And yes, the proper response to the outcry about the color scheme is either "tweak the shading to reduce any notes of eye-bleeding" (the background yellow is rather bright now that I look at it more closely, while it's darker on Muffin's site and not used in large blocks) or "yeah yeah it's temporary just let the joke ride out."

Really, it's not much different from the complaints about the first custom skin for CPMC...

I have a high contrast display and why is it that my eyes aren't "burning" or "blinding" me? Maybe it's because I used to look directly at the sun back in elementary school.
Which leads me to believe: People will complain whenever given a chance to do so. So, explain to me what is so "bright" or "blinding" about this forum layout. Do that, and maybe we can go back to our Christmas theme.

Although yes, I must admit, on the rest of the board's gray theme, red and blue text look absolutely hideous, so yes, I know what "blinding colors" are. I can't stare for five freaking seconds without getting a headache.

Either way, we're most likely going back. It would be ridiculous to get to the holidays and still have ketchup over mustard as a layout.
Common sense says to be patient. The theme isn't permanent, you guys. :V

1. The new color scheme appeared.
2. Some people got mad at the new color-scheme.
3. The response from the people who were having fun was universally to brush off this anger and make jokes at the people who were angry.
4. The people who were mad got more mad.

Now, I'm not going to say the knee-jerk RAEG over the new color scheme was justified (particularly my own; overreactions have always been a problem for me). I'm also not going to say that anyone should have seen this coming before the fact, since 20-20 hindsight is 20-20, and if you worried about unadulterated fury in response to every little thing, you'd never get anything done.

But 4 happening as a result of 3 seems kind of obvious to me (though this is still hindsight). Continuing to brush them off as "communist pig-dogs", or that deal-with-it image ... well, I know that it was in jest, and nobody was actually serious about it. The thing is, the angry people were serious, and it therefore gave them the impression that they were being trivialized, that the other people (including the people who ran the forum!) didn't actually care how they felt. Worse were the people who outright insulted them, calling them and their anger "stupid." And, like all people on the internet, the angry people responded by taking it personally. The fun, to them, was being had at their expense. Was this true? Was their increased anger "justified"? Of course not, but it was still there. And so we started to have a feedback loop.

The point I'm trying to make here is: once you have this anger out there, you need to actually take it seriously and deal with it. Joking about peoples' anger to their faces makes it worse. The number-one priority should have been defusing the anger, because it automatically leads to more anger regardless of whose "fault" it is or how justified you think their anger is.

Lenin, I think, understood this. Stalin did, too, after his own fashion. It remains to be seen whether the same can be said of others who would follow in their footsteps.

Furthermore, this is a joke forum that is the home to jokes and other non-serious things. The fact that the theme was changed lends further credence to the joke nature of this board. The reaction of the staff, a hand-wave and "calm down", is more than sufficient. The fact that some posters have such outrageous reactions to the change is not the fault of the staff but rather the poster themselves. There exist several workarounds mentioned as alternatives in various threads, and likely more exist throughout the internet.

Besides, demanding treatment more equal than those of the proletariat is not the Communist way :V

People didn't really like drastic change that happened suddenly. I wasn't really angry. Actually, pretty amused. Its the freakin internet. Nothing is ever serious.

Calling attention to the complaints with a thread vaguely insulting those complaining about it and with an empty stock response of "deal with it" is not a hand-wave and "calm down." Nor is there a follow-up segment in that post with a more serious response to the complaints or a hint of that hand-wave and 'calm down.'

Muffin does have a point about fueling irrational anger being a bad idea. Even if it's just recognizing the complaint and saying "Sorry, no dice," showing some understanding of it even if you disagree is a good idea.

It teaches that it's OK to blow up over something that petty. People who go over the top in their reactions to things, generally speaking, are not the people the site needs to bend over backwards for. Just like anywhere else in life. Other folks who don't enjoy the colors very much - among them Esifex, dustyjo and theshim - have managed to show a sense of humor. The community here as a whole is capable of having a relaxed atmosphere without having to shift into Committee Mode over every little thing.

In short, yes, sometimes you do need to tell people to lighten up. Sometimes validating their temper tantrums by "taking it seriously" is a terrible idea.

In McCarthy's day being called a Capitalist pigdog would hardly be considered an insult, and now it's taboo to mention?

Muffin's point about fueling irrational anger is flawed since it is dealing with anger that is, in fact, irrational. With anger that has no rationale to it, then is no one true effective method to deal with it. Once again, the user that has become irrationally angry at a theme change is at fault; the fact that they would get even angrier at being told to calm down only lends further credence to that theory.

Anyway, forgive me if I'm restarting something, but I have to say that I think both sides are at fault here. Some people overreacted about what was supposed to be a passing joke, yes, but I think that making a topic like this would only exacerbate the situation. Yes I know it's only 1 or 2 people doing the actual complaining, but that's all it takes to suck the fun out of what amounts to a very shitty job I have here.
