Funny, yes. Clever, yes. But all the avatars cycling around is seriously confusing.
It's nice, but maybe it's best suited as an option for some peeps to opt out of.

I just have to ask, are these random avatars just other people's avatars or other random pictures with them? A lot of them are so familiar and others unfamiliar, and if it was noted sometime earlier, I have a bit of a short attention span...

Yup it just pulls a random image out of the avatar folder on the site.  All the avatars are actually stored at http://www.shrinemaiden.org/images/avatars/ and it just pulls one at random from there.
