> Naw, lets leave her out of this.
> Dodge anything they throw at us and strike at the first opening.

>"Just give me a sec, Dayna. This'll be over real quick."
>The thugs sneer at you. "Why you little...!"

>A hasty overhead hammer blow is slapped to the side and a sudden flash of steel is dodged before you hop backwards. One of them's pulled out a knife, but the others merely pound a fist into a palm menacingly. You flick out your own knife in response.

>A meaty fist flies at your face. With a sidestep, you grab the offending limb with one hand and slam the pommel of your knife into his gut with the other, then follow up with a jab to the chin and a knee to the gut. The guy crumples as his buddies flood in.
>The knife wielder attacks you with a clumsy lunge, but your merely deflect the blow and slash the back of his hand with a quick, downward chop. He drops the weapon in pain just as you spin around and kick him in the shins.
>It's actually a little embarrassing how easy this is. But then again you've been fighting otherworldly things for a good while now and this...well...this is kind of easy.

>Another heavy punch comes your way...jeez, they never learn do they? At least come two at once if you want to put up a fight...
>"It's pointless," you state flatly before you rain a barrage of crushing blows on his torso, then finish him off with a roundhouse to the face. As you slide back into position to meet the next thug, you decide to have a little fun.

>Maybe even rock his warudo world.

>"Like I said, it's pointless! Time's stopped." A quick kick to both shins from the side, to throw him off balance. Two swift blows to the gut, another to his left hip. Two strikes to his arm, then a back swing across his face. Follow with a straight punch to the chest, then a shoulder check, and a flying roundhouse to finish off!

>You indulge in a bit of silliness and pose, back and knees bent at odd angles with both arms crossed over your chest.

>"And so time flows once
more."

>You definitely need to read less manga, but it looks pretty awesome at least when you're posing and the guy just flies away for no apparent reason.
>"Alright, who's...next."
>Turning to the rest of the group, you realize Dayna didn't listen to you and knocked out the last two meatheads.

>You sigh in exasperation as Dayna looks at you with innocent eyes. "Let's just go home then?"

>...

>After reconsidering your actions, you think bringing her to that particular mall might have been idea. Sure, cheap, but a pretty bad part of the neighborhood to be honest...
>"...thank you, Mackenzie," whispers Dayna from behind you on the bike.
>"Wha?" you call back to her.
>"Thank you. It was...fun."
>You can't imagine how that was fun at all, but...whatever. You smile back at her. "No problem."

>...

>School starts the next day. You left Dayna with your landlady, a nice, elderly woman who always seems to be doing chores of some sort. Can't hurt to help out...and it might lower your rent.
>Morning gossip fills the air as usual.
>"Hey, did you hear about a few nights ago?"
>"What, there was another disappearance?"
>"No, no! Apparently they found a bunch of bodies, and guess what?"
>"Some of them were the missing people?"
>"ALL of them were! Not just from our town either, but places all across the states!"
>"That's so weird!"
>"And they were all missing all of their blood, and, get this, their heart too! Identical wounds and everything!"

>...Well that's morbid. You decide to investigate a bit.
>"So, uh, how many did they find?"
>"I dunno, like 3 dozen? They think it's some kind of serial killer, but with the times some of these people disappeared it's impossible that one guy did it all..."

>...Your eyes narrow. Three dozen people discovered, all with similar wounds, on the day you and Natalie took out the Gibbous Moon Phantasm? Suspicious...

> We'd best get together with Natalie on the next break to talk about this.

>You flick out your phone and give Natalie a quick text. This could be something bad, you feel.
>"Hey, 'kenzie! Stop spacing out!"
>"Yeah...be right there."

>Somehow you have a very bad feeling about this...

>School proceeds without a hitch. But through the entire morning, you can't shake off this strange feeling of dread...It follows and lingers around you, and you honestly have no clue why.
>In the middle of English, something flickers at the edge of your vision; you dearly want to look, but you refrain. Slowly, you lower your head and silently avert your eyes.
>It's small and nearly invisible, but you can see it. A small dark shape hiding away at the corner of the window, peering at you through a single white eye.

>Your heart races. It's broad daylight! And you just killed the damn thing, so how is this happening?
>If you leave it alone, who knows what havoc it could cause...but if you leave now, it'll seem really suspicious...
>Dammit, you don't have a lot of options.

>"Try not to go save the world, Mackenzie."
>While the rest of the class starts laughing, you resist the urge to cry out in shock. Of all the stupid jokes to make...
>You dash out immediately, looking for the shade. Aah, where could it have gone?
>"Debating where the closest bathroom is, Mr. Izayoi?"
>You laugh nervously as the teacher calls out from inside the classroom. Best to close the door first.

>You fight off the sudden wave of exhaustion, planting your feet firmly in the ground. "Not...quite," you spit, throwing it off via sheer force of will.
>Looking back inside your classroom, you notice everyone is asleep.
>A high pitched laughter fills the halls.

>You realize that the boiler room maintenance is still going on; if the tech guys are still working on it...dammit! But that weird shadow thing is still around.

> Head for the boiler room.
> Try and text Dayna on the way.

>You make haste for the boiler room.
>You consider texting Dayna, then realize the only way you're talking to her is by calling your landlady anyway...

>"Hello?"
>"Ah, Ms! May I speak to Dayna?"
>"Sure thing Mackenzie."
>...
>"..."
>"Dayna! I need your help! Something's going on at school...do you know where it is?"
>"...I'll be there."
>The phone clicks off soon after. You'll just have to trust her on that.

>Bulbous orbs of shadow begin to materialize in the air, obstructing your path. As you rush past, needles spikes burst out from their surfaces. You backpedal back in an effort to dodge, but your clothes are ripped anyway.

>"Tch...if you're going to stand in my way, then you best be prepared to die!"

>Time stops.

>You rush forward, knife flashing through arc after gleaming arc, splitting the offending orbs into pieces. A massive collection obstructs your path, too many to kill...it doesn't matter.

>Your body moves as if possessed. Slash after slash, strike after strike...the rush and risk, the thought that you may die if you do not kill all these eyesores fuels your every movement!

>One final slash...and time
resumes.

>You stand there, knife still held to your side, and breathe deeply. What...what the hell was that killing drive? You've never felt like that before...

>You shrug off the sense of dread and rush off.
>Thankfully, the boiler mechanics are okay. You set them against the wall outside the boiler room...and then a flash of darkness makes you leap back.
>"Who..?!"
>...It's only Dayna. Jeez, sometimes you forget she's a Demon Lord.

>Time to hunt that...whatever, you guess. Dayna might know something about it.

> Inform Dayna of what happened.
> "Do you know what we're dealing with?  I've got absolutely no clue."

>Dayna nods at your description.
>"Morphean...bounded field of sleeping. Feeds on dreams...eventually fatal."
>Tch...that doesn't sound good.
>"Small...hard to hunt...but weak."
>So if you find it...then it's only a time stop away from ending this. You nod.

>"Alright, let's go then. Where do they usually hide?"
>"Wet. Warm."
>Well that's useful...sometimes you wonder why Dayna speaks so...wait. Wet? Warm?
>You glance back at the boiler room...
>"...really?"

>...
>Step by slow step. You slowly walk through the boiler room, scanning every corner. Long lines of machinery, each spitting out steam at regular intervals, span before you. Dayna follows, though you can barely even tell; she doesn't make a sound.
>Something flickers across the corridor. Then again, except for a completely different area. How...?

>"Illusions. Dreams made real. Don't be tricked."
>You smile at Dayna's voice. It's definitely reassuring to have there.
>It appears yet again, streaking across the ceiling like a black stroke of ink. Then again, and again...tch, you can't locate it...laughter fills the boiler room, clearly mocking you...

>Suddenly, a mass of black tendrils erupts from behind you. They pierce the ceiling in an instant and disrupt the path of the shade; it begins to backpedal to avoid the tendrils, but you've already caught it!

>The tendrils serve as a perfect platform. With a single slash, it's all over.

>"Now fall!"

>Both halves of the shade splatter to the ground in messy heaps. Looking back, you see the tendrils retract back into Dayna's arm...and turn back into her fingers. Ahh...that's a little creepy.

>...

>School resumes. Somehow they manage to handwave the strange occurrence. You don't really know how, and you don't really feel the need to.

> Try calling Lily to see if she's available.
> If she's fine with it, bring Dayna along as well.

>Ring~ ring~
>"H-hello?"
>"Sup Lily. Feel like doing anything? Not a whole lot of homework."
>"O-oh! Sure."
>"Also, do you mind if I bring a friend...?"
>You wonder offhandedly what to do...

>...

>Apparently shopping for art supplies. You try to think of some kind of fine art Lily doesn't do; lack of socializing leaves a girl with a surprising amount of free time, you realize.
>"S-so we s-should go over there f-for the t-thread...and there a-are some nice t-trinkets t-there I think I can use...ah!"
>"...!"
>"Shit, sorry..."
>Having three people on one bike, Dayna on the handlebars and Lily behind you, is kind of strange. Good work out though. But people are staring.
>Lily points out another place on the map. "A-anyways, here is c-closest for now..."
>"Sure thing."
>You weren't entirely surprised at Lily's reaction to Dayna. Slight blush, stuttered introduction...Lily's almost as bad as a guy, sometimes, but she's discreet about it. (to everyone but you)
>"S-so...um..."
>Lily whispers into your ear. With the wind whipping around, Dayna most likely can't hear.
>"W-who is s-she?"
>"Ah...long story..."

>...

>You stand off to the side while Dayna and Lily peruse the wares of this particular arts and crafts establishment. Your bike is safely locked up outside. This is apparently the last one; you've been dragged all over town looking for various knickknacks Lily's using to make...spirit jewels, was it? Ghost trinkets? Soul...probably soul something.
>It's kind of relaxing, watching them. Dayna seems really intrigued and Lily's definitely happy to explain...a bitter taste follows as you remember something.
>'...the only art I know...is the walls of cold portraits...of father and mother.'
>Jeez. Dayna's life before this might be pretty damn weird, and slightly cliche, but hell if ain't depressing.
>Your watch ticks in a slightly menacing manner. "Oi, girls, time to eat dinner."
>They both turn to you with pleading looks in their eyes. Obviously they want to stay...ah, troublesome. What to do...

> Well... A late dinner can't hurt once in awhile right?

>You sigh in resignation. "Alright, alright...my place is pretty close, actually. I'll go grab some take out, then we'll head home, 'kay?"
>While both girls return to their browsing, you turn off and leave. You have a sudden craving for something spicy...maybe a curry place is nearby?

>It's a crisp night. Not a whole of people out to shop or eat tonight...it's nice and peaceful. Seeing as the girls are probably going to take a while, you decide to take things slowly...
>A slow drizzle falls from the sky. Huh...the weather didn't say anything about rai-

>Time stops.
>?!
>How the hell? You didn't even do anything! How could time possibly be stopped right now? Even your mental timer hasn't changed-

>Ba dump.
>Something approaches.
>Ba dump.
>Something...strong. Overwhelmingly so.
>Ba dump.
>It's power is like an oppressive aura...you can barely resist being brought to your knees at its immense power.
>Ba dump.
>Your heart beats rapidly in your chest. Cold sweat floods out of your skin. What...what in the world is going on?

>"You have good instincts, boy. Did you even realize you drew your weapon?"
>Wha...?
>"And to think you've developed enough control to maintain an immunity to my own time manipulation...how resplendent. Truly magnificent. I applaud your growth."
>This voice...why does it seems so familiar? Why...it's everywhere and nowhere. You can't find the source anywhere...
>"You think it's fear, don't you? That the only reason you can't move is that you're petrified in dread..."
>...What else could it be? With this kind of strength...how could anyone move at all? How could anyone not be afraid?!
>"You're wrong, you know. It's not fear...it's anticipation. Just look at your face! Look at how happy you are~"
>Your eyes move of their own accord to stare at an errant rain drop, frozen in place right before your face.
>The curved surface makes your crooked grin, one you didn't even know you had, all the more disturbing.
>"Wha..."
>You realize the voice's words ring truth. Your chest shakes and twitches in excitement. Welling up deep inside you is not fear...but the desire to kill. To fight. To put your life on the line and kill...but you still can't move, no matter how much you want to.
>"Soon you can put that killing intent to good use. But you won't be able to protect those you care for. Not the way you are now."
>The view in the rain droplet changes. You catch the sight of the girls, walking out of the art store with happy smiles in their faces.
>"I can't intervene...but I can do this."

>Impact. Sharp pain. Forced movement. You can't interpret it any clearer than that. Something hits you, over and over again. Slashing, bashing, stabbing. You hit a car, then the floor, then a lamppost.
>You gasp and groan, forced to all fours by the assault. Still your assailant remains unseen. And still time remains stopped.

>"See...? You're weak. But we can change that."
>"Hidden within you is the soul of a killer. But at the same time is the innate connection to time and space itself...you must embrace one, as all those before you have. It is your legacy. It is your destiny."
>What...what is it talking about...? Legacy? Soul of a killer? Why...why is this happening now?
>"You can't protect them otherwise. You'll never be able to. So choose one."
>Looming in front of you, ignorant of both time's frozen state and gravity's pull, lie a polished pocket watch and a gleaming silver knife.
>One hand rises, though you did not ask it to do so. Your mouth curls and you feel yourself speak...
>"I...I choose..."

>You reach for the pocketwatch, and already you can feel it ticking a steady rhythm through you...relief as never before will soon be yours.
>'How deceiving of it.'
>You freeze. Another voice...the one which had warned you so many times before?
>'It is truth that there are two choices...but another remains, my child.'
>And there, glimmering between the knife and the pocketwatch, lies something else.
>'Being weak...isn't wrong. The weak can overpower the strong. Humans can defeat the strange occult that hound them. Have you ever had problems before, fighting those beasts?'
>Of course...pain and wounds and suffering...limitless amounts of collateral damage...
>'But you lived all the same. You fought and struggled and survived...isn't that what it means to be human? Though the path of the killer, and the path of the watchmaker may indeed grant you the strength to protect your friends...you lose yourself. Like so many before...like so many of us before...you will lose yourself to that strength.'
>Then she appears. Silvery hair. Blue eyes. A warm smile, and an oustretched hand.
>'I cannot force you to choose my path. I cannot force you into anything...but you are the first I can give the option. Too many times have I watched my descendants stray from what it means to be an Izayoi...will you, as well?'

>The choices have been revealed.
>The path of the killer. With it, you will exceed the limits of humanity. Mental, physical, emotional, spiritual. The knife will become a part of you, the gleaming silver fang of a gleaming silver predator.
>The path of the watchmaker. With it, time itself will bend and crack at your will. Space as well. With but a whim, perhaps even reality itself could be unraveled.
>The path of the human. With it, you will remain weak. The weakest. But those who are weak...can see the weakness in others. And before your eyes, those weak eyes, the inherent fragility of everything may be revealed...

>Which do you pick?

>You take her hand in yours and grasp it tightly. "Let's go then."
>Her eyes glow a bright, blinding blue...
and it's over.

>You collapse to your knees, suddenly feeling very small and unimportant. But...it's not unpleasant. It feels...good...to understand.
>At some point, Dayna and Lily rushed over to your side during your reverie. Dayna seems to understand what happened...maybe she sensed the change in power? Lily, on the other hand, seems hysterical.
>" 'k-kenzie! What happened?! One s-second you were standing, a-and the next you were o-on the floor like t-this!"
>...Ah...she's worried. And about to cry...you realize something. Lily...always asked if you were okay on the days after event nights. Somehow...how did she know? Does she suspect anything?
>You wonder if you should tell her anyway...

>Lily looks like she's about to break into tears. "A-a-ah...a-alright..."
>As you get up, Lily tugs at your sleeve. "H-hmm?" you ask shakily.
>"P-please...," she begins in a such a quiet voice you can barely hear it. After a moments pause in which she seems to gather herself in, she speaks again. "Please don't hurt yourself. You're one of my most precious people."
