I don't understand the hype with Splatoon, i get the premise and i know it's a good game, but i think it's overhyped, i think it's just another shooter, what is so special about Splatoon that other games can't captivate other than it's colourful and vibrant colours are a breath of fresh air for the shooter genre and it's stratigic approach, but aside from that, what does Splatoon offer that other games can't in terms of the shooter genre, ( btw i hate cod )Here's the thing: You could go 100-0 (kills vs deaths) in a game of splatoon and lose. Because the game isn't won or lost based on your ability to snipe other people. It helps, sure; but the game is won or lost on territorial control. There's a lot more to it than just "get good at shooting your opponent". The movement mechanics - swapping in and out of a faster 'stealthed' state and your offensive state - also adds a lot of difference.
Could someone clarify what else Splatoon does that other games don't?

That's like every half decent FPS ever.Quantitatively measured territorial control, specifically. Obviously there's some overlap - I've been on both ends of complete blowouts, and once one team inks the arena close to the spawn point it's surprisingly hard to get out and turn things around - just that how the win condition works for Turf Wars is different, is what he meant. Splat Zones is much more similar to a traditional king-of-the-hill format though.
It's not a typical FPS at all, is my point. You're right, because it's actually a TPS
Could someone clarify what else Splatoon does that other games don't?It's a game from Nintendo that's actually a new IP and not the same Mario / Zelda / Pokemon spinoffs, has mechanics that differentiate it from other shooter titles, and is a fresh coat of ink compared to every other grey-brown drab shooting game on the market. It's an all-ages shooter that can still command the same skill levels as any M-rated one.

I imagine that's part of how they're trying to keep things balanced and offer a variety of options so not everyone is using the exact same high-level weapons. There's enough variety of specials and subs that even with customization there won't be much overlap between what the players at the high end are using. It'll still keep the game feeling fresh.
I think you should sell all your amiibos for maximum profit, and then donate all proceeds to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.UGH!

My husband just picked this up and has enjoyed it though I've yet to give it a shot. I know there's local 2 player in some capacity, but is it possible that we can both play multiplayer with other people online like Mario Kart 8?No, and given how integral the gamepad is to playing the game, it'll probably never come. Additionally, the WiiU is not the most powerful console (local multiplayer MK8 drops to 30 fps) so there's a chance that it wouldn't be able to keep up with such a vibrant and speedy game in local multi.
I think I saw an option to just disable it, I'll try that next time I play.
Edit: Got my console set up and spent half an hour fucking around in single player Splatoon. My console skills are so rusty, and on top of that the controller is completely foreign to me. The motion-sensing camera movements are such a mess, I can't even look at things. I assume I'll get used to it, but right now I can't imagine I'd be much use in a match. I think I saw an option to just disable it, I'll try that next time I play.Splatoon's motion controls definitely take some getting used to, even when you have more experience with the Gamepad. However, after having spent time with both control schemes, I've found motion controls to be better for me in pretty much every way. To put it briefly, they're much faster and more precise than the sticks ever can be. If you ever decide to sit down and learn them, definitely take advantage of Hero Mode. Go through all the levels without ever touching the R-stick - practice using the Y button to center the camera instead.
So what's the technique for fighting against people using rollers? It seems like every team I play against has at least two of them on it, sometimes three. As far as I can tell they're basically melee weapons that let you trample people, right? And they seem to have a weak ranged function? When I find myself one-on-one with one I usually just lose, the only way I've been able to consistently beat them is with two people, one to draw fire and one to pick them off. They don't seem unmanageable, but I figure I better get them figured out because they seem to be so common. Maybe it's just a better of learning to keep track of them map better so they don't get the drop on me in tight spaces. At any rate, having fun so far. I'm up to a dozen matches or so and I'm learning a little. Lot of fun, at any rate.
Edit: Wait, is the secret "run backward while shooting"? I just tried that and it seemed to work pretty well. I guess it's just a matter of not getting engaged with them in places where you can't retreat and not getting surprised?

I'm up to a dozen matches or so and I'm learning a little. Lot of fun, at any rate. That is part of how to deal with rollers, anyway. If the roller knows what he/she's doing then they'll always be trying to kill you with their fling attack, never by straight-up rolling. Their fling has slightly longer range than the Jr. and Aerospray, but even those weapons have ways to pick off rollers (mostly from good movement and certain specials). What you want to do is try to shoot them from as close to the maximum range of your weapon as possible. It's a lot like spacing in fighting games, really. And to take it a step further, get the jump on them instead of the other way around. Sneak attacks are like a golden rule of shooters in general, and Splatoon's inking mechanics allow for some very creative ways to ambush people. Keeping track of enemy rollers so you don't get ambushed yourself does takes some map awareness, but finding the time to safely look away from the TV and at the Gamepad can sometimes be easier said than done. That said, catching enemy movements on the Gamepad can be very rewarding, so it's definitely worth it to practice that.

Here are the official patch notes in English (http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14946).Ink Res nerf may or may not change the entire game meta.
When do I use Echolocator for maximum effect? Do I just pop it the second it comes online, or is there a particular scenario I should save it for?I think the most important thing is that you use it when everyone on the enemy team is alive, since they can't be tagged when waiting to respawn. Using it to refill your ink can be helpful in a firefight, but I'd argue you shouldn't be actively trying to put yourself in that situation, since you'd want to know where enemies are before they get to wherever you're trying to defend.
Is there an optimal balance between weapon efficiency and ink recovery for different kinds of weapons? Where should I be using which one? I'm guessing recovery is probably better for weapons that are already efficient, but I haven't really tested it or done the math.I'd say Ink Recovery Up is more useful for the SMG-type weapons (N-Zap, Jr., Aerospray, etc.), especially those with grenades, as those are what drain your ink the fastest anyway. However, it's probably also best reserved for sub slots since there are better options for your main slots. The only weapons where I've seen Ink Saver (Main) argued as necessary in a main slot are the Splattershot Pro and certain rollers.
I'm still worthless Inkling and need to get lvl 4 first.
Here's a Tower Control match from the Japanese version of the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrQlF1JnS94).
Currently at level 7 and made some cash though I don't want to spend it yet. Tbh the splatter Jr and grenades with bubble special so far didn't give me any trouble at all except the Ink reservoir.I'm level 20 and still main the Jr for turf war and have no intention of changing anymore after being generally unsatisfied with any other weapon choice in TW
I'm level 20 and still main the Jr for turf war and have no intention of changing anymore after being generally unsatisfied with any other weapon choice in TWThe loadout for the Splatter Jr is quite strong as far as I have seen. The only downside is power. Splatting an enemy takes some time with it. Any person with a roller, sniper will 1 shot you. But overall it has best usage. Especially the Bubble special. If you use that tactical you can easily win CQC vs 1 or 2 careless Inklings (if your aim is good and they don't try to run). But that is why you have a grenade :V
Okay, new questions. With the 1.3.0 patch, you can also shoot at Krakens to knock them back like you would a Bubbler. If you use a short-range weapon, just be wary of the roller trying to fling at you as soon as the Kraken ends (I know from experience lol). You want to come out the winner of this kind of exchange, not the victim of a trade or worse. Something I want to try out is timing a grenade to catch them once the Kraken wears off.
How do I play against krakens? Running away obviously, but I kept getting wrecked by them on Kelp Dome where there are limited routes of escape in a lot of the hallways. Can they be killed? It didn't seem like it, but maybe I did it bad.
What's the point of the paintbrush? It looks to me like a much narrower (maybe slightly faster?) roller with a bigger arc for the ranged mode. Is that all there is to it or am I missing something? What kinds of situations is it good for?
Is there any kind of mechanic to compensate for 3v4s? Maybe this is nothing, but I noticed last night that uneven games seemed a lot closer every time the fourth player didn't spawn than when they spawn but don't leave the starting area. Not close enough for the outnumbered players to win, but both times that happened they just lost by a little.
Imo too few people using mid-fight jumps to assist / tactical swap. Somehow people only use jump when they died. Which is bit sad. Not sure how this is with Ranked wars, still trying to get to 10.I've found Squid Jumping is really not as effective as people first made it out to be. The main reason, as I've heard it described recently, is that by the time you get there, the information you saw on the Gamepad, i.e., where your teammates are, and more importantly where your enemies are, is roughly five seconds old (even more now with the nerfed Stealth Jump). A lot can change in five seconds - your teammates could die, or enemies with long-range options (not just weapons, but also subs and specials) can set up to pick you off from a distance. It also reveals the rough position of whoever is being jumped to - even with Stealth Jump, you can't turn off the audio cues - meaning it's bad for your team's overall stealth too.

It is not like I perma squid jump left to right but there are certainly moments where I notice an ally making a paint move to regain a large turf and squid jumping in to assist will put quick pressure on that area. Of course the location you're leaving has to be "secure" and not get covered when you left. And also as I mentioned as well, many times those ninja enemies start painting your base and nobody notices it. You have no choice but to squidjump back unless you want to lose badly (unless you are absolutely sure you can paint their base as counter attack). It isn't just for sticky situations / fuk I am in trouble. I've won a few matches with marginal difference thanks to this but yea: Extremely situational.
There are times when you can tell a Squid Jump will be relatively safe, such as when a buddy is in an area that is only easily accessible by your team, but even then you can't always guarantee that'll be the case. Personal anecdote, I was playing a round of Turf Wars on Port Mackerel with some friends last week. The enemy team had the clearing on their side of the map secure, but I had managed to sneak on top of the nearby forklift overlooking that area. Without my Bubbler charged, naturally I wasn't going to just rush in. However, then I noticed someone Squid Jumping to an enemy along the right-side wall. I timed a grenade throw for when the dude would land - boom, easy double-kill. It's even worse in Splat Zones, because both teams will be fighting over well-defined areas, and you do not want to feed the other team an easy kill and give them a choke-hold over the zones - that's how matches end quickly.
If you're about to lose and your team is making one last push but you're back by the spawn, then you should Squid Jump if only because you have no other choice - make them have to deal with your entire team at once if they want to close it out, even if it's a clear desperation play. Jumping back to your spawn is also not a bad idea if you find yourself in a sticky situation, since it's much faster than dying. There's also using it to get out of your spawn area if you're being spawn-camped, but if that's happening then there's a much bigger problem going on to begin with.
What's the timeframe on the Splatfest exactly tomorrow? I've got a prior engagement from around 10am-2pm EST, will there be anything for me to do before that?It runs for 24 hours, starting at 3 A.M. ET on July 4. If those four hours are the only ones you'll be busy for, you'll still have plenty of time left over.
Is that how it works, you get double if your side wins overall? And sea snails are used for equipment rerolls, right?Yes and yes. However, even if you're on the losing team, you'll get a few extra snails if you get a rank of Champion or King/Queen, though I have no idea how many more (still less than the winning team, most likely).
I'm on team cats as well. Feel free to team with me if you see me online, I plan to pop on and off all day starting in the afternoon.
So can you put a splash wall down on the tower? The one from Tower Control? Yes you can. It's tricky though, since you can't alter the way the Splash Wall is launched like you can with regular grenades. It has a habit of bouncing off the center pillar if you try to use it while on the tower itself, so try to get it up from beside it. Also, a very good strategy to do when the other team has the tower is to plant a Splash Wall right in front of it. They'll be forced to either get off or direct their attention to the wall.
Also about disconnects: I am using USB to Ethernet so disconnects are more rare for me I think.I am too, but it's still happening. I've seen others disconnect quite a bit throughout the day too, with mixed results. I actually won a couple games on the wrong side of a 3v4, but in between those I lost hard on the wrong side of a 2v3. It's definitely more chaotic overall today.
Dogs beat Cats 160 - 140...just tells me that Splatfests are still pretty broken as an overall system, even after the changes from the 1.3.0 patch. Aside from the snails, which are a purely individual reward, what's even the point of competing for a team if one team is destined to pretty much automatically lose before they even begin?
which means ... they won on popularity alone!
Snails reroll secondary slots for equipment with 3 slots or add slots to equipments with fewer (1 or 2 *). You can't reroll main abilities cause that's what characterises the item other than appearance.
Well this is just the first splatfest result we've gotten. We can't automatically call it complete bunk just based on a sample size of "One", and then there's the fact that if we remove splatfest entirely, there's going to be a need for a replacement event. that said, I know adding popularity vote to the score makes the results more interesting, but it also makes it seem more unfair. Cat's needed to win 60% of games in order to overcome the initial popularity barrier. That is the right way to approach it, yes. Technically we have 3 sets of results under the current ruleset (the EU Splatfest, which we just got the results for, and Japan's Red Fox Udon vs. Green Tanuki Soba event on the 3rd), though we'll most likely need another dozen or so over the rest of the calendar year to get a more confident picture of how all the numbers tend to play out. However, this post on Squidboards (http://squidboards.com/threads/cats-win-51-of-splat-fest-matches.3051/#post-52748) makes me believe that the win percentages are perhaps even more irrelevant to the results than what it might seem. Here's the gist of the post:
Statistics will tell us that winning percentage is not likely to deviate very much between two evenly numbered teams in a very large scale. However, popularity of said teams can skew heavily to one side, as shown in this splatfest.
Well, Rock vs Pop is not a surprise. We won in both popularity and matches.
64% popularity and
53% performance,
170 - 130 final points.
I got 24 snails
Edit
People speculate that the reason Dogs won barely vs Cats in performance is due to the same thing all SplatFesters suffer: Lack of people for match making. Majority of my games were Rock vs Rock. But I am on the "Rock" team and my enemy is shown as "Pop" yet they all carry the "<title> Rock boy/girl". So if we get asskicked by our own Rock fellas, we lose performance points. That is why the score is close than it should be.
Also face it, Nintendo made a strong move with Splatoon. But I am extremely salty and kind of mad they released it for the Nintendo WiiU. If this game were to be on PC, the reach would've been 1000x greater I think. Not to mention pretty much more people own a PC than a WiiU. The greedy WiiU price however is also a strong move. We all know what many people are going to get for Christmas this year.
Yeah, I was thinking about it and that came up. The fact is players of all skill levels are joining from level 3 peeps who can't even wear new clothes to level 20s who poured all of their money into rerolling. the skill level of all players combined is going to even the more you play against each other, so in the end it would be really surprising if the different ever goes above 55-45.
And yes, every loss is equal to losing performance points, but I'm pretty certain the results of the splatfest only count the win/loss ratio, not Player's performance.
Edit: In other words, I'm pretty sure the Matches against the same team do not count as a win or loss, as oppose to just automatically deducting 6 points from the more popular side. I'm pretty sure cat's would have flat out beaten dogs if that were the case.

@ the performance stuff: It is a speculation, not a confirmed thing. Though I think the speculation might be plausible because it is the only way I can relate the high popularity difference and lower/closer winrates.
But there is no relation between High popularity and Winrates in the first place. having more people does not directly imply that the people involved are more likely to win 4vs4 matches. If losing 6 points every Dog v Dog or Rock v Rock loss had brought the rates back down to 50% then against who were the Dogs and rockers getting those extra points from?
I'm glad I was able to pick up those Amiibo, since one of them let me unlock the Hero Roller Replica that includes sticky bombs and the Killer Wail, both incredible for Tower Control. I've gotten at least two triple kills with the latter when I ran the L-3 Nozzlenose, and then realized how useful the former was when I fought against them.
It's amiibo only. Each of the three amiibos (girl, boy, and squid) give you different outfits and weapons; along with challenges to unlock said items. For me, the UK batch got stolen, and with lack of funds, I haven't been able to acquire any of them~ >>
Frustrating, but one day, I'll get them~
Right! With the Splatfest out of the way with, two new weapons are on the way for tomorrow! This time, we have the Sploosh-o-Matic, and the .96 Gal Deco. (https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/618316628162445312) The Sploosh looks interesting, and I can't wait to have a poke at it~ XD
Oh, and Pasu, was great playing with you earlier; we seriously rock on the same team! Also, nice combination~ XD (https://twitter.com/Tamashii_Kanjou/status/618356651674980352)
I like both kinds of rides, even though roller coasters still took a little getting used to. However, I have some particularly fond memories of water slides and log flume rides from theme parks as a kid, especially given the hot summer days we tended to go to those places.
Why can't there be peace between the Inklings and Octolings?
Why can't there be peace between the Inklings and Octolings? With land being scarce, of course there will be conflict over resources.
Roller coasters, a million times over. I hate having wet pants. How do people even go on water rides in 2015 when everyone has a phone in their pocket?
Was exactly what I was discussing with few people as well.
Still how would you even pick? Both are pretty nessecery, so you can't use logic of "which one can I do without".
You could not glue the phone to your butt and have fun in the real world.
Water slides implies you're wearing swimsuits anyways.
Also I tested the new maps, and Chargers are ... I can't use them. I can't use them at all.
It doesn't appear to push them back but just stop their momentum. You also need to be using quite a higher fire rate weapon, shooting with like a 52 won't fling them 100m back. Something like an aerospray will basically shut them down though. Also works better when they jump because you can't gain speed in the air.Oh so the nerf works great for everyone except Chargers, Rollers, Blasters, and half of the shooters. Fantastic :V
I'm sorry for asking the following dumb / stupid questions but we need to get an overview:
- Was it lagging on Wifi before?
- How is your network setup in the house/room (are you behind a switch etc, routers, number of devices)
Also go through the following:
- Get on LAN with a laptop/pc (utp cable) Output a ping to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS server) and your router. What is the latency?
- Get on WiFi with a laptop/pc and output same ping. Latency?
- Use the USB Ethernet Adapter you purchased for your laptop/pc and ping. Latency?
- Use the USB Ethernet Adapter for your laptop/pc, download a large file and ping. Monitor your latency / disconnects etc
- ISP speeds? (up/down)
Especially when using the USB Adapter and testing > packet losses (time outs) or high latency ms can explain your issues.
Without the adapter, if you don't have the packet loss, time outs or latency then your adapter might be faulty / unstable.
Also curious, which one did you buy?
Edit:
And yeah, I wish I could use chargers. I wish there were single-player turf wars options so I could test weird weapons without tanking whatever team I end up on, but I guess that wouldn't be that useful.
You could go into recon mode :V Where it's just you and no one else in the map
What really counts and makes a huge difference is Jump/respawn timer reduction, Special gauge increase, special duration and Special gauge reduction when splatted. Damage and defence are unknown. But I did myself few basic tests and noticed initial damage increase on Splattershot Pro for example. With 2x main and 2x sub I did 99,9 dmg in 3 shots on regular target. Meaning probably with 2x main and 3x sub the Splattershot Pro will 3 shot Inklings but will waste 2 main slots.Damage up is specifically designed so that no matter how much you stack, shots to kill won't decrease. One main defence up neutralises all damage ups.
Speaking of trying weapons, has anyone played the two-player game?
Damage up is specifically designed so that no matter how much you stack, shots to kill won't decrease. One main defence up neutralises all damage ups.So if I would get another sub dmg up, it would lesser my shot by 1 but any random 1 defence sub will immediately nullify that effect and thus make my damage up useless? Argh. I wonder then whether Damage up is viable for splash damage of Blasters. That is kind of the only reason I am considering.

The game just put me on a team with three chargers (I was using an Aerospray, on Arowana Mall). Out of curiosity, what should I have been doing in that situation, aside from praying? I kind of split my time between inking in our own base because nobody else could do it and trying to push with charger support. It did not work at all, we lost horribly, but how much of that was my fault? Should I have trusted them to handle one job or the other and focused my attention more?
Still can't play against krakens. I don't know what to do, kraken seems to be a "kill entire opposing team and gain control of entire map" button. I've tried running and hiding, and they usually only pop it when I'm already within reach so it's too late. I've tried shooting them and have never once saved myself doing that. Anybody got any other ideas?
Edit: Ha ha wow, it just happened again, AND we got a disconnect. :V
Usually I'd be glad to have charger team mates on Arowana Mall, because once chargers get ahold of the chokepoints, your win is pretty secured. Well, that also depends on whether your chargers are good chargers too I guess? You might have been just plain unlucky.
Krakens swim at the same speed or slower than your own swim speed as a squid, so even if they're just a little distance away from you, if you start running (by swimming) they won't be able to catch up unless they corner you. Usually when I meet an enemy Kraken I just switch to squid form and swim backwards as far as I can. If you're still having trouble with krakens, I'd recommend you to try the kraken out for yourself, then you can see how and where they fall short as a special.
Time to do my best again for Splatfest because I really need that gear reroll snails to pimp up my gear for performance in Ranked.
How do rerolls work? I tried it the other day and it seemed like you have to reroll the whole item every time, making getting what you want effectively impossible. Was I doing that wrong, or is it just that hard?
Each brand has an associated higher chance to get a certain sub ability (30%), and a lower chance to get another sub (3%).
Which is why everyone uses the Jungle Hat.
So does that mean the people I see in the lobby with three matching slots on each item are just flaunting the fact that they're cheaters, or is that something else?
I'm committed to the tinted shades, which do not seem good. Last Ditch Effort is just kind of lame. It does win me matches occasionally, but probably not any more than any other hat ability.
Is that why everyone uses it?
I though it was because it was the Freshest hat in the entire game.
(which it is)
Can you actually cheat in the game? I really liked the tinted shades too, just spent two shells on it for the slots. Mostly because when I first started out playing Splatoon I used it until I got the gas mask.
I thought people used it mainly for its Main Ability, but I don't find it fresh at all :V so I've held off getting one of my own even until now-
Keep in mind that Statistical improbability does not equal to impossible. I did eventually roll a pair of Moto Boots (Ink Resistance) to have three "Run Speed Up"s. Of course it took a majority of my sea snails and my entire bank roll at the time to do so. These boots are really useful for my weapon selections, even if I would rather something that looks like hiking boots.
What a great start to splatfest, 5 (I've lost count, really) losses in a streak. Haven't even won once yet. why do people spend time grouping at the lower part of saltspray rig a colossal waste of time /wringes head in hands

Guuuuuh I hate Moray Towers. It's so team-composition dependent and my most hated game mechanic, the kraken, is stronger there than maybe anywhere else. I don't think it's a well-designed map, at least not for turf wars.
Too scared to try the Octobrush right now because of that map. I don't know how to use it, and I certainly don't know how to use it there. I did see a guy doing a kind of cool tactic with it where if his team was already winning and had pushed far up the opposing tower he would put down a beakon, then stealth next to it and ambush anyone who tried to put it out. Probably worked better against me than a lot of people because I don't have conventional bombs, but it took me by surprise and seemed cool.
Why do you say the Kraken's op there? I think the map's fine, mostly because of the shortcut you can take from the first level to the second by the side which I see not a lot of people using (I only found out a while ago myself)
Farmed in Ranked Battle from B- until B+ with the Scoped E-Litre
What i dont get to understand why i always needs more with with the Burst Bomb than any other (when the opponent has no Def Upgrade).
I think he's referring to the perceptional phenomena that enemies don't get splatted as quickly as it feels like you do via same strength hits.
Burst bombs for example: Normally it only takes two or three hits to die to them, but in some cases you can exhaust your full supply of ink and the enemy will survive.
Obviously this is usually due to missing some hits or lag. It's also perceptually different because when you're hit you only count the strikes that hit you, but when you attack you count every strike you throw.
Minigun pls. Pls pls plsYes yes yes yes. YES.
Motherfucking level 50 cap hell fucking yeah
Still no playable Octolings, that's the main thing I'm holding out for.
> Let us begin with A- 80
> Moray Towers (GFDI)
> Doesn't matter. I am an Inkling boy, we got this.
> Knocked out in 1 min.
> A- 70
> >:(
And then I did more suffering TL DR: Finally reached A 30.
At least you guys' Splatfests aren't corporately sponsored affairs.Look at this Asian person complaining.
At least you guys' Splatfests aren't corporately sponsored affairs.Says the man who got white ink first
I don't really like hot dogs or marshmallows that much. My inclination was to go with marshmallows because the entendres are going to be insufferable, but marshmallows are still open to breast jokes so urghhhh.
maybe this is NoA giving us our boy vs girl splatfest theme!Eromame will be very pleased if this happens.
Finally got around to playing ranked. Got to rank C without losing a single match, including a 3v4. I expect to plateau any moment now. :V My loadout isn't really set for this (including still using my sunglasses, which barely even work in Splat Zones) and I'm still using the Aerospray, which sort of works but is probably suboptimal. During my win streak I also finally capped my level. Why isn't Marie marshmallow considering that she has white "hair"???????????????????????????????
Ended up picking marshmallows for the splatfest, mostly because Callie is Team Marshmallow and she's better than Marie. :derp:
What's everyone's head equip for ranked? I'm not sold on continuing to use the hairclip from the school uniform so I'm looking to branch out.

in Ranked wars, splatting and controlling choke points becomes more important than Turf war where you can win with ninja invasion and painting their side. Two modes are just different.
While it is heavily based on opinions, I would avoid Last Effort or Opening Gambit. The one shot 30s doesn't make up for the actual duration of the match and you effectively occupy a slot which isn't in effect or is in effect for brief moment. Primary abilities give huge bonus so getting things like Faster Respawn, Ink saving etc. will benefit both you and your team for the entire matches. Some times, Tower Control or Splat Zone matches are major effort and can last the entire duration of the round instead of a fast knock-out. Abilities also should be combined with your weapon.
A roller would benefit way more from Ink saving and recovery speed because you get to fling more and spent less time in the Ink to recover. A shooter would benefit more from walk speed to allow strafing, etc etc.
Cold blooded because I hate being Echolocated. To be honest, for Splat Zones specially, Cold blooded should be used by all teammembers unless he/she is a charger.
The thing is, to win you don't want your allies down.
Where is my ika musume outfit???????????
Ooooooh that looks absolutely nice.
So what is Nintendo going to do more: Purchasable cosmetics for cash++
Gameplay buffs are neat and all, but let's hear about the new clothing! What do we get? I want a labcoat above all else, is there a labcoat? Other major wants are cartoon nerd glasses (with the spiral lenses), a ten-gallon hat, and different colors of button-ups.
Oh god, I just seen the American commercial for Splatoon for the first time. You're a kid
I cringed.
Multiple times.
Just why?
The Squid Girl outfit's available, but the pieces are thrown into the shuffle with the others, so you'll have to wait until they show up or order them from the urchin dude.I saw the Squid Girl outfit in screencaps last night, but I'm disappointed that it's not available as well on the first full day.
The Slosher is amazing at covering area but feels a bit weak in combat. I had more fun with the Splatling Gun but needing to charge it is a bit of a hassle.
I saw the Squid Girl outfit in screencaps last night, but I'm disappointed that it's not available as well on the first full day.I meant that it's available in the game, I even saw people with the dress or the hat in-game, but whether or not it will be available in store on the first day (or the next, or the day after) is dependent on how the stock is shuffled.

Beyond that, it's bizarre that Nintendo would not be using their first full day to only stock new materials in the shops.
When we making the MotK squad???
It is an uncontrollable firing gun. I was expecting the following mechanics for it to be honest:
- Splatling gun should NOT BE A CHARGER! WTF!?!? It should have been a traditional rapid fire, balance that shit out with slow movement, slow ink recharge and high ink usage. Like come the fuck on!
basically I'm back to the dynamo already.Solid choice. They wreck in every game mode.
Sent some friend requests out to some of y'all, let's splat! You can add me under the NNID PicochillaTH if you want.
Is it me or does everyone play like at different times? (Although I've bumped into Kanjou and Helepolis before) I tend to play GMT+8 midnight to around 4-5am, which is 9am (PT) onwards (You yurops have DST so I have no idea how to calculate that :derp: )GMT+2 here due to DST.
I just had a huuuge winstreak in ranked and very nearly ranked up to B. I can't get a back-and-forth going, it's only all wins or all losses. I don't understand it.
Also discovered a new thing I have trouble with. I can not EVER beat Sloshers when they have a height advantage. In Tower Control once they're on a tower they might as well be rapid-fire chargers with wider firing arcs, getting close to them to knock them off is just way too hard. I can't figure it out. I think I need sticky bombs and I do not have them. Maybe it's just a matter of praying my Inkzooka is up.
Splatfest motherfuckersBe quiet you inferior GMT minus being. The GMT and GMT+ folks are still chillin'

Well now you're all yurops and I'm like in the NA minority ;_;GMT+10 is fun.
You can Pre-Select main abilitys? How?Eh? No you misunderstood :V
Eh? No you misunderstood :V
Previous SplatFest I forgot to equip my Cold Blooded shirt (https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,18498.msg1199504.html#msg1199504). Because during SplatFest you cannot change your shirt once it kicks off :X

But first, my Niece's birthday party :toot:

But they force the splatfest tee on you don't they? Unless you managed to roll cold blooded on to it then welp nice jobPasu is right, you are required to use the Splatfest shirt for Splatfest. Hope you leveled it up ahead of time, otherwise RIP
Well popularity only gets a 2x bonus now while wins get a 4x bonus so its more balanced yeahI stopped playing after my awesome team got forcefully errored. Though the games were 30-60s wait at max. Though in EU now all kids are gone to bed so I stopped playing too.
Edit: how long are the waits for you guys? It doesn't take long for my team to form but matching up with another team takes 1-2 minutes here
I juat keep getting Marshmallow Vs. Marshmallow matches over and over. It sucks.Related story, I managed to catch a couple matches on a stream earlier, and both of them were Marsh vs. Marsh. Then I caught another match close to dinner, and that was also Marsh vs. Marsh. It's been apparent the whole day that Hot Dogs are less popular, but by how much remains to be seen. Wouldn't it be ironic if this Splatfest, the first after increasing the win multiplier specifically so popularity isn't as influential, ended up having the most lopsided popularity vote in Splatfest history? :V
Also, FUCK Moray Towers. Worst map in game, please stop putting me on it 2/3 matches.
what was everyone's weapons? I used the Slosher because the maps was just asking for it, followed by the carbon roller and then the Sploosh-a-matic for the last stretch. I don't use the Sploosh normally in normal turf wars but man beacon + killer wail is a pretty great support combo.Jr. as always, though I did use the Tentatek for a bit until I got more comfortable with Camp Triggerfish and Moray Towers. Yeah, I did see a lot of Sloshers today. They're surprisingly effective

Yeah, Moray Towers is definitely not an easy map. I had trouble with it earlier today as well, but a lot of that was unfamiliarity on my part. After playing on it for a while today and learning more of the layout, I did eventually notice some improvement. Keeping track of enemies above you is pretty killer though.

and you'll be surprised how many players target the sprinklers instead of, you know, the squid that actually threw it~ :VI shoot at the sprinkler whenever I pass one since 9 times of 10 the thrower just "set it and forget it" and they go away with only a few shots. Squids that do pop up means FIREFIGHT!!!!!!!
NA Splatfest results are in.I will accept this moral victory on behalf of team Hot Dog because holy shit when I was playing we were getting absolutely decimated by Marshmallow once people started to wake up on the east coast.
Marshmallows: 64% popularity, 48% wins
Hot Dogs: 36% popularity, 52% wins
Final score: Marshmallows 256, Hot Dogs 244
Welp, I wasn't too far off with the popularity being so lopsided. >.<
Went and picked up the Wii U today. And wow, Helepolis was right, Splatoon is fun. Motion controls took a bit of time to get used to, but I sure am surprised with its accuracy. Also Splattershot Jr is amazing.Welcome to the Turf wars kid. Now on your way to become fresh and a squid.

I cheered so loudly! Kamiko (name of my Inkling) is now 3-0 with the Splatfests; and finally, a certain other sister gets the love she deserves~ XDI am surprised husband and wife can get along like that. :V :V :V :V
Also, Puppy is mad that she is now 1-2; the one time she was on the winning side was when, you guessed it, she picked the same as me. That was fun~ <3
Puppy shouldn't be complaining, I'm 0 for 3. :V
On a side note, I'm starting to consider skipping future Splatfests. The main reason I've kept playing them was because I wanted snails to reroll my gear, but after this last one I've now gotten some rolls I can live with, so I have no more use for my remaining snails. Although it's improved since the beginning, Splatfests still strike me as just an inferior Turf War format. It's very telling when the Japanese players you face in solo queues tend to have more stable connections than the people in your own region.
Well I'd say to play a bit just to get a handful of snails each time (like maybe until defender or champion at least?) so when there's even more new gear you can add more slots/rerolls but also just for the excitement of choosing a side and playing for itThat first part is what I've been doing this whole time, like I said in my last post. I'm not familiar with all the new gear from this update, but I also don't see much reason for me to change what I've got now, unless a brand new ability is introduced down the line or something. I also don't care about leveling up gear that I never plan on using anyway, though I'll still buy them if only to complete my collection.
Edit: Also, how does ranked scoring work? I've been consistently doing three wins to two losses all afternoon and I'm not making any progress because even then I'm losing as many points as I'm winning. What's the system for determining that?At low rank you gain lots of points for a win but beyond B- I believe it is by default
At low rank you gain lots of points for a win but beyond B- I believe it is by default
- Winning is +10
- Losing is -10
But if there are more higher ranked people in your team compared to the enemy. Example: your team has A A B- B- and enemy has B- B B+ B then:
- Winning is ~8p
- Losing is up to 14p possible.
If the enemy has more high ranks together, then it is the other way around where losing will deduct less and winning will grant you more.
I kind of want to learn the Ranged Blaster for Tower Control and I don't think this is the place/time to do it. Maybe next time I get booted back down to the even-more-minors I'll give it a go.
I always pick weapons in ranked that I'm good enough with to sort of carry at least one team mate...
Might think about streaming some squid action either tonight or tomorrow. Not sure yet, but if anyone is interested in invading it, let me know~
Joining Kanjou as we speak V: prepared to get Ink'd.
Edit: End of stream :V
Rank A+ da ze
Holy shit I am only getting queued with S and S+. :flamingv:
And i just got into A- recently.... those battles are annoying toughI have been stuck in A- for quite long time. Cannot explain the battles. It isn't because people are clueless but just game is hard. Dropped 2x into B+ and had to struggle very hard getting back. I did attempt few Splat Zones too which helped me gain points.
NOTICE ME PASU SENPAI
B-but your level's higherYeah but I was playing like hot garbage today so I defer that title to you
My NNID is InfernalExuro if anyone ever feels like playing or watching me get DUB-stomped into oblivion. :toot:

post
Remember when forza said we were lucky our splatfests werent corporate affairs (https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/633654655004880896)
Which setting are you talking about exactly? I changed a lot of router settings, maybe I did that one.https://www.reddit.com/r/splatoon/comments/38pnqg/psa_for_those_with_connection_errors_possible/
Oh yeah, what's the highest kill count everyone's got in ranked?16/2 in an weird extraordinary one-time game where all my enemies and allies were S / S+. As fresh A+, I was top of both teams. Map was Kelp Dome (one of my favourite)
This also forces people to get good at the game in all modes.Nah, you just don't play on modes/maps you don't like.
My own average kills on ranked are also around the 20 range...
Your average is 20? Christ, what's your high score? And how many deaths do you average?
Okay, fair enough. I've already got a rank-based inferiority complex, don't scare me like that...
B-but you did reach rank B so that counts for something right?
Yeah, but I periodically second guess whether I should be here or not. I more or less consistently rank in the bottom half of my team, often the bottom. I guess Aerospray is a support class so I shouldn't expect tons of kills, but I still feel like I die way too much.
Alright then, make up your own splatfest themes.I have been, but even as a total joke it's not that hard. They could start with, oh I don't know, Callie vs Marie!
Woah, thought for sure the 1st weapon on your list would be the blaster; do you use the ordinary blaster or the ranged blaster?Custom Blaster.
I just looked on myself about my weapon usage ranking...Wanna do some Turf Wars? (Because Splatzones is up on 1 terrible map: Bluefin Depot. Yuck.

Welp.... looks like the hype about the Inkbrush was pretty much on overusing.
Wanna do some Turf Wars? (Because Splatzones is up on 1 terrible map: Bluefin Depot. Yuck.
Splatfest huh. Guess some moment again to collect 24 snails. I am going probably for Singing during this splat fest. I like Aori's voice more than Hotaru. Of course she is more mature looking. I guess she would be fitting the dancing.
Let us destroy the place, Kanjou.
I have been, but even as a total joke it's not that hard. They could start with, oh I don't know, Callie vs Marie!
but found myself unexpectedly out of ammo and getting killed before I could do anything. Ouch.Once was playing Port Mackerel, inking like crazy on the enemy side. Got right up behind someone, shot once and then finally ran out of ammo, was dead very quickly. Felt really dumb for the rest of the match
How did you know I was going to pick singing as well? I mean, I like both... but let's face it, when you write lyrics and went through eduction singing and practising... yeah, singing is love~ <3I can look into your soul!
What is the motive btw for picking the Rapid Blaster? What is your intended play style or use with it?
(You really like that vantage point on the grilles in the skatepark)Hehe, so you noticed. :V
Special Saver:
no abilities = you lose 50% of the amount of special gauge you had before you died.
1x as main ability = you lose 37,5%
2x as main ability = you lose 25%
3x as main ability = you lose 12.5%
1x as sub ability = you lose 43.75%
2x as sub ability = you lose 37.5%
3x as sub ability = you lose 31.25%
Conclusion: Each main special saver recovers +12.5% of your special gauge while sub special saver recovers +6.25%. No diminishing returns.

Honestly, I'm a sitting duck there for Chargers or smart people, but in Turf Wars people rarely pay attention to that specific spot and you can paint + harass pretty hard. Having a bubbler of course helps do. And if you're getting attacked, plenty of space to retreat or even hold them off.
I even saw you using it one game and 2 of my allies were wasting their times on you. We even lost that match. Well played. :smokedcheese:
A long last, I am a Squid Kid. :V Add my NNID LemGambino and watch me flail about trying to ink things. giff money plz
Speaking of which, what weapon/special combo would be a good fit for a beginner like me?
I'm curious, which grill area are you guys talking about? Some grills I try and camp but the moment someone spots me I'm pretty dead since I'm a sitting duck when I try to squid through itThis one. The one facing the spawn point. (http://ec12.cdn.cincopa.com/Screenshot%2822%29.png?o=4&res=20&cdn=ec&p=y&pid=571448&ph3=xvo4cfvzfpospcxcj4s2ix2ypj1be0w2&d=AsDA7AAazmAAViJyAQv6gpF&as=mp3)
Japanese sources are often easier to find and hopefully more reliable. Sometimes I really question our Western fanbases, sighFunny that you mention that, seeing as how the JP source used data from western players. :V And yes, it seems to say that gauge reduction is calculated as 0.
Funny that you mention that, seeing as how the JP source used data from western players. :V And yes, it seems to say that gauge reduction is calculated as 0.Then they are better at organising, analysing and centralized display because holy hell try to find some sensible and nicely displayed info is annoying. Not to mention there are like 3 Splatoon wikis and with terrible in-depth info. (Or I suck at finding them)
This one. The one facing the spawn point. (http://ec12.cdn.cincopa.com/Screenshot%2822%29.png?o=4&res=20&cdn=ec&p=y&pid=571448&ph3=xvo4cfvzfpospcxcj4s2ix2ypj1be0w2&d=AsDA7AAazmAAViJyAQv6gpF&as=mp3)
Strange, everytime I camp there I'm sure to be spotted by any spawning squid, although maybe its because I'm painting /moving around so I was highly likely to be not ignored :ohdear:I always check there, half the time I see shots from there it's a sprinkler though
I also recommend Last Ditch Effort for Ranked if you want to try something different. Lasts the entirety of overtime.2ch wiki says that it doesn't last during overtime. Only the effective last 30 seconds of the match.
Yeah; time zones are an annoying little thing in terms of organisation.I waited until 6:30am for you ;_;
edit: Ahahahah, Decepticons won Booyah~! http://imgur.com/fkCj9ix
On an unrelated note, does anyone know why Turf War isn't a ranked mode? It's kind of the thing the whole game hinges on, so it seems weird that it isn't at least in the rotation as one possible mode. I suppose part of that probably has to do with the fact that all existing ranked modes are on five minute timers and Turf War for five minutes would make the first chunk of the match semi-pointless, but there's no reason all ranked modes have to be five minutes long. It would be a change of focus from the existing objective-heavy modes, but I'm fine with that. Variety is fun.Yea that is what I was wondering too. Why isn't there ranked Turf Wars. I guess Splat Zones sort of fills this in but still.
My brother recently took a new Nintendo ID from C- to S+ to see how quickly he could do it, and he noted that while C range teams are almost universally bad, B range is where you'll see a lot of wildly varying levels of skill. If you lose a bunch of times in a row, it really could be that everyone else is bad! What about A and above? Sometimes my games make no sense at all. Actually, whole ranked system makes no sense sometimes. It is exactly how commandercool described. You have those numbered losses causing you to derank. And getting even 'on-par' is suffering.
Have you tried plotting the quality of players (or just your team) vs the time you play at.How? Quality is hard to gauge. Even with statistics. K/D/A means nothing (not that there is visible assist count in Splatoon).
Have you tried plotting the quality of players (or just your team) vs the time you play at.
Ranked Turf War would be 8 Aerosprays every time.
a time when all of us can play together lolSomeone Ping me on IRC when this eventually happens.
I'll repeat this again: You don't lose more points than you win unless your team is outbalanced in ranking.
On equal ranks in rank B and A, it is +10 or lose -10.
On equal ranks in rank S, it is +5 or -5.
On equal ranks in rank S+ it was I believe +2 and -2.
On any rank, if the enemy has higher ranks compared to yours, you will gain more and lose less.
On any rank, if the enemy has lower ranks compared to yours, you will lose more and gain less.
Basically it is not bullshit.
Do you know how much the difference has to be? I had (pretty sure, I guess I could have misread it) a game just now where my team was B-/B-/B-/B-, the opponent was B-/B-/B-/B, we won and got +10. I mean, obviously that's not a huge difference, but how big does the disparity get before it starts to matter.I don't have hard numbers to support my post. I'll have to note few matches with difference in scoring.
Anyone wanna splat on Sunday?
When did you have in mind? I'm probably on board.I'm pretty open, so whenever works for most people. I'd prefer morning EDT because football, but it's only week 1

I got people lining up wanting to go get lunch, so I'm probably going to play another handful of matches and then take off. That's cool, I was probably going to wrap up at like noon
it's a lot of fun.
gg Picochilla. Was quite fun in Turf Wars to see people sticking around. こぜっと was someone I've recently known and I had originally joined too. Too bad we didn't got queued 1 game together in same team.
Has anyone seen the new EU Splatfest theme yet ...it's just sad.Afaik it hasn't been announced yet. At least not when I checked this morning.
I didn't know that the EU one was last minute, I thought it was being announced for next week. lol.
Would have been cool if the Splatfest would have been globally.Fixed.
In between edit 3 I think it is after all the 1-shot ability since in weapon test mode the direct hit does 125~128 damage for me. So I guess bye bye blaster play.
Nono, read my previous post with link to JP patch notes please. The blasters are only nerfed to avoid the 1-shot splash damage kill with gear upgrades. The direct hit still splats for 160+ damage.
They nerfed my DynamoAnd there was much rejoicing.
Roller nerf is justified. Though imo not really a nerf but more like balancing adjustment. Opposed to most guns needing accuracy/skill it was pretty easy as roller user to one-shot people no matter how you aimed as long as they were inside the cone reach.I never really felt that was a problem with the normal rollers, just the Dynamo. Most of the bullshit I've seen from the normal rollers I've played against I usually chalk up to ping differences since a good 95% of the people I run into during the hours I have a chance to play are Japanese, which are one-shot kills from distances I simply can't get a kill from when I'm testing against the training dummies. If these balance changes makes it so that happens less frequently I'll be a happy camper because that sort of thing almost never happens during Splatfests.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I recently noticed that shooting at the feet of enemies with a blaster does almost no damage at all. For example when you're in very close combat. The damage is like 25~30. So if you're trying to splash damage, don't aim at floor/feet.
Seen the Pirates vs Ninjas scoring on Twitter rt by Forza. Popularity voting means nothing to win, it is all in the game wins. Because x6 :V
Guess they first thought it was cool and fresh idea.Yeah, so that inspired them to change it from 2x to 4x and that was fine I guess but having it be 6x now is kinda ridiculous
Btw, wasn't the first Splatfest heavily influenced due to popularity causing the victory instead of the actual wins?
We didn't. They are called Callie and Marie on our end, except I refuse to use those names.
Helepolis why do you hate pun?
I really wanted to play but I got off to a very late start and now I don't think I'll have time to easily finish. I feel bad for neglecting Splatoon lately.Pretty sure the Splattershot is based on the original Super Soaker, with the Jr based on a generic tiny squirt gun (except big lol)
Also, I'm working on an Inkling cosplay for a con this spring. It's mostly done, I just need a gun. I've been told a lot of the in-game guns are based on real Super Soakers. Does anyone have any insight into which ones? If the guns they're based on are still in print that would be great.
With the .96 Deco I run usually run two Ink Saver (Sub) primary and that gives me enough ink to drop the wall and fire my weapon twice, which is enough to splat just about anybody. It's still kind of a niche trick because it's slow and easy to escape from, but it expands the uses of the wall quite a lot from team support/escape only to something I can use offensively by myself.I don't use Ink Saver (Sub) at all with the .96. Ink Saver (Main) is always useful since it guzzles ink, and while I haven't played with the buckets in a while the standard Slosher and Sloshing Machine both benefit from it. As a bonus, the Studio Headphones are favored to roll Special Duration Up which benefits your Kraken on the .96 and Slosher. The Jungle Hat also gives you Ink Saver (Main) and Ink Saver (Sub) as its preferred subabilities, but with the .96 I find that isn't necessary and that hat is the opposite of fresh.
I don't think you need to dedicate a whole set to using the wall necessarily, I notice a big difference after just one Ink Saver (Sub), but I imagine that varies some by weapon.
I pretty mush need help for an idea of my Slosher Deco build. You're over specializing. Diminishing returns kicks in hard when you stack that much (mainly on the mains) and about the only weapon where people go nuts with stacking one stat that hard is the E-Liter...the other exceptions being the freaks who go nuts with either Defense Up or Run/Swim Speed (especially Splatlings).
Because that stuff needs a ton of ink (especially the Splash Wall) i really have trouble using that pretty well combined because u mostly can only use 1 Shot after using Splash Wall. Thats why i am thinking of an Ink Saver-Build. The question just is: Which way is the best?
It's only either 3 Ink Saver (Main) as primary and 9 Ink Saver (Sub) as Secondary or 3 Ink Saver (Sub) as Primary and 9 Ink Saver (Main) as Secondary. Which way is actually more efficient for Slosher Deco?
I actually run of many times to that problem that i can't splat someone because i run out pretty fast of Ink after using the Splash Wall on a full Ink Tank and i pretty want to fix that out in thatw ay that Main and Sub using less Ink to get more use of Splash Wall for taking down opponents in thight places. Without that i really have a problem really fast.

I generally prefer Ink Recovery to Ink Saver as it benefits both your weapon and its sub, but with the ink hogs Ink Saver (Main) lets you get in more shots while waiting for the delay that keeps you from recovering ink after throwing a Splash Wall.
I will not be surprised if Team Ninja bags popularity past the 60% mark this time. I just hope the actual fights with the Barbs keep the wins as close as possible~ XD
(All of this is spoken as a former Aerospray RG main.)
Nintendo has been pretty good at balancing the weapons with patches, so I don't know that anything is really "OP". That said, they tend to balance with ranked in mind, so Turf War ends up being a little bit of an afterthought. The Aerospray is certainly very good at Turf War, although it needs a decent team backing it up to actually win matches.
I've actually had a lot more success using the Aerospray in ranked than in Turf War despite thw fact that it seems to exploit the Turf War ruleset just a bit. But I think that's mostly just my playstyle, I know it's very popular.
Posts about the Pokemon splatfest just popped up on my twitter feed, I expect this will end in bloodshedI don't really care about either (haven't played since Red/Blue/Yellow), but I did borrow Blue when I was younger. I actually owned Yellow :V
I'm not sure what the buff to Opening Gambit is.I think it increases the effect the main Gear buffs by a 1/3 if they are Movement Speed Up (Human) or Super Jump Speed Up. I could be mistaken though.
The new (or new-ish, anyway) side ramps really open up the map thoughThose are from ranked mode, if you weren't aware. Those that play both turf wars and ranked (as opposed to the players that only play ranked) had been asking for those changes for since the map came out. They added it back in March with the 2.6.0 patch. There are also those high barriers added near the bottom of the ramps for extra charger cover.
Alright, FINAL SPLATFEST complete. My little squid is a Callie Queen with 1377 Callie Power. I used my trusty Aerospray MG for most of it and got matched with some great teams. I feel like 75% of matches were on Moray Towers, but hey, what would the final Splatfest be without a ton of Moray Towers sniper turtling? The new (or new-ish, anyway) side ramps really open up the map though, so it was still quite a lot of fun. Not sure if I'm going to come back and play more later, but I might.
