Yuri & Yaoi: Your Thoughts
« on: May 20, 2012, 04:01:11 PM »
I decided to start this topic because a discussion on this subject got started on another forum I go to, with a lot of people unfamiliar with doujin works speculating on why people love or hate yaoi or yuri. I thought it might be enlightening to hear from you fine people on the subject.

Before we begin, we should define our terms:

When talking about yaoi and yuri, I'm talking about male/male and female/female sexual relationships between two characters. I do not mean flirting, feelings of confusion or longing glances. I'm talking about a physical, as well as emotional, relationship.

With that in mind, the questions:

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?
4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
6. Are there any other caveats you'd like to add?

1) Neither - It doesn't really bother me, but what does is that a significant proportion of doujinshi's displays the idea of 'homosexuality' to be rather about the sex. Which i personally find uncomfortable.

2) Neither - No bother, not as bad as above

4) Enjoy it = Story and Plot, Dislike = Obscene and Explicit and just about sex.

5) I actually feel fine about it, they are still people, nothing wrong with them, similar to that of Atheism and Theism, both conflict, but yet we can integrate with them. And that is cool, that one day that people don't persecute others of what their sexuality is.

6) nothing else?

As a proper pansexual deviant of many kinds of fetishes, let me be the first to post.

1. I don't dislike 'proper yaoi' the sorts that goes hand in hand with fujoshi culture, the kind where doe eyed square chested hairless men of various ages go beyond bros and into the romance section. I won't say I read it, but admittedly there is some enjoyment to be gleamed from them, I believe the first of my experiences in this genre came from a host of Rurouni Kenshin yaoi collection I have seen somewhere when I was young. It was in a way very much like 'At first i was like .... and then I was like <3!!!' Two men fondling each other openly is not my cup of tea, and I certainly do not enjoy the sight of men kissing in public, but yaoi much like yuri is a work of fiction and should be clearly defined as such. The content in yaoi is often more flowery than yuri, in a way that only men can enjoy the presence of other properly groomed, well mannered men. I wouldn't say I do not enjoy it, but seeing as trapping is merely another form of yaoi I can say... it is lovely when cute boys dress up as girls and get it on with other boys. (although the trap genre seem to be filled with mindbreak and rape doujins sadly, not much love in them save the worksafe ones)

2. Yes I love yuri, but is it surprising I find yuri boring and vanilla? I don't see much of yuri strongly other than a few notable titles that I really enjoy. The yuri quotient has to be paired with what I can only say as 'outright out of the closet and into your face, or I won't enjoy it as much. There are times when confused titles like Kannazuki no Miko tries to play the yuri romance line, and fails, and there are great successes with say... Hanabira titles, which are pro at playing the yuri card. It has to be... if I must put it in words: classy yuri. the kind of yuri to serve in a wine glass.

3. Since I clearly do somewhat enjoy both, I must say yuri brings out the flavor for me to explore yaoi. There are some **pretty good yaoi around if you are searching hard for it. For yuri I normally would read/watch because of the art. I would find it enjoyable and continue/discontinue. But without yuri I must say I would never have crossed yaoi.

4. I think the art matters the most, I would be turned off if the story was horrid. and most in this line of stories are usually too vanilla to mean something other than OMG Vanilla x Chocolat is so cute omg SAYORI'S ART JEGUS BONER. Beyond that it is just... dry. Likewise, strangely, the development of yaoi normally goes several layers deeper than yuri, probably because exploring relationships between men (drawn by women no less) seem to be a frolic and a treasure trove of complex... feelings (and men are normally not this complex)
As opposed to the almost single dimensional yuri couples... like Kannazuki no Miko's Chikane and Himeko (sorry Trance, I hate this pairing) are just... ugh. It is normally this thing about one fancy the other but we dunno how beyond the poorly written origin, and somehow one just ends up in one corner and goes moping because 'AWW XX DOESN'T LIKE ME SHE DOESN'T GET MY FEELINGS'

5. I am fine with them. I have plenty of gay friends, though most of them are closet gay.

6. Choosing one over the other is in my opinion impossible, without exploring both genres you cannot quite distinguish the enjoyment between them.

1. I can take funny ones. Male on male actions are usually hilarious . This includes physical sex jokes.
2. The good ones with good arts are used for fap materials. I don't actively search yuri books, but if it's inserted into a book that I'm reading, I'm okay with it.
5. Just don't do it in front of me.

Yuri and yaoi are both pretty gay.

1. It doesn't appeal to me at all. Active turnoff.
2. I'm okay with it, I guess, but I don't really need to see bodily fluids spraying everywhere and much prefer romance and gentle physical closeness.
3. I suppose yaoi brings out the stringer reaction in that I dislike it more than I like yuri.
4. There's something beautiful about close friends that feel they're physically, mentally and emotionally ready to become something even more.
5. Doesn't bother me a bit. If that's your thing, vaya con Dios.
6. The opinions expressed in 2, 4, and 5 also apply to opposite-sex relationships.

1. I don't particularly like it, although it's more an indifference/lack of interest than militant dislike.
2. I'm pretty fond of yuri. I'll leave it at that.
3. I don't think it's particularly fair to say one gets a stronger reaction than the other, since they're opposite reactions.
4. I find yuri relationships are usually depicted in a somewhat healthier and more reasonable light than heterosexual relationships in other works of the same caliber, actually focusing on the emotional component on the relationship rather than solely the physical element.
5. Real-life same-sex relationships are almost white noise for me; I notice them, certainly, but I don't really have a reaction to them.
6. I don't dislike yaoi so much as yaoi fans. I have some pretty close friends who are fujoshi and I'm fine with them, but the really obsessed people who go as far as shipping real-life actors and performers? Yeah... (not going to claim that this is solely done by yaoi fans, I've seen it happen in plenty of places and it's creepy regardless of whoever does it, but still)

1. While I myself do not partake, I fully support the rights of our fujoshi sisters-in-arms to create mountains of shameful boy-on-boy smut. They are a critical pillar of the doujin economy!
2. I enjoy the aesthetics of yuri but my reaction to it is kind of like AF's, it's just not that exciting to me. Even straight-up girl-on-girl action feels very softcore compared to the most vanilla boy-on-girl stuff.
3. Neither of them is my preferred material, so no.
4. The psychological aspect; the reasons for the attraction between them.
5. 3D PIG DISGUSTING
6. I'm not really sure it makes much sense to divide yaoi/yuri material from vanilla, it's just a matter of sexual preference. It's not like they're fetishes or something. How is the difference between vanilla and yuri bigger than the difference between yaoi and yuri ???

Just to address this: I'm not saying the differences between vanilla and yuri/yaoi are greater than the differences between yuri and yaoi. I'm more trying to get a better understanding of what people like or dislike about yaoi and yuri.

1. I don't really like yaoi cuz I'm not really into dudes! But it's not like an OMG GET IT AWAY reaction. I got used to seeing it around when I dated this one girl...
2. I like yuri simply because I like girls! And there are no guy bodies in the way either.
4. Just... Whether I like girls or guys? I don't really feel the need to think about it too deeply.
5. About the same as I feel about the drawn ones, though I guess I'm much more adverse to seeing RL-gay porn since yaoi guys always look girly anyway.

Porn isn't really something I "think" about... Though there are many things I'd apply this to. :V

Fuck your question format, I'm Purvis.

In general, I am totally down with yuri and yaoi. But let's break this down a bit. When it comes to le pr0ns, yuri is pretty much my preference over everything else. I don't like dicks in my erotica, I'd prefer to find both sides involved to be attractive, which I just don't do with men. As such, when it comes to erotic stuff, I don't care for or seek out yaoi at all.

HOWEVER! When it's outside of pr0ns, I cheer for both vociferously. Gay people need more representation in all varieties of media, and it's a barely explored territory in popular culture. I enjoy seeing it, typically, as long as it's not an insulting portrayal. Traditional society, which most media appeals to, frowns on homosexuality, so I love to see it portrayed and placed into the spotlight because it needs to happen more. I also enjoy the thought that it induces cringes and outrage in traditional society types, probably because I am a bad person.

Characters being gay means they're at least a little different than the standard straight whitebread, and it comes with a number of dynamics in regards to how they'll be accepted. As well, there is an aspect of casting off traditional society, if only in private. Gay romance is more unlikely to happen story-wise, and I like to see unlikely romance bloom (as long as it's not unethical pedo-esque bullshit). And a lot of times, I feel same-sex characters can compliment each other well. For instance, in Fate/Zero, I am actively cheering for Waver and Iskander to hurry up and kiss: partially since the historical Iskander was very gay and partially because they just seem to be a natural paring. I also do this for Sabre and Irisviel. As far as real life peoples go, I've also shouted "WILL YOU HURRY UP AND KISS!" to my friend in IM while we were watching the recent British Sherlock series that Steven Moffat produced.  I've been playing an Imperial Agent in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and desperately wish I could have romantic or flirtatious options with Vector, because he and my agent ended up being the super goddamn tight homies in a very short time. I suppose I favor yuri more, as it is a thing I find a significant turn on. But I think I cheer for yaoi couples harder since man on man romance is much more demonized in American society even if it is a total turn off to watch.

In short, I want it normalized, and it brings me joy every time it happens. When I play video games with any kind of romance options, I want a variety of options on both sides of the field. When I read books and watch shows, I want to see a variety of gay people in a variety of situations. I want to see them exist in more than a pigeonhole and outside of a few basic stereotypes.

I don't think I'd be disappointed by yaoi or yuri unless it was a really random out of nowhere unhinted  thing; on the level of really shitty slash fics; in the middle of an otherwise good and serious work. If it's an unserious work in question, then I suspect it wouldn't bother me in any event. Well, maybe if it was done to be hardcore and edgy in the middle of something bizarro style. But that'd be my fault for partaking in bizarro and not expecting that kind of thing. =[

So in the end, I am all for it. I don't actively seek out yaoi erotica, but if the story around it is good enough to intrigue me up to the point the actual sex goes down, I probably would not put it down or complain. In regards to yuri, I like it for both reasons.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
I read yaoi once for science! Well, not quite, but I did read yaoi once just out of curiosity to see what the hell it was like. It wasn't visual at all and I think there were never even any sexual organs depicted and that the sex was actually implicit, so it didn't actively horrify me, and it was a weird read compared to all other forms of pornography I had seen before. I dislike yaoi because I'm not into men, but some time after that experimental read happened, I found out that I really, really like that implicit style over explicit pornography, and that I tend to have a preference for stuff drawn/written by women over stuff done by men. It tends to feel a lot more passionate and I find that hawt over explicit drawing of genitalia for whatever reason.

This ties directly into yuri:

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
I initially disliked yuri because the little I had seen of it striked me as highly unrealistic, and perhaps it had been. It was only when I got into Touhou and finding stuff on it was either -faceless-male with little to no development-, -few starring Rinnosuke- or -yuri- that I started taking a closer look at it and found that I actually did like myself some yuri, specifically (surprise!) yuri drawn/written by women in which the feelings and passion seemed a lot more genuine.

3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?
Sex as an act is a really simple thing, but tying love into it without screwing it up hard probably requires some experience, which I'm pretty sure is why both yaoi drawn by women and yuri drawn by men suffer of the same lack of realism, and in that sense I outright dislike both of them. This seems to be a very hard point to get across to male yuri fans and female yaoi fans that keep shipping characters hard in very unrealistic ways and it really makes me dislike dealing with die-hard yuri and yaoi fanboys/girls in general. I wouldn't mind if they did it in private but when they talk about those ships when I'm right nearby I tend to go "uh, 'kay, can we talk about something else now?".
That aside, my dislike for very explicit yaoi would definitely be greater than that for very explicit yuri for obvious reasons.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
Yaoi drawn by men is something I've never seen and probably don't want to see given the tendency for men-drawn pornography to be really explicit, regardless of how well-drawn or well-written it is. Yuri drawn by women is something I'm pretty cool with as long as it's not horribly written. If I could choose between yuri and vanilla that had the same art and writing quality to them I'd definitely pick vanilla though, considering I'd like stuff I can identify with better, meaning there wouldn't be anything I actively disliked in well-drawn and well-written yuri, but I'd still prefer vanilla over it.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
I've known two male homosexuals for years, one of them being pretty much a childhood friend, and it's been pretty great knowing them. I had literally no stance on homosexuality before I befriended one of them and of course being the young asshole I was back then I'd pick on him for it until he got really mad over the issue one day, and I really appreciate that happening because I learned how tough it really is to be a homosexual when a large percentage of the population would like to burn you like back in the old times, and how to be respectful over issues like these. Knowing them pretty much helped me become a more open-minded person from a pretty young age which I think has had a huge influence in my becoming an overall better person over time.
So I basically want them to have the same rights as everybody else and I see absolutely no reason why they don't yet.

6. Are there any other caveats you'd like to add?
What the hell are people even saying at that other forum that makes you want to survey here?

In thinking about it, on the subject of 2hu in particular, I find that I appreciate the less-utilized relationship status between two 2hus who I happen to like together. As several examples, as I tend to see a lot of IkuTen stories where they don't try to get into each other's pants, I like it all the more when I find a story where they do. On the other hand, I find straight-up non-romantic friendship stories about Renko and Merry to be in criminally short supply. If any of you remember Irresolute Security Requisition, I enjoy a Meiling that's slightly quicker on the uptake than her Sakuya companion.

Ultimately, I suppose I'm looking for balance more than an inundation of yuri or non-yuri.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
I have no personal interest in it, since it doesn't turn me on at all. I fully support its existence, but I never look at it.

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
I certainly enjoy yuri. I think I'll go into more detail in response to question 4.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
Worth noting that I'm generally referring to simple pictures here. I almost never read manga. Anyway...
I'm generally not turned on by actual depictions of sex as much as I am by the emotional effects it has on the character's themselves, so I much prefer "soft-core" things that convey some sense of a relationship. I find that vanilla hentai is usually either completely bland or focused on rape/violence or some other abusive thing, which does not interest me. Yuri is generally more reserved and emotional, at least when it's done well. I could go into some of the more fetishistic reasons for why I like it, such as it being more "cute" or "taboo," but that might be going overboard.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
Assuming this is no longer referring to porn. I have no problem whatsoever with homosexual relationships. I might even say that I have more respect for them than heterosexual ones. There was a time when I believed I was bisexual, which perhaps has influenced my opinion, but I'd like to think that I'm naturally accepting of it.

6. Are there any other caveats you'd like to add?
I said it earlier, but I have almost no interest in sexual intercourse. That doesn't mean that my only sexual interest is some kind of emotion-based thing, but that is generally all I expect from porn.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
Pretty much uninterested. I watch some anime with yaoi relationships, and the show themselves are fine, but I find myself uninterested in the yaoi relationship.

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
Ditto

3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?
Neither... seriously. If I have to rate my reaction toward either with a scale from 1 to 10, I'll give a solid 5 to both.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
Since I'd say that my feelings toward Yaoi&Yuri is indifferent at best, I'll go for the reason why I would dislike it: Just the unfamiliarity with such pairings would make me uncomfortable.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
Used to dislike them, but it's a long time since I changed. Now I don't mind - Let them enjoy their time.

6. In general I'm pretty indifferent to them, but yeah I respect different tastes... I hang out with some people who like some shows with yaoi material. I wouldn't watch them on my own will, but when I watch them with friends, I'm fine with that, so I'm not like that person who goes "Ugh Yaoi? I'm outta here."

tl;dr - I'm fairly neutral to any Yaoi or Yuri pairings. I don't hate them, but I don't like them to the point where I would actively search for only shows that have either pairings in them.

1.  I couldn't really care less.  Guys are gross.
2.  I do enjoy this.  Women are not gross.

4.  Simple, because when it's not straight up porn or whatever, you have two people who care for each other.  Male or female with another male or female.  And I'm a sap for that stuff.
5.  It pisses me off.  Cause for some reason I'm attracted to lesbians.  Seriously 4 out of the 5 girls I've flirted with turned out to be lesbians.  Fun fact, they were a couple weeks apart, but I hit on one girl and then her girlfriend later.  But if I'm not interested in any of the people involved, I couldn't give a rat's ass.  Just don't do it near me, PDA's of any kind are gross and I don't want to see it.
6.  Don't know what a caveat is, so I'm going to say Pantyhose

1. I'm okay with yaoi. Not my thing, but I don't mind it. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. It just so happens that the few yaoi anime that I've seen were all pretty bad.
2. I like it. I mainly like the pink & fluffly and sparkles & bubbles and blushing & fidgeting. Between two girls, that shit's kawaii as fuck yo.
3. Indifferent about yaoi. I prefer yuri.
4. I like it if it's cute.
5. I'm cool with it. No problems here.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
Yaoi's something that I've found myself gravitating towards in recent years; before then I was mostly indifferent aside from the influence of my fujoshi friends back in Hong Kong (who would literally recite Sukisyo's Chinese name as a battle mantra). Unfortunately, most typical yaoi media seem to have this thing where the focus is on the eye candy rather than any sort of actual emotional intimacy between two characters. If I want to get my jollies off of a guy boinking another guy, I will gladly go find some trap doujins and satisfy myself that way. I won't even get into yaoi fanworks, barring the doujins (where some of them actually AREN'T half bad), but the Western fanworks such as fanfiction are mostly kind of that thing which tends to turn off a lot of people, at least if they didn't ignore the content in the first place. But I digress. Yaoi isn't something I feel particularly strongly towards, but then again it's the sort of thing I only read if I'm bored or feel like seeing some traps in action. Overall, I can say I do enjoy yaoi to some extent but not enough for anyone to call me a total fujoshi (I will admit I will go bonkers over yaoi pairings if I feel they're fitting or just plain realistic and genuinely workable).

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
Hooo boy. Here's the precursor to the meat of the post, arguably. I am through and through a yuri fanatic. You will be hard pressed to find a piece of yuri material I have not already devoured with my mind and my eyes. Yuri is one of the things I enjoy watching the most, many yuri shows which are objectively bad by written AND occasionally visual standards I will place over those that are actually good simply because they're yuri (Strawberry Panic! is probably one of my favourite anime in the entire world, and we all know how bad that is).  I feel so strongly about yuri to the point that watching certain anime or OVAs will drive me so full of emotions that I'll literally break into tears out of sheer positive emotion, and when I watch anime with heavy yuri sub-text but without any proper resolution or it was just a tease, I will become very angry about it (I won't slam the anime but yeah). Yuri art, yuri manga, yuri stories - everything, they are all things I enjoy perusing to varying degrees. Of further note is that I do not get sexually aroused whenever I watch or see yuri. In fact, I feel heavily emotional when perusing such materials. I have also played yuri VNs, so yeah they won't ever escape my grasp. In fact, yuri is not something I watch for excitement. It is something I watch if I want to feel fuzzy and warm and tingly. As a very affectionate person, I derive more personal pleasure from seeing such affection in yuri rather than the sexual intercourse often depicted in yaoi.

3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?
As I mentioned earlier, yuri definitely brings out a stronger reaction in me than yaoi. Yaoi is something I read to humor myself or maybe if I'm bored and bothered simultaneously I'll help myself to some trap doujins. But with yuri, it's something that I really do literally watch deeply as if it were some sort of masterpiece, and by the end of it I'm probably shivering from a sheer overload of emotion, or I'm crying. Sometimes both, but yuri definitely brings out the worst best stronger reaction in me.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
Since I feel ambivalently positive towards yaoi, I'll talk about yuri, which is what I feel far more passionate about. Okay, first thing's first. A lot of what I find enjoyable in yuri lies in the small interactions between the two characters outside of the scissoring. Even something as simple as the initial conversation between two characters before they get down and tango in bed can have me in an absolute frenzy, or even something as simple as a passionate makeout that again leads into the inevitable bedroom scene. The major flaw with citing an example like Himeko and Chikane in Kannazuki no Miko (No offense taken, AF) is that the relationship there was bordering unrequited - in the manga version,
Spoiler:
Chikane pretty much raped Himeko with a flute
, and it seemed to be solely there for the purpose of... Well, rustling people's jimmies (given that it was Kaishaku who did the art there, and his art is pretty much known for that). A well-written yuri story has something that's remotely realistic considering the nature of yuri. It's something where both characters have a give-and-take relationship going and their sexual intimacy is consummated properly.

It's not just the sexual interactions between the two characters. It's everything that ISN'T the sex that makes it more powerful of a relationship to me. The Sono Hanabira ni Kuchiduke wo OVA (2010) featuring Sawaguchi Mai and Kawamura Reo is the most recent example of a yuri anime that drove me to tears more than once upon several replays of this. During the 20-ish minute OVA, there were approximately 2 or 3 small sex scenes in them. However, in between, there were many moments of the two sharing tender moments with each other, and they even had an absolutely adorable quarrel (though in context it probably shouldn't be seen as such...) and you know what? It's not just the sex that makes me feel so warm. It's, as I said, the circumstances surrounding the sex that enhances the experience so much for me. It would be very accurate to say that I love it when yuri in question follows the shenanigans of two girls who love each other. To deviate a little bit from the definition, the true yuri experience for me cannot be achieved without the soft-core form - the shoujo-ai. A lot of the yuri that people find "dry" is most likely attributed to the lack of balance within depicting such relationships - there's usually either too much hot sex and not enough shoujo-ai fluff, or there's too much shoujo-ai fluff and not enough hot sex to properly consummate the passionate emotion that's derived from the fluff.

And for me, well, if the yuri is just the "dry" stuff anyone says, that certainly doesn't stop me from enjoying it for what it is. The romance between two girls in this manner is just something I find incredibly enamoring, incredibly romantic, incredibly sensational to experience, even as a spectator. I don't really particularly care if people call it shallow or "vanilla." To me, it's still an experience that makes me feel warm and nice inside, because of all the affection evident in it. Of course, there are exceptions to this, such as the aforementioned Himeko/Chikane dynamic (which was mostly Chikane pining for someone who just didn't fucking get it, and that's a fault of the anime because the manga has it pretty much differently, where Chikane is actually just a bitch). Even so, this just makes me think more about the whole relationship dynamic even more, and it makes me appreciate yuri very, VERY much.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
They are awesome and I am in full support of them, as long as these relationships are actually healthy and are not abusive in one way or another. I believe that relationships do not have limitations - sure, they can be painful, and are a very big investment, but if people put the time to reinforce them, then relationships can be wonderful things, and these wonderful things can be experienced between a male and a male, or a female and a female as well, instead of just the heterosexual couples we see all the time. I know several same-sex couples who are having a wonderful time in life right now and I am incredibly happy for them. I'm also bisexual, so I could just be a little bit biased here.

6. Are there any other caveats you'd like to add?
Yuri is not something I find sexually arousing, it is something I find incredibly mentally stimulating. It makes me happy, and that is ultimately what matters to me. Yaoi is usually what I go to if I want to think about something on the carnal side of things.

gonna be perfectly honest here, yuri doujinshis are pretty much my favorite. i'm obviously more into ecchi than other people in this thread

okay so maybe i'll elaborate some more. nothing quite turns me on like anime girls having sex with each other, but my viewpoint on real-life homosexuality is different(and more realistic) is i guess what i'm trying to say

1. Meh, it's okay. But I prefer it with certain characters cuz it's cuter.
2. Let's put it this way. Touhou/Cute Anime girls + Yuri = AWESOME.
3. I dunno. For some reason yuri turns me on but I don't get a...yeah you get it. :V  And vice-versa for yaoi. I dont even-
4. Yaoi: Yeah, enjoy only if it's cute. But that doesn't happen often. Yuri: It's cute (YES THAT WORD CAME AGAIN!) and great and I like it. Alice x Marisa FTW, bitches
5. What, do you mean actual humans in real life? ???
6. Yaoi hentai is pretty :colbert: ? Yuri hentai is :smug: ? I dunno i'm too young for that stuff :P

1, and 2: They're relationships, I can dig it.
3: I suppose I have a stronger affinity to yaoi being gay myself ::)
4: I've pretty much always d'awwed at cutely drawn pictures of gay people. It's that "oh look they are in love" deal with it.
5: I hate them, because I am not in one right now. Hahaha~ In all seriousness, me actually disliking doesn't make an awful lot of sense.
6: Hold on, let me google "caveat."

I really like the RenkoMary doujins so far, and the one you mentioned = <3
The wings of yuri one (now Ghostyuri) about them wanting to snuggle forever in bed (only 4 pages) was best~
dat said, yes, yuri is more attractive than straight men yaoi. but trap yaoi is more attractive than yuri to me...
OH NO

1. I'm mostly ignoring it because it is just not interesting for me, but I don't actively dislike yaoi in general.
2.  :smug: Well, let's say it is relevant to my interests.
4.  The one thing that decides for me if I like a yaoi or yuri manga/anime/doujin is how the partners interact with each other. When it comes to yuri/yaoi, I mostly prefer softcore material, because the focus tends to be more on the characters rather than on the sex itself. Also, it's fun to imagine what isn't shown.
5. Only thing I can't stand is when prominent people just show off their homosexuality to get publicity, like TaTu did a while back. (Though I'm pretty sure that was an act...) Other than that, I'm pretty indifferent to it.
6. For straight hentai material, I also enjoy the hardcore stuff, but my preference lies on well-written relationships and sensual material rather than pure explicit stuff. Such material is rather rare, unfortunately...
tl;dr: I prefer stories that include "making love" instead of "f*cking".

1. Have no reaction to it whatsoever.
2. It became contagious after what I witnessed from one of my relatives. So I'd say, I like yuri alot and all but not TOO into it.
3. Dunno
4. The artwork is what I'm usually aiming for, but the plot can't be like trash so I need kinda both drawing and story to be somewhat good. This case, I stumbled upon a yaoi scene by accident and I didn't know it was yaoi until I saw it on the yaoi tag. It was pretty interesting at first 'cause the artwork was well-done and along with the story, my reaction to it was :3 but when I learned it was yaoi I was like :ohdear:. It was pretty cute so I didn't mind. Later, I was introduced to yuri. But at first, I was like "What the hell am I watching?" then afterwards, I was like "They're gonna make love!" Kinda funny to say that I seen works with horrifying style then later find something similar with gorgeous style.
5. Totally cool with it. Known some homosexually people around my area. They're actually pretty cool and fun to hang out with, as long as I don't get involved in homo activities.
6. Yaoi is pretty much like yuri with the opposite gender, but I don't see much sense to actually debate on which is better.

1. Personally, I have no interest in yaoi.  Blame it on my testosterone or on my inability to comprehend rabid fangirls, I just don't get it.
2. I actually do like yuri, though I do prefer whatever series I have to actually have more of a pull to it than just mere two-girl sapphism.  A particular example I'd pull out is Iono-sama the Fanatics.
3. N/A
4. I usually look for the situations that go out there.  Iono-Sama had a queen with an entire nation full of haremettes.  Kananazuki no Miko had a whole prophecy/cycle of fate to it.  Pure Marionation deals with an android in a relationship.  If the art direction is especially good, that definitely helps as well if there's a pull in it.
5. I don't personally scout them out.  If a person wants to marry someone of the same sex, shoot for the moon, etc.
6. Another thing that sometimes gets to me is when shit gets TOO hardcore.  Where there needs to be a complete janitorial staff to clean up the ensuing mess.  Not so much of a turn-off as it is a bit of a bother.  Also, anatomical impossibility bothers me.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
I am not really particular with yaoi per se, but I do like boy fluff. It's really...um, fluffy.  I've had only 3 series that had men in relationship (or in a subtext) but I've never grown so fond as to crave for more.

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
Okay. I enjoy yuri...a lot. Period. I really can't explain why but I've been with then genre for almost...years now. Nothing pleases me more than seeing new series with a lot of subtext in them. Also, Touhou + Yuri = winx9000

3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?

Yuri brings out more emotions from me.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
Actually, I also go for the plot and how these two "anomalies" battle their way through love. Of course, that only goes for hard core "action" plot. Fluff give me all the "D'AAWWWW" here and there. It's more of their interaction and how the people around them looks at this.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?

I am totally fine with it.

No really, mama. I'm chill.

1. Do you enjoy or dislike yaoi? How strongly do you feel about that?
- Yaoi isn't exactly a like but, it's something I have a soft spot for. I can't really explain it, but I don't exactly rage at the sight of yaoi as much as I do with yuri. I dunno, it's confusing to think about but, I know I'm okay with it, but not into it.

2. Do you enjoy or dislike yuri? How strongly do you feel about that?
Short answer = I hate it. As anyone who knows me has seen, I have a vehement dislike of yuri, most of it stemming from a phase in which I just got fed up with seeing it everywhere. Before hand, I never really found it that interesting to begin with.

3. If you enjoy or dislike both, does one bring out a stronger reaction than another?
Yuri used to bring out a stronger reaction in me because of how much I hated it. I've chilled out about it over the years, but it's still a huge dislike on my part. I'm just not as vocal about it anymore.

4. Assuming the pairing you've witnessed is well-written/well-drawn, what is it about yaoi and/or yuri that makes you enjoy it or dislike it?
I don't really "pair" any characters enough to really seek out works written or drawn for them, so I'll just skip that and move on to the nitty-gritty.

I dunno why I'm okay with Yaoi exactly, but the reason I dislike yuri as much as I do simply boils down to oversaturation. I've been immersed in touhou and it's fandom for a long time and over that I've seen tons of pairings and yuri works and generally turned a blind eye to it, but eventually I just got sick of seeing the "same ol' shit" and thus my hatred of it was born. You could even go so far as to say that Touhou 'ruined' yuri for me since I can't bring myself to like any of it in any series at all. One thing that also miffed me during the time was how everyone always tells me "oh well, there aren't any options anyway" when in all honesty it's kinda the opposite if you just take time to think. I mean, I clearly don't have any trouble with it and no one else should either. I mean, just look at all the doujinshi with faceless dudes, it's really not that hard to make options since, apparently, there are none.

5. How do you feel about actual, flesh-and-blood same sex pairings?
I'm not really into either of them that much to like that sort of thing. If I was, I probably wouldn't mind either way.
