Title: The Crawl Arena ~ wrathie's vampires
Post by: Ramus on October 17, 2009, 12:56:59 PM: Time to rebirth this thing. I'm mainly doing this because I realize two things:

1. Relays suck.
2. I suddenly realize it was a bad idea for my mental health to join Mafia.

Yay, so I'll be using version 0.5.2

Rules:
1. Everyone starts with 50 gold.
2. You can bet a given amount of gold on each match, so long as it doesn't exceed your total.
3. Winning means you get double. Losing means you lost the money bet. Tying still means losing the money you bet.
4. If you hit rock bottom, you get 1 gold.
5. NEW! Tournament, once enough people sign up for the tournament, I'll have deathmatch set ups where you purchase your team based on how much HD they have. See here:

(3 gold = 1 HD)

6. If your team wins, you'll get a certain amount of money per tier. This first tier, if you win, you get 25 gold.
7. And other people can be on your battle like any other battle. There will probably be one player match once per day.
8. However, you can't pick the following: (I hold the right to add to this list)
-Zombies and skeletons (however, skeletal dragon and liches are allowed)
-Uniques
-testspawner
-Silver statue
-Boggart
-Panda Land Lords

9. You can only have up to 50 of any given monster.
10. ~~You'll be given a head of time warning when your match will be, so don't feel like you have to spend money immediately for your monsters.~~ There will be a deadline for each tier for buying monsters. None stated yet.
11. However, if you wish to resell your monsters, you'll get 2/3 of your monster back ROUNDED DOWN.
12. You can bet without participating in the tournament, so just have fun!
13. Poor people with less than fifty gold can spend a round begging instead of betting. Regardless of your gold count, you'll be set back to fifty.

Round 1:
Sigmund VS Ogre
Note: Magic versus brute. You know this classic set up.

Round 2:
Killer Klown VS Serpent of Hell
Note: Yeah! Poke him to death! Now go for the tickle! WOOOO! Ah crud, fireball.

Round 3:
NetHack Round (Note that I'll be pulling battles from different Roguelikes every other day to liven things up a bit)
Red Dragon VS Lich
Note: Red dragons are well known for being brutes, more so for the fact that they have fire breath. Liches are on the other hand, have an assortment of nice spells to tinker with.

Totaku and shinyjam in the lead, results of the matches were:

Sigmund VS Ogre
Actually closer than you'd think. Sigmund didn't use confusion at all. He just went flame throw happy and nearly got killed when the Ogre socked him twice in a row. He just barely made it at severely injured.

Killer Klown VS Serpent of Hell
Oh gah, this match depressed me. The killer klown is probably one of the most awesome monsters in Crawl and just spent his time blinking instead of laying waste to the dragon. Result was that he got cooked.

Lich VS Red Dragon
Curb stomp battle. The Lich got dumb and walked right up to the dragon. Melee ensued.

I think I'll have the next set of matches up in about ten minutes depending.

Cerebov VS 7 Silver Statue
We'll just say each statue counts for a sin. So, the governor of Panda Land VS tons and tons of minor demons. It'll be a long match regardless. I mean really long. Stupidly long.

Round 5:
Deep Elf Blademaster VS (Random color) Draconian Knight
"Come, let us dance with blades in hand. Truly the most beautiful dance in the land, swords clash and produce a sound like no other, red paints art in the ground, and through weaving movements, we have made death truly lovely."

Round 6:
Saint Roka (unique priest orc) and his band of followers VS Ancient Lich
Well, Roka does come with armor, a nice weapon, followers, and ability to smite, but the Lich can summon, uses armor piercing spells, and blink.

Well, ah, other than shinyjam, that hurt a lot of people or didn't take them anywhere. Slow clap for Pesco for not having sex with the RNG before betting.

Round 4:
Silver statues won this by holding out. Cerebov figured it'd be good for him to take his sweet time killing whatever popped up and not the statues themselves. Result? Death of a thousand paper cuts. Literally, his kill count was in the thousands before the match ended.

Round 5:
Oosh, close one here. The draconian was purple, which meant sticky flames. It had no effect on the battle since the elf dodged all shots matrix style. However, it started off with the elf blade master winning by just utterly dodging every hit by the draconian. However, halfway through, the draconian started puttin up his shield and so neither hit the other for a while until the draconian hit three times in a row with a double bladed sword, which pretty much nearly destroyed the elf. Then they went on for another minute before the draconian put the elf down with a lucky shot.

Round 6:
Saint Roka won here. The Lich didn't even bother to blink. He just got surrounded by meat shields and smited to redeath by Roka. Kinda disappointing actually.

Next matches will be up as soon as I have dinner and catch up on Mafia.

Round 7:
Deep Elf Master Archer VS Xtahua
Note: The really long named archer elf is fast. Faster than the blademaster to be exact. As in, he gets off three to four arrows per round with rapid fire succession and high accuracy. Downside is he's easily flammable, not so good at dodging compared to the blademaster and sucks at close range. Xtahua just happens to like closing in fast, shooting undodgeable fireballs, and having AC in the excess.

Round 8:
Fiend VS Ice Fiend
Note: The vanilla fiend is really the fire fiend. They both like spamming their respective element and using the power of hell upon you. Fire VS ice, go!

Round 9: IVAN
Mistress VS Boss Plant thing who's name I just unconveniently forgot
Note: The mistress in IVAN can be found as a helper early on by praying to the god of lust I believe. The mistress while awesome in every offensive aspect and quick with her dual wielded whips, has a tendency to, ugh... well, it's IVAN, use your imagination. First boss in the game is a two by two square plant that is more than able to rip off your head in a single blow. However, it is slow and can't move, but it can summon more smaller plants. Mistress, single fast enemy VS large slow plant boss.

Took twenty arrows over six turns. Least to say, Xtahua never got more than three steps. Did fireball the elf for a third of his (she? We all know elves are dual sexual) HP once.

Round 8:
Ice fiend wins here. Fiend found out hard that the powers of hell don't work on another demon. Ice still works on fire though.

Round 9: Mistress wins. We'll just call it a curbstomp battle.

NEW RULE: If you're under 50 gold, you can spend a round ##begging. You'll be set to fifty gold next time. If you beg while you're over 50 gold, you'll be mugged for all but 50 gold.

Next round to be up in a few minutes.

Note: We're talking the vanilla kind. The kind you can kill at level 1.

Round 11:
Quicksilver Dragon VS 150 Orcs
Note: The quicksilver dragon is the most dangerous dragon you'll meet in Crawl. It moves fast, uses every breath element available and hits for tons of damage.

Round 12:
Killer Klown VS Rakshasa
Note: And you thought I'd do another 150 orcs. Anyway, the Rakshasa uses lightning attacks and makes duplicate images of itself (images themselves are harmless but a nuisance since you can't tell them and the original apart). Killer Klown blinks, pinches, chokes, and kicks people in the krotch.

20 on 150 orcs to beat Master Elven Archer ( I don't think the Elf master Archer will have enough ammo to last that long. and all it'll take it the right weapon from the right orc to "bring on the pain")

50 on the Quick Silver Dragon to beat 150 orcs (They're evil beasts! They will slaughter you before you get a chance to move! I'm certain it can take on an army of orcs)

30 on Killer Clown to beat Rhakasha (This one is just a random shot of hope, because as soon as Mr. Rahasha starts using Shadow Clone no jutsu it's becomes rather tricky, but if the klown can find the right one it'll be over before you know it. So yeah I'm taking a gamble with this one.)

Results:
Deep Elf Blademaster lost. At first he was doing just fine, around 100 orcs, though, he started to get hit by the orcs with more accurate weapons. Eventually dropped dead at around 50 orcs left.

Quicksilver did better at least, ending up at around 15 orcs left. Still died though.

Killer Klown won. Despite the clones, the Rakshasa didn't produce them fast enough, the Klown killed them in a single round and eventually found the tiger quite easily.

I'll post up the next round in, oh say, a few hours. I've got an interview for MIT to prepare for. PRAY FOR ME.

Round 13:
Troll VS Unseen Horror
Note: Unseen Horror is like the GODDAMN BAT except v2. It's faster, stronger, AND invisible. However, compared to the troll, it's power sucks, it's about as durable as wet paper. But the troll can't see invisible.

Round 14:
Kobold Demonologist VS Silver Statue
Note: So they can both summon tons of demons. However, the silver statue is generally more durable than the Kobold, however, the kobold is mobile. And yeah, demons. Lots of them.

Round 15: Original Rogue
Purple Worm VS Dragon
Note: The two hardest enemies in the game Rogue. Both do tons of damage, the main difference being that the worm has more health while the dragon has more AC (defense). Being the original rogue, there isn't much more they can do than just hit each other, so place your bets.

Now to sink back into the shadows of lurking.

Round 13: Troll won. Unseen horror made the mistake of standing next to the Troll for more than a single turn. Least to say, it died. Troll was down to severely wounded though.

Round 14: Silver Statue won due to summoning double smoke demons. Smiting hurts like a bitch.

Round 15: Dragon won this one. Ah, nothing much to say about it. Back and forth slap fight.

Next set of matches coming up. Deadline for signing up for the tournament is 11:59 PM on Saturday EST. Winning a round in the first tier gets you 100 gold. You can also bet on tier matches.

Sonja VS Boggart
Note: Boggarts are those little bastards who poke up in the Vaults and summon shit tons of monsters. Surprisingly though, they don't do it that fast to other enemy monsters. Just you. But still, that's a random summon every three turns, and that hurts. Sonja is a blinking, ballerina FEMALE (gasp! They exist?!) Kobold that moves fast and is armed with a blowgun and needles. Poison and curare needles. And they hurt.

Round 17:
Norris VS Boris
Note: Both are end game uniques. Probably brothers to boot. Anyway, Norris is an evil surfer who has a variety of spells and a nice weapon granted always from the start. Chances are, it's a randart. He also wears nothing but pants because his skin is so tough it gives natural AC. Boris, on the other hand, is the eviler twin and is a Lich. He has a wider variety of spells, but sucks at melee. Comes with a randart staff (that he never uses) and some fancy robes. Utterly ignores cold and negative spells.

Round 18: SPECIAL ROUND
Cerebov VS 50 Trapdoor Spiders
Note: Trapdoor spiders are bastards that hide under the floor and jump out at you. They're weak compared to Cerebov though. But they hide. A LOT. Take a guess as to how many turns it takes for Cerebov to wreck their shit. The range of the guess must be 20 at most. So like 40 - 60 turns. Or 230 - 250. Getting this right gets you quadruple gold.

For the Round 18 special, I'll bet 15 on 30-50 turns. Cerebov's AoE should be able to get more than one spider at once, depending on how they pop out.

Since the hound is listed to have 3HD, the cost is three times that amount. So you'll have to spend 9 gold to buy the hound. After that, you've got the creature on your team forever unless you resell.

Anyway, let's say your team consist of 3 hounds and 1 jelly. You're up next in the tournament against Dude #2. He has his own team. Both of your teams are put in the arena and we get to see who wins. If your team is alive by the end, you move on in the brackets and get 100 gold.

As far as how the tournament is set up, it's bracket style death cage match. Think Smash Bros. tournament mode.

(Mainly because knowing Sonja, she's remarkably agile for a unique. Boggrat doesn't have much of a chance is Sonja can get the first few moves out. The only way she'll fall is if the boggrat start getting summon happy, and that's somewhat rare at least in my book)

50 on (Chuck) Norris

He's tough as nails and even if the unique lich can get out some ubber powered demon or magic to aid him, Norris can usually dish out the pain way before it occurs.

Course there's also the bit where Boris touches you....<shudder>

Boggart wins. I actually thought Sonja would win, but no, despite sticking the guy full of poison needles, he managed to shake off the poison just before death and had summoned tons of monsters. Sonja got outnumbered and out powered.

Round 17:
It may have been Boris VS Chuck Norris surfing, but no matter how much AC you have, the Crystal Spear spell IGNORES that. Norris managed to get the Lich down to moderately wounded, but psh. Norris never stood a chance.

Round 18:
67 turns. Remember, Cerebov does have fire storm and if the spiders come up while the fire is still in the air, they get cooked.

Next set of rounds coming up. Remember you've got until tonight at midnight to sign up for fame, glory, and gold.

Ufetubus VS Terence
Note: So Terence is pretty much the WEAKEST unique around (Jessica can at least get those horrible wands that confuse you). It's him versus the weakest demon in the game. Ufetubi can move fast, attack multiple times, but their HP sucks as does their AC, and for that matter, attack power. But so does Terence. He gets armor at least.

Round 20:
Sun Demon VS Vampire
Note: About as ironic as it sounds. Vampire still have spammals and the sun demon still has fire spells.

Round 21: Orignal Rogue Round
Bat VS Kobold
Note: Both begin to appear on the first level. The bat moves twice as fast as most enemies, has low HP, and hits for 1d2. The kobold, on the other hand, moves at normal speed, hits for 1d4, and has a lot more HP. Take your pick.

Well, it's past 11:59PM Saturday here. I've got four people on the list. When I update the arena today, that'll be the amount of gold you can spent on a team. If you have less than 50 gold, you'll be automatically set back up to 50. Remember that you have to spend the gold to buy monsters, so you can't both spend all your money and bet it all of it at the same time.

Depending on how fast you guys buy, I'm hoping to have the first match on Monday, but whenever. Winning a first tier match gets you 100 gold, and winning finals gets you 250 gold.

Link to page to buy monsters are on the first page, and remember the gold to HD conversion rate is 3:1. So a rat costs 3 gold to buy since its HD is 1.

Note: Yeah, twenty guys with rapid fire bows. Anyway, the royal jellies also have good amount of health, absorb HP when eating up the arrows that drop after hitting them (important note, that HP regained? Nothing compared to the amount taken off) and may split when hit, meaning many, many wimpy jellies to fight.

Round 23:
Pit Fiend VS Ice Fiend
Note: So yeah, take the regular fiend and power him up into a much slower, tanker, but generally better pit fiend. And now you've finally got something on par of the ice fiend.

Round 24:
100 Newts VS 100 Rats
Note: Ah, yeah, big numbers.

EDIT:

Uniques are monsters with names. Sigmund is a unique, as are the hell lords. testspawner isn't even in the game, it's just part of the arena where you can summon infinite numbers of monsters to fight forever. It's not even a real monster and from what I know, it's invincible.

Note: Draconians usually only start with a melee weapon but have a random breath weapon determined by their color. Yaktaurs instead only get a crossbow but also some fearsome unarmed melee (which if you remember Meiling, plays off well in the late game). They're both pretty meaty and similar speeds.

Round 26:
Angel VS Pit Fiend
Note: Angels are weaker versions of the Daeva, meaning they can smite to a lesser extent (basically the holy version of "Your body is wracked with the powers of Hell") and has a nice weapon to start with.

The shapeshifter and the draconian were both knocked out almost immediately. The Pit Fiend just kept taking punishment from the troll and exchange blow for blow. Pit Fiend of course came out on top. The elf nearly took out the Lich before being hit by a spell and getting KO'd. Lich got then stomped on by the Pit Fiend.

Congrats, you're going onto round 3.

eberrett's team: Executioner, giant eyeball, and a butterfly (really?)

wrathie wins via an awesome combination of spammals and confusion. The butterfly did not survive. Anyway, the executioner ran into the range and ran around confused and was eventually eaten alive by spammals. The eyeball went first though. Never forget your crowd control and long range people.

Round 25:
Psh, Draconian walked all over the Yaktaur. Not much to say here.

Round 26:
Angel wins. Apparently holy beings are immune to the wrath of hell.

Today I'm only setting up one round and that's between wrathie and shinyjam, which means I'd like you guys to bet on that match. If your team is part of the round, feel free to bet on your own team (or the opposition's...?) for even more gold.

The elf had run out of arrows and when he eventually got over to the statue, punched it eight times, none of which did damage. It was a tie.

That being I said, I'm willing to make an exception here, everyone gets their money back and wrathie and shinyjam now should spend their remaining money to add to their current team. Exchange rate is still as it was before, 3gold for 1 HD.

Winner was the necromancer. The wizard took out 2 zombies and a skeleton before getting killed by the iron troll skeleton.

Round 32:
Youmu wins. Thanks a mix of fast running, a speed weapon, hasting, swifting, and raging, Youmu was moving and attacking at five times the normal speed. Her 27 levels in dodging also made things pretty easy since Cerebov couldn't lay a finger on her but a few times.

wrathie wins against my expectations, and ironically enough, the Daeva didn't win it for him. The elf flat out killed that thing while it murdered the Pit Fiend. The curse skull... didn't do jack. That got stomped by the skeletal dragon. Also, statues don't work on things that have no intelligence to begin with. The skeletal dragon destroyed both of those. So what caused wrathie to win? Yeap, a few Titanic loads of rats. If I ever do this again, you better bet vampires are going to be banned.

Yeah, well, excuse me, no matches until tomorrow, I've got some studying to do.

Funny thing guys, smiting doesn't do anymore damage to a demonspawn than a normal creature. It actually doesn't do anything to ghosts really, not anything more than the norm. The holy wrath part, I forgot about. That hurts ghosts really badly. But not demonspawn. Just demons. Don't ask me why.

I actually won this round. Leave it to Sigmund to be stupid when I'm not actually playing the melee character. He got destroyed.

Round 34:
Surprising, Pesco held his ground and got the Daeva down to severely wounded. But eh...

Note: The Hell Knight is stronger than the Hydra, at first anyway. Not to mention the regenerating heads AND HP tend to help the hydra over time.

The sheer jumps and drops of gold is incredible. Anyway...

Note: All of the above are uniques. Francis and Frances are more or less the same, considering that they both have similar stats and the same spell set as an orc high priest (meaning smite, summon minor demons, pain, etc.) Roxanne is a statue that has insane amounts of defense that can cast magic at rapid speeds. Quite difficult to kill without disintegration actually.

Actually, it's more than just that, but I don't feel like getting into the melee system of Crawl, the specified part about animals, hit chances, and the RNG. Just know it's more complicated than that.

Note: It's a pig. That breathes fire. And has wings. And it's from hell. Makes total sense. The deep elf is basically an armored elf with a sword and shield. Not nearly as fast as its superior counterpart, deep elf blademaster.
