I took a quick look at Katsugeki Kidan 3 just now because, hey, a hacking challenge and Momiji? How could I resist? So, whatever, I figure the other games probably do something similar but... All text appears to be stored as PNG images in the data_b folder. You're looking for "msg_01a.png", "msg_01b.png", so forth.

Never fear! There's an encryption on this sucker and I know how to get past it. But it's bloody complicated and took the better part of 5 seconds to crack, so I apologize in advance for the technical mumbo-jumbo and hyper-complex explanation to follow.

1- Get out your trusty hex editor.
2- Open the file.
3- BLOOD SACRIFICE TO THE SQUID GOD!!! @_@
4- Here's the tough part: remove the first byte at the start of the file (a 'Z').
5- Save the changes. This part is important or all your work will be in vain.
6- Open the image.

Seriously, why even bother? ;P At least XOR the file with something...

So here's what those images look like.

I can't read moon-runes. So I can't translate this gibberish. But at this point it should be a trivial matter to translate. Anyone up for it?

Edit: Woah. Just found a kick-ass japanese OCR thingie that does pretty awesome work on the game's files. I may gave this a whack, but if anyone can read japanese it'd go way easier than my copy-pasting characters into a kanji dictionary. Probably gonna take months otherwise...

Sadly, no. But these things have to start somewhere, somehow.
(And hey, it's Momiji, so to be honest I have no clue why this isn't translated yet...)

If anyone can read japanese and wouldn't mind providing a translation of the text on a couple of images, I can put the images up on some webspace I have laying around. After that, I can have a patch ready in very, very little time. Which would be a "yes" to your question. Just... a little delayed.

I wouldn't exactly call myself a master of the language, but I've taken a look at the dialogue boxes you posted, and it doesn't seem like it would be too tough to translate. So yeah, unless someone else is interested, I'd be down for doing it.

Very epic. Momiji approves. I've made the images available right here. The game dialog is mainly in the msg_*.png files. Much of the rest is interface-related stuff (eg, game over screen, music room, status screen, spellcard names...). I shouldn't have any trouble editing the images so I really just need an english listing of the text, though if anyone wants to give that a shot too, be my guest. Please post so if that's the case so we all use the same spacing/font/etc. to avoid inconsistencies.

I'd be glad to - in fact a quick cursory look through KK2's files show they use the exact same "protection" as KK3. KK1 probably does the same thing too. Some image editing work and a tiny bit of hex editor manipulations aside, it'd really just be a matter of translating what the text says into english. Unfortunately I can't do the actual translating (my japanese is limited at best... >_>) so work on those two other games will also depend on if others want to lend their help with them as well.

Thank you very much for the work so far! At this rate it seems like we'll have this game translated in no time at all.

Edit: Meh, why not. Here's the translated atelier.png. Right-click, save as (it won't display because it's not "really" a png, so save it to disk directly) and replace the file in KK3's "data_b" folder with it. Voila - Nitori's workshop is now in english!

As an aside, I can't seem to find where the dialog in the demo1_6.png and demo2_5.png files shows up. It seems like it may've been something left-over from a demo version of the game? Oh well, if that's the case it's still not wasted effort as the same bits of text show up here and there in the "main" dialog and I can just copy-paste what I've done in those files. It's also allowed me to establish a few templates for the rest of the dialog in the game, so there's that too.

I've also modified the executable so it no longer requires AppLocal to run. Not a big deal as I figure everyone's got it installed but that little bit was bothering me...

I'll leave the final choice of translation of the term 秘奥書 to you. The closest translation is "arcane book", which conveys the feel, but doesn't fit that good. Another choice is "technique manual" (or just "manual"), which makes more sense in the context. My translations feature both translations.

This is area near Kyuuten waterfall has been used as a training ground since the old times.

Tengu have been training to scale the walls here to learn new techniques. You should do the same, Momiji. Practice wall-jumping and you might learn a new technique.

If it's too hard for you, you can leave through the gates to the left. You'll be able to try this stage again later if you want.

I feel there are some ores there as well. You can visit me at the workshop later with the ores you've collected and money, and I'll upgrade your gear for you.

Just jumping off the walls won't get you anywhere here. Looks like you'll have to plan jumps from the opposite walls as well.

As far as I know, there should be an arcane book describing a secret technique at the top. Try and go for it, it should be valuable.

Again, it seems there's some ore up there as well, so visit me at the workshop later. Of course, you'll need to bring me money as well - life isn't that easy.

Looks like you'll have to lift the seal from the exit in order to leave this place.

Judging by kappa reports, the keys are hidden somewhere over there inside rocks. They also report there are also strong youkai sealed there.

Some of them were released by my fellow kappas, it seems, but other seals were too strong for them. They really didn't help us here.

This magatama-shaped [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magatama] sensor will inform you about the seal status. Once it makes a good sound, you can proceed to the exit.

I know this may sound like a pain to do, but this is a good training to improve your skills, so do your best.

Scarlet Dragon Tail Slash [Kouryuu Bizan] manual should be around here somewhere.

If you learn this technique, you'll be able to fight in mid-air.
You really should get that manual.

You'll have to go through another round of hard wall-climbing, but this technique will simplify battles a lot, so I want you to be patient and keep trying.

But don't worry, you can do it, Momiji. See, just kick the wall when you approach it to jump back.

I think there are other technique manuals hidden around Gensokyo. You should try and find them, they can increase your strength.

This technique covers a wide area and will reach many danmaku around you. It will really help you with the oncoming fights.

Oh, I almost forgot.
You cannot use any of your skills here, so you won't be able to complete this stage the way you usually do.

That aside, if you feel that enemies are too hard for you, don't torture yourself and visit my workshop to upgrade your equipment.

You will also help funding me by doing that.

I haven't finished doing all the kabe_msg files yet but so far so good.
Most of the skill names were just fine, though I did have to shorten Inugami's Lightning Slash slightly to make the text fit (I opted for "Inugami's Gale Cut" - any longer wouldn't fit...). I also had to recreate the window for ex_mes.bmp (the background is no longer translucent) but that's just a minor near-unnoticeable detail.

Blue ore is used for upgrades that reduce the damage you receive from melee and ranged attacks. You can find some along the way as well. It's sold for people who have extra money. Remember that upgrading requires money as well.

Book of secrets: thousand gives you 1000 experience points. Good for cases when you just need a small push to the next level.

Book of secrets: ten thousand gives you 10000 experience points. Good for people who hate leveling. This book is expensive though.

Hourai elixir will instantly restore your full health should you die. However, you can only carry one Hourai elixir at a time.

Teaches you "White Wolf's Iron Claw". Command: Up+B while on the ground. SP cost: 2. Attack power: C. Performs a melee range claw attack, then moves you back a step.

Teaches you "Double Gale Fang". Command: Up+B while on the ground. SP cost: 3. Attack power: C. Shoots 2 Gale Fangs. Bullets fly out up and down.

Teaches you "Dragon Flight Fang". Command: B in mid-air. SP cost: 4. Attack power: B. Mid-air slash that cuts through bullets as well. Combine with Dragon Maul Fang for maximum awesomeness.

I've opted for abbreviations for Momiji's stats because it was hard to make the names fit in the space the interface gave to write them down. The rest is pretty much identical (I like the "maximum awesomeness" bit ) save for small aesthetic corrections.

At this point, a third of the files are done. And really, almost half of those remaining don't have all that much text to translate/edit. It's hard to say just how far along things have come but I'd say we've got a good 30-40% of the game translated by this point. This is going pretty fast, I have to say.

I think two textboxes of dialog are missing in msg_01a.png, right before Momiji licks Luna (admittedly, an interesting gambit... >_>), though.

Haven't heard of "Butsu Torikku Kyouko-chan" before (...Kyouko as in Kyouko Kasodani? Wut wut wut?! Gatling Cat is just too epic. ). That sounds pretty sweet. I couldn't find anything on it though, not even a single screenshot. :x Nevermind, I'm an idiot. GC's site doesn't seem to have much on it either but, yay, Kyouko-chan! Katsugeki Kidan Online is also news to me. Is that Reisen and Kaguya? Looks pretty sweet.

Edit: I think I've found a bug of some sort. I beat stage 1-1, stage 1-2, skipped Nitori, beat Luna, stage 1-3... and found myself fighting Luna again rather than Star.
