[D2] Touhou mod - Ideas for getting started
« on: May 09, 2011, 07:58:33 AM »
D2 is fun for only so long before we start playing around with mods. So why not make our own Touhou mod. I'm thinking of picking up this project over the holidays. Start simple (editing items and enemies) and then move onto the big stuff (custom skills and areas).

I'm looking to model it similarly to MedianXL. The singular build trees can correspond to a Touhou. That will allow us to get in around 28 characters. I want to keep the items simple for now and just use the standard 3 base tiers. Item names can be editted for the flavour of Touhou. Uniques and sets can be modded for flavour as well. Sidequest areas can be modified to beome iconic places of Gensokyo. These can typically be guarded by a boss with some nice drops.

All in all, I'm just starting out. Some ideas of what you'd like to see can be posted here. I want serious suggestions that take into account of how the game will be balanced in the long run.

The first project we should probably do is modify the set items and unique items of D2 to fit more in a Touhou line of thought.  Here is a site that says all the uniques and sets.

http://www.d2tomb.com/items.shtml

Click an item and scroll down until you find unique items.  Then, look at that unique item and try to associate it with a character.  An example would be the DeathSpade, a unique axe.

Deathspade
Axe
  Req Strength: 32
  Damage: 14-18
  Durability: 24
  Req Level: 9
  +60-70% Enhanced Damage
  +4 Mana after each kill
  15% Bonus to Attack Rating
  Hit Blinds Target
  +8 to minimum Damage

We can see the 'hit blinds target' modifier right there, so we can call this either a Mystia or Rumia item, but I'm leaning more towards Mystia based on the other buffs.  Now in this case, we'll take out the +4 mana each kill and put in a +4 to light radius since Mystia prowls in the night.  Now we change the name to something more appropriate, such as... Mystia's Song, since her song is what causes night blindness.  There!  We just made a unique item for our mod.  Now all characters/items won't be so obvious, so feel free to get creative if necessary, removing and adding certain modifiers to fit the role.

If you want to give your own thoughts, send a pm to Pesco concerning your ideas or post them here.

Enemies need to shoot danmaku (MedianXL already does this with quillbeasts) :V

All head slot items should promptly be replaced with silly hats.

Well since we are replacing items and doing more scripting work, focus on:
- Set items
- Some charms
- Unique

Set items are probably easiest to create and least effort in terms of brainstorming and creation. Question is how we jam in our own graphics, Pesco you should know this.

Inserting custom graphics would come in around Ver2.xx of the mod. Goals up to Ver 1 will be items, skills and areas mod.

Okay we're getting there one step at a time. This is just a mod from the first exercise of the beginner's guide. You can carry 50 keys per stack instead of the normal 12.

To install the mod, just replace the patch_d2.mpq in your game folder with this one. But before you do
back up your own copy of it.

Pesco keeps bothering me

- Eiki's mace of judgement / hammer (?)
- Staves / orbs could be gohei of Reimu / Sanae
- Swords could be that one sword Rinnosuke found in one of the canon stories.
- Tewi charms (multiple types) or Reimu/Sanae
- Eirin's bow (DUH)
- Teleport scroll -> Sukima (?)
- Shields -> Momiji unique

The Kusanagi sword? Sure, make the Three Sacred Treasures a set while you're at it (mirror as shield, jewel as amulet, probably for paladins)

As for skill sets...I guess it would be flavored as the heroes learning the techniques of various touhous (i.e. Meiling Dragon Style, things like that). Here are some ideas.
Sorceress
Marisa (raw blasting, movement skills)
Alice (various kinds of doll pets, artful sacrifice, neat utility stuff)
Patchouli (fire/cold/elec stuff)
Mima/Byakuren?

Necromancer
Orin (gets zombies)
Medicine (poison stuff)
Komachi (scythe specialist, melee skills?)
Yuyuko?

Barbarian
Suika (bashing, maybe some kind of booze health recovery thing?)
Murasa (water-themed if possible, aoe stuff, whirlwind)
Tenshi (earthquake stuff, sword-focused?)
Rumia?

Amazon
Shou (spear/javelin skills)
Eirin (bow skills, plus support stuff?)
Youmu?

Paladin
Reimu
Byakuren
Kanako
Suwako (easy to decide what kind of characters Paladin should have, not sure what they should do though)

Assasin
Sakuya (knife-focused, throwing and stabbing, teleportation tricks?)
Meiling (martial arts stuff)
Nitori (traps)
???

Druid
Nue (shapeshifting)
Yuka (plants)
Iku (storms?)
???

Skills editing is very tricky stuff that varies from beginner level to hex editing the game code. I'm gonna try make Ver0.10 with all the uniques editted into Touhou flavour first. I'll work out balance much later :V.

Mod development thread made in Rika's: link.

We'll keep this thread for general playtest feedback. The Rika's thread will be for development feedback and suggestions.
