As for me, I find danmaku erotic. Can you see? Those wave motions.

I guess that explains one of Koishi's spellcards.

Are you refering to the fact she uses hearts as danmaku?

Could the gestures of Eirin Eirin be the part of his discomfort? :V
I think it's more the "OPPAI OPPAI" chants that sometimes go along with it.

Having seen the performance, it just looked like ZUN felt a bit embarrassed because of all the attention he was getting in the song (Beat Mario changed some of the lyrics to say 'Happy 20th Anniversary' and 'Jun'ya Oota!') and by the time SOUND HOLIC performed he had 8 hours worth of booze running through his system, which would stop anyone being shy, lol.

(Kinda sad this thread went from being a really interesting discussion on the stream to 'omg, someone mentioned sex! Porn! BOOBS!' C'mon guys.)

Next year, he's making them use arcade sticks.

Shmups controls are good with arcade sticks.

I'll have to take your word for it. I imagine it would be a lot of fun, but I can't see myself playing better using an arcade stick instead of keys.

It's really a matter of comfort, instead of using your fingers to move, you use your wrist. Reaction time is the same since movement is natural, and buttons are even more sensible than on a keyboard. Directions are also way more precise than people think.

I don't think people would be that much troubled by it, considering most CAVE and Psikyo shmups in Japan are still played on arcade cabinets. Heck, even over here we still use our arcade cabinet to play shmups, it's so comfy.

Almost everyone in Japan plays games using controllers or arcade sticks... There's a reason why they're still stuck using an awkward default keyboard control scheme from the 80s which can't be changed at all in most games, even commercial ones, and when they use different defaults it's something completely random.

Shmups controls are good with arcade sticks

As a shmup player who has played both retro and newer shmups on arcade cabinets with a joystick configuration, I can honestly say that I do not enjoy using a joystick for shmups at all. First of all there is the wrist strain that I get from keeping my wrist in a certain position when playing shmups with a joystick for long periods of time (arcade freeplay!) which in turn effects my performance in the game. Anything that effects your performance in any game that *demands* precision control is not a good control scheme. I have to keep my wrist on a flat surface to rest it from being fatigued and with a joystick of particular height I always have to have it elevated from the surface and in turn, have the elevated hand disadvantage.

Second, with joysticks and even the twin sticks on a PS2 or similar controller, the lack of hard set sensitivity on really light presses of the stick might not register if you were light on the touch. Also keep in mind that when you tilt a joystick all the way in one direction, you are going to have to take a few extra milliseconds to move the stick in the other direction which on a keyboard layout of left, right,up,down or WASD you don't have that problem. This tiny flaw could be the difference between you barely missing that surprise bullet that came out of nowhere or just plain out getting hit by it and this is *detrimental* to being good at shmups. This also adds to getting the unique frill of almost dying but because of your skill and reflexes you survived.

Third and finally, Nearly 1 out of 4 shmup arcade machines that I play, retro or newer, always seem to have a broken or wonky/slightly off joystick control when I play them. I assume that when people play the games on them, they carelessly jerk the joystick around in the thick of the moment when they are distracted by the game and just end up breaking the joystick. I remember an occasion when I played 1944 on a retro cabinet and I had to play the damn game by pushing the joystick as hard as I could in all directions just to register your movement. So, joysticks are more prone to breaking when hard set buttons simply are less prone to that problem.

You know what I think is the ideal type of control to have in a shmup? A touch pad and a smooth tip electronic stylus pen like the Nintendo 3DS has. You have pinpoint accuracy and it takes less from your hand to move around the game and dodge. You move using a lower touch pad for input and stare at a larger monitor on top so that your pen/hand isn't in the way like you have with smart phone games. I believe that this configuration is optimal. A mouse for control is a close second, third would be the traditional keyboard control Touhou has and last would be a joystick.

Think about those things I brought up the next time you decide to use a joystick for anything, especially shmups.

The Danmaku was intense, like wet rain dripping on your mouth. Long, thick, hard, curvy lasers burst forth from the enemy and penetrated out heroines hitbox. It came deep inside our heroine and pierced through her in a forceful thrust. She had no time to have it graze and touch her against her smooth, delicate skin. This instance climaxed in a massive explosion that rocked the screen.

I hope you realize that you're basically telling people not to buy an arcade stick because you never learned how to hold one properly and all of the places you went to had bad sticks. Changing directions on a good stick isn't a big deal unless you have very weak arms and there are people using the same stick since the late PSX/Saturn era. Good parts are very durable and aren't too hard replace.

Oh, lovely, bringing this silly debate into what is supposed to be about Touhou's 20th anniversiary and the stream of greatness.. On which controls are the superior sort to play Touhou with... WHO FUCKING CARES?!

Uh, I mean, it's still pretty surprising Touhou's been around for 20 years now. HRtP came out while I was still in middle school. It's pretty cray-cray. And it was all originally for a programming class project, too. Here's to another two decades of touhou... or maybe one... or a half.

Or three... or maybe four.... or five.

The ZUN man might die but the legend and his legacy will always live on.

Seriously, if the ZUN son doesn't grow up to carry the torch then one of his close friends probably will...  and the half of Japan who makes Touhou Doujin works. I mean, there's freaking Touhou festivals. It's a phenomenon!

I didn't realize a whole debate was gonna kick off over it. I just wanted to steer the topic away from the whole ero angle.

It is pretty nuts. I mean a whole generation has passed in the intervening time. That's what I find assuring about his repeated pronouncements that he'd keep right on going even if the fandom was reduced to nothing. It's a personal passion for him, and it shows.

Not that it really matters which controls/device is superiour to play shmups, though there seems to be a major difference and opinion.

In the last interview I did notice ZUN using a gamepad at home when testing his latest Touhou production. That was the first time I've witnessed it and it really confused me.

I "grew up"  to use the keyboard for Touhou, mainly because I am not a shmup player. Arcades are non-existent in my country (lately) and I don't really have the urge to play one either. During my trip in Japan I played an old famicom or w/e it was in a Hostel. The game was called "Twin Bees" and you guess what: A gamepad was your control. Do-able I guess for such games? No idea.

Regarding joysticks > I can see their potential benefits for shmups, flight simulators, gundam simulators and such. Therefore the story of Halfgrand is recognizable. Though for me they also have their downside which is personal discomfort. For example a fighting game like Dead or Alive 5 I can manage decent on a PS gamepad. But when I was in the arcade I had to use a stick. I couldn't even perform 1 combo and got my ass kicked brutally for no reason. Well, there is a reason: "Not being used to joysticks".

One sets his mouse sensitivity in FPS to +100 and kicks ass. Another one sets it to -100 and kicks ass.

TL DR: Personal comfort > theories.

That said, did anybody see the part of the stream where ZUN uses a fucking shoulder cannon confetti launcher? Bad ass imo!

Cannon Sign ~ Confetti Launcher!

Make it happen, all you Danmakufu scripters who make ZUN boss battles.

Also, am I the only one to notice that when ZUN brings out the launcher and fires it, his shirt and his hat make him look camouflaged as hell. It played tricks on my eyes.

COMMANDO ZUN!

Also, ZUN needs to release a clothing brand, especially with that style of his... ZUN Wear!
