Title: Video Game Music Thread
Post by: Esper on October 27, 2014, 09:28:02 PM
Let's be honest: when people play video games, the music is something that will make or break the experience, and others would say the same for the graphics or story of a game. I notice that there's no video game OST thread, so I figured that we needed a share thread. I myself am a big JRPG nut, and what a pleasant thing it is to have enjoyable music in what can otherwise be a very boring genre.

Note: Please post the title of the video (Or the name of the song) below the link to make it easier to discern. Nobody wants to click sixteen million youtube links they don't know. Remixes are fine (and in fact encouraged if you like it)

To start the thread off, have some music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9HDIjMqzSc
Golden Sun (GBA) ~ Saturos Theme

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ8nyFGuqBo
Lunar the Silver Star Story (PSX / PSP / Sega CD) ~ Wind Nocturne (Luna's Boat Song)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36TdZx8VgbA
Final Fantasy VI (SNES/SFC/PSX/lots of systems) ~ Opera House scenario with voices (Aria di Mezzo Carattere)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b1ZWi-wTTw
Bravely Default (3DS) ~ Love's Vagrant (Ringabel's Theme)

if this isn't a good thread please don't kill me

Wicked Flight: Bravely Default (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHeuR_bC9GM)

Probably trumps any RPG music I've heard. Even things like Seymor's Battle Theme which I used to rate really highly; or anything from Pokemon.

Impossible (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vrc5lv0O8yo) and In Circles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGMWL8cOeAU) from Transistor. Also; as an added bonus; an In Circles and _n C_rcl_s [The latter being the tone shift for the 2nd part of a boss fight] mashup: Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUrr11UjbyM)

And then we have Growing Wings from Drakenguard 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCN3J3EnzVM) I advise you to not delve too deep into this franchise if you value your sanity. [No; seriously] Although feel free to listen to One - Variation 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L8BVjupnYM) from Drakenguard 3 and Four (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llGOobmaNrY) from the same game.

Might post more tomorrow.

I'll resist the urge to fill the entire thread with Falcom music for now, so I'll post songs I don't usually see in threads/discussions like this.

Jurassic Park (SNES) - River (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xq2wXuDUv4)

Jurassic Park Part 2 (SNES) - Dark Jungle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FggOnzJlZI)

Fatal Fury Wild Ambition - The Battle (Geese Howard) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q8lkepnuNk)

Fatal Fury Wild Ambition - The Long Pole (Billy Kane) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFXZjEAgJdU)

Fatal Fury Special - Ryo Sakazaki (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mhu8GNd3JHI)

Ys I (NES) - Final Battle #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFMCanF0m6M) I know I said I'd resist posting music from Falcom related games for now, but I thought this would be okay since it only plays in the NES version of Ys I when you fight the real Dark Fact.
NES Ys I is weird

8-bit music always will have a place in my heart. It was a time when it was clear when game music was good or bad, no generic flair or effects to cover behind. Good 8-bit music means good melody, and that makes it an awesome thing to remix. Have a few of my favourite examples:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Bloody Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgkxSkF7QOU)

Darkman007 - Contra Force cover (character select, stage 1 and stage 2 themes) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6jXkSiiOvU)

On a less action-packed note, it's growing cold on this half of the planet, so have something I consider the most calming theme a game can have.

Heroes of Might and Magic II - Snow theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r64gkOM_gjU)

Bastion Soundtrack - Terminal March (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-aexLJKwME)
I've never played Bastion but it might be my favourite game soundtrack ever.

Crypt of the NecroDancer Alpha OST - Zone 1 Level 1 w/Shopkeeper Vocals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkOnC-dJ1E)
Now, I love Crypt of the NecroDancer - perfect mix of rhythm game and rougelike. And the music is composed by Danny Baranowsky?! Can't get much better.

Rayman 2 Soundtrack - The Precipice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxQdWubPtK8)
Childhood game, right here. I love this track especially.

The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion OST - Through The Valleys (http://youtu.be/UnW6625hw_w)
I. Love. Oblivion.

Dodonpachi Saidaioujou OST - Taiji (Boss) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj4Nz_9g5o8)

Rayman 2 Soundtrack - The Precipice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxQdWubPtK8)
Childhood game, right here. I love this track especially.

Anyone who didn't play Rayman 2 as a child has no childhood or possibly even a soul. It is the definition of emotions with few words. Rayman as a series in its beginning is the idea of a painting come to life. Excuse me while I gather like six of my favorite Rayman songs that I can remember. If you haven't, play this game NOW. Find some medium of playing it. I don't care what. Rayman 2 is a great platformer and is probably the definition of innocent fun. You don't really think in Rayman, you just kinda feel, from what I recall of my early childhood. It may feel repetitive at times if you look at it, but Rayman 2 has otherwise aged really well as a game. Not as a cinematic piece, mind you, but it's a damn good game. Call it nostalgia goggles, I don't care. Try it.

guys pls play it

(For the good of the order, let's put Smooth McGroove's YouTube channel here because it's probably one of the best acapella arrange channels you'll find, and I challenge you to find someone else.) (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=UUJvBEEqTaLaKclbCPgIjBSQ) (Note: Brentalfloss is great and all, but I prefer TRANSFERRING tracks to voice rather than rewriting it to fit a different theme, which is perfectly fine by itself.)

For sample, Together we Ride from Fire Emblem (GBA) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxYqsLPtqAk)

Now with the Rayman tracks

Rayman 1 (PSX) - Band Land (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-h4-D9zko8)
This song defines whimsy.

Rayman 1 (PSX) - Candy Chateau (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3lcgPQnB6k)
This song is uncontrolled whimsy.

Rayman 2 (PSX? / N64 / Dreamcast / DS / 3DS / Probably everything else, this thing's been ported more often than Tetris*) - Cave of Bad Dreams (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXimKvqNmP0)
It comes off as creepy, but still somewhat welcoming. I don't know why I feel that way about it.

Rayman 2 (All systems past PSX era) - Iron Mountains (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQAuTZCALFw)
I always liked songs that imposed a minor key along with a major key. It felt like an emotional cycle. The triumphant music makes it better.

Rayman 2 (All past PSX) - The Sanctuary of Water and Ice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjjYMmYcm4o)
This song  made me want to get Rayman 2. This was on one of the demonstration discs for the dreamcast that one of my mother's friends had handy. He introduced me to so many good games through this. This is why I am a neet. :V

*Please note that this is an intentional hyperbolic statement. Tetris has been ported so many times that you can find a version of it for your TI-84 calculator. I am not joking.

I won't add too many here.

Supremacy (C64) - Main Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFjEkKKKQlo)
Jeroen Tel shows off some of the insanity the SID chip in the C64 can perform, and the result is a fantastic chiptune.

Battle Garegga (arcade, Saturn) - Stage 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iEvJfdemUs)
YM2151-based Detroit Techno to start off the entire game and the OST in full? Hell yes. Even if this game is notoriously brutal and unforgiving by STG standards.

Tropico 3 (PC, X360) - La Gran Juma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCxy-4IAgzo)
Happy Latin music is the perfect complement to Banana Republic Dictator Simulator. This track in particular puts a devious and silly grin on my face. ?V?va El Presidente!

Age of Empires 2 (PC) - Shamburger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omNxhO54PsQ)
Start a game, find your resources, make villagers, scout the map, decide on strategy...such an integral part of my upbringning that I continue to follow the game and competitive events there 15 years later.

Age of Empires 3 (PC) - Felonious Junk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5Q0mxY9Ivc)
Decent strategy game, poor Age game, but good god, the OST's nothing short of amazing. In-game, this track for me adds a particular sense of tension and uneasy anticipation to my actions.

SimCity 3000 (PC) - Central Park Sunday (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzWLwASzJpM)
Smooth jazz is hard to go wrong with. It's also excellent in-game by letting me relax a bit whilst managing my city and ruining it with diasters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XE9eTGH_tXk
Super Robot Wars MX: The Maimed Conductor. It's a stage BGM. Also appears in Impact and 2nd OGs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57jD2KhOM94
Super Robot Wars OG Gaiden: Roar, O One Who Breaks Supremacy. This is the midseason upgrade song, btw.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8Hi2NGQHUU
SRW Lord of Elemental 3: Pride of Justice: Awakening of Flame. One of my absolute favorite songs in the history of the series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5gP5YDDeGg
Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Skull Heart Arrives. Crossbone Gundam is a manga, but it's made appearances in video games, including Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam G Generation. So I think this song is actually in some Gundam-related vidya.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sP1vG0gCWAw
SRW Lord of Elemental 3: Pride of Justice: Ocean of Determination. This and "Awakening of Flame" are the possession theme songs, which, to put it simply, is super mode.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgTyaLoCCDo
The Last Remnant: Nisus. Great song. It has good music in general, but it's not the best game. It's pretty solid, though it takes a certain sensibility to enjoy. It's kind of like the lost Saga game or something, since I think the Saga guy had a hand in the production. I forgot his name. Dammit. And I really like the Saga games!

Boy, I remember when this board used to have themed "best VGM" tournaments! Those were good times.

I'd like to recommend the Dustforce soundtrack. If you have time, listen to the whole OST! Otherwise, here's a few of my favorites:

OHH love these kind of topics.

Been in a real megaman mood as of late (bout time too I've been listening to nothing but touhou for a year now.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veQdprvnY3c
Standby, Zero! - Megaman X Command Mission (This song always get's me in a good mood!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxbEoUAqtAs
Departure - Megaman Zero 2 (This song is how you start a megaman game!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiE6ssOyQPg
Planet Namek - Dragonball Z Budokai (Honestly one of my favorites from a fighting game... before touhou...)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWO4ff1HXYY
Don't speak her name! - Fire Emeblem Awakening (T-T oh god the feels..)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWtpAzbEnc8
Eternity - Blue Dragon (I honestly can't tell if people really hate this song or like it but it's so nonsense that I enjoy any boss fight I get myself into, really need to finish it though it's been years.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VF3FZF3WBs
Battle theme - Golden Sun Dark Dawn (Pretty overall disappointed with the game but Motoi Sakuraba came back and did wonders with the OST and made it still sound like GS, but with all the music Sakuraba has done I could just make a whole list of his stuff, dark souls... tales series... star ocean... kid icarus uprising to name a few lol. Just wanted to go with one that felt closest to my childhood while still being somewhat current.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z11QWrgPPa0
Battle 3/Elimination Battle - Fate/Extra (This song sounds so smooth and just right, can't really think of much else to say or how to best describe it. I need to get back to playing this again I find this game to be way better then the anime.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPSqAh26lmw
Harmony - Runescape (Anyone who use to play RS? No? Eh that was a long time ago for me. This version (not the newest one) holds a lot of memories for me and my time spent with my guild in RS and was my first song I learned on the piano.)

I need to think of more later, there is way to much. Heck yeah on any Golden sun, Fire emblem, and SRW tracks!

Ar nosurge - em-pyei-n vari-fen jang; (http://youtu.be/PNx9GZhXRVU)
It's Russian, though Russian translated from Japanese.

Ar nosurge - Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; (http://youtu.be/Bsax70r7dlw)
So bipolar, and it even makes sense in story.

Ace Combat Infinity - Revelation (http://youtu.be/v6vJsQnCcas)
An AC3 remix? Huh.

Malicious Rebirth - Prison of Soul (http://youtu.be/2gRrQRx-Q3g?t=38m6s)

Also, not actually video game music, but from a fandisc:
Hymmnos Chronicle (Based on Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica) - EXEC_with.METHOD_METAFALICA/. ~at A.D. 3310~ (http://youtu.be/A9cZ0fU0LCQ)
This whole soundtrack. Awesome enough that I bought the album. Though wasn't expecting shipping to be three times the disc... :(

I think it's on PSN. Or you could try to find a physical copy secondhand, because then you'll have that fat double-disc jewel case with an instruction manual. I remember when there were instruction manuals so large that single-disc games were in multi-disc cases. ...that doesn't make me feel old. It makes me feel nostalgic, more than anything.

Anyway, more music. Hrm...

Chrono Cross: Time's Scar <---CLASSIC SONG HERE GUYS
This was the song that made me get a PS1 just for Chrono Cross back in the day.  Oh the memories~

Anywho,

Knights in the Nightmare - Clash With the Newborn Melad Margus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5LlnJ8atuY)
With a ridiculously intense boss fight comes an equally intense track to get you pumped up.  Every song in this game is so good this game in general is so good.

7th Dragon - Jungle Navigation (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qG5LRlDtpeg)
My ringtone :V  Another game I'd just love to link the entire OST of, there is just so much good about it.  Fortunately it's all right there on that channel :derp:

Etrian Odyssey III - Chalky Woods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVMNBnJ-eYQ)
Easily my favorite stratum in an EO game visually, and with great music accompanying it.

Etrian Odyssey II - A Sudden Gust of Wind that Calls for Death (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM2Og3EVGmc)
The sound of impending doom.

Shantae - Zombie Caravan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y1sqdsk3nc)
Great GBC platformer with great music etc

Rosenkreuzstilette - 28 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKItxMxqpEs)
Trauare's stage theme.  Upbeat with the perfect tempo to get you in the mood for Megaman-esque platforming.

Mega Man Unlimited - The Hate Comes Out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbsYCParU4U)
Music for a certain boss fight from an amazing Mega Man fangame.  Another game where I'd really just recommend the entire OST, you can't go wrong.

Mega Man 9 - Galaxy Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdDbbzuq1vY)
Yeah too much bootleg we need some of the real stuff in here too :V

Mega Man ZX Advent - Trap Phantasm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NscuHPnHqbs)
More Mega Man

The Genius of Sappheiros - Battle 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63_d17Uyi70)
This game had a lot of battle/boss themes where I just had to sit back for a couple minutes before taking my turn to enjoy them the first time I heard them.  This was definitely one of those themes.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg - Bossa Nova of Briny Air (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGhMiFWMfT4)
This game is where all the catchiest tunes in the world go to hang out.

Sora - Icarus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79AunYHAq5w)
This isn't my favorite song from the series, but it's certainly the most memorable one to me.  Perhaps because it's used for such a memorable fight in this game?

In no particular order. But it all starts from my childhood when i had NES.
Blaster Master - Area 7 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25a-bA5a89c)
It's frantic, like it's urging you to race to the finish. Also the song is so great, it's even used for the final boss, instead of the usual boss music.

Ninja Gaiden - Depths of Wickedness (http://youtu.be/Zsm4S1EKGGc?t=17m48s)
I spent countless hours trying to beat the stage this songs plays on, so it pretty much stuck in my head.

Pretty much the whole OST of Castlevania II. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuBSUppCTX0&spfreload=10)
Title says it all. Whole ost is awesome.

Final Fantasy V - Clash on the Big Bridge (http://youtu.be/l0JnXdfoYpY)
Obligatory Clash on the Big Bridge.

Castlevania - AoS - Top Floor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7QR01Jgwg4)
More Castlevania, since you can't have enough Castlevania.

Golden Sun - Mars Lighthouse (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SqApUTiJKA&spfreload=10)
All of GS ost is awesome, but if i have to pick one it'll probably be this one.

Trails in the Sky FC - Silver Will (http://youtu.be/ODjj64QFV2g)
Lorence is awesome, as is his theme.

Shadow Hearts From the New World - Lady Tears II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MRHV_Cf41E)
Spoilers.
Final boss theme. It's powerful, it's a perfect match for the fight and reflect the tone of the fight really well.

Xenosaga III OST - Godsibb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjPWTEtuv74)
Personally i think it is Yuki Kajiura's masterpiece.

OFF - Pristine Avatar Beat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyOvTf2HolA&spfreload=10)
OFF is a really weird game and ost is quite matching.
Again, it's a final boss(es) theme

Transistor - The Spine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41tIUr_ex3g&spfreload=10)
As with the whole Transistor OST it's better to listen to ingame, but it's still a piece i just can't pass on sharing.

World of Goo - Cog in the Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dn_a0E1038I&spfreload=10)
Random voices and screams mixed with guitar. It's quite dark and unsetting.

Gravity Rush - Douse Shinundakara (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpqOrFPcWXk&spfreload=10)
But let's end it with a happy jazzy theme that is an instumental version of the credits theme.

My PC-heavy gaming history really is showing itself here. :V

Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, X360, PS3) - LIMB Clinic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YQPydQnaoo)
The sound of...progress? It's an extremely ambivalent and unnatural theme, yet with the setting it gives an aura of futurism. It really solidifies the ambiguous, relatively open-choice nature of the game.

Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine (PC, others?) - Title (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KtgqVocgoc)
A whimsical early-theatre-style honky-tonk is perfect to complement an over-the-top and classy heisting game, and it continues throughout!

Dune (PC) - Chani's Eyes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPEDAR7qWRI)
A great use of the OPL3 chip. It evokes feelings of isolation, foreignness, and uncertain adventuring to me.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC) - Dirge for Planet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDCNlqMgnvo)
The heavy accent is a bit tough to understand, but it characterises the Zone's surreal and desolate nature very effectively.

Try it.

As someone who also grew up with Rayman 2, I can attest to this. Or at least, the advice onto playing this game. I wouldn't say everything said above about the game, but it's still a great game.

But for shame, you included Band Land and Candy Chateau (which are great tracks, I'll admit it), yet you forgot about Picture City (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-Au4QJRcA8)? It's a shame that Rayman 1 was very difficult, so many people never really got far enough to hear this track. However, if you played Rayman 1 and managed to venture this far into the game, you were met with a beautiful piece of music. R?mi Gazel was a great composer for this game.

And in Rayman 2, I'll have to recommend Spider Attack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIZzz9RFpsI). This track sets an unsettling tone, and it freaked us out when we were kids. The spider was one of the most fearsome enemies due to it's speed, and whenever you heard this music, you knew you were in trouble. I'll never forget the first time I was playing this game and ran into one of those spiders.

And because I shouldn't just fill a post up with only Rayman, let's also throw in a track that many never got to hear.

Battletoads - Rat Race (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WSxcWFA0dw), the infamous game for it's notorious difficulty (I've come oh so close to clearing it, but The Revolution always gets me, which is odd, considering it's one of the easier stages). If there's one thing that Battletoads had other than it's difficulty however, it was it's soundtrack. It's simplistic, yet very catchy. Once again though, it's a shame people haven't really heard this track ingame, due to the previous challenges (personally, Terra Tubes gets me, Turbo Tunnel seems to be the most brought up stage though). Also, the same effect that you feel in the game is not present here, as when you progress further in the stage, the music speeds up, getting more and more frantic, and the races get more difficult. By itself, the track is nothing special. But if you've ever made it to Rat Race, you know what I mean when I state that it gets very frantic.

But no seriously, Picture City is a great track to be perfectly honest.

Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam: Skull Heart Arrives. Crossbone Gundam is a manga, but it's made appearances in video games, including Super Robot Wars and SD Gundam G Generation. So I think this song is actually in some Gundam-related vidya.

I have heard the Skull heart theme in SD Gundam G Generation Spirits but I am not that much a fan of it and prefer the regular Crossbone themes instead.

That being said, the MS Igloo scenario has GODLIKE music in it.
Here is the emotive theme (for lack of a better description) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSybX3p5zOI
Here is the enemy turn theme which make me wish that we could recruit the MS Igloo antagonist pilot but don't get to XD :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e-ho_ATm7E

Yeah, awesome music but the story itself?
He was only a kid, why? ;-;

The game OP is quite nice too :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDmws9fMnbs
It's nice to hear it in the last stage too. ^^

Lately, I have founda website with video games radios on it.
From there I found the Legacy Music Hour podcast which allow you to listen to various video game music.

If there's one thing that Battletoads had other than it's difficulty however, it was it's soundtrack. It's simplistic, yet very catchy.

To drive the point home, here's some awesome bass that is just perfect for dodging whirpools or running away from giant cogwheels.

BattleToads - Surf City / Terra Tubes  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj4NAdwr6A0)

On topic of unexpectedly good music, how do you like your HEAVY METAL in 8-bit?

Super C - Area 6 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UxACGMhyTA)

Continuing our trek on old-school consoles, you know you have an awesome Sega Genesis soundtrack when you can make it sound almost like there's an actual guitar playing and make a damn good use of it.

Comix Zone - Episode 3, Page 1-3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MT15aZZv-1w)
Comix Zone - Episode 2, Page 2-2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhgthDR0uIQ) (not the best example of the above, but still a personal favourite)

Since we're on Sega Genesis, another one of my favourite soundtracks is for The Adventures of Batman & Robin. Made by Jesper Kyd. Yes, the one of Hitman and Assassin's Creed fame. Some don't like it because it doesn't sound too Batman-ish, but it's Jesper Kyd, someone I consider a genius of electronic music.

The Adventures of Batman & Robin - Level 2 - A Two Sided Story (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSuPZWqOGiY)
The Adventures of Batman & Robin - Level 3 - Tea Time! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq7fGZ_-RM0) (Mad Hatter's theme, so beware of going insane!)

On a more conventional action-packed note: METAL SLUG! All games, all themes. For a taste, here's my favourite stage theme. (For some reason, I keep hearing enemy soldiers screaming all the time in my head when this plays. Not that it's a bad thing :])

Metal Slug - Ridge 256 (Stage 4) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fk_wTNRyUPI)

And here's the theme for the most epic moment in the series - BLASTING AWAY INTO SPACE chasing a UFO, blowing up huge asteroids along the way!

Metal Slug 3 - Into the Cosmos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzk-teCabiQ)

And to finish it all, a bit more soft theme that always makes me cry. PEACE FOREVER!

Metal Slug - Hold You Still (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR49_o1hV0c)

Zero (Ace Combat Zero) (https://youtu.be/80XAJKqRU9k) definitely fits the bill for epic orchestral video game music. Especially when you're listening to this while flying a fighter jet minutes before a nuclear missile is launched.

If you're into chiptunes, Main Stage Theme (Devil's Crush) (https://youtu.be/nHCCoNyNFtY) gets a spot in my rankings as BGM suited for any high-speed, blood-pumping action game. In my opinion, being in a pinball game just doesn't do it any justice.

S.S.H's remix of Wish (MIME) (https://youtu.be/_TYP3Zp2x24) is an awesome version of the PC-98 original (https://youtu.be/0gQckOZPrYs), and is part of my YouTube "battle music" playlist.

Gourmet Race (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) (https://youtu.be/TvjPa4RnSxY) also stands as one of the best remixes of already good music, as well as a perfect track for your motivational gaming mix.

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ I've Never Seen Someone Fall so Gracefully (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOUF5bLu6QQ)
The first time I cried at a video game over the story. FE:A doesn't have an AMAZING, TWISTY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL story, but let me tell you that the way everything is aligned will make you cry a little sometimes. This music is what fucking did it to me.

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ Don't Speak Her Name (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21O9x8nYoqY)
Urghhhhhhh this piece's so emotionallll

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ "Ha ha! Yes, it will take some getting used to!" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNApU-qXXDg)
This song in particular is just so great. It's basically the idea of JRPG x Strategy RPG x Dating Sim. If you've never played FE:A...

You either
All of which are understandable. If you don't like grinding or (strategy) JRPGs in general, FE:A will not be your thing.

Drakengard 3: "This Silence is Mine". Even has the lyrics (not translated), so you can sing along!

JAM Project: "Babylon". Credit roll song for SRW 2nd OGs, iirc.

I think it's time to get in on this, haha.

Vs. Zero - Megaman: Network Transmission (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CopKab81u3I)
I used to play the crap out of this game when I was younger. This is probably one of, if not, my favourite track from the game.

Vs. Trainer (Kanto) - Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lovrr8i6Lo)
I still remember the chills I got the first time I heard this, haha. It'd been a long time since I'd played the originals since my saves had been corrupted, but I love how they remixed this.

I'll Face Myself (Reincarnation Version) - Persona 4 Golden (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDr_krEQNrU)
Man. This gave me chills too when I first heard this during the
Marie
battle in P4G. This just made the battle even more awesome in my opinion.  The Persona series is full of awesome music.

Alchemist With a Wavering Heart - Super Robot Wars: Original Generations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUmTTAVqvEE)
I've played both games for the GBA, but I still hope to play the Playstation 2 version someday. This song sounds way better in the new version too compared to the GBA version.

Alchemist With a Wavering Heart - Super Robot Wars: Original Generations
The Impact version of that song still haunts my days. Every time she'd show up in that, the stage would get exponentially more frustrating (Impact is a frustrating game due to questionable design decisions).

OGs made a lot of old versions of songs really good. And I like how just about everyone got their own theme. Most of the cast having "Born to Fight" in OG1 GBA was painful. Seriously, dood. Go play OGs. It's fun! And then play 2nd OGs, too! PLAY MORE SRW! EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU! :3

Duck Tales 2 - Bermuda Stage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wvn00CBI-bI)
Darkwing Duck - Bushroot Stage  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K0SCfzEu3g)

For a bit more conventional stuff, have one of the reasons why I like the original Max Payne - sequel doesn't have anything this high on adrenaline.

Boomerang Flash theme - WILD ARMS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmZUt3Xv-r0)
Zed Theme - WILD ARMS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qs63ZjOjD2E)

Filgaia - WILD ARMS: ACF (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9chSZuGHUM), Probably my favorite world map theme.
At the End of the Wilderness ver. Detonator - WILD ARMS 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5aFjzLa8tw), Fave of all WILD ARMS tracks.

Some underrated(?) PS1 RPG tracks...
Battle 5 - Saga Frontier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgewJQqw_F0)
Fight! Alkaiser - Saga Frontier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vSpVhXWRIY), Now with vocal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EugQfuu1Y6Q)

Battle 3 - Grandia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BOw6QPt1-g)

Video soundtracks are my favorite type of music, and pretty much is the only music venue I entertain myself with.  I don't have time nor desire to search for anything else, since during my free time I am always playing video games, or looking for video games to play. :3

Ar Nosurge for PS3.  One of the biggest best surprises of an RPG I ever played, in story, characters, and music.  Battles aren't too shabby either.

Oh nice, another Ar Nosurge fan, they are so hard to find! :D I like almost all of the music from what I've been hearing so far. (I'm new to the Ar series mind you) I read the entire backstory and enjoyed a lot of the Ciel Nosurge songs as well.  I've never seen characters well fleshed out in all my years of RPG gaming.  I think Sarly would have to be my favorite character (so far) though, she's so smart, and so sweet.  Ion's Genometrics are driving me up the wall, hearing "Dummy!" every minute!  Arghhh!!  But I did find out I have to solve other Genometrics before solving hers, apparently.  Guess she is the unique one.  Other than that, she seems sweet, but she seemed more likable in Ciel Nosurge so far.  I'm not too far in Ar Nosurge though, so I do expect some improvement.  Nay grew on me a lot though, and I got past her faults once I knew more about her dark past.  Err, getting off topic. . .

Anyways, Elder Scrolls Online has some pretty good music I found out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40Csug-yFIo

I don't own the game, but I love the music I've been hearing from it.

One well-known game with amazing OST in general is, of course, Banjo Kazooie. Pretty much all tunes are great and memorable, and that recurring key theme which in minor variation pops up in basically every single theme of the OST binds everything together nicely, while in the seperate worlds themself the instruments of the BGM change fluently depending on which region you are in. Just an overall great experience, and one of the OSTs closest to my heart. Therefore it is hard to pick favorites, but to name a few:

Click Clock Wood, Spring Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXoaTcf_3vo)
Freezeezy Peak (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKv9WeS8BOs)
Mad Monster Mansion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2b_OsR1bHY)
Final Battle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY9v3a_wvlI)

Another N64 game with great music (which also featured themes that fluently changed instruments when you progressed through a dungeon, hey!) is Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. Some very nice themes here, for (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI1yz6Aiybg&t=3m13s) dungeons (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU75vYX3mj4&t=3m29s), open fields (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nCd8JVUTSw), and, of course, giant mecha karaoke (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEE66AMzGNg).

An SNES game with a great OST that I haven't seen mentioned here yet is Sparkster. Starting from the upliftingly heroic Stage 1 - Lakeside (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLwiusoA7t0) and diving straight into heavy guitars with Stage 2 - Steelworks (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrA7LrmiafI), it is just badass through and through... and then you get launched into space. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiR0YgauM10)
Just a phenomenal OST from start to finish.

No mention of the Xenoblade Chronicles soundtrack? Sadness. The whole soundtrack is great, and this is coming from someone who's never played the game. Here's some of my favorites:

Just in case, "shmup" is short for "shoot-em-up", the genre that ZUN-made official Touhou games belong to, you know. I have to say that good music seems to be as important as good gameplay for them.

Ah okay, always thought Touhou's genre was called "bullet hell", never heard of "shmup" before.  I have definitely played my fair share of "shoot em ups" though. :)  Thank you for the explanation, I am grateful.

Suppose I should toss a song out since I posted twice already.  From an old school shoot em up game no less. ;)

Sekiha Tenkyoken - Super Robot Wars J (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q0sQPkp1_8)
Sounds awesome even on the GBA's sound card, haha.

Chaos Angel Act 3 - Sonic Advance 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtGxsGydN-M)
I used to listen to this a lot in the Sound Test in the game, haha. Not sure why, but I just really liked the song.

That's the entire soundtrack of Brutal Doom right here. As far as I know, this consists of metal arranges of every original Doom and Doom II song. Extremely addictive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J04Y9i08LGc
Here's one of the original songs, Message for the Archvile, a quiet, moody one from Doom II. It works best in the game itself where it magnifies the already great atmosphere, but it's excellent as a separate listen, too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI1HJWTTZ3c
Now for the master of computer game music, Alexander Brandon! This is Tubelectric from Jazz Jackrabbit II, a rather energetic tune.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBzDv24IOYQ
The UNATCO theme from Deus Ex, incredibly atmospheric electronic music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOjvrPLw9Ws
The Vault City theme from Fallout 2, definitely the catchiest piece of music from both games. The other ones are just as moody though, unconventional sound, perfect for the post-apocalyptic setting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDB1b1tvBBw
I've seen Heroes IV and II, but not III? Come on? Fortress, the best town theme in the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-3u9vO9UUE
System Shock (the first one), the tune that welcomes you to the game in the Medical level. It also blends wonderfully with the ambient sounds of the Citadel station.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao9EsDhwtT0
The menu theme from the original Unreal Tournament. Definitely prepares you for the upcoming epic multiplayer fights.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMK3AyNcbfA
I could go on for a while, but let's end the list with the nicest Elder Scrolls track I know, Auriel's Ascension. Excellent memories associated with this one. I used to be quite addicted to Morrowind and when Oblivion came out, I desperately wanted to try it,  but my graphics card wouldn't work with Pixel Shaders 2.0, so I had to use an utility called Oldblivion. The game looked worse than Morrowind, but at least it worked! Unfortunately Oblivion turned out to be quite disappointing without proper mods, but I immediately fell in love with this track.

Is it, really? I'd like to disagree. Even if orksies are underwhelming aside from week 1 Behemoths, the one thing they have is the best town theme in the game.

Heroes of Might and Magic III - Stronghold (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iNjldnNSPY)

On topic of Elder Scrolls, Morrowind is definitely great in music department. Here are my favourite themes.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Peaceful Waters (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tWdVydRceU)
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - The Road Most Traveled (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSr2Aj3RtaA)
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Nerevar Rising (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mUmqH1ZHW8)

Speaking of Jeremy Soule... FOR THE EMPEROR!

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Blood Ravens Approach (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHUynu3bNXM)

BONUS: Since I'm playing Daggerfall these days, here's my favourite theme from there as well.

Oh well, that's just a matter of preference. The Stronghold theme just doesn't stick in my head like the other themes do. On the other hand, I like how the Fortress music picks up pace and becomes frantic to reflect the terror of the swamp. I like both Behemoths and Hydras themselves equally (best Level 7 units if you use them properly), but that's a bit off topic, so I'll post my favourite, dramatic battle music that never seems to get old:

Ah, agree here fully. My favourite battle theme from the game as well.

Since there's quite a nostalgic mood lately, time to show what good old PC MIDI is capable of.

Warcraft II - Orc mission 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8Ev3X0aLtQ)
Warcraft II - Orc mission 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bFCe6FbbZ0)

Yes, that's pretty much the whole in-game soundtrack, but leaving anything out would be a sacrilege.

Also, as an addendum to that load'o'shmupthemes of mine, I finally found my favourite boss theme from CAVE games.

DOS will never have a game with a better soundtrack than that. I remember firing up my old Gateway 2000 to listen to some of the music on its SoundBlaster 16 back in my elementary school days.

Duke Nukem 3D - Departure (e4m10) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZfeJiPsxqY)
(Such a pity I couldn't find Duke 3D music played with actual Soundblaster, it sounds great in-game.)

On topic of old FPS games, if I were to speak about Doom I'd have to post the whole soundtrack for the first two games, which Pirx did in a way already. But there's one theme that can't stay unmentioned. Also used for what can be called True Last Boss of Spear of Destiny (sequel of Wolfenstein 3D), in all the Soundblaster glory:

Doom II - Evil Incarnate (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30L0dFfOYs4)

And while we're at it, here are my favourite themes from a certain other game on Doom's engine.

Heretic - The Docks (e1m1) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTTiQiEKjwU)
Heretic - The Gatehouse (e1m3) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOgvTN9YNH4)

My own choice of a single track would be different:

Doom - Sign of Evil (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtlsH6RCH3k)

Why? Well, the first Doom was quite a striking experience for the contemporary players. It was part survival horror and did its best to overwhelm the player with its atmosphere of terror and the feeling of a hopeless fight. This tune played on the first actual boss level, the one with the famous Bruiser Brothers, and it does a great job of conveying the atmosphere of imminent danger and despair, which is further enforced by the episode's memorable ending. I sadly never had the chance to play Doom in 1993, and only got a real sound card in 1999, but I imagine it must've been a real shock for the players back then; something we're unlikely to experience again, spoiled with the modern audiovisuals.

As for Heretic, while the game is not as great as Doom, i think it is actually better in some respects: the atmosphere and art feels even more consistent than Doom's. It's a perfect blend. You've already posted my favourite piece of Heretic music (The Graveyard), but I actually prefer the MIDI rendition of this tune where the drums are much more emphasised and it takes on a very intense, aggressive nature (fittingly, since this music also plays on d'Sparil's level).

Sally (Black Label Daifukkatsu select screen) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2FDGa11A3c)

Best player select theme ever. Cut it from my list because it's long enough as it is.

Zatsuza (Black Label Daifukkatsu TLB) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QVa9qwxbRo)

Never got the hype behind this one. It sounds much worse than the original, ]-[|/34<#! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYFmJxmMGYI), IMHO.

Sally was my alarm tone for a while. Personally, I'm torn between that and Mushihimesama Futari's select theme.
I forgot to add DOOMSDAY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4zrBK6n6BM), Ketsui's select theme, which is a remix of Doom's theme.
Zatsuza is just one of those themes you just start to uncontrollably laugh at because of how ridiculous the boss fight is. I mean, facing a boss that shoots over 3000 bullets per second at you just demands a tear-stained laughter.

Does anyone know of any games with dark drum and bass / darkstep or similar sounds?

No mention of DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu Black Label Arrange Mode? Shame on thee. :colbert:
The entire freaking soundtrack was top-tier, and remains both my favorite soundtrack of all time and the only collection/compilation of music (soundtrack or album/EP) that I genuinely like in its entirety.
I'll give a special mention to NO REMORSE for being the most intense and exhilarating boss theme I've ever heard.

Never got the hype behind this one. It sounds much worse than the original, ]-[|/34<#! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYFmJxmMGYI), IMHO.
It's incredibly wild to the extent of ridiculousness, just like the Zatsuza boss fight itself.

8-bit music always will have a place in my heart. It was a time when it was clear when game music was good or bad, no generic flair or effects to cover behind. Good 8-bit music means good melody, and that makes it an awesome thing to remix.
Not that I dislike or can't appreciate a good melody (quite the contrary), but I personally would like to hear more non-melodic tracks in games. There are timbres and rhythms that match certain atmospheres perfectly.

Anyone here heard of Crypt of the NecroDancer (http://store.steampowered.com/app/247080/)?
Currently Early Access on Steam. It's basically a rhythm-based roguelike dungeon crawler.

Where you move/attack/interact to the beat. Naturally, it has good music.
(But you do have the option to use your own custom music)

Here's one of the songs in one of the levels:

Plus, if you're near the Shopkeeper, he will add vocals to the song, here's the vocal version:

I think video game music is especially important to me. It enhances the gaming experience by giving an environment or event a particular mood and atmosphere, in effect to give the player a sense of immersion. I'm eclectic with my musical tastes, so I like a wide variety of video game music. The quality and richness of a piece of video game music doesn't affect my level of enjoyment either; I can enjoy chiptune music just as much as I can enjoy CD quality music, as long as it is melodic and rhythmic. I have narrowed it down to just a few of my most favored tracks, so if anything I link to tickles your fancy, just let me know. It makes me happy to see when other people can enjoy a piece a music just as much as you do.

I nearly forgot how good Final Fight music is. Well, how it sounds in actual games is usually lacking, but the melodies themselves are a good base for remixes. Cases in point:

Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Guy's theme (aka Final Fight stage 1 theme) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Owy7vIdQAM)
Street Fighter Alpha 2 - Rolento's theme (aka Final Fight stage 5 theme) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dc_7jIGp5fY)
Ultra Street Fighter IV - Rolento's theme (aka Final Fight stage 4 boss theme ...yes, it's Rolento) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T0deq3gojM)

I can't really think of a certain theme for a selection of soundtracks, so I guess I'll just share a couple of tracks that I can't get out of my head (For a good reason).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzpnKmbJbNs
Majin Tensei - Omega: This is a updated version of the final boss theme from Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei 2. I like this version a little bit more than the original, mainly because of the sensation of dread it gives me (kinda what you'd expect in a demonic apocalypse).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y0347mS9T8
The Nameless Mod (A mod for the original Deus Ex) - Democracy Pt. I: A nice tune to listen to after going on one of many long and dangerous missions that this game throws at you. Some of these missions are arguably more brutal than the ones in Deus Ex.

Oh; this is still going?

Well; I guess I can contribute a few more. Enjoy some CHILDHOOD NOSTALGIA:

Ratchet and Clank 3 - Dr.Nefarious Boss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxYDZaqdTSg)

This is playing during a fight where literally at one point the guy pretends to be defeated, it starts a cutscene and he literally flies away while the heroes are distracted thinking they've won and actually laughs 'AHAHAHAHAHA SUCKERS!'. Also this in general is a pretty awesome fight.

While on the Ratchet and Clank final boss topic...
Chairman Drek's boss theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6fMI8HiIA0)

After a long journey, after you've visited all those areas you've been seeing in cutscenes [Which in itself is a signal that you are nearing the end, you've been seeing these places the whole game...]; your journy ends where it began, with the villian planning to blow up your homeworld to free the orbit for a world of his creation; literally made from torn-off parts of other planets, because his corporations polluted his planet so badly. [And the kicker is he's gonna do it all over again for the Cash]. This plays while you're fighting him in a giant mech, as he blows up the plateus he's fighting you on as he makes his way to the switch for the Planetbuster gun... where the fight concludes as you struggle to switch the weapon's charging cycle on and off. And the fight is HARD without the RYNO; which you have to grind hard for, requireing you to make use of most of your weapons because otherwise you'll run out of ammo.

And this is after a gruelling level where you're fighting through elite flying guards, tanks and hoverships. With this playing:
Kyzil Plateau - 2nd Visit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPFyrG7cVF4)

Atmospheric Pressure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvXTLmP_KkQ)

This is from Wrath of Cortex. Honestly while the game isn't excellent I think this boss theme is, especially combined with the boss fight, a sort of storm-cloud version of Crunch, who is hurling various attacks at you, and you need to attack where the attack is coming from. The catch? Unlike 99.9% of bosses, this one gets WEAKER as he takes damage; his body parts flickering into skeletons, the attacks becoming weaker and shorter, and eventually with a thunderclap; that body part shuts down completely. You can feel your attacks working; unlike most bosses who hit 0HP and just boom.

The entirety of Tyrian/Tyrian 2000 soundtrack are my definite favorite. Depending on what MIDI sound card one would use at the era where DOS computers were still (largely) a thing, they can be quite pleasant to listen to or not so much. Sound cards that support OPL such as Adlib and RDosPlay are usually the best way to go, but I've listened to some exceptional renderings via Sound Blaster AWE series and one of Roland's sound cards.

For example...

Asteroid Dance Part 2 (On Adlib/SoundBlaster/RDosPlay) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4nr0KACCJ8) (On another MIDI soundcard which I have no info about) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLfg2lSUNwQ)

NOTE: Some people typo between Asteroid Dance Part 1 and Asteroid Dance Part 2 often. These two samples are the same Asteroid Dance Part 2.

Anyway, entire soundtracks uploaded on YouTube:

Adlib/SoundBlaster/RDosPlay (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBBE0619A3F2315CB)
MIDI (Again, I have no data on what MIDI soundcard was used to record these songs. I' m sure they have better quality than your average MIDI330-based cards.) (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2E88515DACF8248E)
Spoiler warning: Contains some boss and endgame tracks. Also, a few unused tracks are featured as well.

EDIT: Added some more commentary on how  the soundtracks play on different sound cards and reworded the typo thing; My last statement is confusing. Even the official soundtrack album has it right all along.

Tyrian is one of those rare PC games with music that was actually composed for OPL rather than a Sound Canvas, so playing the music on anything sample-based is going to make it sound kinda bad.

There is another soundtrack in GS: TLA that I think many forget: Jenna's Battle Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5Ty9gV8v1g).

I never got around to finishing Chrono Trigger, but there is one theme in that game that I particularly enjoyed: Frog's Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yigc4z1gFA4).

There's a lot of Pok?mon game music that I like too. I won't list some of the more widely known themes like Battle! Lance/Red and such, because even though many of the older (Gen I & II) themes are very awesome, everybody knows them already.

RSE
Champion Steven Stone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DNfeA4LEcE). The bass in Steven's encounter theme is really badass.

DPPt has some of my favorite Pok?mon tunes:
Battle! Rival (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB4rYlDW8Nc). Pretty childish-sounding theme, but I think it's well made.
Battle! Team Galactic Admin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0CnIbKR2zI). Easily my favorite from DPPt. The buildup... the breakdown... the drums... and the aftermath... it's perfect.
Battle! Dialga/Palkia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALbsX5oXHc8).
Champion Cynthia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc0At5MXUoM). If it wasn't for the Team Galactic Admin battle theme being so good, this would be my favorite.
Battle! Champion Cynthia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEvuu73sdhc). I really like the buildup and aftermath in her theme.

Sadly, I don't have quite as many favorites when it comes to BW and BW2. But here are some:
Unwavering Emotion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzfQhV3G_MU). I tend to prefer battle or encounter themes over all other types of themes. But I can't overlook this theme.
The Equated Captives (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMs8OArC5Jc) (Encounter! N) N is so cool!  :* His encounter theme is also pretty cool. And ominous.
Battle! N (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaX_l77nfYk). His standard theme has a sense of foreboding about it. In lack of better wording. It's like noticing that your spaceship is heading toward an event horizon fast.
Decisive Battle! N (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2GeWOMgxiE). A feel of urgency. If his standard theme would describe heading toward the event horizon, this theme describes passing it.

The Pok?mon Myster Dungeon series, while not played as the traditional Pok?mon games, houses some true gems. I am thinking specifically about Explorers of Time/Darkness however, since those are the only ones I've played. I am only going to list three closely related pieces however.
Don't ever forget... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oMi9H74pjE). This is what truly starts the emotional roller-coaster, the ending of the main story.
Have to get home... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLkuZgaprlE). Your poor partner is probably still in shock from what just happened.
Farther away... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0omKkZPpPxc). Your partner is on the rainbow stoneship. Reality hits like a freight train, your partner is starting to process the recent events.

Mega Man: The Power Battle - Cut Man / Magnet Man theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDKqdtBoXg4) (originally Shadow Man theme)

Mega Man: The Power Battle - Wily's Castle midboss theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM5M2Joyi1g) (original, actually, but still, became Yellow Devil's theme)

Has anyone ever mentioned Kirby OST? (old games not the wannabe new ones ((but triple deluxe wasn't so bad))) That's probably the only game that I'd choose it's soundtrack over touhou.
I just find every song catchy and genius.
In fact, Kirby games are the only games that I would actually go to the menu screen and go to music to listen to the soundtrack.

In fact, a song in Kirby 64 actually made me cry as a kid.
Kirby had best composer/composers.

I'm glad to see so many games that i played here, especially Chrono Cross, Trigger, Ace Combat, Golden Sun and FE.
However i'm kinda sad no one said anything about Advance Wars here, the themes of the COs are great IMO, my favorites ones being Max, Colin, Jess, Drake (Not to be confused with our Drake), Kanbei and Sensei's.

(Loading........... please wait)

I am able to add this right now however.
Chrono Cross - People imprisoned by Destiny (https://youtu.be/VDbfOdvFBrA)
In every playthrough i did, when i heard this, the feels would strike hard.

Undertale music where

It's been a while since I've played or listened to it, but just off the top of my head...
Undertale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBhFHJMVfiI) aka the music that plays while you walk down that last corridor with all the exposition
Asgore's theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfgmMPke7_k)
And one of the biggest ear worm of all, Death by Glamour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHL_Bk60F_4). The space jam mix is unfairly catchy.
And speaking of songs that have catchy space jam mixes, *cough*afgr (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oqf36ReTrDU)*cough*, and though I've only played the demo from back before the full game was released, Parity (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tEcG9qpgUg), Rin's theme from Katawa Shoujo. The demo version of which reminded me a lot of the break the targets theme from melee.

Someone mentioned earlier Crash Wrath of Cortex (more specifically the song Atmospheric Pressure) and while that's one of my favourite songs from the soundtrack you cannot forget the greatness that is Wizards and Lizards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkC64SnDX_E)

Tacking onto the above poster (who has great vgm taste by the way) :
Crypt of the Necrodancer - Konga Conga Kappa (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUAq7-YpO0w)
Crypt of the Necrodancer - Portabellohead (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2Cm2WFGCYY) <best song in the game imo
VVVVVV - Pushing Onwards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25m3Gk7mRQM)

But I cannot believe that nobody has mentioned Okami yet. Quite possibly my favourite ost hands down. So many beautiful songs to pick from but I have to narrow it down to a few.
Okami - Inside the Water Dragon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrjdDQj_oQU)
Okami - Shinshu Plains (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yKG-Qu4WvM)

Ooooh, I just found this thread. Any thread were we share what we think is great video game music is a great idea.  :V

Has anybody mentioned the HuniePop OST by World of Wandag? Botanical Gardens is a particular favorite of mine:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_fklrtR75I&list=PLgBxvGmLkLMxgLTffuaJApkPTEQiERc_J&index=10

Another artist that deserves particular mention is Cyber Rainforce. He/she is a self proclaimed independent music composer living in Japan who composes many musics (MP3, Ogg, and SMF) for video games. I have heard many of his/her works in various doujin games and they all rock. A particular favorite of mine is Factory Invasion (Inside Mix) which really gets the blood pumping for an epic battle. You can find a video of all of his/her works here:

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of music from the Kirby games.  :P

Here are some of my favorite songs and such.

Miracle Matter's theme:

Galacta Knight's theme:  :dragonforce:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy2Xwrs-tNc

Desert Area theme in Planet Robobot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ6zBuRlK8M

Zero Two's theme:

Many more songs as well, but I don't want to make the biggest post ever.  :V

Ooh, I'm quite pleased to see UNATCO and Roller Mobster already mentioned here. Excellent! I'm probably over-contributing here, but I wanted to get a good collection up.

Sonic Spinball - Toxic Caves (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkWUJfIotfU) - Spinball's darker, and honestly, overall creepier style brought with it some heavy grunge to the musical stylings of the Sonic games. My family has many fond memories of this one.
Sonic R - Back In Time (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAeBXh25NiQ) - This one is especially fitting when looking back on this nostalgically, or playing it as escapism nowadays... I gotta say, when it came in out of nowhere for the first time in Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KchLs6cI20g), I nearly cried.

Daytona USA - The King of Speed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmv4cLKyML8) - Obligatory.
Daytona USA - Sky High (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZezhE3lKxo) - Also.
Daytona USA 2: Battle on the Edge - I Can Do It (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbgD7VTM-MY) - Not as obligatory, but a fine track. Comes in classic flavor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALxOT_D3Liw), too.

L.A. Noire - driving music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXVCd3BD-nM) - I used to keep this on my phone and listen to it on my commute. Really nails the feeling of having your work cut out for you, chasing the next lead.

GRID - Vintage Warmer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhNRweaZEkY) - Gosh, this super-soothing main menu music is much of what made this game such a genuinely pleasant experience. It made the garage feel like home. I booted up the game just to listen to this sometimes.
GRID 2 - Eliminator (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0OLCPJ-7a4) - On the less relaxing side, the contested sequel to GRID brought an elimination mode with 20-second timers between each elimination, and the music was perfectly timed to fit it. One of my only complaints with Autosport is replacing this with a tamer, electronic variant.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005) - The Heat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPQXvjAdnX8) - There's many variations on the game's police pursuit music, but an absolutely stellar assortment of bits and pieces lead to a dynamic soundtrack I still have yet to see rivaled in action.
Tomb Raider: Legend - Peru Bike Ride (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mawqqPnUJyU) - This high-octane mix of the game's main theme accompanies one of the most ridiculously fun moments of the game... once you get the motorbike controls figured out. It'd be more apt to say it makes the first eight times you drive face-first into a rock tolerable.
Tomb Raider: Legend - Kazakhstan Train Chase (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQMkyX8187k) - Another Ducati ride, another awesome anthem for it.

Deus Ex - Main Theme (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1oxIrAX39M) - It's hard not to keep humming or whistling this one. I can't blame that guy in Detroit during Human Revolution.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Secunda (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvsMn05WtaI) - A gorgeous, peaceful tune that mostly tells me it's time to go to bed.
Animal Crossing - Nook's Cranny (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnmxhE9usbI) - Feel free to browse, but try not to carouse! Ho ho ho! (I'm angling to staff someone's Artist's Alley booth again expressly so I can play this on my phone while I do so.)
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Stealthy Bat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfgIusSGLPU) - It's easy to forget that the original Arkham Asylum was more along the lines of survival horror in tone. It's not easy to forget that while you're playing it, though. For reference's sake, this is what the music sounds like when you do have the upper hand.

PAYDAY: The Heist - See You at the Safe House (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hESqsryOiZM) - Being the 'level clear' theme, this is usually accompanied with a huge sigh of relief and congratulations among teammates.

PAYDAY 2 - Armed to the Teeth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8EUBMp8Aqw) - No other song in this game so perfectly encapsulates the feeling that you're playing the bad guys.
PAYDAY 2 - Evil Eye (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIf7sIQ73ok) - Simon Viklund always puts out amazing work, and this is no exception. This is for the Hotline Miami heist, and as such, takes a great deal of influence from the game it's named and themed after. Nowadays, I've played this level so many times that the majority of my difficulty with it comes from trying to see where I'm going while headbanging.
PAYDAY 2 - Ode All'Avidita (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTHqz6JsfCc) - Yes, for the Big Bank trailer, Viklund went ahead and composed an opera...
PAYDAY 2 - Ode to Greed (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul0YbD1AIeE) - ...expressly to use a remixed version of it for the level proper. I think deserves a slot if only for Holy Shizz Quotient alone.
PAYDAY 2 - Fully Loaded Epic Win (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3A5NcsV1Lks) - This is one of the few tracks in the game not composed by Viklund, with Le Castle Vania instead taking the helm. I'd say it gives me a John Wick vibe and that's a very good thing, but it's to be expected since he was on that soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pv0u7uMn-g) as well.

PAYDAY: The Heist - Gun Metal Grey (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib19evMJJVI) - It's easy to hit a 'first level wins' mentality when it comes to memorable music and scenery, but First World Bank is generally the starter level in the first Payday, and this drum-heavy track with a little inspiration from Heat serves it quite well.
PAYDAY 2 - Gun Metal Grey 2015 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AbAKDjZ8CA) - Between the remixed music and the return of a classic level remixed for newer gameplay, the initial release of First World Bank for PD2 reminded me a good deal of Sonic Generations. It's pretty impressive hearing a classic leitmotif come roaring back in a series that only did it exactly once before. (Unless you count I Will Give You My All being snuck into the background constantly.)

Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus - Super Duper Masochism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKhobp4gTBM) - Inherent humor of the title aside, it's very tricky to nail the niche of "ballerina hardcore-masochist shinobi with dual-pistols", and somehow this character theme for Ryona fits her just right. It's inherently badass, and makes clear the other end of the deal; either you give her a sound thrashing this very second or you're not gonna like what happens.

Jet Set Radio Future - The Concept of Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V4IEV8l-gA) - This should have been here already.

Daytona USA - G-A-M-E O-V-E-R (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esx6kqauC9A) - And you thought only Sega Rally was so happy about it.

Music to eat sheep to (https://youtu.be/WiMky9D1bog)

The above comes from Sheep Dog'n'Wolf, also known as Sheep Raider, a largely forgotten but absolutely brilliant 3D puzzle platformer featuring a Coyote look-alike, his "friend" the guard dog we're supposed to outsmart, and sheep, sheep, sheep. Guest appearance by the one and only Daffy Duck. Just listen to the above, then remember the music isn't even the best part of the game.

I guess I'll post some of my personal favs. Though I am a bit late to the party, as it seems. I'll try my best not to cause a wall of text, lol.

I simply love Maplestory's soundtrack. So many blissful memories.
