Just out of curiosity, do you get a communication error if you just hadn't been added to the whitelist yet, or is there some specific message you get? I think I sent Stuffman a PM asking to be added a week or two ago, and I dunno if it's just me screwing up on my end. It's entirely likely that that's the case.  :V

Strafe has mentioned that he has had a bit of difficulty with adding people to the whitelist recently due to a replacement of a critical plugin (Essentials) with a not-so-versatile alternative. Stuffman has tried to reinstate it but faced Permissions errors, and with his trip it may be some time until it is fixed.
The other option is to manually add people in, but that requires taking down the server for a brief period of time, editing a file, and then restarting it. Moreover we don't have MCMA installed thanks to problems it has caused us in the past, so the procedure is a bit harder.

I'll look into it for you. Just PM me your username and I'll add you to the list.

Without Essentials, I do have to take a roundabout method to adding people to the list. For some reason, the "/whitelist add" command responds with "I'm sorry, Dave. I cannot let you do that." I wish I was joking.  Anyway, I can modify the list manually and tell the server to reload it. I have yet to see if this method actually works, because the person I added earlier has yet to actually join the server. :V

All else fails, I can just restart the server after modifying the whitelist. One way or another, we'll get you in there.

I'm trying to join the server again, after seeing it doesn't use the phoenix terrain mod anymore, and I get a communication error. Does it have to do with the whitelist changes mentioned earlier in this page?

Did you update to 1.8+ yet? We are still on 1.7.3 and don't intend to upgrade until 1.9.
