Post by: P♂ zeal on April 16, 2010, 12:24:32 AM
I play the sexiest instrument ever, the bell set. (http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb58/Pozeal/Bellset.jpg?t=1271377340) I even march with this beauty attached to me via a harness.
What musical instruments do you folks play?

Pozeal: Marching band is the shit. I was on the colorguard during high school. :V Talk about an uncoordinated bunch. I made captain because it seemed like I was one of the only ones who understood the concept of 'timing'.

Back when I was in high school, I used to play keyboard and guitar.  I was half-decent at keyboard, I guess.  Guitar... Um... I tried as hard as I could for five years, but showed no improvement whatsoever... So I ended up selling my guitar.  Sigh.  And as for the keyboard... I guess I just kinda drifted away from playing that.  I still have it, but it hasn't gotten new batteries in years, so...  Oh, and I suppose I did sing in a band for, um, a month.  It was a punk band, though, so I didn't really need any singing ability to, uh, sing in it...

I kinda hate the fact that I'm not musically gifted at all, as I really do love music.  Sigh... Maybe one day, ahah.

I only ever touched an instrument for school, so that was... piano and guitar. That's it. I love music, but I cannot play it or make it for my life.

I played the piano for years. Eventually it went from that to the organ. Some time later my teacher (Who was quite elderly) broke her hip and I haven't seen her since. Course I'm sure she's still fine as her school still runs.

I also played the clarinet and the guitar, neither of them I was that good at.

Though I think it was all the years of piano that got me my typing skills.

Played trumpet until freshman year of high school. The conductor was infamous for being a drunkard, most of the remaining band got too serious for my taste (like all things did in high school), and I was a third seat. Couldn't really practice at home because Mom hated hearing me practice anyway.

Might've continued, but seeing how receptive roommates might be for practice, I can't imagine that happening to any degree.

I played the flute quite well when a kid, and was a p nice violinist.
But I drifted away from it and now I'm just saving or planning to save for a new violin.

But I wouldn't even know where to start.

Also I think I'm a good singer, but nobody ever called me for anything so.

Primarily a clarinet player (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php?topic=5371.0) but in high school I also did tenor sax and flute (my senior year I was switched to flute despite being 1st clarinet because there were NO FLUTE PLAYERS wtf how does that happen?) and played recorder once for pit orchestra  :V

I was a gigantic band geek in high school, funny how I went to college at a school that didn't have any sort of music program, so I only recently picked up clarinet again after uh, 5 years or so and began toot-tooting away.

damn you kids and your synthesized musics.

Chinese drums are monotonous really, but damn, when there is a troupe with you eveyrthing you do feels supercharged. They should try that at the national football league, I think the players will play like it is the last day of their lives.

I ended up dropping band because I lost interest.  Didn't like the music we played, ended up not liking at least half of the members in high school (the amount increased once the seniors graduated), and didn't like the sax enough to put up with everything else.

Sadly there were no programs that covered strings since they comprised most of the instrumental music I listen(ed) to.

It was a trade off for me - I'm glad I did my undergrad where I did (also having a scholarship that made it cheaper than community college helped make that choice for me too!) and I really didn't have a stable enough homework/study schedule to do a formal band program, but I really did feel like I was missing something the further out from high school I got :(

In high school I played percussion, but mostly xylophone since the other percussionists didn't really like it. In the end I was the best Xylophone player in my grade :] :] :]  (and in grade 12; the whole school, although some of the people who graduated before me we still way better :ohdear:)

Quite the musical bunch we have here on motk, that is quite interesting to read.  Shame some people dropped it or stopped practising it. But yea I can understand some of them.

I play - surprisingly (not) - the guitar. (http://i41.tinypic.com/dljgcz.png) Currently electric, but planning on buying a cheap acoustic as well. After a year of messing around I haven't really build up skills. Mostly because I don't pursue the instrument to put more effort into it. Hope to improve that though upcoming days of my life. Example of what I somewhat can:

I joined the music club at the university to try and learn piano, but I really haven't had the time to book lessons. I've taught myself a little and can play some of a simple arrange of border of life... badly.

I was pleased to get something that sounded somewhat right out of the piano at least :V

but I'm sure I'm doing the hand wrong, and I cant play with two hands yet either. Nor can I read the key at the start of the music notes properly, I just sorta guess what its supposed to mean as it doesn't seem as simple as it did at first glance.

Bass, mandolin, guitar and banjo.

Started with bass just because. It's bad-ass. Then I started dating my first girlfriend as a freshman in high school, and wanted to impress her by writing her a song. I figured singing and bass alone would be a bit too sparse, so I wanted to go with something else. A mandolin is eight strings, but it's actually four pairs of strings. And while the bass strings go E, A, D, G, on mandolin the pairs of strings are G, D, A, E. Plus it's romantic. So I went with that. After a while I figured as long as I'm playing mandolin I might as well learn guitar, so I taught myself guitar. Later on down the road, I fell in love with the banjo, and bought one. Banjo is incredibly easy to play, too.

Similar story to Triangles, Primarily a clarinetist switched to Euphonium for marching band because didn't have any and needed one. Recently I've picked up the recorder for shits and giggles (can play a majority of the azumanga daioh soundtrack :D) I also picked up trumpet about a month ago and I'm making leaps and bounds in terms of progression there but still no where near where I want to be.  I also started practicing my clarinet again after Triangles posted that recording.

Don't you have like music clubs at school or areas where you can practise/try out things you like. And you speak of money but aside from large instruments, I don't see much money going into them. Example, I got my first guitar (2nd hand) for 30 euros (later on sold for 50 :V)

What you played horn too? brofist incoming

Swap french horn for main and trumpet for alt and you well, have a very small portion of the instruments I can play =|

I uhh, mained the french horn (first chair from basically 6th grade on, concert band/orchestra) and trombone (jazz band) and mellophone (marching band).  I can play the trumpet, the tuba, the baritone/euphonium, the flute, the clarinet, the bassoon, and violin.  I can also play the drumset pretty decently.  Currently I'm looking to take up cello and piano, and maybe guitar =T

My senior year of highschool I took 7 music classes (and one english class).  They ran out of music classes to give me, and my senior band plaque basically just has every single class possible listed on it.  Then I went to college and that's the day the music died.

I miss music :(

We really should start an MotK band or two, seriously \o/ And it looks like we have a fair number of people who used to play instruments and are itching to start up again, so maybe we could even hold some kind of events or a thread so people can encourage each other to practice and share their progress.

I guess I could do postprocessing/mastering work.  But I don't really play alone well, I play a lot better in unison with other people so I can adjust my tone/tuning and volume as necessary.

This reminds me to order a new mic - I lost a bid on eBay for one and never bothered to bid on another so mine is literally held together by duct tape and it's starting to be staticy up the wazoo, and static remove does lousy things to the sound quality as I learned with my latest set of recordings :(

And then there was the mouthpiece (http://www.amazon.com/Selmer-S80-Alto-Sax-Mouthpiece/dp/B0002E1IW8/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1271445839&sr=1-1-fkmr0) I replaced the stock one with.

I have a trombone in the closet that I haven't played since middle school. I would have gone into band in high school, but when I learned that it was going to take up a class slot, I opted out for something I figured I could use.

Last year (college freshman year), I picked up an $80 acoustic guitar set for a blues guitar class I took because it was interesting and to get that fine arts credit out of the way goddamn. All I really know now are blues chords, despite my old Yuuka avatar and Ijiyatsu persona. I do want to actually learn it more, but that's one of the many things I've had to leave on the back burner.

In order of descending skill level:

I mainly play percussion instruments. Battery, percussion "toys", SFX, mallets, miscellaneous membranophones, you name it.  I first started with the piano, but it was too hard to teach it to myself, so went to something simpler: battery percussion and toys/SFX. After I mastered all 40 rudiments, I started to lean towards mallet percussion. Now, I almost always play either marimba, vibraphone, timpani, or toys/SFX.

I also play the bassoon. This instrument was the hardest instrument I've tried to play. It took me a looooong time before I got comfortable with it. I almost gave up on it, but its sound was too beautiful to give up. I don't have my own bassoon though, because each one costs way too much.

Then there's the bass guitar. I just love bass instruments. I played a regular guitar at first, but I just didn't like it that much. So, I switched to bass guitar.

I've played alto, tenor, and bari sax at a decent level. I eventually stuck with alto sax because my older brother plays tenor and my younger brother plays bari.

I started flute for a few months, but my younger brother soared way past my level so I got discouraged. I also play trumpet and trombone (mostly trombone) when I have to fill in for someone who's absent, usually second chair. And of all the wind instruments in a concert band, I've never tried clarinet. I've always wanted to take cello, but never really got around to it.

Everything listed, with the exception of drum rudiments, was self-taught.

Cello and piano
I  just started learning guitar and sheng. So I pretty much suck at those two. But not for long.
[y]Bowed string
[y]Keyboard
[y]Plucked string
[y]Wind with reed inside
[n]Brass
[n]Woodwind
Two left...
ha..ha..ha... Actually I'm want to be a composer in the future, so learning all types of instrument will help.

I've played the violin in elementary school, and all the way through middle school. I was good, I guess.
But the high school I go to has a music class, but nothing for violin, so I stopped.

But what I really loved was the piano. I've learned the basics in elementary school, but I've seemed to forgot it.  :ohdear: Though, I would really like to learn again.
There's so many Touhou boss themes that I want to play.  :3

I'm seriously becoming depressed by the fact that I dropped violin and music in general for so long.

Yay, trackers. :brofist:

Though I've pretty much exclusively used AdlibTrackerII and GoatTracker myself. There's nothing like the sound of a genuine SID6581 or OPL3 (though emulation for the latter has gotten to be *very* good as of late now that someone's decapped the chip and the sine lookup table (among other things) has been fully dumped).

Most glorious musical instrument ever created y/y
y.

Also the most difficult to synthesize properly without it sounding like ass, and near-impossible to synthesize realistically (I have heard someone pull it off. It was on the FS1R. Y'know, the thing that can somewhat decently synthesize human voice using formant sequences. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRcfstepC3I&fmt=18) (Also, note that that video doesn't even come close to demonstrating the full capabilities of the FS1R, it's actually kind of lame. But it's the only thing that youtube has up atm, and I don't have one of my own yet so...yeah.))

Anyway, piano here for...5 years now, and I'm now at a level wherein I can play without being immediately offensive to everyone's ears :P Played clarinet through high school but was never good or terribly into band, and in college I kind of haven't had much time for music, even though I've only become more and more interested in it. Sigh.

Also I've very recently (as of a couple months ago) started learning violin and holy shit is this thing fun to play with. Unfortunately I still suck and likely will for a long time, so yeah.

This reminds me to order a new mic - I lost a bid on eBay for one and never bothered to bid on another so mine is literally held together by duct tape and it's starting to be staticy up the wazoo, and static remove does lousy things to the sound quality as I learned with my latest set of recordings :(
Get a Shure SM57 or SM58. They still go for pretty cheap on ebay and their quality is somehow *still* unmatched despite them being based on a 45-year old design that really has not changed much since then (apart from the usual set of minor incremental improvements). The SM58 is really just an SM57 except without the windscreen, the windscreen is primarily of use if you're recording vocals or stuff that produces high sound pressure levels such as percussion (especially snare drums), both will work equally well for woodwinds/brass/bowed strings (though an electric violin is obviously ideal here)/mallet percussion/handbells/etc.

I play piano. Still beginning, but I've already composed one song, and played a few Touhou songs... Albeit extremely simplified versions that barely use the left hand <_<; Though at least I seem to be pretty decent at simplifying them from the sheet music.

Well here's the thing - I'm on a business model laptop with who knows how crappy a sound card.  I was using a $20 USB mic which was fine enough but maybe I can upgrade a bit and my computer won't make it moot?  I am bad at technology!

Also I came back this evening to a bunch of subscribers and my first comment on my Youtube channel thanks guys  :3

..They leave after a minute ;-;

Ok I decided to retake flute as a way of re-learning how to read music, since that's how I'd learned it in the first place.

It seems quite plausible so far, I've been reading and long-term memory is helping.

I used to practice violin, piano and guitar. Never was any good at it, though. Probably because I didn't have a good ear for tones. Also :effort:.
But I'm thinking on getting some classes from old music teacher again as soon as I have more free time. If only to remember some stuff.
This thread is really really making me want to get myself a new violin as soon as possible.
Remindingme of how I loved the thing.
This, basically. Except that I still have my violin, only need some new strings. :P

With this, I never tried anything, so I don't really know if I have any kind of talent at all.

So are we going to do an ensemble piece or something...? Seems like a good idea, but the means of doing that seems complicated +_+
Title: Re: ITT Musical instruments we play
Post by: triangles on April 23, 2010, 04:34:20 AM
It is complicated, I'm not even sure the best way to do it just yet I still struggle to mix with myself and I can control the tempo and such alot easier as one person as opposed to however many  :ohdear:

Once the semester ends in a month, I can see about trying to wrangle some sort of plan but I do encourage anyone interested to at least try to record/mix just to get a feel for what you'll be up against.

Now if only I had some recording software ;-;

But I suppose it would work if we had sheet music and a metronome, cause then we could just record everyone and compile it electronically...

It'd require a lot of coordination and organization to get something like this together, and I have my hands tied in other things else i'd try and do it myself.

I have an acoustic guitar and I used to be able to play a PART of ONE song, but I forgot how. I'm thinking about getting real lessons soon.
I also want to learn to play Accordian, solely so I can play "At the end of spring lane" or whatever the stage 1 theme from UFO was.
And I sing when none is looking, if that counts :U
