I was trying to figure out why the hell the game kept inputting directionals, namely up and/or left with no input on my end.

Apparently my controller was the problem so I unplugged the usb. I did not have this issue with any other game in my lifetime but it's not like I play shmups with a controller anyway! Pretty looking game.

Well, 1cc'ed with Reimu without too much trouble on normal. Went into stage 6 with 8 lives. Extra kills me though.

Yeah,those are coffins and crosses.The sisters are not afraid of crosses.
Some spellcards may be difficult to capture without translation.
For example,the third card is "Iron Maiden" and mimics the same torture device in history.
The first survival card is "No.13 empty coffin", one of the coffins will not burst out roses.
By the way,crosses only have a small hitbox at the cross point.

Well this is definitely more intense than the main games in terms of difficulty. Flashy stuff.

Took a bit just to get the stage down (mostly). The extra boss however is another matter entirely. Wouldn't mind having that OST, has some nice remixes in it.

Edit: Just bit the dust to said survival on attempt 3. It's hard to wrap my head around some of these attacks. I now have the stage down almost entirely minus the first spell first boss and second boss both attacks (and that golem statue thing). Provided I don't screw up which is common I can get to the extra boss with... 4 lives 0-1 bombs?

In fact, I think this game isn't as good as it looks. The bullet pattern looks like fireworks rather than danmaku.
You see nothing and have no space to dodge. The only thing you can do is to cast bombs regarding those rediculous danmaku patterns.

Jesus some of these patterns are hell. It's like my dodge "button" is X, rather than dodging at all. That first coffin spell is like Murasa's Phantom Ship Harbor from UFO on crack.

The game crashes on me when I try to start the game after selecting the difficulty and the character.

First, I get this error message:

I got a similar error and I'm not sure what causes it exactly.  I think it may have something to do with the config though, since it only happened after I opened the config and I had to do a fresh unrar to make it work again.  I just changed the settings through the ini instead to be safe.

Well, I solved my problem by using LocaleSwitch (http://bbs.sumisora.org/read.php?tid=10932331) to force-change the locale of the game to Simplified Chinese (zh-cn). Note that it's entirely in Chinese, but it should be simple enough to figure out.

I assume setting the locale in Windows to Simplified Chinese does the trick as well.

This extra stage is infuriating. That coffin timeout destroys me and I can't keep track of the empty coffin. To make matters worse it's not even set position so if you don't keep track of the empty coffin well... hope I got bombs in stock, or unless I get lucky and it points at my location.

Edit: The game itself is pretty easy for me to 1cc on normal. Second time around I did Marisa and finished with like 7 lives. The game gives so many resources. Also one of Remilia's cards is kind of hard on the eyes. SO MUCH RED. I never even lost a life or bombs until halfway during meiling.

Edit 2: That is until I did Sanae. She took so much longer to get through bosses, especially stage 6. Shot type isn't very strong.

Also I think Extra might just already be unlocked. Either that or you just need to clear the game, not necessarily 1cc it.

Sanae is kind of a pain to use. I 5cced the game with her a couple days ago, then tried again with Reimu today and 1cced it on the first shot without restarts.
I'm not sure what to think about this game!

Well, you must have missed with many bombs.
Unfocused bomb of Sanae only costs 3/5 bombs.

You would be right about that. I think it was partially because while I think there is a deathbomb timer, it's painfully short, so I died to stuff I would normally be able to deathbomb... if I was dealing with the typical deathbomb timer. Either that or my reflexes are crap. :V
Meanwhile with Reimu I kinda managed to not have a megaton of "empty lives" (AKA lives where I fail to use all my bombs), so I was able to get through more.

Well I can't say I've ever seen that happen before but I did notice one thing. My Patchouli has extra unlocked and she never 1cc'ed. Everyone else for me had to 1cc.

What is the difference between LocaleSwitch and Microsoft Applocale? I tried to use Applocale but I always get that exception in the first boss.

I have Japanese locale and it plays perfectly fine.

Patchouli is also pretty easy to use if you can micromanage the charged shot.

LocaleSwitch, from my experiences with it, doesn't use AppLocale as a base, but rather uses its own executable (LSC.exe) to force-switch the locale. It also seems to handle locale switching better than AppLocale (e.g. AppLocale would still display garbage text instead of Japanese in more recent versions of Marine Benefit, whereas LocaleSwitch actually does display the text properly).

But....let's not stray too off-topic.

Anyway, it seems that whenever I use my gamepad, the game thinks Left is being pressed, even though I don't even move the joystick to the left. Don't have that issue with any other game, so it seems the game's handling of joystick inputs is too sensitive.

I'm really enjoying the extra stage, I managed to get to the first survival card so far. While the stage portion and nonspells aren't too hard, I find most spellcards completely insane :o

I found the hard mode 1cc pretty epic too.

BTW it seems that you do some graze milking when you use a bomb. With 2 bombs I got 1500 of graze points with Meiling.

Eh that's right, managed to get 13K graze (http://i.imgur.com/C6A5NGj.png) from Meiling's extra nonspell.

I think it's a pity that score is mostly made from speedkilling bosses. You get nothing from graze, which is ok, since MoF doesn't have a graze counter, but even the point item value is ridiculously low :ohdear:

Although I don't think I really deserve it as Patchouli seems to be kind of overpowered.

Anyway this is a pretty cool game and lunatic is kind of ridiculously hard lol.
If I were to make a suggestion if would be that the addictive blend and shininess makes it sometimes hard to see the bullets. Remilia's opener is a very good example of this.

Simply beautiful, words cannot even explain how much I love this, I see it as a beautiful remake of EoSD. Fantastic job!

Now if only the boss didn't kick my ass so bad. Like seriously the coffin spells destroy me. One I can't see the fireballs most of the time due to a screenfull of death and the other I can't track the empty coffin else I risk clipping something else.

And what's up with that spell that throws out volleys of 3x red / purple laser crosses? I cannot wrap my head around that one. Think it's the one before the coffin timeout.

I think I'm gonna try scoring in this game, here's a few notes:

- Clearing boss attacks quickly gives a lot of points, so it might not always be a good idea to make them last for graze
- The bonus for clearing a stage without dying is also high, so dying for bombs doesn't sound too good either
- Bombing right before ending a nonspell doesn't make you fail a spell, so that can be used to milk some graze from a spellcard without losing the spell bonus
- Nix's midboss non is supergrazable on normal and lunatic (probably easy and hard too, didn't check though)

This game is AMAZING. It's easily the best Touhou shmup fangame I've played in recent memory. Barely got a Normal 1cc on my first try, was surprised by its difficulty compared to most official games. Extra is currently kicking my ass, but with how good the music is I couldn't care less.

Speaking of the music, I just finished recording the soundtrack and am about ready to upload to youtube. Does anyone have translations to the track names or at the very least a way for me to copy paste the Chinese characters? I'd hate to misrepresent the titles.

Edit: And I just noticed someone said the OST is going to be released in the summer. Should I just wait until then?

You can always just type the English part of the title and then edit the video by copy/pasting the Chinese characters when they release the OST in summer.

Or ask cuc to do it for you. He is Chinese.

By the way, I think this game is better than anything from ZUN :V

Flan... so evil.... finally can get through the stage portion without dying, but all of flan's spellcards just soul crush me. It feels like I'm bombing through all of them.

Which still gets me to the survival cards with ~2 lives and a couple bombs, but I have no idea how the first one works, so I'm pretty much dead before I can do anything with the 2nd.

One of the 13 coffins doesn't get loaded with roses. You need to find that coffin and avoid the other 12 shooting roses.

It's not static. Coffins will not be the same every run. Even if I look at the coffin I may not be able to keep up nor can I move around without accidentally clipping a cross bullet in the process.

I'm having problem with the replay system! It seems like my replay didn't save correctly and actually plays wrong (like, my character doesn't dodge stuff I dodged, and so on). Anyone else has experienced this?

What an amazingly mediocre game. Easy streaming stages, messy boss fights, pointless scoring system, all made up for with shiny graphics and passable music.
The overall gameplay feels like it was made by someone who hasn't played a shmup besides touhou on normal, and it really shows in the harder difficulties (not that there's a difficulty besides lunatic) and extra stage.
Glad to have had another shmup to play for a bit, but there's not much to come back to!

As for balancing and game design issues the devs will get better as they make more of these games.

I feel like translating parts of it (are the themes translated yet?) but I have no experience in translating stuff whatsoever.  :V

Edit: Wow. Most of the English part of the themes mean roughly the same thing as the Chinese part.

Mostly literal translation of the Chinese part with alternatives/other meanings/omitted literal meanings in "( )" and translator's notes in "[]":

Sweet! I didn't upload the themes yet cause I noticed problems in the recordings of them. I'll have to do it over again from scratch but finals are coming up so it will have to wait until those are over.

I had the same problem as fsvgm777 until I used applocale but then I got a message saying unsupported 16-Bit Application

I have even used Dosbox to try and fix it but it says that it has an error opening up shortcuts (I had to create a shortcut from applocale because if I opened the game up with Dosbox then the first error would pop up)

ok I fixed all my problems with starting the game but the config will not change even if I use applocale or Localeswitch.

it says :

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediatly.

Input sting was in incorrect format.

try these: check it with localeswitch instead because a few people have problems with that, check if you are using the shortcut that is created by the program (this was my problem so for me I had to go to the starX folder and create a shortcut for the game from there), also if you have xp or vista open the xna and net framework, and check the net framework with net framework verifier and net framework repair tool (both endorsed by microsoft)

if that does not work then just try to re download it.

Apologies for reviving this thread. I was informed earlier that reviving fangame threads is the better option than starting up an entirely new thread. Otherwise, I'm not sure what to do with this information other than starting up a new thread...

Version 1.03 of Fantastic Danmaku Festival was released earlier this month (if I'm reading the dates correctly). What version 1.03 includes are new spellcards (similar to last words or a spell practice mode if I had to compare this to anything), staff credits, and achievements. The main attraction I found (due to the language barrier) are the new spellcards.

Both links in the blog lead to pan.baidu. The first link in the developer's blog leads to the DLC. Supposedly, I think you can just transfer the files from that to the game folder, but I had no luck running the game doing this (I'm bad at solving computer problems so I took the other option). The second link leads to the installation file. If you had Fantastic Danmaku Festival previously installed, you have to uninstall it if you want to go through this method. My guess for the problems I had with the first link is due to the installation for version 1.03 from the second link creating a new folder in the StarX folder when I installed it (and as a result, new data for the game to use). Just mentioning it in case someone runs into a similar problem. There is a post with more information on the DLC posted a day after the link I provided, but I'm not sure if the problems addressed in that are what I encountered based on what I get with google translate.

And before anyone asks, I don't know if there are any new spellcards for extra based on information from someone I have talked to when I first heard of this update. I've yet to beat extra either.

Well I'm aware Extra got toned down a bit with a patch some time ago but I still found it soulcrushingly painful to try and complete. We'll see how much sanity I can sacrifice to try and beat it once again. I got damn close though (see video in my last post in this thread, 1.02 unpatched extra).

So I finally cleared the extra stage. But it's not something I am even happy about.

Turns out you do not get prompted to save a replay or data for beating the stage, only when you fail.  But whatever, what is done is done! Never again will I put up with this stage. I only barely beat it with Patchouli's monstrous firepower.

Combat the monster extra stage with monster firepower. I wouldn't have cleared the final spell otherwise. It gets overwhelming.

Patchoili Extra stage, full run, relatively smooth until the timeouts. I officially wash my hands of this damn extra stage. I guarantee it will be months or into next year before I ever challenge this stage again. Every time I failed it was basically a piece of my soul crumbles away in defeat. I do not want to try again using a less powerful character in this stage, it's... pressuring.

Also, congrats on the extra clear Mesarthim. I don't know why version 1.03 changed it so that clears can't have replays saved. Replays aren't saved if you cleared the main game either from what I noticed. The difficulty spikes are pretty disheartening. Its what stopping me from taking the time to learn lunatic.

Edit: Realized how strange the first line sounds. I kind of meant doing individual videos as opposed to a small series.

Oh I don't HATE the game per say, just this stage. Basically just paint the picture of the word extra on it and I'll pour my life into making sure it gets cleared, unless it's story of eastern wonderland because that game has bad mechanics.

I mean for one there's absolutely no way I can clear Flandre's final spell without a large stash of lives and bombs for the last third of it. It's extremely overwhelming. Despite how much of a pain in the ass it is I don't have any particular gripe about the second timeout, can't say the same for the first timeout. The problem with the first timeout is despite the alteration to the chain ring (especially the outer ring) the thing that is most troublesome is the empty coffin, yes, the empty coffin. Unless you have amazing peripheral vision if you happened to be staring at the wrong coffin more than likely you can't tell which coffin is the empty one because the effects of a coffin filling make it hard to make out the empty one. I have mixed feelings about the timeout in general in that I find it'd be really easy if it was more noticeable but am not content with the fact it's up to RNG (random coffin placement per wave) for me to clear half of the waves (wave 5 being a great example in my video, starts in front of me but I couldn't see and went right instead of left). I plain just don't like the third spell but I believe my last piece of criticism is the sixth spell, the one with fireballs and flying coffins. I do find it's nice to see that you are let known that the coffins are coming via a visual flash but the bat effects from the coffins put so much information on the screen that it is hard to see the fireballs and sword bullets.

Also I despise that armored knight but I forgive his existence because it's not an issue to bomb him :(

*breathes out* But after clearing it with patchouli I feel a little less terrible about the stage as a whole, I just don't like knowing I had to abuse the strongest character to clear that stage.

I think the developer's blog (http://blog.sina.com.cn/u/2590933793) would be a good way to message him (or find a proper way to contact). Mind you, the page is in Chinese language so you'll most likely need to know Chinese to communicate.

I'd also like to point out that the DLC patch to fix replay saving does not work on the extra stage still.

Also, can someone give me a save file with the extra stage spell card challenges unlocked? I'd rather practice the cards than spend hours failing to clear the extra because apparently you need to beat the extra to even unlock spell practice. It's really stupid.

I don't think I fully understand the mechanic to gain lives/bombs yet (cherry shield), as I've had a lot of trouble collecting extends compared to FDF 1, which feels like it drowns you in them.

This game drowns you with them just as much, you do just have to understand the mechanic.

Grazing and collecting pink items fills the meter in the lower left. Once it's full, you get a border. Just like PCB. That's where the differences come in.

When your border breaks (whether it's through time or you brealing it manually) you get a bomb/life fragment. However, by grazing and collecting more pink items you can make your border last longer. If you can keep it up for long enough it'll upgrade to a level 2 border, which drops 2 fragments, then a level 3 border which drops 3 fragments. You can't go past level 3 so grazing/collecting items while you have a level 3 border just wastes them (though I think they're worth more score if you collect them at level 3).

Borders operate on a fixed cycle. Your first rotation and second rotations you get bomb fragments, your third rotation you get life fragments, then it repeats. So it's not always optimal to go for level 3 borders every time- sometimes it's better to manually break your bomb borders if you know a high graze section is coming up, that way you can get the most out of your life borders.

Overall I like FDF 1 better, I feel the bosses were more interesting and more challenging there. In particular Ran (besides her last two spells her patterns are just squares) and Lily (it's 100% random spam all day and night) are pretty big letdowns.

That said, this game definitely lives up to the first. Stage 4 is beautiful, and Yuyuko is probably my favorite boss in the series. That final spell is like a piece of art and the fact that you're supposed to dodge it was only an afterthought (though it's not bullshit hard or anything). I don't know if Yukari surpasses Flandre but she's definitely as good as. And Alice has some really unique and interesting concepts.

Well worth the money. Now to wait 5 years for IN.

Thanks for all the hints! What determines whether you get bomb or life pieces was a question I indeed had on my mind. I haven't been able to spot that pattern in the little time I had.

The Border mechanics in this game are very generous for survival but I find it even more intriguing for scoring; it grants you 1s of invulnerability when a border starts, and timing out a border will give PiV proportional to how much you grazed during it. It seems like a lot of the patterns in the game were designed with grazing in mind, which makes it a very exciting prospect to score.

Whoops. I actually didn't mean Letty OR Hyp, I meant Lily lol. Hyp was a stage 1 boss so interesting patterns weren't expected, but she was interesting enough for what she was. Lily on the other hand was all random spam everywhere except for her final spell.

When i tried to check my Task Manager, it says that the program runs for a few seconds, then just vanished.

BTW, this problem only occurs when i tried to play the steam release.
When i Played the Developer releases (1.02 and 1.03) it works just fine.

This annoys me, especially since there's no english translations for both games except for steam releases and FDF PCB only released on steam.

Anyone please help!
