The s key lets you search for hidden things. This is basically limited to traps and doors, the latter of which you're looking for.

A hint. While it takes more turns, hitting s before each move can help you find monsters and items *before* you step on them. m also allows you to move without touching things, useful if you've beaten up a cockatrice while not wearing gloves.
