I think the river was fine, wasn't the issue that Gensokyo itself disappeared and as a result there were no souls to ferry over?

>You wave to Utsuho.
>Making your way from the Palace of the Earth Spirits, you return to the streets of the Ancient City, and start making your way toward the exit. The city is still fairly empty and quiet. Or at least it is until you cross by the main intersection in the middle of the city, and look to the east in time to see Yuugi kicking a fallen oni hard enough to send her flying several feet, while shouting, "Does that feel like zoggin' old news, then!?"

>You decide not to get involved with this at all.
>You cross the bridge, seeing no sign of Parsee this time. The trip through the tunnels is fairly short, thanks to flight. You see Kisume lurking where she was the last time, she still leaves you alone. Reaching the surface, the air feels nice upon your skin. It seems to be slowly edging into late afternoon.
