Title: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get writing!

Last year's thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,7476.0.html)

Currently, there are 24 days left 'till NaNoWriMo begins. (Again, as last year, if you want to post your story in PSL, just put [NaNoWriMo] in the subject for ease of organizing.) But I'd like to mention it slightly earlier than the announcement last year, mostly because of this little snippet in the novel-writing guidelines on the official website:
Quote
Outlines and plot notes are very much encouraged, and can be started months ahead of the actual novel-writing adventure.
So: ladies, gentlemen, fairies, start your outlines!

Who's in this year? I am totally going to give this a second try. :dragonforce:

I'm actually thinking of entering this year even though I haven't done so previously. I have some ideas, it's just a matter of compiling them together into a cohesive narrative.

Well, I failed miserably last year and all, but, um, hmmm...

Oh screw it here goes nothing!  Allons-y~! >.<  I am totally just going to be making this up as I go along and it will be a trainwreck, but who cares!?  I can at least try to get further than last time before burning out!

But yeah no way I'll have time for this. At most I'll have like a week that isn't totally packed with school work in November and I don't really have any story ideas at the moment anyways so good luck to those are particiapting. BV

I'll definitely be doing this. Haven't written a damned thing for TGWWtB since NDK, I really need to get back to work on that. And no, I won't expect you to proofread it. I'll do that myself this time, you'll be plenty busy with your own. (Is addressing Ruro)

...Or I could write something entirely new and be all "Pfft what's The Girl Who Walks the Border? :derp:"

Last's year experience tells me that wiritng 50k words would be an extremely difficult adventure...

But still going to do it anyway.

Considering seriously this time. I've had this one nagging story in the back of my head for over a year. Might be a good excuse to try and get it out into something concrete.

There is also the fact I'd be endangering the lives of potentially millions by even daring to write something so maybe that's not a good idea.

Toss up.

My last attempt resulted in a shit-ton of frustration and rushing which produced less than stellar results. I have an idea of what I want to do this time (especially since I spent nearly a year creating and mapping out an original universe to use for future projects), but I'm not entirely sure I want to even try it again with how much stress the last one put me through.

Oh yeah, we should exchange our profile links as we did last year so we can add everyone as writing buddies :3
Here, have some fish. (http://www.nanowrimo.org/de/user/701239)

Also, I think it would be cool to hear what everyone that considers participating has in mind for their stories.
I'm going for a continuation of the story I started last year, since I conveniently dropped it right at a point where the story changed to another group of characters, thus  I can easily pick it up again right there.

I have a feeling I'm way too hyped for something that is essentially a month of self-torture \o/

gdi, what's with the hype so early?

Argh... do I want to subject myself to this again? I had to sneak in writing time at work and it'll be harder to do this year. But I guess I should actually finish OLG at least.

The instant I commit, my November is going to be hell...

Actually, what I wrote last year seems more like a Journal rather than a story. 50k words demand a good story idea.

An idea for those that feel full NaNo might be too much but that are still tempted to take part: Just set your personal goal :3

I myself got reminded that I actually have a research report to do during November, which will be quite a bit of work that will not mix well with NaNo-commitment. So I've simply decided to go for a half-NaNo at least (ya know, like how there are half-marathons ;) ) and aim for 25k during the month, since I don't wanna miss the whole fun entirely.

I'll be honest right now. I don't expect to hit the 50,000 mark. I'm mostly doing this challenge because I have ideas I need to get out of my head and into text and if I run out of idea before I hit the target then oh well

NaNoWriMo relaunched their site, so you have to renew some settings when you log in again. Some functions are also disabled for now, most notably Writing Buddies, but that will come back in the next few days.

You can also get some fun little badges (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/webbadges) to put in your sig or other places to show your participation in NaNo~

I might give participating another shot this year with a particular super robot story I've had laying around for many years. I tried starting on it once, but I couldn't get myself into the mindset of "just write, dammit".

Some of these look pretty neat.

Okay, who's started on their outlines? I had an informal one in my head last year, but it's something quite different to write it down while consciously avoiding writing down the story itself.
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: Dead Princess Sakana on October 13, 2011, 06:56:03 PM
I might get around to writing an outline next week, still got uni stuff to do. It's probably best to start as soon as possible so I can write down every idea I have at random times, and possibly have a nice amount of material to work with come November.
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: DarkslimeZ on October 13, 2011, 06:59:24 PM
Imma start a basic outline tomorrow once I grab that big text file from home where all my ideas for the story are sitting. Won't be anything major though, just where I want to start/finish each chapter at... probably. maybe I should write one chapter per day or something, that could be neat

I was also in the middle of actually drawing the main character's mech but I keep forgetting to ask cousins/sister how the fuck to color something in and have it look good in SAI

...Gaaah I'm probably going to end up going into this unprepared again.   And I know just how well that worked last time... >.<
This is exactly why I made this thread as early as I did. Outlining, even informally, is the only reason I could have come close to the 50k mark last year, much less win it. And when my outline ran out, my story went to hell. I'd like to avoid that this year, to say the least.
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: Bardiche on October 13, 2011, 07:25:10 PM
Well, some people work excellently by simply winging it. Problems with outlines are that you don't always end up maintaining the same idea throughout the month, and then you obsess over sticking to your holy outline.

Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: Alfred F. Jones on October 13, 2011, 07:26:58 PM
The best outlines offer enough room to be flexible. They should just be guidelines, in the best sense.
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: Dead Princess Sakana on October 13, 2011, 07:28:36 PM
Usually it ends up being less a real outline for me and more of a collection of random ideas I want to put in the story. Those sometimes combine to form bits of continuous story or things that will lead to one another, other times they just end up being put in when they seem to fit while writing without a plan :V
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: DarkslimeZ on October 13, 2011, 07:42:09 PM
Forget outlines, I can already see that this novel is going to have a few chapters purely detailing technical specs / historical information... But I like writing those too, so it won't be a hassle. It will probably mean the story won't finish by the end though lol

What qualifies as brand new?
From the rules section:

Quote
Do I have to start my novel from scratch on November 1?

Yes.

This sounds like a dumb, arbitrary rule, we know. But bringing a half-finished manuscript into NaNoWriMo all but guarantees a miserable month. You'll care about the characters and story too much to write with the gleeful, anything-goes approach that makes NaNoWriMo such a creative rush. Give yourself the gift of a clean slate, and you'll tap into realms of imagination and intuition that are out-of-reach when working on pre-existing manuscripts.

Outlines and plot notes are very much encouraged, and can be started months ahead of the actual novel-writing adventure. Previously written prose, though, is punishable by death.

Something I've been wondering about.  Do we put anything in the novel excerpt box now?  Cause we shouldn't have anything to go in there right?  I'm either over or underthing that box.

As to your question, you can do whatever in blazes you want with it. Looks like Anathe has a small snippet from Thanatophobia, while I have... well. (http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/sakurarurouni/novels/radial-keratotomy) (the genre is just for laughs)

Out of curiousity, have people figured out names for their stories yet, or will that come later? The name took me a few days to figure out, but it feels kind of weird to have one already.

I usually love to make outlines and charts and graphs and what-have-you, but I don't try to think of story ideas. They just come to me at times. This is only a problem when they happen to not come to me, and I need them to come to me. Like right now. :V

Yeah, the thing is, I get ideas all the time, but not a lot of them are Touhou related or in good taste (like my idea about a man who assassinates a president because he thinks that he's a great president and wants to immortalize him in History. Would be interesting to write, but would also probably catch the eye of the Secret Services or something. And wouldn't be in good taste anyway.)

Write it up and send the plot to the screenwriters of The West Wing! Or another such show.

I would at least write down the blurb. One of the only guides to writing I've ever liked was one that focused less on technical things and instead just threw ideas at you to get the creative juices flowing, and keeping a notebook with daily writing prompt responses was a recommended thing to do. Keep that up long enough, and you'll probably end up writing dozens of blurbs that "aren't in good taste".

Like they would take a fifteen-year-old's idea :V

Hm. I may have to try that. Even if I do hate writing by hand (I have pretty much no arm stamina at all, even with Taekwondo going on) it may pay off. Of course, I've had random story ideas before, but they usually end up being kind of long and I just give up/forget about them.

Besides, whoever said something had to be in good taste to be good?  >.>

I'm more worried about the fact that a story about assassinating the president (not the current one for the record, just a nameless president) would be in really poor taste and also may be taken as a threat to the president which is a class D felony. So yeah, not going to put much more than the story idea out on the internet.

Um... I think you're being a little paranoid there.  Do you really think that anyone who has ever written a story about a potential presidential assassination is treated as a felon?  You do know there are professionally published novels out there that feature presidential assassination attempts as plot points?  Some even going as far to use real life presidents and kill them off?

The fact that you plan to make it a nameless president makes it something even less to worry about. >.>  Besides, I think it sounds like a pretty neat idea and you should at least give it a shot.

Actually, I'll be the first to admit I'm a very paranoid person. It's not that I don't trust the government, but that I think they know more about us than we think. But that's neither here nor there.

I'm actually starting to think I might do this for NaNo, though. Not sure how I'd make it 50,000 words, but I probably could. Maybe something like how Samuel Byck recorded messages to Richard Nixon about how he was going to kill him?

Everyone's writings will be rushed anyway, so there's no reason not to share it, right?

I've figured out what I want to write and how I want to write it. The only thing left is to go ahead and actually write it. I'm all sorts of disappointed in my own writing as of late, so this will be a merry masochistic venture!

Hope the rest of you fare better at the very least.

Last year I wrote a story that had a lot of,

Suddenly, Random charged into the building!
"I am necessary," Random declared boldly, jabbing his finger at Heroine, "to complete the wordcount! Where there is need, there is Random, for words will pave the way to victory!"
... and then more hijinks so that the story is utterly unreadable. :V

I should really revise it some time but meh. :effort:

As a curiousity, what genre is everyone writing for? I'm going for mystery, but I don't expect it'll be a great story of any kind, aha.
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month - NaNoWriMo 2011, get hype
Post by: Moerin on October 29, 2011, 06:02:30 PM
Erotic fiction, in the style of Kinoko Nasu.

...Seriously, um... Knowing me it'll probably end up being fantasy.  I can never seem to write anything with an attachment to the real world, ahah~

And if I ever need to fill up my wordcount, I'll just have everyone talk like Mojo Jojo, talking in a circuitous way and reiterating everything they say so as to push up the wordcount, that is to say using a lot of repetition like that famous green monkey in a way that will make my tally of phrases increase manyfold due to how it keeps restating every concept over and over again.

My profile says "erotic fiction" as a sneer towards the lack of an "action" genre in the drop-down menu (which is why my fic comes off as erotic eye surgery). Urban fantasy is closer to what I'm actually going for, though.

Romance/Fantasy/Slice of Life.
That is to say, slice of life in Gensokyo.

Although I came up with a new idea this morning which may get used instead. If I can think of an actual plotline for it.

For motivation, here's a neat thing to consider. If you go to a job interview and you are asked the question, "Describe a time you set a goal for yourself and how you went about accomplishing it," the completion of NaNoWriMo is a great example. I assure you your interviewer will find it interesting.

Now go hit those 50,000 words and it might even help you get a job!

Went in with absolutely no idea what I was gonna write.  I literally stared at my screen and said "I dunno, what do you wanna write?"

And my fingers wrote "I dunno, what do you wanna do?"

And somehow while writing the scene of two bored friends tossing a ball between them (and one of them spontaneously deciding he had telekinetic powers about ten lines in) the entire idea for a high action, modern fantasy Shounen series came rushing into my head.  About a fancy little diner where people with the potential to awaken to supernatural powers end up, and also there's eventual saving the world involved (possibly by punching cthulu in the face.  I'd like this to really happen).

After the major turning point of my story it is basically "main character becomes a futanari magical demon girl and defeats the enemies by having sex with them"

Also, do what you want ^_^

EDIT: Sad face, I did not attain my 15k word goal today. I did however attain 10k+ again.

aaaagh Chapter 1 done.

It's been so long since I wrote anything(or read anything substantial)... My writing style is all over the place, and I guess it didn't help that there was no dialogue in this chapter. I'm going to have to revert back to my old style of writing thought processes in italics and making characters say things that people normally wouldn't have said aloud. Or something.

AHHHH!  14 hours in and no words.  I'm panicking, I'm panicking!  In some seriousness I'm going to get some tonight when I get off work and do some tomorrow when I'm off.

My genre adventure.  And the main character is a pirate witch.  I've reworked most of the characters to be kind of not carbon copies of when it was a Touhou-fic, but the main character is still totally Marisa  :V

I take pride in the fact that I am writing a hopefully solid and lengthy tale of adventure and magic without sticking sex in.  Take that as you will.

i fucking hate life so much right now.

i entered this year optimistic, but the huge amount of work i've had to do throughout the entire month, not to mention dealing with the plethora of misfortune; has really sucked my ability to write quickly dry.

my only recourse now is to cram 22k words of nothing but writing next week. if I can write 10k words in one of the days next week, preferably monday, I would be extremely happy with that and stand a good chance of finishing. but as it is, i can't do jack at the moment, for the following reasons:

11:41:37 (kasuganoS) too much work
11:41:47 (kasuganoS) at this rate i'll only have 4~5 days to write 22k words
11:41:58 (kasuganoS) I have a 6 to 9PM exam on Friday
11:42:04 (kasuganoS) Next tuesday I may have another exam
11:42:11 (kasuganoS) This saturday I have a machien project due
11:42:16 (kasuganoS) This sunday I have community service
11:42:25 (kasuganoS) oh on Friday I have to give in some parts of my research paper too

Good luck to everybody still in the running. I know you want to work hard, but don't exhaust yourselves.

Finally done with this thing. It feels kind of cheating because my novel is basically three stories side by side with no relation at all, with 2 just being the same journal style I used for last year. It helps to add words, but it doesn't seem like a story I can show off, at all.

All right, the specific amount of hours left depends on your time zone, but everyone should be finishing up today. Those of you living in the States have anywhere from six to nine hours left before deadline. Best of luck to anyone who's still going!
