And it's not generically mediocre; they all have unique properties and characteristics, but they're all joined by their mutual hatred of you and progress.

Yeah. ReimuA's pretty much a good choice for SA. This coming from the guy who usually prefers the homing type, but. Uh. Suika's homing isn't so hot, so... yeah. And there's no way in hell I'm touching the mess that's Aya's horrible thing.

Reimu C really wants to be solo Youmu from IN. But, it just lacks the charm. And the floatiness to get give it the spread.

Marisa C's bomb is....weird. I still don't know if I like it or not. it keeps you alive, but that's about it. But really, it's all you need. My mood on it varies.

I suppose Nitori's bomb is useful for beginners, but when you develop a good death bomb reflex it becomes completely useless. It has Marisa's large hitbox (which is worse in this game than in any other), has less range and damage than Reimu A, the bomb has absolutely no offensive capabilities, and you have to deal with that annoying popping sound the missiles make whenever they hit something.
I like ReimuB, as I mentioned in the Accomplishments thread. Give her a spin~

Dear god Reimu B...to capture every remaining spell card I guess I'm going to HAVE to learn the shot types to an extent, but Reimu B is horrible...she's the homing shot type, deals damage like a homing shot type, but kinda forgot the homing aspect of a homing type. Those mist clouds Suika fires just seem to home when they feel like it, leaving you to do even less damage than usual. :|

There's a funny thing about SA: If you're good at Touhou, the game is easier. If you're not as good at Touhou, the game will completely destroy you. That's because the lives and power system rewards skill and punishes screwups.
This is true of every Touhou game. SA just encourages you to be more defensive by rewarding defensiveness rather than point-nabbing or scoring. Unfortunately, it also knows it's a defensive game so it brings on the hurt =[

I think you can find a way to make them all work if you specialize with one, though. ReimuA is terrible for me, but I can indeed reach Utsuho (beating her is a different matter) with MariB. I have a loathesome tendency to value flexibility over, y'know, actual power. :|

To be honest. Marisa's shot types are all pretty solid. It's just that ReimuA does so much god damage with her regular shot, and her bomb lasts all weekend that makes her so useful.

I found both Patchouli's and Alice's cards pretty easy, especially Alice's. I don't know how bad it is outside of Normal, but I personally think Return Inanimateness is one of the easiest, outside of Straw Doll Kamikaze and Mercury Poison.
Spring Clusterfuck is bad initially, but seems to get easier once you pass the initial bullet bum rush. Straw Doll just tests your ability to lead bullets, and Return distracts you with explosions but really is just dodging slow round bullets from all sides.
Mercury Poison requires much less movement than it looks and can get hectic the longer the card goes, Princess Undine is pretty much a superpowered pre-spellcard Cirno attack from EoSD (anyone notice that? O_o), and Philosopher's stone is no-nonsense grab bag bullet dodging. I'm not familiar with the rest.

Other than the bosses (which I still can't remember the specifics), the stages play virtually the same: Heavy streaming that is almost impossible to change directions in yet not doing so every five seconds will force you to bomb. And then I played ESPsomethingorother, and...it was more of the same. Maybe I'm just spoiled by ZUN putting a lot of thought into the danmaku?

You really are tsundere for this game. :P I'd say that this is a poor choice for a first extra, but that's likely your reason. >_> Just a tip from my experience: Don't try and get more than one extra life via UFOs. You'll just die trying to get them all. One life through UFOs gives you 5 lives for Nue.

I love them all, really. Except for the last seven. Shingyoku's boring, YuugenMagan and Yin-Yang Orb aren't really humanoid, Sake Insect is an insect, Tsuchinoko is a snake thing, Meira is a selfish samurai bitch who's too hard for a stage 2 boss, and I could give a rat's ass about the Great Tengu. It helps to have most of your emotion drained five or so years back when you're a complete and utter fuckwit who was near-universally reviled in one forum. It then also helps that the banning in mid '04 causes something to snap, not to mention it helps that said forum had a three strikes you're out sort 'o deal.
It also helped that I then travelled the 'net a lot more and saw horrible stuff like the harlequin fetus (as an aside don't GIS that or google it. ever. you have been warned) thus desensitizing myself to horrible things at a young age. Except the fetus was back when I was like eleven or so, so... yeah. :x

It's grossly overinflated due to some glitch in the system that happened in the first wipe of the board that doubled everyone's post count that they had in CPMC. The reason I wasn't affected was because Edible reset my visible post count to zero soon afterwards. If you look at Purvis' past posts from his profile it's closer to 2600. Eh, it took me less than 150 tries each to beat 'em. As opposed to 1000+ for Kaguya (DAMN HER and DAMN HER 9-7). In the same game, I can't beat Mokou's card that isn't the fiery pinwheel one-- I still haven't gotten more than two photos on the one where she has shitloads of colours flying everywhere. :<
I'd personally go for Ran or Mokou first. They seem a lot easier then someone like Flandre.
I don't want to see Ran again. I still haven't beaten her final in StB, and that's on STAGE EIGHT. I've done better against Shikieiki herself than against Ran. How embarrassing. >_>

Argh, I recorded stages 2 and 3 of my UFO lunatic 1cc, but there was noticeable slowdown at points. The argh part is that I'm pretty sure it's all because of UNZAN, so I didn't bother to rerecord (usually if there's more than one brief spot of 57 FPS or so I cut the recording). That, and I have to use Virtualdub to link two videos together because the recording went 9 seconds more than one file can hold on stage 3. >_>

Because a "survival score run" is what I do every run. :| And I don't think I've ever gotten more than 150 million, if that. 'sides, the reason I use Marisa A now (back when I first 1cc'd EoSD lunatic I still used Marisa B) is because frankly Marisa B is an inferior choice to Marisa A in every possible way. You have to shotgun to do damage that isn't even as much as Marisa A does, your damage output is dependent on your laser, and Master Spark isn't as useful when you get good enough to end every spell card on one bomb anyway (except Scarlet Meister lol)

The cool part was that as a result of my incompetence, I stayed away from those scenes and my character was as abstinent as could be for an ero rpg (ie: only had to suffer two of them) while everyone else was cavorting around the mansion sleeping with everybody and their maid.
My character then ended up as the master of the mansion in the next storyline. AW YEAH. She's probably gonna get killed, though. :|

Master Spark is a lot easier when you realize that the stars Marisa fires out to supplement the spark are somehow aimed. I'm not sure exactly how, but I know that they fire in mostly straight lines if you stand still.
