UFO framerate drop in Windows 7.

Exactly what it says in the topic. My framerate tanks for no readily apparent reason. I know it's not a hardware issue; this computer is easily powerful enough to run the game at full speed. It still says it's going at a smooth 60fps in the game, and the game doesn't actually slow down. It just has fewer frames.

Do you have frameskip on?

Nope.

Further details: It's intermittent, mostly happening on spellcards.

Even further details: The problem doesn't occur nearly as much if I'm not playing in the windowed mode granted by the vsync patch, even if I'm using the patch in a different way.

Spellcards, huh?  I wonder if the game does some weird I/O during spellcards, and it's catching some bottleneck in your system (hardware or software).

I'm curious, do you have any of the fancy user-interface visual effects enabled?  Like whatever the Aero theme equivalent is for Win7?  Also, even if it's not an issue, what're your system specs?

Actually it's still Aero, just upgraded.
Anyways, I just suspect this may be a spec issue, since I can play UFO nicely.

Is your DirectX 9c up to date? I remember when MoF came out, I skipped the DirectX update provided with the game installer and had framerate drops during spellcards, or rather, during certain effects.

Yes, although disabling didn't help. (I'll be sure to give it another go, though.

I can actually give you a link, since it was a bundle deal. Here you go~

This is a question I can't answer, since I'm not actually sure how to check. I've been running the games off of a portable HD.

And, one more detail: I was playing PCB this morning with the vsync patch's windowed mode, and I only noticed a bit of the weird framerate drop at the very start of my run. And I made it all the way to Yuyuko's second spellcard on Normal. Seems to be mainly plaguing EoSD.
