Title: MAGFest 13 - RIP students
Post by: Gpop on October 24, 2014, 01:33:17 PM
http://magfest.org/ (RIP students, dat date)

So who's going to the upcoming MAGfest? I might be going again if my work allows it (which will most likely let me), but I'm wondering who else is going.

Last year was my first time going and I had a blast, mostly because of the vast amount of rhythm games they had there that I stuck around for most of it with the FFR crew. I mean I'd recommend trying them out, especially Sound Voltex because of the vast amount of Touhou arranges in that game.

I remember meeting a couple people from here. I found it funny how last year everyone thought I was the Koishi cosplayer but I was just a dude in regular clothes :V Hopefully will know this time since I'll still be in regular clothes again. And I'll most likely be around the rhythm games again, as well as adding my stepmania touhou/vocaloid packs into the ITG2 machines.

But yeah, who's going?

I've already confirmed my ticket and whatnot, and was a bit bitter about missing last year (though I went the year before, and it was indeed an absolute blast). See you all there!

If I do only one con in a year, it's this one.  I really ought to buy my ticket, speaking of.

Not sure who I'll be with this time since my usual companions' lives are a little all over the place, but I will be there SOMEHOW.

I am going to be ~that guy~ at the con playing sets in the hallways with my sister + other assorted folk at points, already started practicing some of the tunez
Mother/Earthbound medley aaaaa

Rad, I've been playing a lot of SDVX at my friend's house but still don't have the cash I need for my own.  If there's a PJD AC cab I'll probably just die and then my ghost will play it all weekend

Well, it wasn't an AC version, but last year they DID have the PS3 version going with one of the fancy PJD controllers, so who knows?

Are people doing OK for rooms? While I can't promise anything, the #conmeido brigade and associated parties may have a surplus. Everything is taken at the Gaylord, so it'll come down to local hotels (luckily there's a bunch) if need be.

As someone who's not a metalhead, is there a musical guest I should be excited about? All the guests so far seem to be geared towards the headbanging crowd.

The vast majority of the music is video game-related, so you're going to see a lot of chiptunes, orchestral covers, etc.  There is something for everyone.

My boy Kommisar will most likely be doing a set in Chipspace once again, or at least he'll do something during open mic. You can even request him to do some of his Touhou arranges as well if you guys want during the open mic :V

Triforce (string) Quartet is coming back and they were phenomenal.  My personal favorite group from last year was a jazz band but I don't know their status yet.  They have 2 stages for concerts going simultaneously in addition to the equivalent of open mic karaoke for bands/groups (this was really out of the way though) and a small DJ/chiptunes/etc space.

Ah, I saw pics of yours once.  It was a Rin/Len themed one, yes?

Staying on topic-ish:  I do hope they have the AC version since I never did get around to playing it when I was in Japan earlier this year.

I wonder if I'll actually go to more than like one panel or if I'll basically live in the videogame room/dealers' room/artists' alley again like at almot every con ever for me.  (Of course at MAGFest I also go to concerts, but that's a given since it's MAGFest, right?)

Nah, I bought the official HORI one, so it's just a generic Miku theme.  I'd love to have built my own, but with the introduction of star notes (those bastards), I'm glad I didn't.

Yeah, I still really want to play Future Tone.  I know it didn't add that much to gameplay, but dammit it's different!

For anyone who may have been interested, the Touhou Project panel was not accepted. We had full confidence that the actual application was the best we could swing, but I wager that since we'd be new there, the panel is long, we'd need a primo timeslot to make sure all of the panelists were available, etc., it wasn't accepted.

Also a couple of friends won't be bringing their full array of rigs with every last mutually shared legal copy of Touhou and miscellaneous other games we could stuff in them. Instead, this year is being used to size up MAGFest since it's a straight-up gaming and music con and they'd like to see how things operate so they can fit in next year.

Else get hype. My Lon'qu from Pennsylvania outfit is almost done and I can't wait to see y'all anyway.

I need to try not to be too awkward to say hi to any MotKers who I come across along the way though as well, ehe.

ALSO did everyone register already?  My crew wanted to add a few people to our group registration but you have to add at least 5 at a time and I'm not sure we're going to hit that and the price goes up on Wednesday.  I didn't want to deal with herding a zillion cats but we might need to wrangle up some people mighty fast.

Were you the one who missed nearly everyone at AWA '13? Seriously I forget it's been awhile.

In general, the group is pretty mellow and no one will bite your head off. We also have the tendency of simply recruiting stray people for no other reason other than because we can, so you might fit in perfectly without even trying. This only gets troublesome when we bring 60 people to Edo Sushi at Otakon.
my sister: "I hope it's better than my actual prom"
me: "well if it sucks you can leave and go play Mario Kart or something so yes"
This was like everyone's prom. It can also be extrapolated to some people's entire high school experience. :[

Yo, HS sucked but my prom fucking ruled.  I went with an older girl, everyone actually treated each other respectfully and like equals, the food was meh, but I fucking dominated the dance floor when they played Livin' La Vida Loca.

True story: we were on our way out, then they played the song.  I took off my tuxedo jacket, tossed it to an unsuspecting gym teacher/coach/chaperone, said "Hey Droz, hold this for a minute!" and dragged my date back in for the song.

It owned so hard

But 80s prom is gonna own hard too, I'm torn between a Miami Vice look or one of the getups Robert Downey, Jr. wore in Back to School.

It's just something I'll have to work on I suppose~! One of my goals for the new year, at any rate.

Number six there gets an automatic Rocket Punch.
It's not so much a gripe as it is a general warning to potential hotel captains that there's a lot of different ways things could go for something as simple as payment. Luckily everything's now settled for the large group and there's no more teeth pulling to be done until it's con time. Also number 6 did happen once and now we don't take reservations unless a person deliberately steps forth and announces their intent.

It sounds like we (the #conmeido-=#touhou joint room bloc that is) should have this under control in time for convention and can safely manage and track payments. Aside from 'wait until further notice' I haven't received a whole lot of info regarding this, admittedly.

36 over 6 rooms of which I'm handling 3.

This is partially due to the fact that the room population went from 31 to the cap of 36 people in the last week. That's a $20 dollar difference per person, and we'd have to refund anyone and everyone who paid before that. With the population situation done, I think we're figuring through payment methods and who they're going to next since this means figuring out where the money is going to instead of how much.  With 6 rooms, 4 nights, a 16% tax, and a nightly resort fee per room, this is coming to more than $4k, so it has now become important to figure things through before someone winds up flushing a sizable amount of money down the toilet.

BLEH. In short, please be patient with us as we are figuring things out. Thanks for your concern and not scrooging us because a couple people have, be it by accident or not. We'll have the information up as soon as things are settled.

Exchanging numbers with some of us is a good idea if you can manage to get a US SIM card working or with a prepaid phone. IRC and Steam mobile are alternatives, but I would not count on the convention attendees being online that often during the convention. :V

This is par for the course for a lot of anime cons. Soooorta glad that this is something different. Still, most of us can't turn that kind of con mode off, and as such, I expect like half the group to still be decked out in 2hu outfits, so we'll stand out that way.
Got it, thanks for the detailed explanation.
We have a lot of potentially useful information at the ready, but one big detail hasn't come in yet. It may be settled as early as tonight, but I won't be able to have a few people around to figure out the details until tonight and only have a brief window open there.

We were disappointed last year :(

And Red damn I only have 2 rooms/9 people to wrangle, I don't envy having to handle our bunch of jokers.

Speaking of jokers guess who is still adding new music to learn to :toot: less than 3 weeks before the con?

(Hint it is me)
( I am that joker)
So that's one way to find me if you ever see in the hallway two girls who look kinda the same doing flute/clarinet duets of pretty much exclusively pre 2001 JRPG tunes (and one session maybe with an alto sax as a 3rd)  I had to put two FF6 songs in there to insure MJP shows up whoops.

Once the schedule hits we'll figure out ours.

(Unless they run out of chicken.  Then you will be disappointed.)
As someone who went to MAGfest for the first time last year and went to Nando's the very first day for dinner, I can assure you that Edible is correct.

Town and Celes, same stuff as last year cause we barely have to practice them hahaha.  The roughest stuff we have is Florem, Mother/Earthbound medley,  and today my sister unearthed Chrono Trigger end festival which welp my part is kinda ridiculous. Really a lot of the stuff isn't hard, I still have one or two easy things I might steal from piano sheets/a midi but we wanted a lot more to play than last year and multiple sets.

Sax player is from our local gamer orchestra.  We won't get to practice together until next week but we've gotten To Zanarkand and Hyrule Castle for trio written out which I'm psyched for.

Magfest is especially great because it attracts so many different circles of friends IRL and online.

Hooray music the 80s dance we've been craving to go to since we were 16!

If anyone's trying to find our peoples, just look for me - I'll be running around the con in a long olive drab Italian Army alpine parka and ushanka, spamming the announcement sound from Papers, Please and stamping temporary visa slips that deny people entrance to MAGfest.

SO HYPE FOR THIS CONVENTION

We thought about it but transporting it down is the issue, we're filing all 7 of the seats in a minivan.

Still bangin' out room arrangements and payment info. I think this is a heavy case of too many cooks spoil the soup since we've got a few people trying to arrange things for 40 people but if we just split things up a bit this would all have been done weeks ago.
Oh my god

Shipping and handling has been the death of many a great costume idea. Make it built to stand the test of time and it'll be too big and cumbersome. Build it to fit and it'll fall apart when someone so much as shifts their weight.

Yeah folding and then unfolding cardboard isn't going to look so good.  We were able to hide the fold seam on Chiyo's Dad with the felt.  I mean I'm sure there's a way to craft it in a way to assemble it on site buuuuut I ain't cosplaying at this con I am not taking on any more things to worry about other than my groups' registration woes (we got someone who got a panelist badge and who's coming/not coming now and ahhhh) and working on my music because hahahaha.

Allow me to state the reasons why this is going to be an awesome Papers, Please costume despite lack of border booth:

1) custom soundboard app on my phone with the announcement noise and "papers" being the sole buttons

2) borrowing a small portable speaker to enable spamming announcement noise

3) this stamp
(http://i.imgur.com/j5OJ22A.png)

4) this badge (it's getting painted tonight) to be pinned to an ushanka

5) these things that I'm printing in droves

Schedule is up. (https://prime.uber.magfest.org/m13/schedule/)

I got all of the room stuff in order on the same day that I finished my most recent costume. I also got a hefty shrug of indifference from the one person who could've thrown a fit about all of the organizational stuff I half-railroaded that needed to happen sooner or later. Yesterday for con prep couldn't have gone better or been more successful!

EDIT: Some great stuff here but the prom STARTS at 11:30 pm on Friday. Well gramps doesn't need to be depressed AND tired, so you can forget that, thanks very much. >:(

Double Edit: 8 people out of 40 have flaked out over the last week now. I now realize that so few people volunteer for this job because no one likes it.

That is some really pesty schedule layout, I need to wait for a pdf or Guidebook to really get planning.  And that has to be incomplete since they have basically nothing on Monday (which I guess is the normal con-Sunday?)  Gotta plan when we're going to do our not-really-a-concert things  :V

Not having two concert rooms might mean the open band jam room is the smaller concert room from last year which would be fantastic, as the few times I wandered there it felt like I was trekking through some sort of murder alley and no one was in there but the staffers.
Title: Re: MAGFest 13 - RIP students
Post by: Reddyne on January 13, 2015, 06:17:00 PM
By the way, how do the concerts work out? There's like big blobs of music just slam-jammed together where one band's on for 40 minutes and then the next group is up. Does the stage just fly off into space while the next band layer waits below on a backup stage below or what? Can I jump into the concert room at the last moment to see Bit Brigade thrash it to a Mario 2 speedrun or do I have to hang around until they show up onstage?

I've never seen anyone at magfest do a roomclear or anything.  I've had a friend pretty much just camp in one room all day listening to various bands.  People walk in and out at all times, so you can't be too early or too late.

Looks like there's some good panels. Sega Does What Nintendon't and Cho Kusoge on Friday. Saturday Morning Cartoons, Obscure Game Gems, and Unintentional Humor in Games on Saturday. Extra Credits (for EC dorks) on Sunday.

BTW what's the game room like here? Anything particularly engaging for game cabinets?

Imagine otakon's game room.  Remove several of the huge displays and replace each one with additional miscellaneous consoles.  Now add an entire extra room filled with nothing but arcade cabinets.

And that is magfest's game room.

Yeah it's moreso them expanding from more than just rhythm games rather than converting/replacing, so don't worry, the DDR/ITG2 machines should still be there (and my Touhou/Vocaloid Pad Packs will be on the ITG2 machines as well :V)

Thaaaank yoooou. I figure I'll consider the Super Soul Brothers, Kirby's Dream Band, Bit Brigade, and Descendants of Erdrick as well. There are many of us out there who long ago lost interest in the kind of death metal scream that would kick up waves on the Potomac but still aren't 100% sold on the kind of things that Grandpa would play if he were dj'ing for NPR after downing some valium with his sleepy time tea while in an optometrist's waiting room.

Room arrangements finally finalized and nearly everyone has paid with the exception of two people who would prefer to pay in cash munny at the con which is perfectly fine. Everything's been hammered out and other (reliable) people will largely be getting others into their rooms. All it took to get it done was the IRON FIST of a BRUTAL DICTATORSHIP. Nearly everything's packed and what isn't is simply in bags next to my luggage. All the costumes were checked to ensure all their parts were there and the props have a fresh coat of paint. MP3 player got a 2 gig update for the ride there and back plus there's two previous issues of Pop Sci that have been waiting for the opportunity to be read. Travel begins early tomorrow morning and our driving buddy has mapped out the route.

Errrrrgh everything's so cloooooose.

Yes plox and I will need a the frame. I can get the new number later or whatevs because a group dinner with friends would be great here.

Also the view from this room is fantastic and the epinephrine is thinning out. I may write and/or say a cohesive sentence today.

Goooood morniiiiing~!

Absolutely no idea what's gonna go on myself other than the Protomen later.  Gotta raid the dealers' room, I know that much.  Though there isnt as much there that I'd want as previous years.  Oh well, save money I suppose.

Will probably find myself hanging out in the arcade or something a lot most of the day like usual unless me and my other friends who I'm rooming with find stuff we all wanna do before the evening.

PLAGUE RATS PLAGUE RATS GIANT SNOWSTORM SCRAMBLE TORA TORA TORA.

Our plans have shifted dramatically because of an apparent approaching wall of doom. We're at Aniki's with nothing but packing left to do and even that's alost done. We will be ready to go at about 5 tomorrow morning.

And with a foot and a half of snow in our future we'll be heading out shortly.

Lots of fun! Except I have most certainly been hit with con plague, my voice sounds like I've been chain smoking for 40 years and all I want to do is sleep until Wednesday.

But hot damn do I love this con.

We're about to check out of our room so once they grab our luggage to hold onto I'll be at the arcade and see what rhythm games they haven't brought in yet, so if you want a final chance to find me, this would be the best time. I'm wearing a white sweater with some navy blue and red outline. I'm the latino with black hair :V

id say MAGFest went mostly well...until today when my flight arrived half an hour late and the bus I was to take was not in fct connected to the airport so now I get to be stuck in the bus terminal in Buffalo(went anyway to see if I could find another time to get where I wanted) til someone can collect me or something.

Joy of joys, lemme tell ya.

Oof that's rough :(  How far away from home are you?
I am now sitting on my couch under a blanket and that's how it's going to stay until  ??? ??? ???

So much fun I love you guys let's do this again next year but with less snowpocalypse on the way Y/Y?

Crisis averted, got money sent over to me thanks to Western Union so I can take the bus to Olean(a town only like 20mins away from home) and get picked up there.

Buffalo is like 2, 2.5 hours of driving, I believe.

How many good things happened at MAGFest? How many good things will come about because of this MAGFest?

Ya travel plans require some strength, finesse, and too much luck. You got a short straw for certain.

Reality needs hold off a bit please. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5_cP0MGhhk)

Back up in your ass with the resurrection
It's the group harder than an erection
That shows more affection
They wanna ban us on Capital Hill
Cause its die muthafuckas, die muthafuckas still (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm0HdQD3yTk)

Or for the unimaginative: http://youtubedoubler.com/?video1=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DGm0HdQD3yTk&start1=&video2=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DeF8c3BjFWsw&start2=&authorName=MJP

MAGfest did not nearly have enough table flipping, Artemis and Starship Horizons to satisfy me.  I spent a lot of time just walking around and stuff, didn't really go into any concerts, and I probably won't be back next year but it was still enjoyably spent.

Big ups to all the people I finally put names to faces to.

Home safe and back at work.  Heading south means we missed all winter weather lolol

Good things:

Bad things:

This was my first MAGFest and in all likelihood will also be my last.  None of the panels interested me, I didn't care for nearly all the music/artists at the con, and I'm really not a gamer.  It was cool to meet internet people but I could see them all at different anime cons.  Of course, none of this is set in stone.

Good things:
  • Barcardi Gold
  • Neon FM (surprisingly enjoyable[finally got to play Girlz Buttz{*clap*}])
  • Seeing cool internet people
  • Long overdue conversations with cool internet people

Bad things:
  • Gosling's Black Seal 151 fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
  • Lack of inexpensive places to eat in walking distance
  • Gaylord not having their shit together wrt paying for parking on Monday early afternoon
  • Honestly, MAGFest in general

:( :( :( :(

I wound up a fan of 3 bands I never expected to like, willfully damaged my hearing for MAXIMUM ROCK EXPERIENCE, played through probably 10 arcade games with both close friends and total strangers, went out for meals with a group of 6 or greater no less than 5 times, socialized with old acquaintances and brand new friends, drank some lolita, viewed some crazy indie games, got some plaudits for successfully managing the room situation, was awarded some props to my trapping skills for the first time ever, had my picture taken in costume with everyone from hardcore Touhou nerds to a pair of Muslim ladies with a kid in tow, got some awesome stuff that I always wanted, and came away with and something that'll net me a karma point from a friend, and got 600 streetpasses. :V. Hell, I even had a very normal non-threatening moment with someone I typically avoid for good reason. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was the funk emanating from the suite across the hall.

In your case, however, it's too bad that it didn't work out. But if it just wasn't your pace, no point in trying to make things fit.

Welcome to National Harbour! The problem repeats itself in Katsu too. :\

Aww. :( Well Mag has quite the different focus from most anim? cons, so it's definitely an understandable opinion.

Hm..anyways, let's see here....

Awesome things:
Perhaps this could be better....

Pros:
-Finally got to hang out with someone who me and my group-of-friends-who-go-to-MAGFest wated to meet in person for the past few years
-Meeting some of you MotKers properly, even if just for a bit
-Concerts, my favorites being the Powerglove and Protomen ones, though in the end all the ones I went to were really good to me.

Cons:
-Needing to work on social ability still
-Forgetting to eat until only the expensive places are open
-NOT BEING IN THE GAYLORD oh man this was such a pain for so many reasons.  Pretty much right after they have MAGFest 14's dates lined up we're gonna be reserving.  Not EVEN gonna deal with that crap again.  (Although to be fair the Red Roof Inn's room was pretty good for being so cheap.)
-Transportation woes upon trying to get back home

All in all, a satisfying experience.  Definitely liked being a Supporter, too; if I can I will probably keep doing so, or at least every other year or something.

Had some extra photos to share even if I'm not a shutterbug:

Nice pretty view of the ferris wheel from the hotel room~

I put somewhere on the order of a few hundred hours into this game over the years and never managed to find an official copy until now. Never really had any means of getting my hands on one. The vindication is so sweet. Yes, the instruction booklet is wonderfully detailed and reeks like musty 20 year old paper that was sealed away from the start.

The end of the Bit Brigade concert...

And the rest of the crowd. The place is as big as a football field and I can't really tell how far back the crowd goes.

Best con experience I've had in a long time. See you guys next year.

hi5 BEST CON BUDDY

It went Hella Back, I am told they hit whatever they deemed capacity and had to implement one in, one out.
BUT SO GOOD AHHHHHH
(just loud)

They're putting up a survey for potential dates for next year, one of them being the weekend after Katsucon welp if that happens I know which I'm picking!

It went Hella Back,
I am confused and angered by this unit of measurement. Still, the fact that the room of that size that open with that high a ceiling with that many doors was deemed one person shy of a fire hazard is a feat unto itself.

Voted for January 7th-10th next year since so many people had to keep away for schooling this year. Also MAGFest + Katsu back to back will be too rough on some people. ALSO it's super easy for me to get PTO the week after the Christmas and New Year's rush for gobs of time off has ended.

I don't recall them counting as people were going in, so I'm assuming at a certain point they were using the same precise metric measurement of "Hella" that I was.

Helloooo all, I was at Magfest!! You may have seen me playing flute in the halls with Triangles or generally loitering around. I had a super time!  :D

Yeah I left Bit Brigade because I have sensitive snowflake ears and they were waiting for people to leave before letting more in.. hella seems accurate to a point, but they were definitely implementing "one in, one out" by then.
