression pacts will be observed if they are brought to notice.

Diplomatic missives will be sent shortly to all involved parties once the post-celebration riots have quieted down.

It's seriously trippy how the A's start looking like they're moving backwards in slow motion.

Do you know the biggest lesson I learned from what you did? I discovered I have a sort of black-box quick-save feature. In the event of a catastrophic failure, the last two minutes of my life are preserved for analysis. I was able?well, forced, really?to relive you killing me. Again and again. Forever. You know, if you had done that to someone else, they might dedicate their life to exacting... revenge.

Well done. Here come the test results: "You are a horrible person." That's what it says: a horrible person. We weren't even testing for that.

It wasn't anything personal. Just... you know. You did kill me. Fair's fair.

Hi everyone,

As you guys can probably tell, I broke up with Austria last season. Irreconcilable differences apparently. Don't ask for details, it's all still very sensitive.

Also as an aside the Austrian ambassador to Turkey was found tarred and feathered floating face down in the Black Sea.

We can't see anything wrong about our decision, he is free to go ?Doom, Doom, Doom? all over the place, as long as he does it in a threequarter time. But seriously, inviting an barbarian who doesn't even acknowledge the most basic conventions, like diplomatic immunity, is absolutely impossible.

We don't understand him, what is he even talking about?

We had reservations against this change of regime from the very beginning and our actions were the result of our viewpoint. He didn't give us the slightest reason to change this viewpoint, the contrary was the case. Can he please explain to us which part of his message, in which he openly called us a liar and aggressor, was supposed to awake our trust? What brings him to the assumption that it would ease our tense relationship when he accuses and insults us?
Everyone gets the allies they deserves, but Jesus Christ what have we done?

Very well, I see you've gone the route of willful ignorance.

Trust, trust, trust. I put my trust in your hands, and you ripped it apart. I know all about the hidden messages, the secret meetings, the "group discussions" that often morphed into something more...sensual.
It's clear you have no emotion, no feeling, no desire to uphold honour in the true sense of the word. A kingdom ruled by autocrats can never be true to the heart. It was wishful thinking on my part that I could even hope to stay the course set by my mentors. There is no love in this world. Only hate. And war.

Dan, is this the open relationship you were talking about?

Is everyone as confused as I am?

Some clarifications:  I am no longer PMing anyone besides conqueror about this game.
I believe Dorian's pronouns are referring to me and my previous play (specifically that abrupt general post after Spring 1904)
Unless the Mod commands me otherwise, I have no reservations about posting in the General Thread about the game (especially about the game before I asked for a replacement)

I maintain Turkey was clearly betrayed first notwithstanding Austria's implications to the opposite.

Game 2: Mistake: Trusting the people I talked to

Results? Everybody is a jerk. :3

Ahh...
The empire I had finally rebuilt is under attack,
and my former allies are responsible for the destruction.
Things aren't going my way lately....
Recent betrayals have set me thinking.
There is no need to fill the world with hate.
Why devolve into anger when we can all have fun together?
I dreamed a dream, of fantasy and romance.
Of a world filled with love, hugs, and kittens.
And so I've made my decision.
I'll spread my message of peace and joy.
I'll make this world my wonderful heaven.

Move orders don't turn into Holds when they fail, silly Dan. :D In fact it's the only situation where a support fails to hold a position.
I'm reading the rules trying to figure out why Austria lost Moscow, on the surface it looks like it should have been 2 vs 2 there.

The army in Moscow was attacking and cut support at Sevastopol. If Austria had attacked from Sevastopol instead of Warsaw we would have stalemated, I think.

And yeah, a failed move order doesn't turn into a hold. It was worth a shot though, because I've never actually tried it out (and there were no better alternatives).

The only way someone can win is when one power can take 18 supply centers. Unless you can get everyone to agree to draw/lose you'll keep fighting.

That's also what the bet's about. I say there's going to be a clear winner.

We are not really surprised, Piefke is so ... just so ? well Piefke. ?Fear me I'm the embodiment of humorlessness? and that all for a little flirt with France? As if we could help it, we have the Vienna blood after all.

So so he call it fate, well we call it importunity. And he wants to ?visit our tracts of land once more?, is that supposed to be a threat? Wasn't it difficult enough to get him out of our land?
Well we will see about that!

As the auguration cerimony began, one of the German guards held up a comfily padded pillow. Upon the pillow sat a small, innocent looking kitten, formerly having taken the seat at head of the table. "Greetings to all my new servants!" The kitten beamed cheerfully. "As you can see, Austria and France have been subdued." The kitten waved her paw at a golden cage holding an angry parrot, with a young frenchman tied to the pole. "For his assistance in rounding up the vagabounds and delivery of turkish delights, Turkey has been upgraded to personal cat groomer." A young man in a butler outfit mumbled something about getting to it later. "It's a shame our great leader Shadoweh was feeling ill and could not attend, but I, Kitten4u will take good care of our great country until she recovers. Now, a toast! To Germany!"

Meanwhile, in the dungeons under Germany's palace, Shadoweh pounded on the door to her cell. "Kitten! Come on! It was a joke okay, you're overreacting, I really just wanted to play chess this time! KITTEN! LET ME OUT!"

Dan, you have to keep in mind that your replacing out skewed a lot of the diplomacy you worked out amongst yourselfs so when another player came in he could go, "whatever, I did not say that the other guy did" so I think Austria was just being wary and it boinked you both.

Might as well ask this now.  Dorian, Why did you betray me?  And at that, Why did you bring up a personal relationship to try and justify it.  That really wasn't cool.
Well Schezo already summarized my reason, you can use as much of your ?oh my god chainsaw in front of not me? mafia terminology as you want. But same player spot doesn't means same alignment here, that's why I changed my plans.

(All the relationship stuff was random RP.)

I am interested in why Austria didn't finish off Germany while she was weak though.
Same answer here, or do you really want to know why I didn't killed the only potential ally in the case that it comes to an conflict with my former ally?

This should also help to bring some light into the darkness, the comments I add to my orders ITT how I entertained the Mod. Enjoy!

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1901
I'm not sure if you want to know about my proceedings so here is just a quick overview:
Yonowaaru (Russia): I offered him a alliance and he accepted it so far, details aren't completely elaborated.
Shadoweh/Kitten4u (Germany): I offered her a ?cessation of hostilities? and spend a lot of time on IRC with her yesterday, conclusion: That girl is dangerous!
ActionDan (Turkey): He is interested in Greece but don't trust me, I think that will change next turn.
Kasunagi (France): Well he told me that he plans to attack Italy but wasn't sure how, we will see about that.
Colossusketch (Italy): I ask about his plans, didn't get an answer. Now he has my full attention if he like it or not.
PX (England): We arranged an ?Information Exchange agreement?.
Well that's it so far.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1901
Well things doesn't turned out as I expected them to do. However I worked out an alliance with ActionDan, we will see how this turns out. I will also continue my ?info fishing? maybe I get something useful for a change.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Winter 1901
Obvious orders are obvious, I spend a lot of time on Shadowehs IRC channel again, by the way you are now officially invited to join us there. We also finalized our  tactic against Russia, PX offered support in the north, well the buffet is opened.^^

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1902
I'm afraid that there isn't much to say about this turn:
ActionDan (Turkey): Our strategy stands now we can begin with the execution.
PX (England): He was quite vague about his plans, but when he said the truth about France (it implicates that England is political isolated), than he can be useful.
Kasunagi (France): He doesn't answered my question, but his builds are unsuspicious, he is probably just busy.
Shadoweh/Kitten4u (Germany): We are talking more about Mafia than Diplomacy, maybe a good thing cause I don't know how long I can hide my ?scumy intentions?.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1902
There wasn't much negotiations this turn, so let me try to summarize the current situation:
Italy is mostly incapable of acting and will be a easy victim for Dan, France tunnels on England and Germany picked the thinnest bottleneck that was available for her expansion. My Ottoman friend proved himself as solid ally and England depend on our goodwill. Briefly worded IT'S PERFECTO! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIJRAcVf5tY)
The only thing that could rain on my parade is a backstab from Dan, but I don't see why he should do that.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1903
Again not much negotiations, I neglect this game too much since Shadoweh coaxed me to join a mafia game with her aka. enslaved me. Do you have an idea how difficult it is helping her there while plotting her downfall here? However one more turn and the masquerade has an end.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1903
Oh dear what is the difference between AM and PM again, I think i forgot it.
Sorry mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1904
What a mess, well I need to change my plans and to get in a better position to defend myself. Why does he have to replace out in an moment like this? Well now is the outcome open again, we will see about it.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1904
Well I'm not sure if it was the right decision to change my ways that drastic, kinda feels like I deny myself an safe victory, but such an victory would be too boring anyway so whatever.
Shadowkitten gives me an headache, first they were plotting with Kasu against PX then with PX against Kasu and now alone against both. However they will be too busy to deal with me, and I offered Kasu advices if he should think that ?Germanys plans aren't in his best interest? so I have still options to keep them busy.
The negotiations with Conqueror wasn't too long nor successful, Dans paranoia annoyed me already enough and now comes Conqueror and bluntly called my ?measure of precaution? an ?act of aggression?. Well that got him an AEIOU which sand for ?Austriae est imperare orbi universo? that's Latin and means ?Oh my god you suck?, OK it actually means ?It is Austria's destiny to rule the whole world? but that doesn't make any difference here, does it?

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1905
Well there isn't much to say about this turn. PX offered me help but I have no idea if he is serious or not and Kasu plans his Italy invasion for next year so it's questionable how helpful he will be. I assume that I will lose Venice and Trieste this turn but I will maybe get Sevastopol for it, well we will see about it.
Conclusion: The situation is desperate but not serious.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1905
It's pretty much all or nothing for me this turn, they say that hope dies last but that only means that everyone else is already dead. PX gives me an headache, I don't think that he has even the slightest idea in what a mess of a situation his big talking in the game thread put me in.
Apropos talking in the game, Shadoweh said that my performance were amazing, or was it amusing? Well she don't know that it was at last half true, I really wanted renegotiations with Conqueror but he wasn't interested in it at all. In retrospect was his reaction way to confident for my liking, good he was in the better position but not that much better, Kasus and Colossusketchs support would be nice but not enough and PX and Yonowaaru were already lost cases at the time, so when he expects real help then it only laves ?
That's such an irony, isn't it? Well we will see about it.
PS: I hope that it wasn't too melancholic for your taste.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1906
That's not good at all, I spend all my pre-downfall melancholy on the last turn. Well I don't expect Shadowkittens to betray me this year anyway, it isn't the right time for it.
Well I've done most of my proceedings this winter, it was really not that easy to convince Kasu of my ideas but I think that it was worth the trouble. Provided that he really goes with the plan what is always questionable in his case. And I spend the last two days talking with K4U about the sharing of Russia. She doesn't seems to be at the topic yesterday but she and Shadoweh agreed to my plans at the end. My plan is simple, I will give up on Bul and Rum to get Mos an Sev in spring then I hold Mos and Sev while trying to get Rum, Bul and/or Tri back in fall. Don't worry if you don't get it, it will make more sense when you see the actual orders, or at last I hope so. Well we will see about it.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1906
This turn is so messed, up you don't even know. The only think I can say for sure is that Conqueror has either insider infos about my conversations with Shadowkittens or the best timing in the history of ever. Yes that means that I didn't talked with him at all, but no one will believe me so what does it matter? I can not even offer a prediction. Well we will see about it.

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Spring 1907
Well there isn't anything to say about this turn, there will be more next time but only if our anti Germany conspiracy works and that depends on Italy, it's such an irony isn't it?

Diplomacy: Orders for Austria Fall 1907
That's now the ?Kronprinz Rudolf? suicide route, well the offer for an anti Germany conspiracy was pretty much an now or never opportunity. Conqueror rejected it now he has to accept the consequence.

Of course I'm a liar, did you ever considered that I expected you to contacted me first? Or that I use the priority you give it to judge your intentions? I mean you had even time for an ?Introduction Speech?, but your so desired ally needed to wait 10 hours more to get a PM? And what a PM it was, generic greetings and questions you send to everyone plus two lines of flavor/RP stuff. Guess what I thought about you at this moment. Good I was already in a bad mood and I maybe overreacted a bit, but that doesn't changes the fact that you were way to quick with your declaration of war.

Post by: ActionDan on July 26, 2011, 12:38:11 PM
That really doesn't explain why you turned on me... while I was still in the game.  I hadn't replaced out yet when you moved your forces away from Germany's borders and closer to mine.

And even before that you didn't cut support in Munich, allowing a Russian army to retake one of Germany's home supply centers.  I was quite faithful the entire time.  I could understand if perhaps you had a diplomatic reason for your betrayal, but you left me with this.

Quote
To put you in the picture, a friend of mine ask me for the favor to spare Germany till England is done. I'm not pleased with PX utterances in the game thread at all, so I'm more than willing to grant him this favor. That leaves the question how am I supposed to do this without risking our victory. Do you have any suggestions?

Dorian von Habsburg

As for your RP with Conqueror.
Quote
PS: Do you put Conqueror in to the picture or shell I do it? Or isn't he interested to continue our cooperation?
Quote
About Conq:  Feel free to PM him about wishing to continue the alliance, but I'll inform him of it anyway and ask that he win with you.  Whatever happens afterwards will be up to him however.

.... So do you really believe that Conq was totally new and couldn't decide what was best for himself?

That really doesn't explain why you turned on me... while I was still in the game.  I hadn't replaced out yet when you moved your forces away from Germany's borders and closer to mine.

And even before that you didn't cut support in Munich, allowing a Russian army to retake one of Germany's home supply centers.  I was quite faithful the entire time.  I could understand if perhaps you had a diplomatic reason for your betrayal, but you left me with this.

As for your RP with Conqueror.
.... So do you really believe that Conq was totally new and couldn't decide what was best for himself?
Are you kidding me, I should have moved all my forces into Germany? Leaving my homeland unguarded and neutralizing the only one who could help me when your replace decides to go for a solo victory, no thanks.
Also, did you ever heard of the word discretion? I thought PX was bad but serious it seems that I told you already to much.
