Title: The Official Holiday Thread: The Requestioning
Post by: Hello Purvis on August 10, 2010, 08:14:38 PM
So. I've been doing holiday pictures in create.swf for a year now. I really like doing this. But, alas, I have exhausted my original source =[

This is where you come in! You can request holidays for me to make a daily picture for!

THE GUIDELINES

Name of Holiday: "Today is <Date>, <name of Holiday>" Don't worry about the date. I'll fill it in.
Descriptive Blurb: This must be in first person. Write your blurb as though you were personally describing it to another. I prefer it be between 1-5 lines long. Feel free to add quips, puns, profundity, and plays on words. Make it sound like something a person would say! Make it fun to read! Wild ARMs references are a plus.

Some examples!

July 31: Today is July 31, Desire Day. A desire strong enough to summon
Luceid... I thought my desire for holidays were strong enough to be
approved... But Luceid told me, 'Yours is just an obsession, so no go.'
Don't you think he's pretty stingy for being a Guardian of Desire?

July 8: Today is July 8, Adventurer Day. Adventurers are rare people fated
to die unless they continue adventuring, just as sharks must continue
swimming to survive. To protect this rare species from extinction, radio
programs release bits of adventure rumors to spark the adventurer spirit.
Just the other day, they broadcasted news about another floor discovered
in the Ruins of Memory! But this could be just another groundless rumor.

June 5: Today is June 5, Mist Day. Mist is scary, because there might be
a mist spirit hiding somewhere. The dunes are scary, because there might
be a sand spirit hiding somewhere. The sky is scary, because there might be
an air spirit hiding somewhere. Come to think of it, there isn't much point
to a day just for mist when you're scared of so many things.

April 30: Today is April 30, Jeans Day. Jeans are often called denims
lately, but who cares? Rose will be rose and jeans will be jeans, I say.

April 2: Today is April 2, Pillar Day. Pillars are the most important part
of buildings: psychologically, architecturally, and geomantically. That's why
we must thank our pillars and give them a nice pat. The pillar in Baskar must
be patted by many people today.

FAQ

-Can I use real holidays?

You sure can! Just adhere to the guidelines, and give me a real date for them. And, um, don't ask for it too far ahead of time.

Can I make a touhou-related holiday?

You sure can! Just adhere to the guidelines.

Can I make forum-based holidays?

You sure can! Just adhere to the guidelines. And make 'em good. I'll be fairly picky with these.

Can I have some more examples to work from?

Okay. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,701.msg56780.html#msg56780)

And that's all there is to it. Get crackin'!

Today is _____ ___, Holiday Day.  Today is named in honor of
the declaration that holidays can be created not just by one's ancestors,
but by anyone who wants to celebrate something.  It's almost like
everyone has a little bit of magic.  So today, I'm creating Holiday Day.

Today is August 18, Tengu Day. This day was created in response to the stupidity and horror of the 6th and the 9th (18 is divisible by both 6 and 9), and is meant to be as joyous and celebratory as possible. You can celebrate it any way you like, so long as you do so while seeing the best in everyone. No one's perfect, after all, but everyone has some good in them. Taking candid photos is also encouraged. At the end of the day, I like to look at the candid shots I took, and laugh heartily. Caw caw!

And yeah, it's okay to request specific days, just give me a poke when they come up, so I don't forget.

Today is qqrbrrbll, Clown Day.
Everyone goes on about how clowns are scary these days, but when I was a kid I actually liked them.
Though, maybe that was just me keeping a balloon dog as a pet...

Today is MMDDYYYY, Zombie Day.  Despite being undead, grotesque
terrors of the night, zombies are a common staple of modern-day media
in films and stories.  If you're worried about zombies, just be sure to
carry around some salt - and whatever you do, keep them off of the lawn.

Today is ______, Sweet Candy Day. There was a strapping
young lad who captained an equally strapping young ship by the
name of Sweet Candy. She travelled all across the seas of Filgaia
but she met a terrible fate at the hands of demons. Though alive,
the heartbroken lad ended up drowning himself. Sweet Candy forever!!

Today is _________, Acronym Day.  Today we celebrate by making up acronyms.  But I've always wondered if the word acronym is an acronym for something.  Or what came first - the acronym or the full phrase?  It's a real chicken or the egg mystery, or Mystic Yellow Shrimp Tastes Extra Really Yummy.

"I know where you live" made me crack up.

Today is octarine, Irony Day. Irony is a powerful force,
but curiously unrelated to magnetism. Ironically,
nothing is done to celebrate the holiday. Alas,
speaking of it is a failure in my celebrations.

favorite shows and books! Except the librarians,
who sort out a different sort of reference...

If everyone calls something an egg, but a dictionary says it's a rock, the magic of language means the users are right and the dictionary is wrong.

Colloquialisms redefine language.

Today is August 31st, the National Day of my country.
This day is to celebrate freedom from the grasps of the British Army.
This is the 53rd year after that event back in 1957.
I guess it's enough that the land where I am born in
was invaded for more than 446 years.Let there be no more invasion...

Today is wafflesston, Crossdressing Day. Crossdressing Day got started by a small-town mayor of Filgaia that liked to do it in secret, so he made it a holiday after getting into office. Lots of people expected it to end after he left, but there are still groups that celebrate it, especially teenaged girls. I'm not entirely sure what to think about that.

Should I try to have any idea of how that relates to the day name?

Today is plugh, Hummingbird Day. Hummingbirds are really unique - they're the smallest birds, the only ones that can hover, and I'm pretty sure they're the only ones that drink nectar from flowers. Then again, bees do a lot of those things, too... does that mean hummingbirds are actually giant bees?

September 12: Today is Grandparents Day. This day celebrates grandparents of the present, and honors the memory of those whom have past. Our grandparents have done a great many thing for us, bake snickerdoodles, accidentally teach us how to swear, and care for us in their own way. May I one day be great enough a grandparent to fill their shoes.

Today is [hernk], Eavesdropping Day. Today we celebrate people who discuss personal matters in public places. Or even in private. In fact, most of the good stuff you can eavesdrop on is said in private. Which is why you should use sign language when discussing something you don't want anyone else to hear.

Today is [diamonds], Nostalgia Day.
Nostalgia is a feeling that many people
seek both to embrace and to avoid. But
nostalgia is literally the pain of going
home. Which is weird because I've never
hurt myself walking into my house. Well,
except for that time I ran into the door.

It is another version of the same game, but I don't know how to access it.

On time I wanted to play hopping tenshi and suddenly instead it was yamame hopping around with bouncy nets. Now it is just tenshi again. It may very well be that the newest version doesn't even habe yamame any more.  :derp:

Today is bees, Inexplicable Crossover Day! Today celebrates the bizarreness that comes about from bringing together two unrelated works of fiction. Or maybe a work of fiction with reality? No, that's usually a different category... either way, things get really weird if there's lots of differences between them!

When you have a Father who believes that the Moon Landings were fake and the dinosaurs were killed by humans with laser guns who just arrived from Mars to populate the planet or a Mother who believes every deity, including God and Jesus were aliens, it's not that bad.

It is tyrannical to demand the return of all students immediately after New Year's... but because the holiday is so short in length, I won't be able to go anywhere... for the first holiday in a long time I'll be staying at home with nothing at all to do :/

Today is yukata, Lateness Day! Today is a celebration of that little mistake of getting somewhere a little after when you're supposed to, usually leading to embarrassment and maybe getting yelled at by people that wanted you there earlier. Er... wait, or was this yesterday's holiday? Oh well!

Today is ******, Oddball Day. Everyone knows that there are things in life we can never understand. Like why people hit each other with skulls. And why people love someone who has nothing in common with them. And so we celebrate these things on this day. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without something... odd happening... Right?

Today is uobg, Dick Punching Day! The traditional punishment for marital infidelity in Filgaia is a good haymaker to the groin. Lots of people think it's just cruel and unusual punishment these days, but today still celebrates this highly effective deterrent by providing an opportunity to practice delivering them just in case! And trying to avoid being on the receiving end, for that matter...

Today is \m/ (^A^) \m/, Obscure Music Day.
On this day we honour the countless great musicians that nobody has ever heard of because they are too busy listening to the new Justin Bieberlake single.
No matter how niche your taste, turn up the volume and be proud of yourself!
Let's dance!

Today is Broken Heater Day. We've all been there haven't we? Winter hits hard, windows freeze up and your heater decides to cut out when you need it most. For some it isn't too bad since piles of blankets aren't hard to find. But what about that one guy who lives in a shop? What could he possibly use to keep himself warm...

You'd think Alice would get out of the way before telling Shanghai to splode.

Today is ____, Fruit Juice Day! Fruits eventually rot, so in order to preserve their great taste, you can make juice out of them. It's usually a good idea to add something extra, too, if the fruit you're juicing is ordinarily sour. I wonder if the same could be done with meat, too?

Today is Troll Day. No, not that kind of troll. You see, many people have a laugh out of somebodies mis-placed hopes; especially when it can't possibly be anything else BUT that thing you never thought about. So, let us do something really evil to someone today... And announce our latest rip-off!

Today is MMDDYYYY, Miscellaneous USB Device Day.  Humans are brilliant at inventing things that plug into other things, and USB is a great combination of a low-power supply and a data transfer method.  A miniature fridge?  A singing flower?  A reading lamp?  A crystal ball?  A USB hub, which - if you like USB hubs - allows you to plug a USB hub into your USB hub so you can use USB devices while you use other USB devices?  Not to mention it's shaped like a doggie bowl.

Today is MY MIGHT CANNOT BE MATCHED, Roleplaying Day! Today, we all pretend to be someone or something else. The really devoted fans even come up with elaborate disguises. Since there are a lot of really devoted fans in Filgaia, it can get really confusing at times... but that's half the fun! At least, that's what they tell me.

Today is KWEH, Tactics day.
today is the day where we must carefully plan out every move, and then enact on those moves. Most people cheat, and try to change tactics as things progress! Then again, they say no plan survives contact with the enemy.

Today is WARK, Imaginary Animals day.
Today is the wonderful day where we celebrate our companionship with the mystical creatures that don't actually exist. Sadly, unlike real animals, you can't pet them, or rub their belly. I wonder if they feel lonely because of that.

Today is KUPO, Apathy da-*shot*

She's still back at home trying to figure out how to write "Walk in, take books, leave." In a way that both doesn't restrict her movement, and also seems more detailed than her usual plan of "Walk in, take books, leave."

Today is VIVIVIVIVIVIT, Time Capsule Day. On this day we get a container, fill it with things that represent the present (and things we just don't want anymore), then bury it so that every year, people in the distant future can dig one up and be totally confused as to what the hell the stuff in it is. We would dig up a time capsule from the distant past, too, but there aren't any yet since this holiday was only recently established.

Today is February 2, Groundhog Day. On this day, a time loop occurs, traditionally broken by positioning lights around a groundhog's burrow so that it will have exactly half a shadow. Nobody knows why, but this half-shadow somehow breaks the time loop. In recent years, though, people tired of this tradition break the time loop simply by staying up all night.
