So what I thought was my gift was actually a gift for my stepmother that my dad had shipped to me to keep her from knowing about it. My actual gift arrived today.

Sadly I'll have to open it on Christmas Eve, because I work Tuesday-Thursday of next week and will be too tired to bother with anything when I get home those days.

Christmas Eve is when you're supposed to open it.

Is this an MotK tradition, or just a non-US tradition? I know they open the gifts on the 24th here; back home, it was on the 25th.

Whether there's a tradition or not, I think there's much more of a nice anticipation that you get when you open gifts on the 25th. Waking up and opening your gifts with your family and whatnot has a really nice charm and feel-good atmosphere to it.

Eh, now you got me. The CPSS description goes for 25th, but over here Christmas Eve is the night of the 24th, that's when we open stuff.
I didn't really realise Americans do it on the 25th when I posted that.

The same family feeling and atmosphere are around when opening presents with the whole family after dinner

I'm all for this, especially when there's the 'can't sleep much so excited' feeling as you go to sleep on the 24th.  (Or at least I have that feeling still.  I suppose my inner child's not dead yet.  =D)

Of course, there's nothing wrong with doing things differently from how others do it.  It's all about enjoying yourself and the company you're keeping for the holidays and stuff, yes?

Yeah, I've done both, and I think the dates don't particularly matter - it's that warm, Whoville feeling that does. That, and the pleasure of stuffing the wrapping paper under the couch as you sprawl out from eating too much and spend the day watching the Aliens films.

Yeah, this 24th vs. 25th thing really doesn't seem like much of an issue. I open on the night of the 24th which, after a large dinner and my parents going to church, lands around 9pm. Opening gifts takes about an hour and then we spend time judging each other's gift choices. By the time all arguments are resolved it's usually around 1am which is... the morning of the 25th, and perfectly within reason for everyone to start opening presents. Even if you're asleep and open presents around 7 (or whenever people get up) you still wouldn't hear from me until you got a chance to report your gift so ultimately everyone finds out around the same time.
The only exceptions are people living far to the west of me, and people who like staying awake to catch Santa in his rounds.

Different cultures have different traditions kids.

Just don't open your presents before Christmas Eve! I guess that makes more sense right?

I got a rather large package from England, tempted to just rip it open now since the outer wrapping is partially torn anyway.

Carrier Package has arrived. Thought i could narrow down who sent it by looking at when people said they sent their stuff out. My sender may have been smart enough to not say so exactly on the same day as mailing.

I guess it's just a cultural thing. I can't imagine having to drag everyone out of bed in the morning before opening gifts (beginning with myself). We wait until midnight before we open ours, so it's sort of on the 25th, but we have dinner at 11 PM so that it's also right after dinner. Then we can doo fun things all night!

I'm going to be so unimpressed with my Postal Service if The Package fails to arrive before christmas eve.
I apologize if it does. And, uh, pardon my crappy handwriting.
