[Mahjong] TSUMO! *smacks down tile* - You should join too!
« on: February 15, 2012, 02:21:00 PM »

I blame Pesco and TranceHime for getting me addicted to Mahjong and lately more people have showed interest in the game. Yesterday we had actually 2 tables running for a surprising reason. The most difficult barrier people have with Mahjong is understand the rules and hands. But thankfully we got plenty of players who can help you out with that. Also the site we found explains it very clear and easily how it is played (far clearer than the regular wiki in my opinion).

[ How to join ]
Important to know we play Japanese Riichi Mahjong and not Chinese Mahjong. The link at the end of this post explains the rules kind of. To join: click the link to our lobby (http://tenhou.net/0/?L4739), you will see this link appearing after a short wait.
[attach=1]

Fill in a username (max characters is 8, some usernames might be taken because they are registered). Select your voice: 男 for male and 女 for female. Press 'OK'
[attach=2]

After another short wait, you will see this. Explaining:
[attach=3]

Red boxes
1 - Number of people present in the lobby
2 - The game rooms. Note that each row of buttons is a fixed room with certain rules. We will spare you the technical details. TL DR: Use the right button on the third row for regular games. (For mahjong knowers, this is East and South round). People who want a quick game can use the left button. (Only East round).
3 - If you drop this menu-box and select the highlighted option, you can play against CPU to practise your skills or get to know the game.

Orange box - Spectate ongoing games. You will be few hands behind the live play (to prevent cheating, duh).
Green box - Replay list. All the games you play are stored as links which can be shared and viewed. Copy/paste to share or click to view.

[ Getting started ]
  • Standard Mahjong you need 4 players.
  • The game room will show  1:0 / 2:0 if people click on it. First number indicates waiting people, 2nd number indicates the number of people playing.
  • A game will automatically launch when four players are 'clicked in'

[ Gameplay notes ]
All the buttons are in Japanese, even in game when you want to 'call' tiles or 'win'. Thank god they are written in Katakana so it is easy to memorize them.
TextNameDesc
チーChiiCall last discarded tile for sequence. Only from your left-hand-player.
ポンPonCall last discarded tile for three-of-a-kind from any player.
カンKanCall four-of-a-kind from your hand or on a last discard from any player. Upgrading an already called pon is possible if you draw it yourself. Press the tile on your right corner.
リーチRiichiDeclare reach/ready. Your hand is concealed and waiting for the winning tile. Tsumo / Ron button will light up when you can win.
ロンRonDeclare win on a last discard.
ツモTsumoDeclare win on a self draw.
パスPasuIgnore/pass chii, pon, kan etc. To ignore a riichi/tsumo/ron, simply discard a tile.

[ Last words ]

- Don't be afraid to play. We won't rob your money when you lose. If you play more you can get better in no-time.
- Watch the series: 真雀鬼, Akagi or Saki if you want to become badass at Mahjong (protip of Pesco & TranceHime) ((Or just for amusement))

Might play sometime. I'm no good at it, though, and Chinese rules might be a bit different.

I'll find time to get into this. However, I feel like I've adapated a whole new playstyle since I've only been playing with AI for a very long time.

We spawn quite frequently daily tables from #dots-meido (IRC), show up in the channel to see who is fancy for it. If you want to challenge the great Helepolis you'll have to wait until I am around. Otherwise you can just go kick Pesco's ass. Even Thanuris, who never played it understood the basic rules within 48 hours, so learning barrier is definitely low when you got people around you.

The truest ballers play on JanRyuMon,
--> Googles JanRyuMon
--> Ends up on a site looking very kidzstylez and bling
--> Youtubes JanRyuMon matches
--> Finds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRQplYGkLLE
--> Notices the fingernails and all kind of useless details for a manly mahjong game.

A true "baller" in mahjong needs no hipster bling to kick ass.

We'll tutor you for it. It is quite easy actually. The yaku hands are just something to learn over time.

What are the main differences between Chinese and Japanese Mahjong?

The main differences are the number of tiles, typically 16 over 14, and the including of Flower tiles, which have different purposes depending on ruleset. Furthermore, you're not restricted on what kinds of hands you are formed. Non-special hands are calculated through basic point counting. All the other intrinsic differences are dependent on ruleset, for example Hong Kong mahjong and Taiwanese mahjong are slightly different from each other.

Declaring tenpai in chinese mahjong is roughly the same as riichi but without the 1000 point deposit.
