The square had 9 replaced with 0. Nine is 九 kyuu, while zero can be seen as "nothing" 無 mu. Mu and kyuu, you see where this is going :3

_{(To explain though: "Replace" was meant in the sense that I saw a square with numbers 1 through 9 as the "standard", so use of 0 through 8 is unusual and in comparison to standard 0 replaces 9. Not that the square is the same as the 1-9 version only with 9->0, that wouldn't work after all. Yay fishy logic :V)}

The lack of of a nine means that there's 0 nines, which 0 means Mu and nine means Kyuu. So there, having no nines in the magic square means that there's Mu Kyuu. And the fact that patchy is related to magic.
