Title: Create.swf Adventures: Cottagesnagged (thread 2)
Post by: Dizzy H. "Muffin" Muffin on August 06, 2013, 09:06:49 PM
(previous thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,12275.html))

Prologue: Reimu Hakurei (aged 63) discovered an infant named Satsuki, and adopted her as her granddaughter.

Chapter 1: Reimu, knowing that a stable time loop involving a "mysterious youkai" named Meimu had been closed, gave Satsuki "Sacchin" Hakurei the task of finding "the Precious Object" in a mysterious witch's cottage in the woods (actually Marisa's) as part of Satsuki's training to become the next Hakurei miko. She would also prevent "the Ungodly Object" from falling into her hands. Sacchin travelled there, fought the transcended-fairy Cirno, and entered, stepping into a mysterious transportalizer.

Chapter 2: Marisa and Alice's biological daughter, Carroll Kirisame, fooled around in her house a bit because she knew her parents were planning something, so she didn't want to get too involved with anything else, until she got into a fight with her sister, Shanghai Margatroid the independently-moving doll. Marisa then tasked Carroll with acquiring the Precious Object and destroying the Ungodly Object in her own cottage, as a test for unspecified reasons. However, they were interrupted by a loading screen, leading to this:

Unfortunately, Muffin is incapable of accepting the command "mental breakdown", because he is currently experiencing a mental breakdown. He's even babbling "I need scissors, sixty-one" in witch-runes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puella_Magi_Madoka_Magica). But even if he wasn't, you can only take on the role of individuals who have had a formal introduction and a query as to what they would do first!

... And Nicolas Cage appears to be there for ... "Instant Nic Cage (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/instantniccage/)." Right, then.

Thank you for sending that command, Dimastine (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?comment=12090). I was actually going to show up after the mental breakdown regardless, but it's still appreciateed.

At least he managed to write a summary (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=csa02cottage#sum) of current events before he did his acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle. As he is curently indisposed, I shall have to command the narrative in his stead.

I do hope you'll forgive me. At the very least, I promise to be a much better host than a certain cueball-headed friend of ours. Not that kind of "host," either.

Many have asked me who the father was. My answer has always been: "The boundary between 'pregnant' and 'not pregnant.'" Anyone who isn't satisfied by this answer is merely told, "I manipulated it," which invariably sends them running.

With all the factors surrounding her continuing childhood, it's really no wonder she ended up as ... well, to call her a brat would be an insult to self-centered egoists. Everyone saw it coming when she travelled back in time to try to make herself the new star of the old shows. It's not that I spoiled her, exactly; I just hadn't given her all the things she needed when she needed them.

Just between you (i.e. the entire Outside World's internet) and me, I'm still not sure what they all were. But then, the fact that I ended up being a terrible mother is even less of a surprise than the fact that the third player-character is my daughter.

And now a young girl stands in her bedroom. It just so happens that today, the Tenth of March 2058, which is also the year 174, is the day she went back in time and tried to create a time paradox. Though it was ten years ago she was given life, it was forty-nine years ago that she committed the transgression that resulted in her current punishment, after the events of what Muffin insists was a terrible story-arc in what he still calls his main comic (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=thcomic)! Hee hee.

Hang on. This page was supposed to end with "and you?", wasn't it? Oh well.

You are Meimu, the Youkai of Edges! You have all sorts of abilities, including the opening of apertures, enabling you to travel long distances as if they were short! You are absolutely certain that you are the awesomest person around, human or youkai! Not that anyone recognizes this, of course. They all treat you like a bratty ten-year-old. Named Kon Yakumo. But you'll show them! YOU'LL SHOW THEM ALL!

In point of fact, showing them all was your plan for today. It was also your plan for 49 years ago, which seemed like a pretty good point to interrupt those stories. Gods you hate those stories. They're not about you! You aren't entirely sure why this infuriates you so much, but you resolved to do something about it! And you would've got away with it, too, if it hadn't been for little miss "b'duh b'duh I was never really on your side because you tried to make me go against my best friend," that backstabbing kirin! You know how it is! She cares more about herself and her friends than she cares about you, the important one! You had a perfectly good explanation for your behavior, too, but then you were forced to give everyone the real explanation. And then SOMEBODY (which is to say, me) had to go and take away your ability to travel through time, as well as your awesome Meimu costume.

WHY did I think it was a good idea to make such a long update, when that was what burned me out to begin with!? WHY did I think it was a good idea to insert myself into this!? WHY did I think it was a good idea to let Yukari anywhere NEAR ?

Shoosh, Muffin, only dreams now.

Ahem. You are now confined to your room, apparently for the next several hours, or at least (you assume) until they come up with a more ardurous punishment. What will you do first?

The one thing common to all these movies is that your mother expressly forbid you to watch them, not necessarily out of concerns regarding inappropriate content, but because they were all really really bad. You immediately torrented each one in the name of proving me, er, proving her wrong.

Unfortunately, she was right. They were all extremely bad. The Homestuck movies were the worst by far!

You've read the original Homestuck webcomic, incidentally. For some reason, all you can think about at the moment is that you wish they'd provided furigana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furigana) for that one girl who spoke Japanese, because "ten years old" is still functionally illiterate, since kanji (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanji) has a character for every word rather than for every sound.

You always act as though you have proven your mother wrong in the majority of cases, and that the instances where you failed to do so are rare flukes. You do this in spite the fact that you have never proven your mother wrong about anything.

(Right, I think I've got this now ...)

You put on Elevatorstuck (http://homestuck.bandcamp.com/track/elevatorstuck), solely to maintain your terrible mood. You intend to blame this on your mother later, even though you know perfectly well that there's no way this could possibly be her fault.

Your mother has locked you out of most of the internet, and the only website you are capable of visiting is an ancient webcomic called Summernight Dreamed (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/SummernightDreamed/). Despite being obviously and utterly terrible, you are convinced it has some hidden meaning which you have yet to uncover.

... seriously, Muffin? You're going down that route, of all things? I'm not even going to get started on how you worked in the phrase "bap supernatural heads" well after it was used in Cottagesnagged.

The Strongest!

Your mother has manipulated the borders of space around your room. Normally this would give you an edge, on the basis that it constitutes an edge, but her hax is stronger than yours, and your attempts to leave have been ... counterproductive at best.

Yes, exactly like that.

Nevertheless, you are unwilling to give up yet!

Unfortunately, your room is actually suspended in gap-space. It has no actual doors, because there's no reason you would need physical egress when you can just teleport in or out with your apertures, oh wait. Your mother might as well have placed a refrigerator and a giant safe in front of this imaginary door, and then wedged them into place with a wind instrument.

Electricity, internet, and Kawadec are only available due to hax provided by your mother. It has not yet occurred to you that "hax" might be a term your mother made up so that you don't actually think about what she did or how to use it to your own advantage.

It occurs to you that "hax" might be a term your mother made up so that you don't actually think about what she did or how to use it to your own advantage.

You bring up your Kawadec list which, in spite of your best efforts, still shows that other name instead of "Meimu." Everyone involved in punishing you for your little incident is blocked, because screw them. (You had to ask Yuyuko Saigyouji for her number so you could block it.) On the other hand, if talking to them is just an excuse, you could probably deal with a few words. Assuming they didn't catch on.

Otherwise, you're left with ... ugh. She is almost more trouble than she's worth. In fact, on average, she is exactly as much trouble as she's worth. If you decide to exploit her, and she decides to be annoyed, she'll probably say something that will make you want to hide back in your room. Of course, if you merely ask for her help, her advice will either be infuriating or stunningly insightful (you haven't yet realized that the infuriating ones are also stunningly insightful).

Or, y'know, you could just wait out the punishment, I mean seriously now~

You should probably block everyone else who was involved in your little incident at the time, but you have no idea what their Kawadec numbers are.

You are certain you've correctly guessed that of the ice fairy, however. One hundred percent positive.

There is a fallacious idea among Touhou theorists that if a special ability is defined as "manipulation of X" (i.e. "manipulation of boundaries" or "manipulation of ice"), then this automatically and necessarily translates to a complete and unlimited command of the aspect in question, given the right amount of creativity on the part of the theorists, regardless of that character's defined or demonstrated use of the ability in canon.

For instance, there's idea that Cirno (as a simple ice fairy, that is, not the changed version who exists only within the bounds of this weird fanfiction) should be able to produce heat, and lower temperatures to absolute zero, if she were to just put her mind to it; this is in spite of the fact that she is a mere fairy who would not have the raw power necessary to do either of the above. There's also the conjecture that Yukari Yakumo is functionally omnipotent, given that her ability is stated to cover "the boundary between mountain and sky" or "between night and day", and the number of things one could rules-lawyer into being considered as a "boundary"; this unfortunately ignores the many ... limitations which are displayed in canon, such as the ... difficulties in getting to the moon ... and ... Yukari is actually a bad example, because she is functionally omnipotent given her immense hax! You can tell this is a true fact because it is presented by the omniscient narration.

Anyway, let's skip to the bottom line: you're neither powerful nor knowledgeable enough to mess around with the Fourth Wall.

You let out a sigh which is as overly-dramatic as it is poorly-depicted, and call up the Shanghai doll. You have no idea who or what she really is, but she does have good advice on the rare occasions that you're inclined to accept it.

Well, then! You know what's going to happen now. Asking nicely has clearly failed, and you must resort to Strife. This is not a battle of magic and bullets, but rather words and wit. This is Strife Modus: Converse!

Shanghai, of course, cares not one bit for when her opponent is outmatched or unarmed. Honestly, you'd have better luck if it was a danmaku duel. But you've now forgotten that the Kawadec ruse was meant to be a distaction.

You attempt to calm down, and after only a single update, you stop doing that thing where you incrementally add a new dialogue image to the same Strife page. ... Er, if you're viewing this on one of the forums, you probably don't need to worry about that last part.

In fact, you know what, let's skip the whole Strife deal, it was getting tiresome and pointless~

Hello? Muffin? Are you there? I know I'm supposed to be the one updating Cottagesnagged, but you're pushing a week and a half with no updates, and your absence is quite worrisome! Was it something we said? Or did you just do another acrobatic fucking pirouette? Look, I even used a gap to obscure your apartment number before I posted it on the internet!

Hmph. I guess I'd best continue working on this, if Muffin is going to be hiding. I imagine the Maid of Heart wishes he'd had me doing this long ago! Yes, by the way, that's Muffin's class and aspect. He's the Maid of Heart.

Also, I reserve the right to take bits of a lengthy post containing multiple successive commands, and use only a few of with in a completely different order and meaning than they were intended to have. Moving on!

Oh my! What a flagrant disregard for the Spell Card Rules. That sort of thing is eventually going to come back and bite you, you know. Or rather, you don't know, because if there's one thing you're good at, it's not learning from your mistakes.

You might as well try to determine what kind of points you'll get for completing the game.

Well, these scores are certainly rather useless. It appears that they aren't even for you personally. Even if you were to try to claim that the stable time loop was entirely your own doing, which you do, you cannot avoid the fact that you weren't even remotely involved in rescuing Sacchin. Er ... you weren't involved in rescuing any foundlings. You don't actually know Sacchin's name.

Let's see, there Border Sign 「Edge of Darkness」, which is fairly straightforward. (It wasn't actually an intentional reference to the phrase "darker and edgier.") Then there's Edge Sign 「Edge of Hearing」, which is all about circular waves which fade in and out seemingly randomly, which seemed like a good idea when you came up with it in your head. You have a few Time Signs, but they only work in Gap Land, which you have no intention of entering ever again so screw them.

Also, at some point you appear to have come up with Edge Sign 「Youkai's View of Topology」, Life and Death 「Four Edges of the Netherworld」, 「Navy-Blue Generation」, and Evil Spirits 「Meimu's Spiriting Away」 (that last one is based on one of your mother's Spell Cards). You binged on creating all of them at once for no particular reason (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIaHN5TXRfI).

Your Spell Cards tend to use dark bullets. All of them have some sort of edge, of course.

You believe you know where the cottage is, so you just open an aperture and head on over!

My, this chapter has been shorter than the others, hasn't it? I think? Perhaps it's merely the lack of extra exposition needed. Or Strife, for that matter ? that took twenty-three pages in Chapter 1, and sixteen in Chapter 2 ...

You are Kon Yakumo, alias Meimu. You almost-but-not-quite arrived at the game your mother was initiating, when suddenly you were interrupted by the lights turning on and the arrival of her shikigami, Ran Yakumo. Of the other members of your family, Ran is arguably the worst to deal with. What will you do first?

Yeah, no. That might have worked 40 years ago, but way before you were born, Chen Yakumo went for a boost to her Maturity Attribute, which basically dumped her Cuteness in favor of Pulchritude, and also maxed out her Majyyks at the expense of Imagination. Bottom line is, there's no chance that Ran will succumb to unfathomable cutethirst any time soon. (In one of her less-hostile moments, Ran said she thought this was a vast improvement in every other way, which you can't understand because this works out all the worse for you.)

This would be bad enough, but having them in the same room together would power both of them up due to their shikigami bond, and even with the size of your ego, that is not a fight you're expecting to win.

You've made the perfect escape. That'll teach her to try to chase you down, because she just got schooled, and she passed with straight A's! No one will ever catch you, Meimu, the Youkai of Awesome!

No one will ever get the joke that, based on Name That Color (http://chir.ag/projects/name-that-color/), the speed-lines and letters for Kon on the last page were navy-blue, and the colors for Ran were indigo! (That's the Yakumo family's naming-scheme. "Yukari" means "violet," and "Chen" uses the character or "orange.")

Looks like there's two DLC stories, which are free because the creators have words to say about the other kind. Words like "D"LC and money-grubbing. Or the kind of words Carroll is specifically forbidden from saying.

The first one seems kinda neat, and looks like you could start playing it any time. The way they're hiding Mima's last name is kinda cheap and dumb there. Is that the Scarlet Devil Mansion?

It seems you can only play the second one after you've beaten Cottagesnagged. Looks like older versions of the kids you've got already, but who's ... oh right, Shanghai used Alice's "doll enlargement project" to make herself full-sized at some point, didn't she? You have no idea why they're standing in Yukari's boundary-background from Immaterial and Missing Power.

You experience vast sorrow because this page is basically directly referencing the fact that this will be my last Touhou fanwork ever, given that I'll never be able to finish all the other ones.

What, are you sure? I mean, we've already been wasting massive amount of time not seeing the actual game. It'd be like if the Homestuck intermission was at the end of act 1. Not to mention the massive amounts of time I've had to waste with my mental problems! THIS IS ALMOST A SECOND WEEK WITHOUT UPDATES! Wheeeee, I'm completely freaking nuts.

So, anyway, you just set both DLC items to download in the background.

You are now back to being Hakurei Satsuki, except when you get confused and refer to yourself as Satsuki Hakurei, because between the way the English Language is used so commonly along with Gensokyo's native Japanese, and the number of people who use either naming-order (Saigyouji Yuyuko versus Flandre Scarlet, for instance), you cannot grok anyone's naming-orders worth a damn. (The last straw was the mix-and-match approach of the Kirisame-Margatroid family.)

Anyway, you have just transportalized into a small room. It contains a variety of objects which you have never seen before. This appears to be your first task in the test of your skills as the new Hakurei Shrine Maiden. What will you do first?

No dice; it's locked. You aren't sure why you even bothered, really. If your adventure starts out in a small room with a single door, of course it's going to be locked.

On the other hand, after mulling it over a bit, you decide that if you hadn't checked, you're pretty sure it would have turned out not to be locked in the first place after several hours of screwing around.

(Little do you know that this is pretty much literally what Yukari did.)

You examine the Shishigami Nail. You have no idea what the fuck this is. Some kind of weapon? Which is also equippable in the Back Slot? You don't even know what you want to do with this thing.

Man. First there was "shikigami" (familiars), then there was "shinigami" (reapers and ferriers of the dead), and now something's called "Shishigami." You begin to suspect some sort of pattern.

You examine the Frandoll. It is the likeness of Gensokyo's most highly-skilled physician, the vampire Flandre Scarlet, whose primary ability, manipulation of destruction, can be used to negate destruction as well, and thus heal injuries (mostly).

This Frandre is wearing some sort of weird nightgown instead of either her nurse uniform or her Scarlet Dress. You wonder who made the Flandle, and why.

You move aside the lid of the donation box. There's no money; you're pretty sure this puzzle game isn't going to have that many visitors who are willing to donate anyway.

You do, however, find a piece of paper with the symbols Cross Arrow - Sideways-69 - Weird M on it, in addition to the text Kawa 6549.11. You consider whether to pick it up.

Oh well! You stash the paper in your inventory (after checking to see that the other side is blank).

These don't look like controls for a jukebox at all. They look like a solid crystal display.

Those bar-thingies appear to be individual buttons. You squint at the coordinates for a moment, trying to make sense of them, and then give up, dismissing it as irrelevant (save for the purpose of giving commands; odd numbers are for vertical bars, even numbers are for horizontal bars; a letter denotes both a row of horizontal bars and the row of vertical bars beneath it; "I" only includes horizontal bars, and "17" only includes vertical bars).

Oh. Of course it was gonna do that. Some days, you wonder why you even get out of bed.

Hot on the heels of that thought, you feel an unfamiliar sensation. It is a deep-seated desire to hunt down whoever made you get out of bed, and mercilessly ... uh ... merciless them.

Dimly, you realize that this must be how Grandmother Reimu felt every time there was an Incident. You barely even register the square symbol thingy on the wall there.
