Ever since Touhou Soccer 2 was finished (and not being motivated to edit/translate the rest of CoLA), I've been thinking about the next fangame I should translate. I remember seeing this game in Akihabara, and being a big fan of the Ace Attorney games, I decided this would be a fun project to work on. I think there are at least two of these games and I would aim to translate in order however many there are.

I just have two questions:
1. Is there any interest in a patch for this?
2. Has another group/person on the internet started on this already?

Allow me to voice a lot of interest in this; I've played every Ace Attorney game, and would love to try out a Touhou take on it. Hell, I'd help if I knew Japanese...

My interest could be only shown as doing a video me running naked on the main square of my town, screaming "HELL YES".

I had the idea of doing this myself, but I couldn't even get the games to run, so it was astoundingly unlikely I'd be able to figure out how to hack them, either. (Translating RPG Maker games almost feels like cheating in comparison.)

As such, I have no idea if the content is even any good, but how far wrong can you really go? (Okay, well...)

I don't think anyone else's started/planned on it, or hacked the scripts out of it for that matter. Do you just plan to jot down the scripts as you play or something?

I'm working on my own project myself, but I'll be glad to provide editing/proofreading help if you need it.

I was unaware of these games existing.

I am very very interested.

Alright, I went ahead and bought the games yesterday. It turns out there are only two games, but they remade the first game (already) so I'm going to start with that.

My hacking knowledge is kind of limited, but I will attempt to root through the files and see if I can find where the text is stored. Otherwise, I will have to go through the game and try to do everything line by line which will be kind of annoying, but oh well. I'll see how it is set up first and then if I have to ask for help, I'll go from there.

Welp, it looks like everything's all wrapped up in one program. This could be annoying...

Anyone here any good at taking apart programs and try to find where the text is stored? I'm going to need someone who can do that at some point anyway since we've got to get the English text in there somehow. Alternatively, I could contact the circle itself and see if they can't give me a script. I guess if worse comes to worse I'll just translate as I play, heh.

Sorry that this is offtopic, but I'm hoping you guys simply didn't notice my other thread. But where does one go to learn about 'hacking' these games? I'm interested in learning how to help make translation patches myself, and am having a tough time learning the process other than the actual languages.

I searched around a bit. This .exe can be decompiled with ExtractData. (nevermind this program, there's an alternative included below)
From what I can tell, the text seems to be in the "scenario" folder in .ks files, which can be edited with notepad.
Not sure yet how to get everything put back together though >_>

EDIT: Here's what I've found so far. The exe is in a format that merges an executable and an archive (archive.xp3) into one file. A program called kiri_sm.exe can split and merge these files. A program called kikiriki.exe can extract and compile .xp3 archives. Here's a package with these programs.

http://www.mediafire.com/?ko0jww4ozwo

kiri_sm.exe -e gyakuten_touhou.exe
Splits gyakuten_touhou.exe into _detach.exe and archive.xp3

kikiriki.exe -i archive.xp3 -o gyakuten
Extracts all files from archive.xp3 and places them in a folder titled "gyakuten"

kikiriki.exe -c -i gyakuten -o archiveE.xp3
Compiles all files in the "gyakuten" folder into archiveE.xp3

kiri_sm.exe -m _detach.exe archiveE.xp3 gyakuten_touhouE.exe
Merges _detach.exe and archiveE.xp3 into gyakutek_touhouE.exe

That's what I have to offer on the subject :P

That's the exact same format as Touhou Pocket Wars lol.. I've never noticed an XP3 file before then. But assuming ace attorney is the same, it is indeed pretty easy.
I used a different tool for extracting and compiling though, I'm sure it's the same thing pretty much though since it also extracts into ks files (where the majority of the text is), tjs files (windows-window related files from what I gathered), and bmps, pngs, etc. If it doesn't work out for you Forza I'll fish the link for the one I used, should work if that one doesn't.

yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I just translated the little intro and it looks like everything should be fine for now. I probably won't be able to REALLY work on this until I finish my next book, but on the technical side, things should be A-OK.

Is it true that Shin Gyakuten Touhou is a remake of Gyakuten Touhou, as opposed to a sequel?

If so, are you working on Gyakuten Touhou, or Shin Gyakuten Touhou?

Shin is a remake of the original, so I will be working on Shin. I couldn't find any copies of the original for sale anyway.

Alright, I guess what I'm going to do is try to play through each case in Japanese first to get a feel for it and then translate them. I just finished the first case, which is the stardard short introductory case. This should be kind of interesting...

Spoilers for the second case: The accused in the second case is
Spoiler:
Marisa. Seems pretty hard for the second case...

Out of curiosity, what was the defendant (Cirno, I think) in Case 1 accused of?

Wow, I never played Gyakuten touhou thinking it would be the same as all the other gyakusai parodies of it but it does look very interesting...
Tell me if you need any help, I'm always willing to help out on stuff that looks fun :)

...Well, I can go ahead and do rough translations on the spot if its possible to find the .dat or what ever file that contains all the texts.

Hm, is there a faster way to put text into the game without having to reassemble the whole thing every time I make changes? There's about a couple thousand pictures it's got to compile despite only changing a single text file.

Hmm. From what Ghaleon said, there probably is. Let me check...
[minutes pass]
Yes, there is. If you put only the altered files into "patch.xp3" and leave it in the same folder as the executable, you don't even have to compile the exe; it will replace the new files on its own, just like in Pocket War.
