Serbia was disappointing, five minutes of good offensive play, no effort otherwise. Costa Rica joins the ranks of doomed teams that refuse to go down without a good fight. They lunged at Switzerland like a hungry predator out for blood, and while the fury petered out soon enough, they still gave us a respectable show.

My team is playing their farewell game today. @Rin Kagamine if nothing changes, Japan will win easily as your team has enough quality and determination to rip and tear through our pathetic defense and keep a clean sheet too. But I'm still hoping things will change. Come on, Poland. Look at Morocco or Sweden and take notes. Show me some ambition.

Pre-game edit: three players to keep an eye on.

  • Fabiański - an actual goalkeeper replacing Szczęsny. He might actually save a shot or two!
  • Kurzawa - a young and ambitious midfielder from our domestic league. I'm expecting him to perform decently.
  • Glik - recently injured, didn't play in the first game, came on as late substitute in the second. He's our best defender, but in fact no one knows for sure if he's back to optimal form after the injury. Putting a giant question mark next to him.

Apparently Japan is playing without multiple first team players? Why? Are they really this confident about defeating us?

Japan probably wants fresh legs for England/Belgium and can even advance with a loss if Senegal also wins so I think they're just gonna play for the tie tonight

A dangerous calculation to make on a tournament where a single mistake can decide your fate. You're through by virtue of yellow cards! Well done anyway. Few people expected Japan to advance from this group.

Honestly, the last 15 minutes of this game were an absolute disgrace, everyone just standing about, not even trying; heck, not even pretending to try. Also Peszko actually on the pitch - the guy who only went to the World Cup because Lewandowski likes him, and is otherwise two levels below everyone else. I'm just so glad our participation in this tournament is over. Get out of my sight. I can finally watch other games with a calm heart.

Was a huge gamble indeed for Japan. Quite surprised they went for the gamble.

Tonight's match between England vs Belgium is going to be interesting. Because the #1 of the group will face Japan and #2 will face Colombia in the 1/8 finals. Personally I would rather face Japan than Colombia. But you will never final. Maybe Japan hasn't shown us their final forms yet.

I am looking at the Play Off tree and man the 1/8 matches are really juicy. Urugua vs Portugal, France vs Argentina, etc etc.

Tomorrow we want to perform well but the priority is not to win - apparently a quote from the Belgian manager.

Considering the winner of group G will end up together with all the aforementioned juggernauts, there are reasons to suspect both teams will be deliberately playing to lose. In case this happens, I'll be primarily watching Tunisia - Panama, only switching over to Belgium - England if there's any action. (yes, I'm watching both games at the same time; an old notebook is proving very useful)

Well; England took 1 shot accurately at goal all game and didn't even have their team Captain and a player who's looking good for the Golden Boot on the pitch.

Safe to say England were not trying at all.

Pretty nice job France, but I'm still going to scold their defenders for leaving Di Maria with so much space and forgetting about Aguero. Argentina's defense was literally a sieve though. I'm pretty sure France would have scored more if they had to. And why did Messi leave all the quality offensive players on the bench?

And here's Pavard's goal. Pure beauty.

I'm not really expecting much of Portugal - Uruguay given what we've seen from these teams so far, but a lucky early goal could force this game open. So let's hope for one.

Following predictions I will be making based on the current play off tree:

1/8 Final winners
- Portugal
- Mexico
- Belgium
- Spain
- Croatia
- Sweden
- England

1/4 Final winners
- Portugal
- Belgium
- Spain
- England

Semi Final winners
- Portugal
- England

World Champion
- Portugal

So; if Portugal lose to Uraguay; there's a good chance it's Coming Home?

By the way. 2-1 Uraguay.

Edit: Ronaldo getting himself banned from Quarters with a Yellow even if Portugal did somehow get through right in the dying moments totally sealed Portugal's fate regardless of the end result. Portugal without Ronaldo is nothing; so even if they did equalize and win in extra/pens, they'd be screwed next round.

Also is this the World Cup of desperate teams putting the Goalie up? Also the Ref sure is taking his time to end this game.

This was not a great game for making bets anyway. Such a close call. Your predictions for tomorrow have a much better chance of coming true. (though personally I'm sort of hoping Russia can cause another upset)

Despite two goals this is pretty bad so far, with Spain on the lead most of the time despite taking zero shots on goal, and generally playing like Greece in 2008, while Russia simply forgot what pressing is. Fortunately the last few minutes are a glimmer of hope for more excitement in the second half. Highlights so far include Cherchesov looking the other way while the penalty was taken. Now it's just a matter of time before Akinfeev makes a decisive blunder

So... uh... England v Russia is now the expected route? Or have I completely got the possible matches wrong?

I wonder if there is some magic animal somewhere who is predicting all of this.

Here's the current ladder for everyone's convenience. Russia - England is a possible semifinal. In general, getting out of 1/8th really opens everyone's way towards the final in the bottom half of the ladder. It's entirely possible someone will reach the final by virtue of beating Switzerland and Denmark in the quarters and semis. Quite unusual. Myself, I'd love to see an underdog world champion... even England.
