So I've had this idea going about in my head lately. It's so crazy that it just might work. Behold, the idea behind this all:

You want to drum up attention for people's stuff? (Get someone to) Write a <time period-based repetition> literary review of the works going on there. Give a quick summary, both of the story's events and the type of story, then link it. Then post it up in Math Class or Everything Else or wherever you think people need to see it. Maybe spotlight older works worthy of attention. It'll help people know what's what and what's interesting, and natural curiosity will follow.

Project name: Let's Tour MotK Fanworks Listing

We are going to go through all (as of January 31st, 2010) nine pages' worth of fanworks here and list them as a directory. It will give a title, link the piece, and give a short summary and genre list. Here's an example of what I have in mind:

So far, the only people working on this are me and Moe Moe Sakana Katana. Right now, we're working on a preliminary listing of names and writers. Nine pages' worth of fanworks is nothing to laugh at, but this task will be substantially easier if we can get help from you, the userbase. (Some of these fiction pieces are so long that I fear brain implosion if we do this on our own.)

Everyone is welcome to help, no matter if you're an experienced member or a complete newbie. The only thing I ask is that no writers submit their own summaries, as we want to keep this as unbiased as possible. There are two ways you can help:

1. Submit summaries of fanfiction in this thread, using the format shown above.
2. Join this project team by PMing me or Sakana. After we get ourselves more organized, I will send out a PM indicating which fics you are to read and summarize. This is mostly because of fics like White Rose or Frame of the Undying Fortitude, which are multi-chapter epics that I cannot expect to be read and summarized in a few minutes like oneshots can.

Unless you want to see me and Sakana turn into undead literary zombies, you are welcome to help any way you can, as this is a rather difficult task and we really need the help.

People who don't say anything to me get NOTHING changed, your sorrow is pathetic compared to my amusement at your expense, etc etc.

Note: Not all the stuff in fanworks is actually fanfiction. There will be categories for visual arts, musical arts, and miscellaneous stuff later.

Any story with more than one genre has been placed into the general genre heading that it most closely belongs to, but it has all of the other genres listed, with a double pound mark in front of them. One day, however, the espers in the gaps report that everyone in Japan has mysteriously vanished. The Zombie Apocalypse has occurred, and Yukari demands to know why. She gathers Reimu and a few select others to accompany her to Japan with a survivor from the zombie uprising to uncover some surprising answers. Being a Left 4 Dead crossover fic, expect to see lots of zombies, including the Special Infected. A-F brings us an idea for a new SI, and incorporates it very well, with researched origins for the zombies and their true underlying causes. Easily worth a read.

However, it's not long until the protagonist realizes that his stay in Gensokyo is only temporary.

Resurrection in Gensokyo (RiG 2)

Summary: The protagonist of the previous story, named "Haru" by his friend Yuka Kazami, has been resurrected in Gensokyo as a youkai, trying to fit himself back into the fantasy land. Almost immediately, though, things get more exciting with a competition being held by Yukari Yakumo in order to see which of the residents of Gensokyo are the most powerful. Yuka, naturally, aspires for this title, and drags Haru into working with her to win. Though the two win the contest easily, Yukari has a bigger game in mind, whisking Yuka and Haru to the outside world and stripping them of their youkai powers. With the help of some old friends, the two youkai must defeat Yukari and find a way back to Gensokyo.

Retribution in Gensokyo (RiG 3)

Summary: Haru is unceremoniously woken up by his acquaintance, Yuka Kazami, to a seemingly uneventful day. However, that uneventful day becomes much more thrilling as the two realize that an evil force is attacking the residents of Gensokyo. They are soon allied with Marisa Kirisame and Mima, as well as former enemy Yukari Yakumo, who explains the shocking past and the current malevolence terrorizing Gensokyo. However, this evil appears to be more trouble than they expected, so they must do everything they can to stop it.

Reminiscence in Gensokyo (RiG 4)

Summary: Years after the previous story, Haru and Yuka awake to yet another incident in Gensokyo. With the usual incident-solvers on vacation, Yuka has it in mind to take charge of this incident, and takes Haru and Kikuri, a new ally, to find the cause. However, they soon meet some newly-made youkai that aren't just the perpetrators, but also old friends.

@ Moe Moe Sakana Katana (I'm sorry, I can't help but type that): We have six people working on this. As much as I would love to have lots more help, I also fear for my management skills. It's going to be quite difficult to work with a larger group. How does a cap of seven sound?

If anyone else really wants to help, they can just send in summaries directly (which would be incredibly useful, actually). The whole point of this team is to burrow deep into Patchurry's Printing Press Scarlet Library and review the works that people don't really want to summarize or haven't seen.

Note: Thanks to forum reorganization, we no longer really have to deal with art and music stuff. We can worry about those a later time. Yay!

Right-o. Here's what I'm planning so far:

As soon as I get home I'll start organizing the main fanworks list into six or seven smaller lists and assign each of you one to read. Ideally, no more than one really long work should be in each list, but it depends on how many we've got.

Also, I think we should make a special note for Genre: Short Story Collection, as I know Rou and I seem to be fond of writing those. :toot: Some of the fics in there are serious, some are tragedies, etc. No way to categorize them all. We'll leave that to the writers themselves if they want.

And my stance on fiction with images is something like this: If it has a plot, it's a story, so it belongs here. Exceptions can be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, though.

D: Hmm, but now that I look at it more closely, I see Sweet Dreams listed as "long", which puzzles me because I think it's short. >_> What standards did you use for categorizing them? More than two pages is the only thing that strikes me as qualifying for "long". (Also hi UD and Mima. I SEEEEEE YOUUUU.)

I only scouted over the pages briefly and decided on the number and lenght of posts and text density.
Short should take <15 min. Medium 15-30 min. and long >30 minutes, or something like that.

For a short fic, one or two sentences, maybe three. For a medium-sized fic, three to five. For one of the scary epic tales (White Rose, Flame of the Undying Fortitude, Any UD Fic Ever), five or six.

Thanks for taking the time to edit the list, Sakura, guess we're almost ready to go then.

Before the big summarizing starts, I'd suggest that we try to come up with a list of genres that we want to use for classifying the fics.
Because I know that I will have a lot of trouble coming up with the right genre names, and maybe other people will as well.

Also, should we set a standard of which file-types to use when we upload the summaries in a file?
I think .rtf like Tyltalis did it is alright.

Tyltalis: It's no problem that you already summarized something, quite the contrary.
After a quick look, the summaries look good, bonus points for adding the tags for formatting the text.
Even more bonus points for taking one really long work. Good, job, recruit! o7


Only thing is, I don't think we need a 'Fantasy' genre. Because we're talking about Touhou-Fanfiction here, which is 99% Fantasy by definition.
Actually, a 'Reality' Genre might be more useful  :V


I guess we'll have to wait until Sakura has the time to make clear which of the works belong on the list and which don't.

But as that may still take some time, I'll ask a question to everyone:


Which fics have you already read and can remember well?

Depending on the answers we may organize the to-do-list for everyone accordingly.
(Unless Sakura decides that we will force everyone to read something new :3 )

SenSageUn already said he has read UD's work, so I'd like to leave those in his care.
Esifex seems to have read pretty much everything, so I declare him our secret weapon in terms of fic knowledge.



Lastly: Once summaries start coming in, I'll update the big list regularly (which means several times a day probably).
I'll mark all the works that have been done in blue in lime green, because it's a nice soothing color to mark our successes

Alright everyone, tea time is over!

Empty your cup of tea and line up over there.

I've gotten permission from leader Sakura to handle the assignment of works to each of you, and will do so right now.
That means you can ignore the question I asked before about who had read what, I'll simply assign more UD works to SenSageUn, the rest of us will be victims of randomization.
I'll of course look to it that everyone has about the same amount of work to do.

However, some things have not yet been cleared up, so stay tuned for changes:
-The file format we will use, please use .rtf or .txt for now, that should be best for everyone, or send the summaries to me or Sakura via PM
-The inclusion of some works. I will not include works into your lists that have still a 'Included?' Note on them, so those will be assigned later once their status is clear
-Handling of Short Story compilations. Leave those for last for now.
-The genres we will use. I suppose we can go with some standard ones for now:
>Drama
>Humor/ Comedy
>Parody (includes Crossover's I'd say)
>Action
>Romance
>Mystery
>Short Stories

NO >Fantasy genre for now
MAYBE >Reality if you find a fitting work.

As for genres I may have missed (which I surely have), simply make suggestions here and I will include them if they seem good.

An example for how the summaries are to be done can be found in the first post.

What I wrote above applies for the freelance summarizers as well, those who are not part of the team but want to submit work as well. It doesn't matter if we have multiple summaries for one work in the end, the more material we have the better our project will turn out.

I'll not add new works to anyone's assignment list, we'll deal with them once the current batch is done.

Also, this work reminded me of one thing: Please add >NSFW to the genres or information on the works as well, everyone.

EDIT: Oh, right, another information on genres:
You may use multiple genres for a single work.
There may be some that combine >Comedy and >Action, for example.

I'd say we try and keep it at a maximum of three genres per work.

It's pretty hard to see though, because by default the forum has a dark grey background.  I got to Mima's story and I thought it was some kind of spoiler text.

I like this little project though, I'll probably start reading more stuff when I know what's out there.

Well, it's only the preliminary list, there will be a completely new list when all the summaries are done, so the color's pretty irrelevant...... but, for the sake of everyone's eyes:
Time for color change. That should be better.
(Actually, shouldn't I have known about the problem with blue from the Black Stories? Silly me...)

This is exactly what the original intent was, nice to see it's working out already 

Though I have to disagree on the "little" project
