Well, let me rephrase that. There's good fanart, but no avatar-worthy fanart (if you know what I mean). And most good pictures don't have the scythe at its full length (important to me since it's the coolest part of her design).

Kurumi 'gaurded' the lake of blood for unknown reasons, perhaps after LLS she got fed up and did something else with her time, however, for this to be true Kurumi must have taken up the position as gaurd of the of her own will.
I believe she's also good friends with Elly (I've read it somewhere), so perhaps she resides at the lake to keep in close touch with her friend, I dunno I makin shit up again.

Well, it's hard to be a Rin fan when absolutely nothing canon about her exists besides half of her body and what her two shot types were called. I still kinda like her because I have a thing for the forgotten characters. You know Romaine LeTouse from Apollo Justice? I rallied him in a popularity contest and got him to seventh place. In fact, the reason I started liking Gengetu was because even among PC-98 characters she was particularly pointless (although I definitely like her for more than that now).

I don't really know why I like Sariel so much. I have an obsession with wings, angels, and badass so that might factor into it. I also really like that shade of blue.

my forgotten character of choice is the Yin-Yang orb.. it's like a companion cube, except that it can harm you (and you don't destroy it later).. but you must treat it well, for you need it to play HRtP and it will follow you through the game..

I doubt it. Even if that did happen, they'd never be considered forgotten. Hell, Rumia's never appeared since EoSD outside of StB and she's done quite well for herself.
The problem is more that the majority of the Touhou fandom refuses to acknowledge PC-98 like it's a rule.

Seriously, though, I do think that the older characters will gradually fade out with time. ... or they'll be completely shafted and rehauled a la PC-98. This cast is too large to maintain.
That said, the fandom will keep them well and alive anyway.

The other windows characters get fairly regular attention and cameos in stuff like the fighting games and StB. Not to mention ZUN has made all manner of spinoff works like SSiB and CiLR to expand on them, so they're doing allright. But, like Ruro said, if ZUN continues with his 'one game a year' plan, the current cast is going to get really huge really fast, and being able to develop all of them would be quite a task.
And lastly, all you pc-98 fanboys/girls can start whining when I see me some more decent Seihou fanart. Even VIVIT only has like 10 pictures of her all over the internets...

Yeah but still, ZUN can only make so many characters before he starts running short on ideas. Then again he doesn't go incredibly in-depth into the characters' backgrounds so he's no doubt got a lot of different powers and abilities to go through.

You know who escaped the PC 98 death? Yuki and Mai. They went and got employed at Samidare's Extra stage. Oh, and some Mr.Ghosties went with them. =3
VIVIT has a nice theme in Samidare.

Bleh. Should have specified that fighting and VS shooting game characters don't count because they have to be playable anyway. I was referring to characters who first appear as playables in a traditional (read: danmaku) Touhou game. I'll admit I forgot about Aya, though, but Rin Satsuki would have been the first since Reimu to start out as a non-boss.

That's actually the charm of PC-98 characters; Since nobody characterizes any of them in fanon due to the lack of it, you're free to interpret the characters however you want. It's not as though fanon personalities had anything more to work off of anyway (although PC-98 Touhous do generally get less personality than the PC Touhous).

Sarcasm. LLS and MS are very good in their own way, although LLS is indeed still rough around the edges.
I never have trouble seeing bullets in MS stage 4 actually. The only time I'm ever dizzied is when bubble bullets cover up other bullets.

I play and like PC-98 Touhou, parts of it are really good. Windows Touhou just completely trumps it, but there seems to be people who absolutely love PC-98, which I just don't really get :P

That's what i usually do. I really like to read doujins and if the characters have been granted convincing personalities it might change the way i look at them. I would say that doujin artists develop the characters based of the "templates" ZUN made for his games. Obviously STG characters can't be too deep (well, maybe in some shooters. I don't know.)

Overlooked characters? This isn't going to be a surprise considering the name I picked, but Akyuu's definitely high on my list. I love the touches of dry humor that work their way into Perfect Memento; I get the impression she's really sharper than she shows. Her perspective is really unique, and her own story is bizarre and kind of bittersweet.

Sorry? I love LLS, but there's some problems with this statement. I know I'm judging by lunatic, but the following are attacks I'd consider "fuck you" attacks:
Elly's blue bullet spam (I've dodged it once. Ever.)
Pre-boss spam of stage 5 Yuka (a.k.a PC-98 books)
Stage 5 Yuka's last attack phase (Sorry, did you not use Marisa? Well SCREW YOU, have a 100% solid wall of bullets across the whole screen that is literally impossible to dodge!)
Yuka's first attack phase (yellow intersecting bullets! With an opening that's about two hitboxes wide! And is open for less than half a second! I dodged this once out of pure luck)
Yuka's final attack phase (this attack is so thick it slows my game down to 30 FPS. I have never gotten through a single wave, nor can I even see an opening. I'm dead serious when I say this attack is the embodiment of BS, and I yearn for the day someone reveals how the hell it is remotely possible to survive)
And Gengetu Rape Time, but it's a little dumb to count time out phases of attacks.
MS is more difficult, but besides Yumeko there's no spots I'd consider BS.

In my MS lunatic 1cc, I beat Yuki and Mai without dying. In the same run I only used one bomb on the entirety of cheeto lasers. Cheeto lasers is simply very easy to screw up, it's entirely fair.

I can't stand Stage 4, the boss(es) I can handle (on Normal derp). I did get there on Lunatic once, but I quit after getting to Yandere Luize, matter of fact I think she killed me once and I got pissed off and went to do something else.

Stage 4 seems to almost always be one of the most aggravating stages in a give Touhou game...
Exceptions for me are LLS, EoSD, and SA.

I think Patty's library is quite tough, actually. I tend to have lots of trouble there but yeah, I guess Satori's mansion is quite smooth compared to what's waiting for you right on the next stage...

Right, here's a copy/paste of my writeup for her when I was bored enough to rank the PC-98 midbosses:
Fairy with a cause (MS stage 1): This one looks just like a regular fairy, but it's a midboss. It's pulsing with power...this girl must have trained every day, increasing her power far beyond what a normal fairy is capable of. It showed too! She had many friends, all admiring her for her message that anyone can rise up in this cruel cruel world and become a midboss! She took her stand against you, fighting for all of fairy kind...but then you killed her. Without remorse, you took her from this world. You just went gaily on your way, off to fight a goddess. You didn't even think about what you left behind. Dozens of mourners...sobbing...all plotting a revenge against you.
And the cycle continues...

Anywho regarding midbosses; what about the fairy that throws words (or at least weird Kanji) at you in SoEW Stage 2? I'm tempted to label her with a name and grant her 'the power to throw her voice'

That's because (technically speaking) Shinki is actually well known in the Touhou community, just like Mima. We're (supposedly) focusing on characters who have even more obscurity then the two of them.
But I will agree/approve of your selection as Shinki being your favorite, as you can see you're not alone on that decision *points to avatar*

IIRC, the guy who made that video drew all of those himself, so I don't think they're available outside the video.
Shame, because outside of (ironically) Mugetu and Gengetu, the guy does some amazing art there.
