Title: Tricky IM/IP contest OVER!
Post by: Pesco on April 01, 2011, 08:57:12 AM
You bums with blue names are a boring bunch that do nothing. Maybe we'll get a fiery new challenger that'll shake things up out of this.

183
642
507

Name the touhou and the full reasoning. Correct answer to both parts promotes you up to IM. Partial correct answers let's you move up 1 rank. If the winner already holds IM, they may nominate someone to promote. Post your answers here, spamming guesses will be penalised.

Hmm, a magic square.

I'd say Cirno, but I'm not quite sure why.

I wonder if there's a particular reason why Teitei decided it'd be a good idea to take the same magic square and flip it upside down

I should try looking at it as if it were a matrix and see what things I get from it

Magic square. Horizontally, diagonally, or vertically, it adds up to 12.

There are 3 rows and columns. Each row and column adds 12, so if we add the answer of the three rows, that's 36. If we add the two digits of that, that is 9. Not to mention that 36 is divisible by 9.

3 rows again. Each row adds up to 12. We add the two digits and the answer is 3. Ditto for the other two rows. Add that and it becomes 9. Also that 3 is the square root of 9.

I'll think of more theories as to why Cirno's the answer but yeah. Goddamit, I wish I wasn't spouting out random nonsense.

Okay, so the sum is 12.
Clearly this is referring to Touhou 12.
Which character is currently running rampant on these forums from Touhou 12?
Kogasa Tatara.
It just so happens that Pesco is also using this character for his avatar.
Coincidence? I think not.

Title: Re: Tricky IM/IP contest

Here's my half-assed go at it.

The sum is 12.
There are 8 ways to make it.
8 x 12 = 96.
96 can be factored into 2^5 x 3.
2^5 x 3...The fifth power of two, and also three...
So I guess Mima.  L5 boss of SoEW, and in PoDD.
This also factors into why the riddle has the form it does - Mima is in Mystic Square as well.
(and then she was KILL BY YUKARI)

It is Cirno

Rows, columns and diagonals add up to 12. Furthermore we know that cirno cannot count and that 9 is the only number not present. This topic was posted in Cirno's forum and fairy wars was part of the 12th touhou generation (12.8).

1   8   3    -> 1 playable character, 8 characters (cirno, marisa, 3 fairies, 3 midbosses), 3 main routes
6   4   2    -> ....
5   0   7    -> 5 difficulties (easy, normal, hard, lunatic, extra), 7 routes (A1,2,B1,2,C1,2,Extra)

I'm too lazy (read: stupid) to think of more hidden secrets -> more proof dat this is an idiot's doing.
Title: Re: Tricky IM/IP contest
Post by: Whatthe on April 01, 2011, 12:00:22 PM
Okay, I've got a theory. First, the old stuff I'm building on:

The answer is 12. No matter which direction, everything adds up to 12.
I'll go further with Doll's theory: each line, when added up, equals twelve. The digital root of twelve is three. There are a number of eight lines, including diagonals, so [other stuff I'm not using in my theory]

The three numbers we've got here are 12, 3 and 8. TH12.3 and TH12.8 had one game between them, TH12.5 Double Spoiler. Replacing the numbers in the square with Double Spoiler's bosses by stage produces this:

1 (Minoriko & Shizuha)   8 (Rin & Utsuho)   3 (Yamame & Kogasa & Kisume)
6 (Yuugi & Suika)   4 (Nitori & Momiji)   2 (Parsee & Hina)
5 (Ichirin & Murasa)   0   7 (Shou & Nazrin)

This arrangement is almost balanced, but not quite. There's no Stage 0, and Stage 3 has one more boss than the others. But if Unzan is counted separately from Ichirin, then Stage 5 also has one boss too many, conveniently leaving us with two out-of-place bosses to move to "Stage 0."

Out of the three Stage 3 bosses, Kogasa is clearly the one out of place. The odd boss out of Stage 5 could be any of the three, but it doesn't even matter?a combination of Kogasa (umbrella) and either Ichirin (hood), Unzan (cloud) or Murasa (water) would, more or less, indicate rain. And who in Touhou is most associated with rain?

Quote from: Touhou Wiki - Marisa Kirisame
The characters for Kirisame literally mean "drizzle" or "misty rain".
Quote from: Touhou Wiki - Marisa Kirisame
Speaking of rain, "drizzle" is Marisa's associated weather in Scarlet Weather Rhapsody.

Marisa Kirisame!

And there are other things possibly pointing to her:

Now, I am aware that Pesco said (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8380.msg550680.html#msg550680) in the old thread that the answer is simpler than Sect's Merlin theory (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8380.msg550656.html#msg550656) (which was less complicated than this Marisa theory). And since I know that, there are two possibilities:

Treat the numbers as games, and replace them with the initials of said games.
Then we get

HIP
ELS
MMP

(Mountain of Faith was used for 0, because it's 10.)

HIP = Part of the human body. Big hips imply big breasts.
ELS = Encyclopedia of Life Sciences - Covering everything that is NOT an unusual phenomena
MMP = Perhaps a shortened form of 'mmph', more drunken onomatopoeia.

Reading down:
HEM = To sew something together - say, a skirt.
ILM = Institute of Leadership and Management - suggesting, for example, a high ranking member of the race
PSP = The Playstation Portable - A handheld with a strap you can place around your wrist so that it won't even drop.

Reading the diagonals:
HLP = Hard Light Productions - Get hit hard, and you'll see the light of stars dancing around your eyes.
PLM = Mount Palomar in California - used to detect earthquakes, which can be theoretically produced by a character stepping on the ground with great physical strength.

So we're looking for a character who has big breasts, is related to unusual phenonmena, gets horribly drunk, wears a skirt, ranks highly in their race, doesn't even drop, punches things, and has immense physical strength.

Sounds like Yuugi, don't you think?

And yes, I did pretty much make this up as I went along. :V

Working off Dormio's idea. Not sure if this came up in the old thread, cba'd reading through it.

It's a magic square, which first of all means it's mathematical. The main character associated with mathematics (based on an interview in BAiJR) is Ran. Conveniently, she's also versed in black magic.

Those are the only two answers I'm wiling to give for this because it's so freaking open I could write theses on the subject.

My guess?

The puzzle doesn't have any correct answer.  Pesco just put down a set of numbers and wants to see everyone run wild with their insane theories on how those numbers can relate to any given character.  He will then pick his favorite one and think "sure, why not?", declaring that to be the correct answer and granting IM to the one with the best imagination.

Or if I were to venture a real guess, then Alice, because the purpose of the puzzle is to make us dance like puppets as we play Pesco's little game.

Let me go off on an entirely different tangent:

183
642
507

When read as a single number, we get 183642507

The integer factorization of 183642507 is:

183642507 = 3 * 3 * 37 * 223 * 2473

3, 37, 223 and 2473 are ALL "lucky numbers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky_number)".

183642507 is thusly made up of lucky primes. Who is the prime character associated with good luck?

Tewi!

Actually the answer is Tewi because this is just an elaborate prank - there is no prize to win to begin with!

Each row, column, and diagonal of the square adds up to twelve. There are three rows, three columns, and three diagonals. 12 / 3 = 4.

4 is the number in the center of this square, meaning it is the most significant number in this square.

4 can be read as "shi", which can be also read as "death". A dead person is a ghost. Mima is a ghost.

Mima appeared in 4 of the 5 PC-98 games.

We're never going to figure out the true answer to this puzzle. Mima will never return in a Touhou game.

Economy, huh?

Who cares about the economa? The Tea Party!

Who regularly holds Tea Parties in good ends? Reimu!

Now, to analyze these numbers with Reimu in mind:

183
642
507

Usually you have the numbers from 1 to 9 in such a square, but this one has the numbers from 0 to 8 instead. The 9 got replaced by a zero, but why is that?
Assuming the 9 represents Cirno, we have to look for an absence of her. Which games do not feature Cirno?
THRtP, SoEW, PoDD, LLS, MS, IamP, IN, MoF, SWR, SA, UFO, DS
We see, all of these games also feature Reimu! Coincidence? I think not.

Going further, as has been noticed, the numbers in each line add up to twelve. However, this does not refer to UFO, oh no! The actual twelveth touhou game was Mountain of Faith! Once again, Reimu is playable in this game! The evidence just keeps piling up, guys! It is totally Reimu!

Read the clue at least 3 layers beyond what's given.
The answer is Cirno.

1   8   3
6   4   2
5   0   7

You're going three layers beyond what's given. Meaning you subtract by three. Twelve is the answer given in the square.

12 - 3 = 9
Cirno is a (9). As a bonus the magic square also features every number up to 8. 9 is the next number in line.

Also for anyone curious, the magic square using 1 to 9 contains nine numbers and so is a 3x3 square. The numbers summed together make 45, which divided by 3 makes 15 for each row.

6 1 8
7 5 3
2 9 4

This is said square.

I'm guessing I have to figure out a number pattern from these 3 sets of numbers, which can be either vertically or horizontally, and continue with that pattern to form more numbers. Then the part comes with all the linking numbers with names of touhous.

So we all know every which way and their mother, when you add all this up, it turns into 12. Now, How many characters are the 12th touhou game? 12. Who's the 12th character? Myouren. Why? He was supposed to be the final boss. The FINAL boss. As in, the last character you would have met.

But this could also mean it's Nue. She is technically the 12th character you "meet" in the game. First three being the Playable's, Nazrin Kogasa etc etc. Byakuren is the 10th person you "meet", this is including Unzan. She is the final boss. Now where do you learn about Nue? After beating the whole game on clear. But when do you get Byakurens Profile? After you beat her in any way. Her dead brother, Myouren, is mentioned in there, so technically that makes him the 11th character you meet. Then you meet Nue. It's as simple as that, really.

So basically my answer is Nue, though chances are I'm waaaay off.

1   8   3
6   4   2
5   0   7

11   18   13
6    4     2
5    0     7

Formula: (1st row number - 2nd row number * nth column)
11 - 6 * 1 = 5
18 - 4 * 2 = 10
13 - 2 * 3 = 7

Looking at the numbers in a Japanese way... Kotohime?

Is the answer "Touhou 12, Unidentified Fantastic Object?" You did say "name the Touhou," not "name the character."

It also can be 12.3 12.5 and 12.8 ... for some reason. Like 12.3 cus digital root of 12 is 3. 12.5 Because.... let's just stay With Touhou Hisoutensoku

I thought of that, but figured there must be some significance to the fact that the numbers add up to 12.

I found some kinda symbol:

(http://i56.tinypic.com/332wj1l_th.png) (http://i56.tinypic.com/332wj1l.png)

Notably, both (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8380.msg548439.html#msg548439) versions (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,8819.msg591189.html#msg591189) of the magic square produce the exact same symbol?the symbol itself is the same when rotated 180 degrees. This symbol could be seen as the beginnings of a spider web, and a certain spider youkai is shown rotated 180 degrees on the cover of Subterranean Animism's demo CD...

Draw a line from 0 to 8. On both of the magic squares. It doesn't matter which one you use.

You should have a pattern. The pattern is symmetrical. You can make the same pattern by only talking half of the picture and flipping it both horizontally and vertically.

Koishi's theme is symmetrical.

Magic Square of 12...

... or, 'magic square' minus one?

No, a mathematical magic square is of indefinite size, not only 3. So this is specifically a '3' magic square. Minus one, would be a magic square of two...?

Wikipedia's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_square) cultural notes seem to point toward Saturn or turtles as another possibility...

Since I can't think of anything Touhou that would really point toward Saturn, the asteroid belt, or Mars (possible Saturn-1s), I'm gonna guess Reimu as a vague 'Genji-1'.

Flandre Scarlet!

Because of her trademark "kyuu."
  • The magic square contains every digit but 9, the japanese word for which is "kyuu"
  • "Kyuu" could be derived from the clue "Fuck you"
Thought of a couple more reasons it could be Flandre:

The square had 9 replaced with 0. Nine is 九 kyuu, while zero can be seen as "nothing" 無 mu. Mu and kyuu, you see where this is going :3

is it because patchouli is referred to as the wizard of the week?

5 (the five elements) + 7 (all days in the week) = 12
Title: Re: Tricky IM/IP contest
Post by: Dead Princess Sakana on April 02, 2011, 07:06:54 AM
I'll leave that to someone else, wouldn't have any use for the IM anyway if that was the right direction. :V

(To explain though: "Replace" was meant in the sense that I saw a square with numbers 1 through 9 as the "standard", so use of 0 through 8 is unusual and in comparison to standard 0 replaces 9. Not that the square is the same as the 1-9 version only with 9->0, that wouldn't work after all. Yay fishy logic :V)

Title: Re: Tricky IM/IP contest
Post by: Kips McKipzerson on April 02, 2011, 07:09:27 AM
The lack of of a nine means that there's 0 nines, which 0 means Mu and nine means Kyuu. So there, having no nines in the magic square means that there's Mu Kyuu. And the fact that patchy is related to magic.

So, amidoingitrite?
