Title: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: CenturyEgg on February 22, 2016, 12:48:28 AM
For those of us who don't live in Japan, any of you guys have started making plans for a trip to Reitaisai 13? Due to the proximity of golden week, it might be good to start settling accomodations and air tickets soon.

That being said, maiden trip to RTS for me. Open to any meetups post RTS or during RTS itself. I intend to cosplay during RTS.

Con prep discussion I guess?

I applied for a circle space as well as Vento, but they won't announce results for a little while yet. I'll probably show up in some capacity at any rate.

We'll probably meet in person then! I'm friends with Vento irl since we are both from Singapore heh.

Better start booking now before March fully kicks in. Golden Week == suffering. Including Shinkansen trips/reservations.

Vento also being at RTS? Oh boy! I get to meet some new MoTK people this year. Hungrybookworm, CenturyEgg, Vento. . .  awesome!

Looks like we're gathering enough people for a adventuring party haha. Would it be difficult to find each other in RTS though? I mean, I suppose the fact we are foreigners is pretty obvious but RTS should have its fair share of foreigners right?

I for one nominate Amakasu Barley Tenji's fabulous afro as a beacon for the MoTK gathering

Difficult not. Especially not for you. Vento, Forza and I will be probably inside before the regular crowd, as we will get Circle Entry in order to prepare the booths and such.

So your chance of finding us is by visiting our booths or spot me/Forza roaming (Forza and I shouldn't be hard to spot).

Edit A true gathering would be immense difficult, assuming we need to tend the booth + do sales. So guessing you'll only be able to meet us one-by-one.  :ohdear:

I'm a bit harder to spot, being 5'2 and most likely lurking around the doujin novel section, but if you see a short white girl darting around or carrying a mountain of reimari books, come say hi! (My friend can't make it so it'll be a solo trip for me...)

If any of you haven't booked accommodation yet, make that your top priority! I just bought mine and it took ages to find something decent.

A note to people in the US, it seems like there's a bit of a price war going on between Detla and American for Japanese flights right now, with Detla offering some discounts for Japanese flights up to early May. A good time to pick up tickets if you're considering.

Since I travelled more than half the country I won't be revisiting the same places again randomly though. Have you actually decided you want to go to JP + RTS ?

Edit: Reason I said that is that I only have 7 effective days for my trip this year instead of 12 last year (new job constraints). Assuming I will suffer the first day from being tired + jet lag, I don't think I will be moving much away from Tokyo. I could be actually using Tokyo as a central location and do (half)day trips from there.

Haven't decided myself yet either what I am suppose to do. All I did now was secure my presence for RTS (so I have a hotel from 6th until the morning of 9th (leaving day).

Possible, but needs to be tightly planned as in specific date + time and everybody needs to be around / able to. I learned from Forza and Warugaki that eating with more than 4 people anywhere is going to be extremely difficult. As in, not many places offer wide tables / spaces for that.

I think firing away dates is best done once we all have our personal plan completed.

If we can get a time, place, and head count nailed down, then it's entirely possible we place a reservation somewhere.

Some of the people I met last year want to invite me out for food and drinks and stuff, so I might be a bit busy around Reitaisai. But I will be in Tokyo for three weeks or so before then, so if anyone just wants to hang out and chat at the end of April/start of May, then I'd be up for that, even if it's one-on-one. (I also love karaoke cough cough.)

Sounds like a good idea! Confirm that a little closer to the date i think. I think we'll have to trouble you for a food recommendation though haha.

Argh man, I'll be there only from 6th (arrival) to the 11th of May, so unless it is right before RTS that will be abit tricky...

As for free dates, most of the other days will be spent touring around Tokyo at a very leisurely pace for me. I promised to go shopping with a friend after RTS at Shinjuku area but that shouldn't cramp my schedule too much, if at all. After all, one of my main goals for hitting RTS is to meet and get to know other people outside of the usual group I am acquainted with heh.

Edit: Another friend (a photographer) is considering checking out hacostadium, a large cosplay studio, so that will take a full day for photoshoot if we decide to do that. If anyone is interested though, we can definitely hang out together.

Hello! I have read this forum for a long time, but have not joined until now.

I will start working towards my doctorates after this summer, so I've decided to attend Reitaisai 13! I don't speak much Japanese, so I really want to have some fun with some english speaking folks while I'm in Tokyo. I'm interested in karaoke, museums, shopping, dining, drinking, onsens, and practically anything! If any of the MotK members would let me join them, I'll treat the group to a round of sake  :D

Hello! +1 to the motk search party haha. I'm sure we'll meet on the RTS location. Maybe on the day itself we should post identifiers here. Like OOTD or something, so it is easier to find each other (especially for non boothers)

As for a meetup after Rts, I'm definitely open to the idea haha. Maybe we could go doujin hunting together at Akiba and have a meal afterwards?

Edit: Seeing that my photographer friend can't make it for this RTS, I don't think the hacostadium trip I mentioned earlier will materialize. Unless of course anyone here is interested in it and doesn't mind indulging in abit of cosplay photography haha.

I'll be in Tokyo for 5 nights (should arrive on the night of the 6th) and my itinerary is wide open. I just googled hacostadium, and I definitely want to go! I was thinking about bringing along a Nikon D3100 (although its awfully bulky), but I would bring along a good camera and wouldn't mind doing a photo shoot.

I don't know who I'd cosplay as now that I've cut my hair, but it still might be fun. Who will you be cosplaying as, CenturyEgg?
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: CenturyEgg on March 17, 2016, 03:39:01 AM
I'll be cosplaying as Tenshi for Reitaisai. A camera would be pretty good to bring to Reitaisai I think! Hacostadium would require abit more equipment like a couple of speedlites and pocket wizards. (At least according to my friend) I haven't decided exactly what to bring for the Hacostadium shoot cause my friend cancelled on me, but I suppose a half day pass isn't bad. I could bring one extra costume in my luggage or something, if you don't mind doing photography for a guy :V

I think It'll be better to sort of the Hacostadium plans via pm so we don't clog up the forum tho haha

I don't consider my self a circle and am more like indebted to Ryuu & Waru but it seems their space is at か23a + b.

There is a very convenient map someone or group is making every year of the entire Reitaisai. Far better than the one you get from the Catalogue. Is that one up already?

It usually shows up after the official catalogue comes out, so it'll probably appear in April.

ZUN's attending again this year... :3 if he brings a new Hifuu CD along I might have to start queuing at 6am.

Speaking in more detail with regard to battleplans, when the layout becomes available it would be wise to plan a movement route to visit the booths? Do any of the veteran Reitaisai participants have any tips on how to best tackle hitting multiple booths that may be quite popular (Or likely to sell out)? Or should I resign myself to not getting first picks especially since my first 15-20 minutes will be spent getting into costume.
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: Helepolis on March 21, 2016, 11:50:21 AM
Hmmm, expect extremely popular regular circles to sell out 30 - 40minutes when the event starts. Larger or famous circles might rack plenty of stock but still I bet about an hour for them too. Ask Forza about his knowledge of popular music circles :V. ZUN last year sold out in about an hour if I am not mistaking.

As Reitaisai rules go, you're not suppose to be in cosplay costume before the event, at least that is what they ask you (and quite a lot of people ignore). Cosplaying is set to a fixed time somewhere close to noon where the participants have plenty of time to change / dress up. I wouldn't be worrying about this part much. It is probably most leisure moment of the event as far as I have seen. Last year I had it easy. I just put on an afro, 30 seconds work. :V

Planning a route to each booth is highly advised for two reasons: Enjoyment and efficiency. The way it is: there are halls 東-1 2 3  on one side and 4 5 6 on the other. The two sides divide the circle listing into Latin characters A 02a etc or Japanese あ 02a etc. All hiragana marked circles are stowed into one side of the building and the normal character on the other side. So if you have 5 favourite circles at hiragana and 5 at other, you might want to first handle one group before moving. It won't be a disaster when you miss a booth or go random through them, though you don't want to cross sides all the time. Once the map is up, you can see what I mean.

Unless of course there are circles you must visit because of sell-out danger. Then well yea, unless you can get them in the stores post-reitaisai, I wouldn't really stress if I were you. You could always ask Forza to deliver them later on.

My own personal goal: Set a few booths to visit for greetings. Stroll a lot and enjoy. I usually don't buy much from Reitaisai so for me the enjoyment of walking around and observing is quite delightful.

Wait so if I am not misunderstanding you here, you enter the hall at about 10-11am for normal participants but you cant change til 12? If that is the case it might actually work pretty okay for me hmmmm I can go queue for stuff from A-One  and Tokyo active neets first

A-One usually doesn't sell out, but NEETs did for their new release last time. If you hit them up before 1, it should be fine.

Those of you who wanted that map of Reitaisai with the circle names added, looks like it's already up! (http://www.green.dti.ne.jp/maisan/gensoukyou/reitaisai13_map.html) Get planning!

When making your battle plan, I recommend prioritising circles with event only goods or extras first, in order of how badly you need them in your life. The huge wall circles will have their stuff in melonbooks/toranoana afterwards, and usually stock enough to last pretty far into the event. (My goal? Shop my socks off, then visit people in the afternoon.)

Also those of you interested in other fandoms, there's a kancolle event, a madoka magica event and a magic the gathering tournament on at the same time. I've got some friends in the kancolle event, so I'm wondering whether it's worth grabbing the catalogue for that too and going in to see them...

Fast map is fast. Time to start checking if my favourite artists are attending or not.

Edit:

Is it me or is it going to be quite crowded this year? Looking at the map and comparing it with 2015 it seems Hall 3 is completely lost. Corporate booths got also squashed against the regular circles. And all the circles are more packed against each other.

I was nervous that there would be a Touhou bust before my first trip to japan, so I'm happy to see a lot of my favorite music circles attending. Hoping to buy as many rock, jazz, and metal albums as I can fit in my luggage (and maybe a game or three) ! What price should I expect full-length music CDs to sell for?

What kind of goods can we expect at the booths run by Forza, Helepolis and Vento? (Congrats on your booths :D )
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016

Most CDs run for 1000 yen, although it can range from 500 to 1500 depending on format (pressed/CD-R) and number of discs.

I've asked someone to design a new plastic file folder design and someone else offered to draw a (mostly textless) comic, so I should have those two items if everything goes well.
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: Helepolis on March 24, 2016, 11:56:32 AM
Thanks for the congratulations but I didn't do any thing so I haven't really achieved anything.  I need to purely thank Waru for accepting my offer to be a "circle member". I am joining as booth helper only. But thanks. At Ryuuichi and Warugaki's booth you expect doujin manga only.

Also, don't worry. Close to Reitaisai most artists release on Pixiv or Twitter a flyer kind of post / image which displays everything they are selling and for how much. That way you can make a rough estimation for things.

Helpful tip: Carry 100 yen coins and 500 aside from only bills. Having bills is no problem, but artists don't always have enough change in the beginning so it would both help them and you. Well, don't worry much about this but when something is 400 yen, paying 4 coins or 1x 500 is easier than giving them a 1000 bill.

Sounds good, Forza. Looking forward to picking up a file and comic (especially considering I can't read moonrunes)

You're pretty modest, Helepolis. You'll be aiding the artists who have produced work you really enjoy (i assume). I'd imagine it makes the experience easier for the circle and the consumers. You will have achieved supporting something you feel is worthwhile... You're also driving sales since I'll stop by the booth to make a purchase now (and not paying with a 1000 yen note; your tips rock!)

You need to physically purchase the 'Reitaisai Catalogue' for about 2000 円 which is sold practically in any major doujin store (Animate, Toranoa, Melons. Example, the old 2015 catalogue (https://www.toranoana.jp/mailorder/article/04/0030/29/69/040030296972.html)). It both functions as a guide (list of all the booths, rules and advertisement for events) + as a valid entrance ticket.

When you enter the Big Sight 東 Halls, there will be a lot of staff shouting you to hold up your catalogue visibly. Show it to them and enter the halls. That is it. Same rule applies when moving between the Latin and Kana booth halls, more shouting staff members (ry.

Circle members get a special sticker which they attach to their body, clothing or badge. (These aren't sold. The ones you see on the internet are black market  (https://twitter.com/7474ringo/status/712143670074408961) illegally offered).

While in Tokyo, hit Akihabara and visit the stores to look for it. One catalogue per person required. Multiple people can't enter with the same catalogue. If you fail to buy one before the event (which is hard unless you're like 1 day before the event in Tokyo), you can buy them at the event, but this would be wasting your precious time.

My itinerary has been completed and the 2nd of May + 6th of May afternoon there is potential free time for me. Meaning any group activity or get-together is possible on these two dates.

I have no specific wishes or places to go in Tokyo, so I'll leave it up to those who wish to propose something.

Regarding dinner, I think it is perhaps nice to have a dinner together, but we need to make sure our party-size is known so Forza can effectively judge a good place to eat?

Post by: N-Forza on March 30, 2016, 09:52:24 AM
It's a combination of finding a good place to eat and making reservations. A rough budget would be nice to know too, since it's real hard to get decent yakuniku for less than 3000 yen a head (just an example).

I just realized that the 2nd and 6th are in fact work days, so I'd only be available for evenings, but that means I could do dinner easily enough, maybe hit up an arcade afterwards. If we meet up in Ikebukuro, I know the doujin shops are open there fairly late if anyone wanted to do some pre-gaming.

Great! I land on the morn of the 6th and should get my hotel by about 2-3 pm in the afternoon. I don't have anything planned so dinner plans are good for me.

As for budget I don't really have an opinion. I'll adjust expenditure for food for the rest of the trip accordingly. I expect at least a one or two decent meals so it shouldn't be too much of a problem for me.

Speaking of an eatery, my cousin gave me a reccomendation. Sharing it here but it looks like this may be quite expensive. She's always had expensive taste :/

It doesn't help that it's in the middle of one of the ritziest districts in Japan. I'm not exactly a gourmet, but yakitori has never struck me as a "foodie" dish.

It seems that the Hakurei Sake Brewery out from Kyoto will be selling special sake at the event as well, for those of you who are into that sort of thing: https://twitter.com/maisan_t/status/718737417809702913

"Ibuki" for 2200 yen and "Musou" for 3800 yen.

The worst part about buying something like that is probably I couldn't bear to open it and drink it. So it'll probably become rice vinegar at some point. The fact I live in a place with room temperatures around 28-29 degrees with no wine chiller probably doesn't help too.

btw Forza, how far ahead should we confirm the dinner on the 6th? I think we should set a deadline to confirm attendance for the various people heading up to JP in time for it.

Ah, no need to fuss about it now then. Thanks in advance!

Speaking of which, how many of you guys are planning to go queue for Zun's new CD? I wasn't expecting an official release but I think I'll pass up on it this time.

Also, is there a... maximum number of copies you are allowed to purchase from each circle? I've got a few friends back home interested in overlapping circles and I'm concerned it will look weird if i swept 5 of the same CDs/illustration books from the table. I don't know if there's any unspoken agreement for Reitaisai con-goers with regards to this so if anyone knows I'd appreciate some advice.

I have bought 10 of the same item on multiple occasions. Unless it's from a popular wall circle and they've announced a purchase limit, they rarely restrict how much money you can throw at them.

Oh hey, someone boxed up the map into categories. This looks helpful for general browsing once you have sniped the specific circles you want to greet.

http://blog.livedoor.jp/tohomemory/archives/47371820.html

Also, I realized too late there was a special addon ticket which could be purchased for early entry to use the changing rooms. QAQ Such a pity but noting that down as a reference for subsequent Reitaisai (If I have the fortune to participate again of course)

I'm going for it *flexes muscles*

Best of luck!

Hi, I've been an occasional lurker, but since Reitaisai happens to coincide with my (extended) golden week trip to Tokyo, I figured I take advantage of the opportunity and attend, especially since this is probably the last time in years I'm going to be on this side of the world. As far as events in Japan go, I've only been to a small one in Fukuoka, and I found that one pretty overwhelming. I'd be really happy to meet up with some people from this forum, if you don't mind.

In my case, I cannot attend the event, but I'm interested in a couple of things that are going to be released on the Reitaisai.

About that, I'm wondering which people are acting as proxy here to buy things directly from the event (instead of waiting until the articles can be purchased in stores), for those who can't attend.

I'd love to join for dinner. Thanks for extending the invitation.

As far as Reitaisai activities, there are a couple doujin circles I'd theoretically like to get books from, but I have no idea how popular they are. (One of them is up against the wall so I'm assuming popular...) I'll probably try to hit those first thing. Aside from that, I don't really have any idea what to expect so it's kind of hard to formulate a battle plan. How easy is it to just kind of...browse?
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: N-Forza on April 25, 2016, 01:34:28 PM
Not all wall circles are so popular as to sell out right away, but it probably would be a good idea to hit them first.

Browsing is totally doable, although it's easier near the end of the event when the crowds start to thin out. You might want to use that map Vento posted earlier to help find areas you'd probably like browsing more.

Okay, here's the details for the jazz concert: http://jamming.kakeruichi.mydns.jp/

Starts at 6 PM on the 7th. 2000 yen entry + purchase of one drink (500 yen probably). It'll be at Shimo-Kitazawa, accessible from Shibuya and Shinjuku. You need to contact them ahead of time to make reservations, so if anyone wants to go, let me know and I'll handle it.

Bands:
Twitter Tohobu loves SOS -Sound of Swing- (Basically a combination of members from two different circles. tanigon, from Twitter Tohobu is fantastic)
Accord on Codes
Unity-Gain
thj.quartet

Okay, here's the details for the jazz concert: http://jamming.kakeruichi.mydns.jp/

Unity-Gain and Tanigon? Count me in! I'm also interested in meeting up for dinner, and I'm not really on a budget.

I'll be arriving in Japan on the afternoon of the 5th and leaving on the 10th. I'm going to hit a lot of the touristy places like Tokyo Tower and the shopping districts, but also hope to check out some of the scenic areas like Mt. Mitake, and if it's not too ambitious, Hitachi Seaside Park. I'd also like to hit up some of the notable arcades like Club Sega and Taito Station, and hopefully belt it out at a karaoke joint... Speaking of which, anyone know of a place that might have Sound Holic in the selection?

I don't have a solid itinerary set, so if anyone wants to meet up for sightseeing, shopping, etc., let me know and we'll set some plans!
Title: Re: Reitaisai 13 - 8th May 2016
Post by: N-Forza on April 28, 2016, 02:44:58 AM
Pretty sure it's a bar-type set-up, so there probably won't be a proper stage or anything really. It shouldn't run too terribly late, but if you wanted to get up at the crack of dawn the next day, then it might not be the best idea to stay until it ends, especially if it takes a while to get back to your lodging.

Also, I don't think it'd be a good idea to do dinner on that night either, due to the lateness of everything. We should still be doing something dinner-wise on the 6th though.

(Sorry for disturbing!)

Hello guys. I am new here. I kind of came to find this topic. :)
I am currently doing my internship in Osaka, but since it is a chance in a lifetime, I am going to Tokyo on the 6th of may until sunday evening, mainly to attend the RTS.
I quickly went through all the messages posted so far. It sounds like that is something you ought to be very well-prepared for. That is going to be my first RTS, and I admit that it is a bit disconcerting for me. I really wanted to find some folks to go there, since my Japanese level is still terrible, but now, it looks like I have got another reason for it. :V
If there is a dinner on the 6th, I shall join you for sure ! I am currently feeling like a little kouhai who needs assistance. :3

Reservations for 5 people at dinner tomorrow have been made for 8:00 PM at a nice place called Minato in Shibuya. We'll meet up in front of the Tsutaya/Starbucks beforehand, starting around 7:20, or whenever I can get off of work. It's 4,000 yen a head (8-course meal with all-you-can-drink plan), so have that much prepared, please.

Please either PM me or contact me on Twitter or Line (nforza26) if anything pops up.

The jazz concert reservations have also been made, but we'll plan for that tomorrow night.

Annnd Reitaisai 13 is over! I couldn't have asked for a better first experience of Reitaisai. The greatest debt is probably owed to Forza, who took the burden of babysitting us throughout these few days. I cannot thank you enough for the hospitality for the past few days, even weeks before we got to Japan. If you ever find yourself headed to Singapore, do not hesitate to contact me and I hope to extend the same hospitality to you. (No rts here though boooo)

The past 3 days have been unbelievable. It has truly been a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life. Forza was an amazing host, and was very patient and helpful every step of the way, even though he had a lot going on. I honestly can't thank him enough for putting up with a clueless foreigner like myself. I'm sorry I didn't properly introduce myself to either Vyrien or Hungrybookworm, but for what its worth, I enjoyed your company all the same.

Touhou is awesome by and large due to the community, and that is exactly what I've come to think of those who I've shared this journey with.

Anyway, thank you for having been awesome ! :D

As expected with Forza you're in good hands. Sounds like you had fun.

I couldn't be part of the dinner because I had already dinner appointment with other people.

On the day of Reitaisai. it was fun to see Vento, Vyrien and Centurian. (All I can remember for now who visited our booth). I tried visiting other booths but time is really annoying limited. Still think Reitaisai should last until 16:30 instead of 15:30. While an hour may sound much of a difference, it actually quite is. Oh well, can't be helped.

Well, I think they would've allowed the selling part of the event to run a bit longer if they didn't have the other stuff lined up, but even Comiket only runs until 4 so exceptions are uncommon.

Glad everyone had fun at the various events, although give me too much credit. I simply wanted expose others to some of the more obscure things going on as a show of support. It's true the jazz concert might have sold out even if they didn't have 4-5 gaijin in the seats, but just the fact you were there probably meant something to the performers. It was the same reason why I shared my circle list. Ideally, you'd check most everything out ahead of time, but that can be really hard to do with no experience and even a modest grasp of Japanese. One of the cool things about doujin events is making discoveries on the spot, but if it's your first time, you'll be so overwhelmed that you might pass by with it right under your nose. And I have first-hand experience of how exhausting they can be even if you know what you're doing, lol.

Sorry I wasn't really around much. My stomach got pretty bad during the latter half of the trip so I couldn't really be sociable and whatnot. It was fun seeing everyone though! Well, almost everyone, I think lol.
