Title: Eating and Drinking through Hiroshima
Post by: Rin Kagamine on September 04, 2010, 02:02:16 PM
Don't know why I'm so nervous.  Oh god I hope they don't think I'm a terrorist or anything.

HEY FBI!  Both of my computers are just computers!  The hard drive on the other hand

Minneapolis to Tokyo!  Yeah, my reaction exactly.

Part of me thinks that I'm just doing all this walking because I'll be sitting for so long.  Maybe the tiredness is going to my head?  After only 2 hours of sleep I thought I'd be more tired and just sleep on the plane.  Guess not.

Hilarious.  AT&T told me to just tear the SIM out of my phone once I land, otherwise they were going to rip me off for just about anything I do.  Nice to know that they're honest about it.

39,000 yen really doesn't get very far.  After the train from the airport to Tokyo and my hotel for two nights and my train to Hiroshima, I'm not going to have much left right then.  Oh sweet 50,000 yen stipend cannot come soon enough!

Flying to Hiroshima looks like about 30,000 yen.  The bullet train is about 18,000 yen and about 5 hours.  Still, the Nozomi Shinkansen, the fastest one, is less than 1000 yen more expensive than the Hikari Shinkansen.  Go for the gold I say!

Oh my this backpack is so heavy.  I still haven't eaten breakfast yet, just a fistful of vitamins.

Boarding in 40 minutes for Minneapolis.  Better go find some water.

EDIT: Actually it seems you're probably boarding right now.

Yeah, haven't even left Raleigh yet.  I also started a blog that I'll link to once I get some content (read: pictures).  Until then, more nonsense.

Cookies, breakfast of champions eh Vic?

I should probably actually take a picture of myself at the airport, dunno why.

Just touched down in Minneapolis.  Flew out here in a little puddle jumper and my backpack didn't fit under the seat, so they out it under the plane.  Only grabbed a book, but managed to power through it.

First time in an exit row, fucking horrible seats. I hunger!

I found out my connecting gate and immediately forgot it.  Where is a monitor.

Whoa, signs in Japanese!?  Maybe the Tokyo flight isn't that weird?  Still, I can see Honolulu but Minneapolis?  Crazy.

Where is a monitor?  Where is the Mall if America?  Why is it in Minnesota?  Where is Minneapolis?  WHERE IS A MONITOR!?

Oh, here.  Terminal G?  Where the hell is that?  I only see A-E, not even an F.

Upstairs to get there?  OK, guess it's a tram.  No, it's moving sidewalks.

Wait, there's another concourse?  Icelandair?  All the way out here!?

MINNEAPOLIS!!! :argh:

Minneapolis was a Northwest hub before they got eaten by Delta, IIRC. I think they do a lot of flights to Japan. I know Memphis is the same way, the first time I went through there I was definitely :o at the signage.

MINNEAPOLIS!!! :argh:

Short side-rail history lesson: in the 1880s, many Icelanders migrated to western Canada, and the plains states of the US. Minnesota probably has more Icelanders than Iceland.

Expect 2 hours of this shit.

I am currently at my hotel in Ikebukuro, sitting on my futon and wearing my yukata because this city is so damn humid!  I am probably going to lose half my body weight just through sweat this year, ick.

12 hour flight kinda sucks, I was antsy as shit after only 3, but I watched half of the LA Nodame and then slept for like 3 hours.  I really hated getting off the plane and having to take a 1.5 hour train to Tokyo.

Kilga: Didn't want a toasted sandwich because it was in my bag for like, well, 12 hours before I ate it.

Well, it's walking and eating too. Of course this is just speculation at this point, but it probably has either to do with manners, and not eating/drinking while all up in people's faces. You can stand by the vending machines, or sit at a bench or something and you're fine. It was really sad for me because I bought a bunch of drinks while walking around Tokyo, and onigiri as snacks, but I had to stop and find a place to park/sit each time I wanted some. :<

On the plus side, beer and stuff is fine in public, but the same courtesy rules with drinking applies. :V I don't think anyone will yell or scoff at you for drinking/eating while walking, but it's just one of those things.

People in Japan are fucking busy, all the time.

You do your hair while finishing a report on your laptop all while you're on the toilet =P

My impression is that the workforce has no time to lose, and also:

It's common practice to appear busy but accessible all the time. "Irasshaimase~"

Multitasking shouldn't appear strange or rude. In a way, it may even show dedication, even if it's something simple as walking while eating/drinking
Most people are staring at me anyway so w/e

Notice how you have to be especially careful following courtesies that the locals don't necessarily follow themselves. It's just a natural bias for people to go "you're in our country you must follow our rules" even if they don't really follow them themselves; we certainly do the same here as well. Don't mind the small hypocrisy, just deal with it. Politely.

My name is Vic Viper and I can't stay out of arcades.  In fact, I believe I managed to find every arcade in Western Ikebukuro yesterday.  Gah gah gah.

Finally had my first meal in Japan that wasn't bread: some unholy combination of tonkatsu and curry, and it was **AmAzInG**

UNIQLO actually makes jeans in size, I was shocked.  They also fit great, but I don't need any jeans.

What you buy for 100 yen?  2 liters of water!  A CRUNKY bar!  A 16 pack of travel tissues!  And the most important for the gaijin: a 2 pack of handkerchiefs.  How the hell am I the only one sweating in this country?

Wandered into a Bic Camera to find a 3-prong to 2-prong converter.  8 floors of electronics and this isn't even Akihabara.  We don't need no stinking Best Buy!  Although the speakers piping in the Bic Camera jingle every 2 minutes was highly annoying.

A vending machine near my hotel has Melon Cream soda for 100 yen.  It tastes divine and has 0 calories.  I love Japan.  Oh, Melon bread too.  I had some fresh baked yesterday and almost died it was so good.

Used the Japanese bath and then promptly slept for almost 11 hours.  I think it might have been too relaxing.

Taking the Shinkansen down towards Hiroshima today.  I'll be back in Tokyo for C79, hopefully with a far superior grasp on the language by then.

Yeah, as I thought about it, it struck me as a sort of personal space issue; what's proper to do where.

Also, Vic isn't coming back from Japan, guys. He's going to get an illegal job at a construction site and live in a tiny room in the suburbs, or he's going to marry into citizenship.

After seeing this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBbrVY8hme8) I have that version of the bike theme stuck in my head.

Also realizing that Gold/Silver's bike theme is in fact a remix of Goldenrod City effectively places TWO songs stuck in my head simultaneously.

Sana: No Resort Anthem, but several Sirius machines.  I mostly played Jubeat Knit and Project Diva Arcade, which was hard because I don't listen to Vocaloid stuff :<

Slaves: No you're a babby.

The green tea machine here gives watery green tea.  Excited for bullet train!  Not excited for riding the normal train with a gigantic bag to Tokyo station.  Just relaxing a bit beforehand.

What is so unholy about katsu curry? It's pretty common.

Also if you get a chance, try some chocolate chip melon bread.

And the only song worth playing on Project Diva is Magical Sound Shower.

Never heard of it is all.  I like katsudon and curry, but together I was like

That sounds divine.  Where should I look?

Like, I was playing Melt and didn't realize until halfway through that not only had I heard that song before, but that I was quite familiar with it.  Too expensive to play it for practice, I'll look for it on PSP or something.

But bikes cost like 9999999 pokedollars, there's no way vic could have afforded one.

Is the tea cheaper than water over there in the stores?

Deleting all the posts that beat me to the pokemon jokes.

Have you lived out your subway dreams yet, Vic?

And how do people react to you?

Haven't bought any tea, but it seems to be quite cheap.  The hotel I stayed at had a green tea machine (like a water cooler but for tea) but I managed to find 2L bottles of water for 100yen.  I haven't bought tea yet since I'm not a huge fan, and I drink water like a fish.

Haven't ridden the subway yet, and there apparently isn't one in Hiroshima.  Guess I'll have to settle for the bus

Honestly, they ignore me as hard as they can.  The people handing out fliers pull their hands in when I pass by, and most people don't give me a second glance.  Granted, nobody really pays attention to anybody, but the most attention I get is when I'm about to buy something.

I'm also only 5'9"/175cm tall, so I guess I'm just not that impressive to behold, despite being built like a lifter.  I did decide to start growing out a full beard again, so maybe that'll increase my GAIJIN SMASH ability.

EDIT: Oh right, heading for station now.  Next time you hear from me I should be in Hiroshima.  Later!

Kiro and I agree, Katsu + Curry is the best shit money can buy and cheap too. seriously, this is basically the staple of Japanese food that taste great and is afforadable for us gaijins pacing through Japan hoping to snag as many stuff as we can.

Gyuudon and the various noodle dishes can be cheaper, and especially rice balls can fill you up for practically nothing.

the latter is cheap except it is empty carbohydrates. Curry and Katsu at least have some meat in it.
Gyuudon is not my cup of tea tho.

I had gyuudon last night and it was incredible.  All the food here in amazing.  Oh, and then we went to Polar Bear for gelato and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

By the way, alive and all that.  Finding internet in Japan is surprisingly tricky.

Since I've now reached my destination, I'll probably lock this thread in a day or so.
