Tricky IM/IP contest OVER!
« on: April 01, 2011, 08:57:12 AM »
You bums with blue names are a boring bunch that do nothing. Maybe we'll get a fiery new challenger that'll shake things up out of this.

183
642
507

Name the touhou and the full reasoning. Correct answer to both parts promotes you up to IM. Partial correct answers let's you move up 1 rank. If the winner already holds IM, they may nominate someone to promote. Post your answers here, spamming guesses will be penalised.

Hmm, a magic square.

I'd say Cirno, but I'm not quite sure why.

I wonder if there's a particular reason why Teitei decided it'd be a good idea to take the same magic square and flip it upside down

I should try looking at it as if it were a matrix and see what things I get from it

Magic square. Horizontally, diagonally, or vertically, it adds up to 12.

There are 3 rows and columns. Each row and column adds 12, so if we add the answer of the three rows, that's 36. If we add the two digits of that, that is 9. Not to mention that 36 is divisible by 9.

3 rows again. Each row adds up to 12. We add the two digits and the answer is 3. Ditto for the other two rows. Add that and it becomes 9. Also that 3 is the square root of 9.

I'll think of more theories as to why Cirno's the answer but yeah. Goddamit, I wish I wasn't spouting out random nonsense.

Okay, so the sum is 12.
Clearly this is referring to Touhou 12.
Which character is currently running rampant on these forums from Touhou 12?
Kogasa Tatara.
It just so happens that Pesco is also using this character for his avatar.
Coincidence? I think not.

Here's my half-assed go at it.

The sum is 12.
There are 8 ways to make it.
8 x 12 = 96.
96 can be factored into 2^5 x 3.
2^5 x 3...The fifth power of two, and also three...
So I guess Mima.  L5 boss of SoEW, and in PoDD.
This also factors into why the riddle has the form it does - Mima is in Mystic Square as well.
(and then she was KILL BY YUKARI)
Life and death are without purpose.  Our attempts to give them one are quite presumptuous of us.  But in the end, we exist, and that is enough.

It is Cirno

Rows, columns and diagonals add up to 12. Furthermore we know that cirno cannot count and that 9 is the only number not present. This topic was posted in Cirno's forum and fairy wars was part of the 12th touhou generation (12.8).

1   8   3    -> 1 playable character, 8 characters (cirno, marisa, 3 fairies, 3 midbosses), 3 main routes
6   4   2    -> ....
5   0   7    -> 5 difficulties (easy, normal, hard, lunatic, extra), 7 routes (A1,2,B1,2,C1,2,Extra)

I'm too lazy (read: stupid) to think of more hidden secrets -> more proof dat this is an idiot's doing.

Okay, I've got a theory. First, the old stuff I'm building on:

The answer is 12. No matter which direction, everything adds up to 12.
I'll go further with Doll's theory: each line, when added up, equals twelve. The digital root of twelve is three. There are a number of eight lines, including diagonals, so [other stuff I'm not using in my theory]

The three numbers we've got here are 12, 3 and 8. TH12.3 and TH12.8 had one game between them, TH12.5 Double Spoiler. Replacing the numbers in the square with Double Spoiler's bosses by stage produces this:

1 (Minoriko & Shizuha)   8 (Rin & Utsuho)   3 (Yamame & Kogasa & Kisume)
6 (Yuugi & Suika)   4 (Nitori & Momiji)   2 (Parsee & Hina)
5 (Ichirin & Murasa)   0   7 (Shou & Nazrin)

This arrangement is almost balanced, but not quite. There's no Stage 0, and Stage 3 has one more boss than the others. But if Unzan is counted separately from Ichirin, then Stage 5 also has one boss too many, conveniently leaving us with two out-of-place bosses to move to "Stage 0."

Out of the three Stage 3 bosses, Kogasa is clearly the one out of place. The odd boss out of Stage 5 could be any of the three, but it doesn't even matter?a combination of Kogasa (umbrella) and either Ichirin (hood), Unzan (cloud) or Murasa (water) would, more or less, indicate rain. And who in Touhou is most associated with rain?

Quote from: Touhou Wiki - Marisa Kirisame
The characters for Kirisame literally mean "drizzle" or "misty rain".
Quote from: Touhou Wiki - Marisa Kirisame
Speaking of rain, "drizzle" is Marisa's associated weather in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.

Marisa Kirisame!

And there are other things possibly pointing to her:
  • Marisa's sigil from The Grimoire of Marisa includes a series of squares (within one another).
  • The only PC-98 game in which Marisa doesn't have a wand is Mystic Square.
  • So far, the only Windows game in which Marisa has a wand is Touhou 12.
  • So far, Marisa has been playable twelve times (not counting Hisoutensoku because she wasn't playable in that game's Story Mode).
  • A magic square is a mathematical construct, and Marisa, well:
Quote from: Touhou Wiki - Marisa Kirisame
Marisa may be somewhat of a math genius; in Mountain of Faith she utters the line "I could recite all the digits in pi before I got there." However, considering that pi has a literally infinite number of digits which never end or repeat in any pattern (really, it's endless), it's likely just an expression to say "at this rate I'll never get there." She also knew the number of times she had eaten bread off the top of her head when she originally confronted Remilia in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.
  • Marisa is a magician, and a magic square is a MAGIC square.

Now, I am aware that Pesco said in the old thread that the answer is simpler than Sect's Merlin theory (which was less complicated than this Marisa theory). And since I know that, there are two possibilities:
  • I don't actually believe in the theory I'm proposing, and thus am lying. Marisa lies all the time!
  • I'm insane. Marisa once claimed to be insane (in Imperishable Night Final B)!

Treat the numbers as games, and replace them with the initials of said games.
Then we get

HIP
ELS
MMP

(Mountain of Faith was used for 0, because it's 10.)

HIP = Part of the human body. Big hips imply big breasts.
ELS = Encyclopedia of Life Sciences - Covering everything that is NOT an unusual phenomena
MMP = Perhaps a shortened form of 'mmph', more drunken onomatopoeia.

Reading down:
HEM = To sew something together - say, a skirt.
ILM = Institute of Leadership and Management - suggesting, for example, a high ranking member of the race
PSP = The Playstation Portable - A handheld with a strap you can place around your wrist so that it won't even drop.

Reading the diagonals:
HLP = Hard Light Productions - Get hit hard, and you'll see the light of stars dancing around your eyes.
PLM = Mount Palomar in California - used to detect earthquakes, which can be theoretically produced by a character stepping on the ground with great physical strength.

So we're looking for a character who has big breasts, is related to unusual phenonmena, gets horribly drunk, wears a skirt, ranks highly in their race, doesn't even drop, punches things, and has immense physical strength.

Sounds like Yuugi, don't you think?

Spoiler:
And yes, I did pretty much make this up as I went along. :V

Working off Dormio's idea. Not sure if this came up in the old thread, cba'd reading through it.

It's a magic square, which first of all means it's mathematical. The main character associated with mathematics (based on an interview in BAiJR) is Ran. Conveniently, she's also versed in black magic.

Those are the only two answers I'm wiling to give for this because it's so freaking open I could write theses on the subject.

My guess?

The puzzle doesn't have any correct answer.  Pesco just put down a set of numbers and wants to see everyone run wild with their insane theories on how those numbers can relate to any given character.  He will then pick his favorite one and think "sure, why not?", declaring that to be the correct answer and granting IM to the one with the best imagination.

Or if I were to venture a real guess, then Alice, because the purpose of the puzzle is to make us dance like puppets as we play Pesco's little game.
Whether you're on Easy or you're a Lunatic, be damn proud of your accomplishments.  Don't let anyone convince you otherwise, for it's when you lose faith in your own achievements that those victories become defeats.

Let me go off on an entirely different tangent:

183
642
507

When read as a single number, we get 183642507

The integer factorization of 183642507 is:

183642507 = 3 * 3 * 37 * 223 * 2473

3, 37, 223 and 2473 are ALL "lucky numbers".

183642507 is thusly made up of lucky primes. Who is the prime character associated with good luck?

Tewi!

Actually the answer is Tewi because this is just an elaborate prank - there is no prize to win to begin with!

Each row, column, and diagonal of the square adds up to twelve. There are three rows, three columns, and three diagonals. 12 / 3 = 4.

4 is the number in the center of this square, meaning it is the most significant number in this square.

4 can be read as "shi", which can be also read as "death". A dead person is a ghost. Mima is a ghost.

Mima appeared in 4 of the 5 PC-98 games.

We're never going to figure out the true answer to this puzzle. Mima will never return in a Touhou game.
