The Hakurei Shrine in Gensokyo, on April 17th 2049. The time is 10:16 PM.

Something feels ... off.

Far off at the unfashionable end of a Japanese mountain range lies the old, decrepit Hakurei Shrine. Given the general state of disrepair, the effects of weather and so on, the evidence suggests that it has been abandoned for a couple of decades, give or take.

Which is a bit odd, because it was actually abandoned about a hundred and fifty years ago.

In truth, the Shrine is a gateway to Gensokyo, the Land of Illusion. The premise is simple: if there is sufficient active disbelief in any phenomenon in the Outside World, or at least if it passes into legend, it is possible for it to appear in Gensokyo, perhaps spontaneously. And so it is filled with magic and monsters and youkai of all descriptions, as well as a few species of mundane flora and fauna which are extinct in the Outside World. Books related to the moon landings and such things, too, if enough people start believing it was faked.

It was easily-accessible until Yukari Yakumo, the Mistress of Boundaries and Sage of Youkai, realized that as far as magic was concerned, Earth was going to hell in a handbasket. If nobody did anything, magic might completely die out. Thus, 174 years ago, in 1884 by the Outside World's calendar ? and so, the year is now 174 by Gensokyo's calendar ? she and the miko of the Hakurei Shrine erected the great Hakurei Barrier around Gensokyo, sealing it away from the increasingly-scientific Outside World. Magic is now preserved, protected, and hidden.

The Hakurei Shrine is inside Gensokyo too, of course. This version merely looks like upkeep has been a bit perfunctory lately.

And you?

You are Hakurei Satsuki. Or ... Satsuki Hakurei, you're always getting the name-order mixed up. Uh, your given name is Satsuki, and your family name is Hakurei. Y'know what, let's just call you Sacchin.

(As an aside for new arrivals, red text is for Japanese names in the Western given-name family-name order, and for text which is supposedly translated from Japanese; blue is for names which are already Western, and for text which was in English to begin with; and midori is for Japanese names in the Japanese family-name given-name order, and text which is not translated from Japanese.)

You are in training to become the miko of the Hakurei Shrine (the one inside the Barrier), under Reimu Hakurei, your adopted grandmother, who holds the current title of shrine maiden despite being in her seventies. Your duties will include maintaining both the Shrine and the Hakurei Barrier, resolving Incidents (peacibly or otherwise), and sitting around drinking tea. You are extremely skilled at that last one.

At the moment, you have completed all necessary chores and rituals for the time being, and you finished quickly enough that you now have a little bit of time in which there isn't anything particularly required of you. You're never entirely sure what to do in one of these temporal gaps; generally, either things just sort of happen so that you have something fun to do, or the time ends up entirely wasted. These two possibilities are not mutually exclusive.

Either way, right now you're pretty much free. What will you do first?

That stick with the paper-thingies on it is called a gohei (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gohei). It's good for two things: sacred rituals, and bapping supernatural heads. And you're all out of rituals! ... uh ... and heads.

You have two Spell Cards for danmaku, the magical martial art used by Gensokyo's inhabitants for ... conflict-resolution. They are called Dream Sign 「Evil Sealing Circle」 and Dream Sign 「Duplex Barrier」, and both of them are gifts from your grandmother. Of course, you can make danmaku bullets look and fly however you want, but Spell Cards are a good way of formalizing things, and either way, it just feels right for a shrine maiden to use bullets that look like paper amulets.

Ah, yes, the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orb. It is an ancient artifact, passed down since the creation of the Hakurei Barrier, with a formidable power for fighting youkai. This primarily takes the form of bouncing around chaotically so that you're just as likely to wreck the Shrine or hit yourself as you are to strike an enemy.

It also has a number of special abilities which can only be used by a blood member of the Hakurei clan. Unfortunately, as mentioned before, you were adopted.

None of these items have ever seen any major combat use, at least not in your own hands. When you've gone adventuring, your grandmother has always had you hang back, on the basis that a squishy human like yourself is in more danger than a really experienced youkai-fighter. You see her point after witnessing some of the frankly insane moves she's pulled off when facing some of her more dangerous opponents. It's disappointing, but you can see that she cares about you. She's always gone out of her way to make sure your life is safe and comfortable, at least when you weren't actively involved in your training at the moment.

Anyway, that's enough of that. It's not like anyone's being depicted without arms, you just had your hands behind your back.

Well, it's definitely a nice day out.

Your grandmother left earlier to meet with a friend of hers, a youkai named Yukari Yakumo. Come to think of it, most of your friends are youkai. In any event, she said she'd be back by lunchtime.

It looks like things will be peaceful until then. There haven't been any Incidents worth mentioning lately, and it's certainly unlikely that something will come up before your grandmother gets back; notwithstanding your training, only a complete idiot would try to attack the Shrine in broad daylight.

Enter complete idiots, stage left.

Fairies are notorious for 1. being stupid, 2. the fact that they do not die when they are killed, and 3. not fully grasping that death is permanent for humans, which sometimes makes them a bit more hazardous than they might be otherwise.

As far as you and your grandmother are concerned, however, they are also 4. weak enough that two fairies are easy, even for you. You're not that experienced in danmaku combat, but you would say that you're adequate.

(Introducing new-and-improved Strife Modus: AGGRESS! You may now submit combat-commands for the rest of this sequence. Commands will be chosen based on consensus among the submitted commands, the entertainment potential of an action and its results, and how easy depicting it in Create.swf would be.)

Relationships:  I guess the 'most of your friends are youkai' was meant to address that.  Also presumably you'd be friendly with Reimu's friends, such as Yukari, yes?

Also seems the only quest we have now is the intro here, ie: annihilate some fairly aggressive fairies.

Bah, it's not like ordinary fairies are worth a one-liner. Your cranial assault reduces each fairy's Health from "Just Fine" to "Kinda Okay," and you have no idea how you managed to avoid getting hit there.

Okay, the original version (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?comment=11083) was too long to fit into the title-space, but no more miko nice guy, it's time to bring out the Spell Cards! You briefly wish you could use some of the more powerful ones like Spirit Sign 「Fantasy Seal」, but they all require full use of the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orb.

The first fairy's Health is reduced to Kaput. The other fairy manages to avoid your aggression completely.

Incidentally, here is a handy-dandy chart of all possible Health values:

You switch to a forward-focus shot type in your assault on the fairy. Not as overwhelming, but it gets the job done. The fairy is kaput.

(You wish you could use Persuasion Needles, one of your grandmother's weapons which are non-Hakurei-safe, but she says you need to wait a year or two, citing the possibility that you'll poke your eye out with one of those.)

You sense something from the direction of your room, but you have bigger fish to fry at present.

Rin Satsuki is one of your grandmother's friends. She is a youkai belonging to the magician species, and she also possesses the healing powers of a kirin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qilin). You are vaguely aware that she has died approximately twice, the first time staying dead (or whatever) for thirty-one centuries. You have no idea how of any this works, but you this doesn't bother you that much; being nine years old is all about not having any idea how things work. You're ... basically friends, you guess, as far as you can be friends with an adult.

Yes, you've noticed that her family name is pronounced the same way as your given name; however, they use entirely different kanji. It's probably just a coincidence without any meaningful explanation, even on the level a Create.swf-user borrowing the name of a dummied-out character, not knowing he would eventually want to actually use this character.

Saigyouji Yuyuko is Yukari's closest friend. You are entirely aware that she has died precisely once, and she is now a ghost princess, presiding over Hakugyokuro, the local afterlife. You are fairly certain that she is one of the most intelligent individuals in Gensokyo. Nobody could genuinely be that relentlessly foolish and silly, and still command Yukari's friendship and respect in addition to ... whatever it is that a Princess of the Netherworld is supposed to do. Her appetite for shenanigans is matched only by her ... well, her appetite. You don't really know her all that well.

You cannot prove that either of these characters will or will not have any significant bearing on this story.

You're pretty sure that thing you sensed was a gap. You're given to understand that it's a sort of portal-thingy which Yukari, Reimu, and Rin can do for teleporting around. There aren't very many possibilities here.

You are totally not completely excited about getting a present out of the blue. Nope. Not at all.

After some messing and fiddling, you manage to figure out how to work the magical interface of the device.

You consider dialling random numbers, but that's probably not a good idea, and anyway the only random number you can think of is 9999.99, and it's pretty obvious who that belongs to.

My guess on this part is she's been around long enough and had a strong enough sense of self to evolve from an ice fairy to an ice YOUKAI, but that's just me.  Will be interesting to see what the actual result is though.

The problem I see with that is that fairies are a type of Youkai. Not 'made from humans' like Alice, but they're still a supernatural creature, and hence, a Youkai.

Fairies aren't youkai. They're manifestations of aspects of the natural world, IE, trees, grass, sunshine, rivers, etc. Not entirely unlike the Shinto beliefs of Kami.
At least, that's how I see them. Of course, I could be wrong.

Unfortunately, Cirno is not a designated playable character, and if even if she was, she has not had a formal introduction which culminated asking what she would do first. She is therefore incapable of accepting commands. You're stuck being the nine-year-old (and the eight-year-old and the ten-year-old, who ... have also not had formal introductions, so you still can't be them and there was no point in bringing them up in the first place, never mind, d'oh).

The bottom line is that instead of being Cirno, you get ready to dodge while she sends out a simple bullet pattern.

This isn't a video game, this is an audience-driven webcomic thingy! Instead of pushing buttons, you zip backwards and launch out a homing amulet combo, which is what those buttons would have done. This reduces Cirno's Health to Pretty Good.

THIS WAS A TERRIBLE IDEA!

Your Health is reduced to Kinda Okay, and Cirno's goes down to Not Very Good.

This is her cue to whip out a Spell Card. You've heard of Ice Sign 「Icicle Fall」, of course. This is not, however, the "legendary" version.

You go through the upper gap, and scream like a little girl (which you are) as Cirno starts to fill it with more bullets. This brings your Health down to Meh.

Quote
> [Aggress] Sacchin: Nine years old vs. first ever spellcard? PANIC BOMB! (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=csa02cottage0687)

You are now too busy flipping the fricking-fricky-frick out to care whether this is supposed to be some kind of literal recreation of Bullet Hell shoot-'em-ups (which have "bombs" as a gameplay-mechanic), or something which is more closely meant to resemble an actual Spell Card duel (for which "bombs" wouldn't really make sense). Uh ... this counts as aiming right at her as a counter, right?

If anyone's surprised by the way this turned out, you have a bridge in The Demon World (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Makai) you'd like to sell them.

Unfortunately, this game does not have a grazing mechanic, so there is no utility to getting really close to bullets, although it does make you feel kind of charged-up. You're also stuck using your Spell Card now that you've started it up, so you can't go back to using normal attacks until you bring Cirno's Health down to Kaput.

You bring Cirno's Health down to Kaput. (Your own is still at Meh.)

All the bullets (including yours) shatter into harmless green sparks.

The world is full of of supernatural phenomena. In fact, there are so many different kinds, it's hard to classify them, simply because there's so much overlap.

If you were to try to define "magic" (as opposed to power from the gods, or ghost activity, or just plain weird stuff happening), though, the definition would have to be something along the lines of "supernatural activity which is deliberately caused by an intelligent living being."

You know, sorcery and spells. The kind of thing witches do. Explosions and potions and whatnot. (Of course, by that definition, "fairy magic" also qualifies ...)

There's even a spell for turning yourself into a youkai of the magician species.

In the middle of the Magic Forest, there is a cottage that is, quite naturally, about the same size on the inside as it is on the outside. It has been inhabited continuously by a family of youkai-magicians for the better part of sixty years. Originally, it had only one inhabitant; but then the family expanded, first through marriage and then with children.

And you (speaking of which)?

> -=-> (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=csa02cottage0714)

You are Carroll Kirisame. You currently in the immature stage of a youkai-magician's life, which means that your body ages like that of a human. You are vaguely aware that your family is highly unconventional, but nobody seems to care, so you don't either. When you were seven years old, in spite of the best efforts of everyone around you, you became obsessed with the color pink, like all seven-year-olds (though fortunately this did not extend to your choice of clothing, which was being made by your mother until fairly recently); however, now that you are eight, you're thinking of changing your bedroom back to being white. Or maybe blue.

Your plans are currently approximately nonexistent; you've done your best not to make any commitments today, because your parents have been putting something together in hushed tones, and evidently want to surprise you. Eight-year-olds tend to be more perceptive than most adults give them credit for, although in their defense, your father tends to begin revelations of such things with "So, you've probably figured it out already, but ..."

Regardless, there's still probably plenty of other things to do which won't interrupt whatever your parents are planning today (yeah, you're pretty sure it's today). You're a magician, after all. What will you do first?

While this is no doubt an awesome idea, you cannot make any changes to your bedroom without the Grimoire of Houses, and your parents have expressly forbidden the use of grimoires of any description without their supervision. Your big sister has similar restrictions, which surprised you at first, but it quickly began to make sense the more you thought about it.

Gone are the days of working puny weaksauce magic using sorcerous triangles and mystic squares. You have finally learned to make pentagrams, hexagrams, and your latest creation, an octogram. Not heptagrams, though, because fuck trying to draw those particular grams.

(Your big sister used to have fun getting you into trouble by teaching you swearwords, but then you and your parents caught on and she recieved a lump sum of trouble. You now keep swearing within the confines of your own head, and so does she.)

You even asked your father, who said that nobody actually uses "those sevenagrams" because nobody can draw them. This was the sort of answer which you've learned to immediately disregard in favor of asking your mother, but she confirmed it.

The octogram is in turn surrounded by eight trigrams, which are arranged in the Fu Xi configuration because you can never remember how the more modern King Wen arrangement is supposed to go.

Yep, the Forest of Magic is still there.

You do not yet fully understand the point of having windows when the view consists solely of a bunch of trees, especially when 75% of the light you usually get is either magical or artificial; things like cross-ventilation or seeing the weather are sort of like secondary benefits to the fact that, in your understanding, windows are for seeing through.

Broadly speaking, irregularity results in a loss of efficiency. The more regular the shape is, the better the spell will work.

If it's not regular enough, the worst case scenario is that something explodes when it isn't supposed to, or vice versa. Your first attempt at a pentagram, which was before you'd even gotten triangles down, did not end well.

Your father works at KappaTech, and you often get a first look at the weird inventions they make there. Sometimes, they're even at the point of being useful and stable.

Fortunately, your Laptop Magicomputer is a solved problem, as it were. The only new thing is the parental controls, which allow your parents to monitor where you go on the internet, and automatically prevent you from visiting certain websites. The software's primary component is based on magic, which uses common sense rather than rules, and therefore KappaTech's advertisements boast a 99% success rate, rather than the approximate 1% success rate of nonmagical software.

You are completely mystified as to why you'd need such a thing. Are there websites with lots of swearing or something? No solid explanation has ever occurred to you, which your parents apparently think is a good thing.

You captchalogue it in your sylladex, which is another of your father's weird inventions. It is somewhat needlessly complicated compared to your inventory, but the novelty has three whole days before it will wear off.

You use the Anytime Anywhere fetch modus, which allows you to scroll through the captchalogue deck at will. However, it always seems to sort them so that the specific item you want is at the bottom, forcing you to scroll through the entire deck. A while ago, your big sister stole your Inventory modus, which enables you to access any item at any time no matter where it is in the deck, but you don't mind because it made a complete farce of the whole idea.

You find your mother with your big sister. (Calling her your "big sister" in English never gets old.)

They are working on some sort of swirly energy thingy. You don't even consider the possibility that they might be doing something dangerous, because your father isn't involved, and this is the middle of your living room with no sign of any kind of protection.

Shanghai captchalogues the convex crucible with her Inventory modus. Not the one she stole from you, she has her own.

You have not yet had The Talk with your parents, nor do you know that there is one to be had, and you are therefore only vaguely aware that fathers are usually supposed to be men; your complete ignorance of the subject, and your fairly keen understanding of your father's personality, have left you with the conclusion that either nobody told her she couldn't be a father, or she knew and simply didn't let that stop her.

(You know where Shanghai came from, though. Your mother built her as a doll, and then she and Marisa took bits of their own souls, smooshed them together, and then put them into the doll. This was perfectly safe; apart from anything else, souls can be split indefinitely.)

You ponder this question long and hard. Truth be told, you aren't entirely sure! You have a feeling, though, that she is making fun of you in some way. There's no paricular logic to why you think this, you're just sort of going by experience, inasmuch as she's always making fun of you.

Sure, why not? As far as you can tell, the way of life in Gensokyo tends to involve danmaku on general principle.

Your father starts turning down the blue flamey thingy, and cheerfully orders both of you to fight on other side of the house.

You chase Shanghai around to the back of the house, where she makes a stand.

Your duels with your big sister tend to involve one Spell Card each. The reasoning is that it makes it more exciting for both of you, and also (you suspect) because she tends to win more often early on, whereas you're better in the long-term.

HA! ... oh. Looks like you can only do one at a time.

Either way, the good news, which is also the bad news, is that she's finally started taking this seriously enough to use real danmaku.

This'll totally throw her off, you're sure of it ouch! Your Health is down to Shabby!

And for the cootie grass ... (You think it's supposed to be "cootie grass," but you're not sure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coup_de_gr?ce).)

Uh-oh, you made her angry. You also made her Not Very Good in the Health department, which means it's time for her Spell Card!

You have a bad feeling about this, especially since you don't know which Spell Card she'll use. Better act fast!

AAAAAAA WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE CURVY LASERS!? You can't even remember what she does after that in this Spell Card, which is never a good sign.

On it! You manage to bring her Health down to Shabby, the same as yours OH WAIT, you're down to Atrocious, which is just a hair away from completely losing it! (The fight, that is. You have already all but flipped the fricking-fricky-frick out.)

You wish you could use your previous danmaku patterns, but you're kind of locked into using your Spell Card now.

Ha! You can't fool ... uh ... you! Your father's Spell Card, Comet 「Blazing Star」, completely encloses her in danmaku, whereas you just charged forward with your pie going off aimlessly.

You brush aside all thoughts of doing anything like accepting Shanghai's compliments or taking her advice, because you're eight years old and you aren't going to consider stupid things like that over your post-loss sulk. You aren't even going to consider hugging anyone, because to hell with trying to depict that in Create.swf.

OK ... sorry about the lack of updates, I've kind of been feeling like shit lately and unable to do anything creative. I do have a plan for this next one, now I'm just debating about whether to release what I've got so far and then not accept commands until I'm done with The Big Thing, or wait even longer for an update until I'm completely done.

And then she explains and clarifies a bunch of stuff we already knew from earlier (http://dizzy.pestermom.com/?p=csa02cottage0658), and mentions that this will be useful if you ever decide to go resolve incidents with Sacchin. She stops your father from using the phrase "weird puzzle shit" even though everyone knows you already know the word.

She doesn't tell you that Sacchin will also be there, though. You remain entirely ignorant about the presence of the other player character.

You accept and captchalogue the Bento Box from your mother. It looks like it contains enough for one meal, which implies how long this is meant to take. Assuming your father didn't do some kind of dimensiony thing to it, but you can usually tell when that happens, and it doesn't look like she did it this time.

Unfortunately, there's a loading screen in the way. It looks like the act of taking off and flying away isn't really finished, and you'll have to wait a little while before you can even send in any new commands! Whoops.
