Eastern Otherworldly Gate is a fan project some friends and I are working on. Here are the details.
Story: Our story begins with a seemingly peaceful day. But not for long ,as strange gates start to appear in Gensokyo, bringing in hostile youkai with them. Reimu Hakurei, joined by the black-white witch, Marisa Kirisame, sets off to solve another incident and find the mastermind.

Gameplay resembles Legend of Zelda and Boktai during overworld scenes. You take control of Reimu and Marisa as they investigate the Otherworldy Gates that have appeared through Gensokyo. When you travel to an area where a gate has been spotted you will partake in two shooter levels, one being the journey to the area itself (e.g. Forest of Magic) with the other being the world within the Gate. Beware! Dangerous youkai lurk in the Gate Worlds and bosses await you as well. Fight back with your danmaku and spell cards. You will receive experience (in the form of the P-cards) and money (in the form of the smaller blue cards) when you defeat enemies. Defeat the boss in a danmaku battle and the gate will be shut for good!
As for spellcards, there are three various kinds. Blue Cards will improve and power your shots. For example, the spellcard Fantasy Orb will change Reimu's shots into yin-yang orbs. Green Cards will restore your health. Red Cards are bombs that will cause fatal damage to enemies. When a spellcard is used, it will need some recovery time before it can be activated again. Blue Cards charge the fastest while Red Cards charge the slowest.
Patchouli will sell spellcards outside of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

Woo! I'm being asked to help with writing! (Now if I could just stop being lazy and work on some of my own stuff, but that's another thing all t'gether.)
I'll be honest, I don't trust myself with canon enough to do fanfiction (which this could... /technically/... be considered), but I'll still give ya a hand. Hell, if nothing else, I can be an idea-bouncing-wall.

I don't really let fanon get in the way of my canon knowledge so maybe I can help with the story too. Also I'm quite good at thinking up background info for stories, so maybe I can help you there.

Not yet. We just have a programmer, character designer and a spriter.

What do you think about having the game be a horizontal shooter instead in an RPG style for the areas you fight in but being a Zelda style or areas you can visit? It was just an idea I had last night. I'll go more into detail.
When you are at places like the Hakurei Shrine or the SDM (where Patchouli sells her spellcards), it's an overworld Zelda-like style. When you go to places where a gap has appeared, it goes into a horizontal shooting style. The enemies you fight here give you experience points and money, and you can level up to improve your shooting and the power of your shots. So it's an RPG and a danmaku game in one.
That's my idea. Any comments?

Well, if you need a story writer/story consultant/composer (assuming you have a music program in mind), I'd be happy to help, but it looks like you pretty much have the game put together on your own, which is cool. I'm mainly here to say "this looks cool, I wanna play," like most of the people on this thread.
I had a very similar idea recently about an RPG made in Danmakufu... Great minds think alike, I guess. :V

Well, I can't do pixel art, but I can do music. Unfortunately, the best thing I have is a MIDI synthesizer that I can turn into MP3/WAV/OGG/etc and use with all sf2 files. If you have a better program in mind, I'll be able to learn. Probably. 90% sure.

I found a better youkai species for Taika. She fits as a Katawa-guruma (woman riding on a flaming wheel) rather than a Wanyudo.
