[WC3 - Night of the Dead: Zombie Survival Maps]
« on: September 13, 2011, 04:00:45 PM »
Foreword

I've decided I should probably make a thread involving a few zombie maps I play, seeing as there's at least small group of people who do enjoy it and also due to that darn Youkai Jesus and Trance making me feel as if I should do it with their own threads. As such, this thread involve some of these maps I have here and will expand on.

NIGHT OF THE DEAD: AFTERMATH

Background

27th September 2037 - A mysterious viral outbreak in Boston four days before led the city to shut down and the entire state of Massachusetts to be placed under quarantine. Many early Marine Corps elements sent to facilitate the evacuation of the city were wiped out. In the 36 hours prior the events of NotD Aftermath, the US Military has been gaining an upperhand and the outbreak is steadily brought under control. With state borders secured, Marine Expeditionary Units begin patrolling the outlying towns for contamination. Events take a fateful turn when Echo Company finds itself in the middle of the heaviest concentration of unknown entities.

About the Map

Night of the Dead: Aftermath is a custom cooperative survival map with many elements of a RPG, on WarCraft 3. Players take the role of a marine in 3rd Platoon, Echo Company of the United States Marine Corps in order to combat the endless swarms of a zombie (technically not a zombie, but that doesn't matter) outbreak, selecting a  Military Occupation Speciality (MOS) each with their own unique group of skills and benefits, and completing missions all the while surviving the onslaught of zombies of all caliber. The map has a steep learning curve and unless you have significant experience in maps such as this, it may take some time to fully understand and grasp how the map works and plays.

NotD:AM features a rank system using save/load codes generated in the game itself. As the players complete missions and combat zulus in multiplayer games (not single player), they earn experience which they are able to save to the name used when playing the game. At certain intervals of experience, players are "promoted" and receive new benefits, such as unlocking new MOS to play as, sidearms, pets and such. However, with such benefits also comes drawbacks: higher experience means the game's squad rating is higher and the difficulty of the game also increases, where new and more challenging enemies spawn, new events occur and as one gains ranks, decrease in HP. Medals are also earned through the game, through various means and provide small stat benefits, and are mostly just like achievements.

The map features many custom triggered skills for each MOS and enemy alike, ranging from cauterizing injured marines to obliterating enemies in artillery fire. Items are crucial to survival and featured prominently, such as various guns and medical kits, with some items being required in various missions. Enemies range from the standard zombie to the gargantuan Prometheus as well as disillusioned marines, all ready to exterminate the players, while allied NPCs include civilians that must be evacuated and other brave marines that arrive to reinforce players, some of which can be controlled by the players.

Finally, the map plays out in three chapters, the beginning of which is introduced with a brief scene declaring the chapter. Each chapter contains different missions and events that have a chance to occur and each is filled with different challenges. There are also known to be different several chapters that can occur as Chapter 2 and Chapter 3.

Links and Information

The download link for the map, if you don't have it is below:

NotD Aftermath 1.5d Beta 8 Download Link

Or you can get it from, as well as play it on ApharmdB's host bots on the MotK PVPGN BNet server (Sakuya and Reisen), where the map name is "notd" to load it onto to the bots for playing. More detailed information regarding the MotK PVPGN BNet server, the usage of the host bots and the myriad of other useful and helpful resources provided by some awesome people and Pesco can be found in this thread and ApharmdB's list of maps available on the bot, as well as download links to other maps are here.

At any rate, enjoy and lets see if we can play a few games together.

NOTE: I almost forgot to say, but the development of this map ceased a few years ago, so don't expect any new releases.

I decided to also include some other maps like NotD:AM in this thread too.

S.W.A.T: AFTERMATH

Background

Despite the courageous efforts of the original S.W.A.T. team, the government resorted to nuclear detonation in a vain attempt to end the infestation of Raccoon City. Not only did the blast fail to keep the zombies down, but the intense city-wide radiation bestowed new mutant abilities unto the minions!

Bravo team was testing new, advanced equipment in a secret bomb shelter when the explosion devastated the city. You are a member of this team, and your squad now has the daunting task of eliminating this threat once and for all. But saving the city requires more than shooting undead.

A scientist in a secret lab under the original S.W.A.T. Headquarters is working on an antidote for the virus using the components recovered by Alpha team. You must prove its effectiveness by curing and evacuating civilians. You must also prepare the city for external aid by restoring power and reducing radiation. Successful completion of these objectives will save the city and possibly the nation!

About the Map

The sequel to SWAT vs Resident Evil, SWAT: Aftermath is another cooperative survival map, where the players must select a class and survive wave after wave of zombies in the irradiated and abandoned Raccoon city through teamwork. Much like NotD:AM, the map has a steep learning curve and takes time to get used to. The difficulty scales according to the number of players, so from playing the map solo to playing with a full house team, the difficulty is adjusted in conjunction with the five difficulty levels that players are able to vote on in the beginning of the game, which range from the simple and easy Normal mode to the apocalyptic Extinction mode which is true to it's name.

Like NotD:AM, the map features a save/load system, but not just for ranks. Players are able to save their entire hero, which they are able to build into unique heroes through the selection of traits, specializations and talents, each of which provide different benefits to heroes, and the class of the hero as well. Note that save codes are generated at the completion of each game, and the higher ranks are only attainable when the player wins the game at a certain difficulty. Ranks in SWAT:AM unlock new abilities and commands that players are able to use, improve various items and units, as well as unlock new difficulties. The medal system present in SWAT:AM is not unlike that in NotD:AM, though their effects are only prevalent in Extinction or Nightmare mode.

SWAT:AM has players completing three distinct missions all the while surviving an endless wave of zombies that arrive from everywhere in the ruins of Raccoon city: players must reduce the radiation level of the city by constantly finding and destroying radiation fragments, restore power to the city by fixing the damaged generators, and when the antidote is available, convert zombies into civilians which must be evacuated. Extinction and Nightmare mode have also other requirements in order to win the game, which will prove to be difficult to overcome.

Skills in SWAT:AM include anything from the Field Medic's healing and support skills to the devastating explosives and mini-nukes launched by the Demolitions. However, one skill that is crucial to all players in the game are Nanites, which every hero begins with. Nanites form a near impervious shield around the player and this one skill prevents the hero from being slaughtered in a couple of attacks, draining mana to block most hits against them. Items in SWAT:AM include bandages, stimulant drugs, batteries, generators and the powerful ATME items, all of which are found inside crates inside buildings, automated black markets and the laboratory. Each item requires the player to have a certain intelligence to use them, hence some complex items cannot be used by some players.

Links and Information

The official site for the SWAT series has more detailed information about the map itself, including details about each item, each class, each rank and download links for the map. It also has the original map, SWAT vs Resident Evil.

You can find some information contributed by SWAT:AM players in the Wiki which can be found here.

The map is not featured on ApharmdB's bots at the moment.

Undead Assault II

Background

February 9, 2058.
Two years ago the virus was released in Boston and spread like wildfire. Within weeks it had spread all throughout America. The United States took full military action to contain the contamination. Deploying Marines around the world, control seemed within humanity's grasp. Three months later, with operations in full swing, all hell broke loose. The virus began to mutate, evolving those infected. Untold horrors swept through the Earth and slowly global armies began to fail. Now, two years later, you have been deployed somewhere in Minnesota on a routine patrol mission...

About the Map

Note: This is information is based around Undead Assault II v1.5b Beta 9.

Undead Assault II is another cooperative survival map based on the earlier NotD:AM map, and as such shares many similarities, particularly with various missions and the MOS classes that are available. The game play also has similar elements to it's predecessor, where the players need to survive waves of innumerable undead and mutant hordes all the while completing different missions. The map offers a multitude of difficulties and modes, ranging from the basic Recruit mode to Umbrella mode, each with their routes the map play out for the players. The learning curve is quite steep, so it may take a few games to learn to play it effectively, particularly on higher difficulties.

The map features a save/load system for saving experience in a style almost exactly like NotD:AM. Ranks allow players access to more abilities and classes, as well as increasing the strength of the players' normal attacks, but also providing a small HP penalty. Note that experience for ranks can only be gained in multiplayer games, though they can be loaded in single player (but not saved). One key difference between NotD:AM and UAII is the ability for players to be revived: at certain intervals any players who were killed in action are brought back (without items), and the Navy Corpsman is able to resurrect allied players.

The most interesting feature of Undead Assault II is the Umbrella mode difficulty - in this special mode, the players are forced to not only battle the hordes of undead mutants that plague the area whilst completing missions, they are hunted by the covert special forces commandos of Umbrella Corp, the one behind the outbreak, which culminates in a final showdown between the forces of the United States Marine Corps and Umbrella Corp. With armaments and skills similar to players' marines, the Umbrella soldiers are some of the most dangerous foes in the map.

As with the other maps, Undead Assault II features a multitude of custom items and abilities for the players to manipulate in various situations, some of which are only available for and used in various events and missions.

Links and Information

The official site for Undead Assault II contains a lot of information regarding the map, including the Wiki that has several guides, articles and tips which are useful for all players to read.

Links for the map:
Undead Assault II v1.5b Beta 9
Undead Assault II v2.0 Beta 3

NOTE: 1.5b Beta 9 is posted here because it is compatible with WarCraft 3 Patch 1.24 and above, as opposed to my version of 1.5b Beta 7 which is not. 1.5d Beta 9 is unofficial and has a few changes which I dislike, but it will have to do.

NOTE: 2.0 Beta 3 is a complete overhaul with the entire map being almost changed completely. But due to a myriad of bugs and issues associated with the bug, I do not really play it. Play it at your own risk.

The map is not on ApharmdB's host bots Sakuya or Reisen, thus if you want to play it, download and host it yourself.

Infinity. What. Zombie section.

<Nietz> Anyway, sex toys alone won't come up to 11k.
[18:48] <Warma> There must have been a new depth, where you've sunk as a person. Then you dug through that.

It's not a very deep game and is actually pretty easy, as long as your teammate doesn't master spark all your asses from behind, so we completed it last night on easy modo (-df1 difficulty). Expect some bugs, one of which is Cirno's activation of the flare resulting in the use of her ult, even if you click on the button for the flare skill instead of using the hotkey. The best part of the game is actually the dialogue (especially Alice's lines) and some of the wtf-events (the spiders... oh god the spiders...)

On the other hand, I do have the actual Touhou NotD map here, but unless you have an active connection to HF, the map cannot be read by WC3.... :(

Master Sparking zombies is pretty fun for a while though :P
