Title: Configuring Anex86 for Touhou (repost)

Under the Video Tab:

- Set Update Strategy to use Sync (as opposed to ASync), and set the value to 1.

Under the Wave Tab:

- Set Rate to 44KHz or 55KHz, set the buffer to 16, and check 'use wave out'.

Under the Sound Tab:

- Set 'type' to -86, and check 'real'.

Under the Font Tab:

- Download this font image file (it's basically a Japanese supported font, and it blows the default out of the sky.) (http://kaorin.pestermom.com/Other/anex86jbmp.rar)

- Put that font into your root anex86 directory.

- Click on '...', and set it to use the file.

Once you're done setting up, hit X and test run to see if everything works right.

The emulator is extremely CPU-intensive, so...I'd suggest raising the Sync value a bit.

For Frame Skipping:
Quote from: BaitySM
Config:

Window -> DirectX, Windowed, Fast 2 (may vary acc. to your compy)
Video -> Sync = 1 (you MAY want to increase this number)

*
Sync = 1; no frame skipping
Sync = 2; 1/2 frame rate (i.e. it skips half the frames)
Sync = 3; 1/3 frame rate

Is there any more helpful tips with the "Config" part of Anex86?

I'm using Anex86 under Wine.  When I set Video to Sync: 1 it works in fits and starts (sound and video), at 3 it works better but the sound isn't quite smooth.  Also, the video and audio tend to stop working at times, independently.  Under Async the video works okay, but the sound usually doesn't work at all.

I really do not know what is up with the sound in this emulator since on the default setting and the settings that were reposted the sound sounds fine for me. The only difference that I see in the settings is in the video with looks only a little bit nicer on the reposted settings.

To make it a bit better... in terms of clarification.

------

Config:

Window -> DirectX, Windowed, Fast 2 (may vary according to your computer)

Video -> Sync = 1 (you may want to increase this number if you are suffering from massive slowdown)
*
Sync = 1; no frame skipping
Sync = 2; 1/2 frame rate (i.e. it skips half the frames)
Sync = 3; 1/3 frame rate
etc.

------

ASync works fine for me at the minimum set value; 30. (in fact, it seems better... will check more)

I've also been playing around with the fonts, and found one that actually fits nicely; "MS ゴシック". Your PC needs to support Japanese though (I think?)

I've been playing around with T98-Next (http://www.geocities.jp/t98next/), and it works really nicely.  The sound works perfectly too, especially the percussion.  The only hitch I see with it is the text, it's a bit messed up, and there's no way to load a new text bitmap like with Anex86.

This is still all while running in Wine, on a 64-bit Linux install.

For anyone using T98-Next, there's a translated version here (http://www.zophar.net/download_file/2143) (via zophar.net (http://www.zophar.net/)).  Plays pretty well, with no funny text.  To load Touhou disk images (.hdi files) into it, go to Main > DISK > HD DRIVE and under drive 1 click the text box just to the left of the Edit button.  Browse to the disk image file and click the big power button to start.  Since they're disk images, all of your high scores and whatnot are saved into the images, no external score or config files like on the Windows games.

I'm not sure what system requirements the PC98 Touhou games need (FPU, CPU speed, RAM, etc.), but I have the CPU set to i486DX, CPU clock at 66MHz, and Memory at 64MB.

To configure your graphics settings, go to Device Manager, select GDC.nhw and click Settings.  You can set your frame skipping, screen resolutions, screenshot folder, and toggle fullscreen and windowed mode.

One recommendation, under GDC.nhw, set your frameskip to 1, as AUTO can sometimes cause the emulator to chug.

As for basic emulator controls, there's 6 big buttons on the left side of the emulator window; (from top down)  Power switch, Sleep/Resume switch (I think it only works for PC98 Windows), Reset switch, Toggle hardware settings, Help, and Quit.

Outside of that, most of the default settings T98-Next comes with should be optimal.

For Linux users:  This works great under Wine.  I've had occasional problems with it starting emulation with the emulator window not displaying, but I've recently reinstalled my system (cleaned up Wine folder, etc.) and it hasn't cropped up again.

For the Mystic Square disk at least, I noticed that the font used renders the letters "V" and "W" incorrectly (examples attached to this post). Can something be done with this?

PS: A huge thank-you! for the author of this guide. After readjusting the settings to "sync: 1" and changing the CPU affinity to only run on core 0 (at max. performance), I could for the first time see the game run with full framerate.

Can you make the T98-Next play full screen?

Under Device Manager click on GDC.nhw and then click on Setting. Then check Full Screen Display. This is of course, assuming that you're using the English interface. Remember to have the device enabled too (which it should be by default).

If you don't have the English interface version, then I would suggest you get it here (http://www.zophar.net/pc98/t98-next.html).

You shouldn't even need to do that for T98-Next, it can switch to fullscreen as soon as you unzip it (the middle one on Zophar is the English one). Simply hit F12 and then F10 to switch between windowed and fullscreen. F11 and F12 bring up menus along the bottom with options for F1-F10 and the Windowed/Disp Full is on the F12 menu (exit should be on the F11).

I'm having trouble getting sound to come out properly - it sounds like an instrument or two is getting dropped, and it's especially notable in TH4's Stage 3 BGM.  Tried the settings given in the opening post, as well as messing around with them on my own, nothing seems to work.  Have tried this on two separate computers, one running Windows XP the other running 7.  Also tried using T98-Next and had the same problem.

Under Option, what do you have configured for Music, FM(26) or FM(86)?

I was about to comment I had it setup like the OP post, at 86, then I realized you meant the in-game options.  I'd thought it was at 86 (I know it was set that way at least for Fuumaroku), but it apparently was at 26.  That solved it.  Thanks so much!

I felt that I should put this link here. It's a more detailed description on how to configure Anex and Next.

(It may look long but some of it is me rambling on)
Hope this helps some people!

Please use T98-Next, Anex86 doesn't play the music in HRtP right (missing percussion) and I think that Next just works better.

This is true, but I believe Anex just has music problems altogether. People just use anex86 because it doesn't lag. Next is far better except for the massive computer lag it produces.
Also, Next seems to behave differently depending on the computer. So it's whichever emulator works better is the one to stick with.

Just wanted to add that I'm also running these games on WINE, and these configurations have made the game smooth and the sound better. Thanks very much.
