Anyway, a couple of friends and I watched S1 a while back, shortly after it first aired, and we were pleasantly surprised with it. I should be giving this a look in the near future.

Never knew it was socially acceptable to really like a character because of appearance...glad it apparently is :p

I've watched the first ten eps of season 1, and really liked it. Though, what exactly makes this so unlike typical harem anime? I've never watched much of this "typical harem" stuff, so yeah :V

Easier to allow projection. If the character has no personality, anyone watching can put themselves in their place.
Also, characters with no personality make for shallower plots, which are easier to make.

Spineless male MCs in the middle of harems also make for a lot of "zany misunderstandings", shouts of "hentai!" and "baka!", and his embarrassed virgin-like reactions to stuff as harmless as seeing a girl in a swimsuit adds artificial sexual tension.

Yozora is just the most emotionally fragile of all of them, which she tries to compensate for through acts of emotional and physical cruelty. And that stuff goes waaay back to her early childhood, when she wouldn't even admit she was a girl.
