Title: How did you discover Touhou Project?
Post by: CirnoFan on July 30, 2010, 12:52:17 AM
I discovered Touhou Project when I didn't realize it.

BEFORE I DISCOVERED TOUHOU PROJECT

I was intrested in Sparta Remixes, Red Zones, Hatsune Miku, and (sort of) Lucky Star. One time in March/April of 2010, I was searching for another NO sparta remix, and I found this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQb9w1mqxl4
In the middle of the video, I saw a character that looked like Konata from Lucky Star. Then at the Suggestions Tab, I was looking for a video that had the Konata like character, and I found this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdqV14_q6-s&feature=related
It was a crazy music video that doesn't make sense! At first, there were many people that disliked the Konata like character. I favorited this video, though. I looked at some related links after that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THnRByFR_Kk&feature=related
I thought that Konata like character was a bad guy! Then I translated the title of the video that featured the Konata like character, and got "Cirno". I searched for Cirno, and favorited 2 more videos about that same music video.

Meanwhile at another forum... Someone told me about that I was favoriting videos about "Touhou Project". I checked it out, and I became a fan of Cirno and Touhou Project. However, I've never mentioned it in that same forum the user told me about "Touhou Project". I'm about to discuss it here 100%+ more than the other forum.

Share your story on how you discovered it!

Back when I listened to Final Fantasy music arranges, one of the bands I listened to (Crow's Claw) had arranged two albums of Touhou songs. I liked the music, but never bothered to look for the originals.

Then, when my old laptop crashed and I lost all the stuff on it, I decided to check out the sources of those Touhou songs. The first one I checked out, incidentally, was Common State of Innocent Violence, an arrange of U.N. Owen Was Her?. I loved the original, decided to check out some other songs (I think the order was Septette for a Dead Princess and Green Eyed Jealousy), and then decided to actually start playing the games.

I went through 15 minutes of "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, then I was hooked.

That's also probably part of the reason I like Flandre so much, being that she was my first exposure to Touhou.

I was screwing around on the internet and I came across EoSD

That's right I was before PCB :I

(UGH not a video, I was thinking of some other series.)

I could almost call this a multi-step process, but I'll skip most of it. Basically, I was following the WRYYYYYY thing on Youtube, and I stumbled across the "Touhou Parody #6" video (you know, the Mac commercial parody with Sakuya and Meiling). That was my first exposure to Touhou, but I wouldn't get really into it until much later. Here's how that happened. Back when I played competitive Smash, a mod on Smashboards posted Kefit's SA Stage 6 Lunatic NDNB video in the Ice Climbers General Discussion thread. I watched it and thought it looked awesome. And the rest is history.

I discovered what Touhou was last summer while checking out random memes. Yep.

Oh man, I remember when I was first starting out, and it was so hard to remember the characters' names... The only ones I could remember were Marisa, Meiling, and Patchy.

I was gradually exposed to it...like, first, someone sang Tsurupettan to me.  I came across Marisa Stole the Precious Thing and a picture of Youmu, although it never really got to me.  I think at some point, I had a vague idea of what it was, but I never really looked into it until later.

And then, I discovered Cirno's Perfect Math Class and Kero (9) Destiny last September.  There was also a picture of a Cirno Yukkuri in the gallery of this person I watch on Deviantart.  I remember seeing it and being like "OH GOD WHAT IS THAT."

For the longest time, I kept getting the Aki sisters and the Prismrivers messed up.  It's all good now, though.

I discovered it through Pixiv.
As a fan of Umineko and Rozen maiden, things tend to flow from there. I was mostly exposed to it through Yuha and Paseri's artwork.

Pretty interesting to see how other people got into Touhou :)

My first exposure was the music. I'm a hardcore(!) stepmania and FFR player, and there were a couple songs on the original FFR engine. A couple of dBu's stuff, IOSYS's Hare Hare Yukai parody (I recognized that lol, but didn't know about Touhou), etc. Of course, I didn't know any of these songs were from Touhou. I do remember someone asking where a certain song came from (I think it was Brain of the Moon that they were asking for) and someone mentioned Touhou. It's there in the back of my mind, but I didn't think too much of it.

At the same time, I frequent teamliquid.net, a forum devoted to professional Starcraft gaming. Back in 2004 or 05, someone posted some high score run video of Ikaruga, and I thought "wtfffffff that's awesome", so I ended up on wikipedia. Clicking several links led me to Touhou, and I downloaded the PCB demo to play. Failed hard haha, didn't know the hitbox size, didn't know focus existed, etc. Anyways, I played it a bit and gave up because it was too hard. Oh, did I mention that I did not connect this to the FFR songs at all? Touhou was mentioned there, I played Touhou, and it didn't click.

The third exposure was what actually got me to play. This was like 3 or 4 years later from when I played the PCB demo. At this point, I was at the peak of my FFRing (placed 5th in division 3 of the last official FFR tourny, if anyone cares haha), and I knew my FFR songs. There was even one called 4chord Touhou by Kil, and I knew that there were a couple (UNKnown Girl, Lunatic Eyes, etc by dBu) that were from Touhou, but I still didn't really know what Touhou was.
Here's the trigger: Someone posted another Ikaruga score run on the Teamliquid forum (it randomly pops up lol), and I think back - oh I remember playing a bullet hell game. Maybe I'll give it another go. Look up bullet hell on wikipedia. See Perfect Cherry Blossom. Click on link. Touhou Project. TOUHOU. It clicks. I facepalm. Ok I actually didn't, but I really felt dumbfounded when I realized it. And that was it.

When I first started playing Stepmania I found a HUGE collection of anime/J-pop songs all together. I never actually made it through all of it, but I found Overdrive in it and thought it was awesome for being so crazy. I later found Marisa Stole the Precious Thing in the same folder and that's when I found the Touhou Wiki. I started reading about Reisen, Alice, and so on and I thought it was awesome and really interesting, but the huge number of characters turned me away since I thought it would be too much to have to remember. Well I had shown Overdrive and Marisa Stole the Precious Thing along with Tsurupettan to most of my friends and my friends later found more IOSYS PVs that they then showed me. I started to learn the characters via the PVs and finally decided to give the wiki another shot. That's when I found out there was a Touhou fighting game as well (two, actually) and as much as I like shooters I've always liked fighting games more. It was also then that I found Walfas and that's what REALLY got me into the series.

Do you know where I can download the files?

Also I discovered touhou in this order: Pictures - TV tropes - Stepmania - Fanfiction - Touhou wiki - Non-Hentai Doujinshi - Walfas Comics - Shrine Maiden- Songs - Fan Game - Game

I really truly started getting into Touhou at Fanfiction when I read all the good Fanfiction of the series that I know of and was looking for something to read, then I became a True Fan when I started listening to songs on youtube, reading this site and playing the Fan Games. Although I suck at the official Game (I refuse to play easy or continue), but I'm getting better.

I wish. I lost it when my harddrive died and after that all the stepmania sites I used to use were down. I've been looking for it ever since but haven't ever been able to find it.

I knew a girl over at Canada who was a lolicon. She put a bunch of pictures of them, thankfully safe. Many of them were of Touhou. That was my first exposure to it.

Two years later I decided to make a LP of a game I never played before. EoSD became that game... and from then on I was hooked into the series.

Back when I was really into Rozen Maiden, I discovered Desuchan (this was before they had a Touhou board). Someone had done a Rozen Maiden version of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, and posted it on the /alice/ board. Googling around, I found IOSYS. This naturally led to the Touhou wiki, and then Touhou itself. Decided to start with the most recent game, which at that time was Mountain of Faith, and was hooked from that point on.

I used to be way into Axis Powers Hetalia, and there were a bunch of videos that were parodies of a couple IOSYS songs.  The first one I saw was a parody of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing.  I was kinda interested, so I looked up the original.  I ended up thinking all the characters in it were made specifically for that video, for some reason.  But I forgot about it pretty fast.

Then, when I first learned how to change my keyboard interface to Japanese, I was messing around on Google Images, and was wondering why the heck a blonde witch kept popping up when I searched my name in katakana.  I recognized her from the video, and searched around a bit in order to see what series she was from.  I read the Wikipedia article on Touhou, but didn't care much.

I forgot about Touhou again for a while, until there was a parody of the PV for Neko Miko Reimu.  When I went to watch the original of that, I ended up getting trapped in watching a bunch of the related videos [common ones like Cirno's Perfect Math Class, Kero⑨Destiny, etc.].  That was when I finally started getting interested.  I played PoFV at a friend's in February of this year, and that's when it really started.

I also ended up reading the Touhou wiki during my study halls, so I learned all the characters pretty fast, although I still have problems with which Prismriver is which.   :ohdear:

A combination of that first Extra run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg) of IN that pops up when you search Touhou on Youtube, seeing the Touhou imageboard in my Type Moon days on Desuchan and wondering what this fandom was about, and my friend playing IN in front of me and trying it myself.

I came into the fandom right around when MoF was released, and never looked back.

I never looked much into Rozen Maiden actually. :V I was just there for the Tsukihime and F/SN stuff. Also, Suiseiseki's heterochromia just looked weird to me, which was another putoff from looking into the series. Also, I don't like dolls very much. >>;

Oh. But ... Suigintou in Ouverture is just ... grarggh it's so heartbreaking just thinking about it ...

Sorry about the derail. I still get choked up when I think about when Shinku calls her "junk" for the first time, and Gin-sama just flips out.

My first exposure to Touhou came from a sped-up video of a Super Mario 64 TAS, with Marisa Stole the Precious Thing playing in the background as well as a remix of the same made from Mario's voice clips. I didn't really pay it much heed then.

A couple years later, I entered a chat room associated with another forum I visit, and noticed that the message of the day was "JAAAAAOOOOOOO". I asked about it, and was promptly shown the Patchy/Meiling M-1 and given an explanation. Then I went to the wiki, etc.

I would always hear bits and peices about it. then one day, on the Kernel Panic Mod (http://"http://www.moddb.com/games/kernel-panic") of the Spring Engine, (http://"http://springrts.com/") I discovered the secret Touhou faction. It didn't have an official name, so it took until the dev happened to be in a game with us when I asked about it, he said they were from Touhou, which he was a fan of. I just left it at that for about a year or so, and then I just randomly decided to get it a few months ago.

I was browsing some forum somewhere when a thread happened to catch my eye. It was titled something like:
Quote
Touhou thread #7: "But I don't feel like getting cut to pieces!"

There was a link to the wiki inside, but I was all intimidated by how much stuff was on the front page, so I forgot about it for a while. But I still kept an eye on the topic, and when someone posted some totally awesome Ran pics, I decided I had to see what all it was about.

The rest, as they say, is history.

I was wandering Youtube and looking at Mushihime-sama videos when I wandered into a video of Imperishable Night Stage 1 with Mushihime-sama music.

Aalso, when you realize the "massive cast picture" is just the characters from PCB, it's amusing.

Some guy played Imperishable Night all the time at my high school; the pretty patterns drew me into the game, and despite never having played a shmup before I found IN wonderfully addicting. It wasn't until many months later that I discovered the vast wealth of Touhou-inspired fan material, starting with the scanlated doujins on Gensokyo.org and branching out from there.

My Japanese friend showed me a couple of videos... of which these are Touhou related:
1. Windows sound effect remix of "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjgu0DBCtcE&feature=related)
2. McRoll
3. this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_ABtMGhYvw)

8 months later...
Video #3 + McRoll --> U.N. Owen remix --> EoSD extra --> GIL's EoSD lunatic Stage 6 run
Video #1 --> Marisa Stole the Precious Thing --> Cirno Math, Kero 9, etc.

Then, some time later, saw my friends play SWR and IN.
Thinks *if they can do it, why not me??*

About a year ago I watched McRoll... but I had no idea what Touhou was at the time.

A few months later I became obsessed with Mushihimesama which led me to try out the demos of PCB and SA, but for some reason I didn't see much in them.

Later I came across I video with 'UN Owen Was Her?' in the background.  I searched the song and found the video posed by PineappleDisciple and favorite'd that video and the one with the remix.  Looking at the comments I finally figured it out, the song was used in McRoll.  I was shocked at the revelation and how good the song was.  I decided to give Touhou another shot.

That time I played EoSD and UFO which are my favorite games today and became addicted since then.  I still can't believe I didn't get into Touhou when I played PCB, most likely I was being ignorant at the time about a game with little girls, cute music, and a name like Perfect Cherry Blossom, but it's all good now.

I was quite the admirer of boss battles back then (and I still am), so I searched up all kinds of final boss videos. One day I decided to search up 'the hardest boss ever'. Out came Mushihimesama Futari's true last boss. After finishing watching the seizure-tastic boss fight I started to look at the related videos.

The top related video was PCB Phantasm.

Cue me being hypnotized by Yukari's beautiful spellcards and the most epic boss theme I've heard up till then in my life. And getting a nigh instantaneous crush on Ran. It wasn't until after several gameplay and music videos that I discovered Touhou Wiki and started archive binging. After searching up 'Touhou forum' on Google I came across MotK.

And the rest is history.

I remember that prior to that PCB Phantasm video I once read about PCB on Hardcore Gaming 101 (it is gone now unfortunately). I was just text with no videos and almost no pictures, so I quickly thought it was boring, since I was used of SHMUPS to having either mechs or monsters to raise up the coolness factor (my actual thoughts at the time: "Why are there only sorceress girls? Where are the monsters and giant robots?" :ohdear: ).

Oh yeah, I also saw Marisa once in a MUGEN video before I knew what Touhou was. I just thought she was a random anime-to-game character with cool attacks.

They talked about it a lot on the forums of the community I used to play Team Fortress 2 with. But I didn't really get into it later when I asked one of my friends to send me a link to the games and started playing some of them. I really liked that the characters would talk smack about each other before battles and added something unique a lot of other shooters don't really do: story.

There character designs resonated with me enough that I went looking up fan art and found a bunch of other fan projects and from there my love for all of everything Touhou just kind of grew.

My Touhou journey also began with the oft-watched "THE HARDEST VIDEO GAME BOSS EVER!" video.
Stunning bullet patterns. Tiny hitboxes. I liked that kind of stuff. Better than Raiden clones.
Started getting interested in Mushihimesama too. Downloaded the "YGS2000" bullet hell program.
Saw a site proclaiming something called "Perfect Cherry Blossom".
Soon after, I watched Dracil's Imperishable Night Extra Clear - possible the most watched Touhou boss battle video on YT.
At first, I was like, "Nice theme... nice bullets, why does the boss' portrait show up every couple minutes... why do the attacks have names?"
That's when the obsession began. I began collecting fanart, found a fan remix of Mokou's theme (the dBu one) and lots of other fan material.

Now Touhou is stuck in my head. Even when I am sleeping.

It was either due to being linked to a stage 4 lunatic of EoSD (MarisaA), or seeing Patchouli in Mugen.

I really hope it was the former.

While I was browsing youtube 3 years ago, I typed "crazy game impossible japanese" or something, and I found that:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg

for some reason, it doesn't have the same effect now, I suppose it's because youtube was opening and people discovered games like this, they were like me: "WTF?!"

If I knew the games sooner, I would have spam all the levels + all the extras to look cool. :V

edit: erratum: it xas in 2005, so five years.
I remember the video was at 300k, and now, it's 700k, so much emotion!!!

I was looking around a megaman fansite called "Rockman Perfect Memories" and there was an entry on Megamari. I love megaman games so I sought it out and played it and loved it to. At the time, I didn't even know it was based on anything. That is, until I got stuck somewhere and looked for a "let's play" of it. The guy who was playing it explained all about the characters and what games they were from and so I had to play those to.

six months later

Ryuu: I'm bored I should play that game.

and then I read all the doujin that was on gensokyo at the time in 3 days. yep.

Lessee here, first I bought a random doujin game called Megamari. I thought it was a really cool megaman game. Later on, I decided to try and find out who those characters were, and searched Cirno. Cirno eventually helped lead me to here, somehow.

I am quite ashamed to say that my first exposure to the Touhou Project was 4chan's /w/ a long time ago, when I saw pretty wallpapers of Yuyukers and Youmu. Then I was like, "hey man what the heck's this" and the answer was "TOUHOU" so I looked it up, found a way to get the games, and then went to town, starting with the first game - HRtP.

Way back in the day AMV Hell 4 had a Pokemon parody of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing.  Looked up the song and downloaded it from Limewire, then forgot about it.  Then much later I stumbled upon Mcroll :derp:, learned it was from a game called Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. I wikied it and saw it was from a series of doujin games.  My eyes glazed over and I lost interest.

Fast forward to 2009 I got a job as a night security guard, so I had plenty of time to waste online.  While searching for parodies of APH, I stumbled on some IOSYS flashes.  Things quickly went downhill from there.  My first Touhou game was Touhoumon; I didn't get into the games proper until much later, probably around May of 2009.

I've said it before and I will say it again, TOUHOU SAVED ME.
I was watching videos on night (videos I saw over and over again) about a game, so, I was thinking "I wish I could...I don't know, see some anime, or play a game like this one, one that gets me entertained and has...good music" ( I SWEAR GOD I SAID THAT) So, stucked in my boringness, I saw a video that was a parody of Marisa stole the precious thing. After seeing it, I thought "well, I'm not THAT much into that kind of videos, but it was good" I saw some comments on youtube that said  something like "The original is called Marisa stole the precious thing" and so, I watched the original. It was...actually addicting. Then I saw that there was another video with the same characters. It was Alice-dere xD Even though it was...you know, I found it really cute. I cried at the end. I HAD to know what was it. And after checking the comments on the video, I came across touohu.
And now it's the only thing I think about xD

This is how I discovered Touhou Project in another perspective.

BEFORE I DISCOVERED TOUHOU PROJECT

I was intrested in Sparta Remixes, Red Zones, Hatsune Miku, and (sort of) Lucky Star. I wanted to see a video of Hatsune Miku and Red Zone Combined, and I found this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XieOER3mR1w
I decided to watch the original.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNi4_NAvlbs
I thought "are those charcters boys or girls". And when I saw the deatailed faces, I thought the dancing characters were their crush. Then I discovered the "You dare not agree with x" meme. The first one I saw was this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8EjLAViYgs
Then I watched this one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1vUKcvkKFA&feature=related
The character did look like the one from the second video link from this post. Then I got kinda addicted to Flandre Scarlet.

Later...

I went to Touhou Wiki, and saw that Cirno and Flandre Scarlet are from the same series! I was surprised!

I was searching around for sparta remixes, and I tried to see if I could find a Dr. Octagonapus sparta remix, and I found an absolutely epic one, so I subscribed to the guy who made it.  He updated videos frequently that often had traces of Touhou in them (of course, I didn't know at the time).  I first started getting exposed through videos like this:

[Aww, it got deleted by freakin' Youtube.  Anyway, it was a music remix using clips from Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star, and the Chirumiru commercials]

I then encountered this in the related videos section of one of this guy's videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCK7Qu3bNU

Still, I wasn't affected by the ubiquitous presence of Touhou stuff.  This went on for a while, including a small cameo in this video at 0:51: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXcieUVLz-I&feature=related

The video that finally won me over was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ajt1-vyChk

This is the same video, but not THE original uploaded by the creator, since he was suspended from Youtube.  But on the original, the video description specifically mentioned a character by the name of "Cirno".  I looked in the comments and people were saying that this "Cirno" was from a game called The Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil.  I looked in the video tags and sure enough, there were the words "embodiment of scarlet devil".  I looked up videos of this game on Youtube and got hooked.  I saw videos of many of the characters, and became particularly attached to Cirno and Flandre.  The rest is history.

Ok I'll finally bite. The first time I heard of Touhou was when someone linked this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MU9Ui4807r4) on a website I used to visit. Then I discovered shortly that the original Marisa Stole the Precious Thing was boring as shit and that it was based off of a really hard japan-only shooting game. I tried to ignore Touhou to the best of my abilities over the next few years. However, thanks to there being a Touhou parody of everything I couldn't avoid it completely, so eventually I gave up and started researching it one day when I was really bored.

Almost a year later and I'm still here sucking it up on Normal mode. Well, it's better than my old WoW addiction at least (at least that's what I tell myself so I can sleep at night).
Title: Re: How did you discovere Touhou Project?
Post by: JEV3 on August 15, 2010, 02:40:35 AM
For starters, one of my friends was an avid Touhou fan, my first exposure was watching the stage six boss of SA and telling him I'd never ever be able to play that. That didn't stop him from sharing the music, and once I heard WAVE's choral Border of Life remix I started listening to as many Touhou songs as I could find without really knowing what any of them meant. I don't even remember what I listened to back then, it was completely random, I just know that it started with WAVE. One thing that particularly stood out was when he said that if I were to spend all of my free time just looking at the songs, fanart, fangames, etc that exists for Touhou, I'd never run out of material.

Me being broke and my friend being generous, there had been times where he would buy me a game to introduce me to a series. For my birthday, he decided to introduce me to Touhou with a legal copy of Perfect Cherry Blossom, where Border of Life came from. While I had already become quite a fan of the music, I was still absolutely positive I'd never be able to handle that kind of gameplay, and didn't really like shmups besides... so he had me try out the easiest Touhou game in the series: Lotus Land Story.

After plenty of effort, I managed to beat stage 5 on Easy, and moved on to Mystic Square. This was the game that really got me hooked and still remains one of my favorites in the series. I started using Marisa's character exclusively instead of Reimu, and I became quite fond of the little girl that sent dolls after you in the third level. Shinki was my first stage six boss, and probably my best opportunity to know what to expect from the series. My friend made the purchase and I proceeded to play all five PC-98 games while I was waiting.

The rest is history... well for me. He basically taught me how to play the game, explained several of the memes, tried to help me steer clear of spoilers, and gave me a heads up on the shipping. (NSFW stuff is a major turnoff for me, and my favorite characters were Marisa and Alice, so yeah) He also introduced me to the EoSD characters, which for some reason everybody seemed to know about except for me.
Now I own Touhou 1-9.5, I've beat every game I own on Normal, and 1cc'd Lotus Land Story (on Normal). I've put his claims about the Touhou fan material to the test, and almost every day I'd pick out a touhou vocal remix on youtube and share it with family and friends. I also celebrated Cirno day by planning a massive prank for a community I administrated which involved a ton of admin abuse, wreaking havoc on the themes, anime-themed smilies, and a lot of angry forum members.

I've been lurking here for a while, but I wasn't originally going to join these forums until I'd beat the MoF-era games, but at this rate, that'll probably be a good while.

(NOTE: McRoll doesn't count, I didn't know its song came from UN Owen until after I'd been introduced to the games)

I may be the special case.

Four years ago, I saw a friend of mine play touhou (it was th08 Normal).
It looked interesting and fun and challenging, so I played it too.
I didn't care much about the characters and the story back then.
Nowadays I mostly play the games and only listen to ZUN music.
I still don't care much about the characters and the story, but now I do research on them.
The other things I do related to Touhou is negligible.

The End.

Maybe, if my friend was playing something like th07, it would have took a longer time.

What a boring story.

Story time~ (Not really)

A long time ago I used to browse 4chan a lot. I kept seeing the names "Perfect Cherry Blossom" and "Imperishable Night" mentioned in /t/, so that got me curious.

Then, someone posted a link to a video of IN's extra stage. I really like shmups, and the music was awesome, so...

Searched a bit about Touhou, found the wiki, found paletweb, and #sm. I remember entering the channel and asking if I should buy PCB or IN first, as I really wanted to try the games. Then I was told to get PCB first.

I used to play RayStorm a lot back then, and since I mostly used the R-Gray 2, I immediately picked MarisaB since she had lasers too. Later I would discover lasers are not that cool.

Been playing the official games and lurking since then.

Well, I used to frequent a geocities site that my friend had, and she was looking for the full version of this song, Legend of Hourai (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95AhW5fBKT4) (she only got a snippet at the time). That's probably the first contact I have with Touhou, strangely.

Then on some Asian forum that I also used to frequent, some dude posted the Stage 3 theme from IN, and although I didn't know what it was, I thought it's a good track and saved it. (I thought it was a world map theme from some Asian RPG at the time)

Then, when I was searching for information about "Hong Kong 97", the greatest game in the century (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oka1XfJuSc8), I came across this Taiwanese site that proclaimed that "Perfect Cherry Blossom has nothing on HK97 in terms of difficulty" or something like that. Intrigued, I found out about Touhou and downloaded the IN demo (which was the newest one at the time), and the pieces started to come together. The rest, as they say, is history.

I felt like elaborating on this a bit since I'm Nazrin bored.
At first, after finding EoSD, I just watched random Touhou vids. However I didn't know the names of any of the other games, besides EoSD, and subsequently had a hard time learning the names of the characters outside of the scarlet devil crew.

Then I found these videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0DtWxADsks and since they focused on the scarlet devil crew I enjoyed them, then I checked out the original comics on danbooru, learning more names with the help of tags. Oh, I've been thinking through this a bit now. I don't quite remember the whole story. Let's just start that since 2006, I knew about Touhou as those games only lunatics play. And I didn't like shooter games really. Guess I didn't have a pleasent history with shooters in general. (like Ikaruga!)

But anyway, in 2005/2006 Youtube remixes of all types where really popular. Well, they still are, but that's not the point. I found all the stuff from Nico Nico Douga and liked it. Including the mandatory Marisa Stole the Presious Thing and all sorts of U.N. Owen-mixes.

Also, I've been playing a lot of osu! for a long time. So I'll guess around 2009 I started to notice ZUNs music from his games because they were playable in osu!. This all ended up with that I had to at least try one of the games. I took Subterranean Animism. And loved every bit of it.

I had always had a blind eye towards Touhou.

Mainly because most of the time I saw it, it was always blended in with other japanese-like craziness.

Took me a while too get a good idea of what it was, but I didnt become a fan until I joined another website that had a sub topic all about it.

Most of my friends on forums and the like played/liked touhou, I looked it up got sort of turned off by the difficulty and the art of it (sorry). Then maybe a year later on a whim I gave PCB a shot and had the time of my life.

Eh, ZUNArt takes a while to grow on you. At first I thought the art was terrible (and some of it legitimately is - EosD!Sakuya says hi.)

I have to say though, PCB has some of the consistently best art I've seen in the older games.

I have to say though, PCB has some of the consistently best art I've seen in the older games.

That is true...

WARNING!!! POSSIBLY POINTLESS CONTENT BELOW THIS LINE!!!

Just to put it out there, my order of playing Touhou was:

PCB: Art was okay and I enjoyed it quite a lot for my first time playing (got to Alice on easy and used 2 continues :V)

IN: I really loved it but getting enough time points usually means dying once or twice per level at max... (well for me it does)

SWR: Sh*t myself at the thought that Touhou had a fighting game, the art was magnificent aided with the fact I suck at but love fighting games, became addicted to that for about a month.

Unthinkable Natural Law: Because I saw it when looking up footage of SWR (Note that I saw the new characters here before playing the games they first appear in bar Cirno, so that ruined it a bit  :derp: )

MoF, UFO, SA: Basically at the same time. Didn't like MoF's bomb system much and I'm still scratching my head as to why my bombs were TINY when fighting Kanako   :/

EotSD (Yes surprisingly was one of my latest): Hated the fact that you couldn't see your hitbox so a lot of guess-work was in order however I love the SDM crew so that motivated me. (NOTE: I saw the SWR picture of Sakuya before the EotSD one and boy was I surprised!)

IaMP: Since I got over the other fighting games I barley played this one at all despite it being the first one of the fighters.

My order of playing was really scrambled so that messed it up but yet I still love it from the loli to the colorful danmaku regardless xD

... ... Holy crap, I honestly think that's not too far from my playing order. And the hitbox issue in EoSD made me (somewhat reluctantly) grab the patch.

I regret nothing.

It won't get out of my head now... Sorry if this is OT and/or in the wrong place and/or has already been answered recently but just following up my LOOONG previous post.

MoF, Reimu B: At Kanako Reimu's bombs went insanely tiny (A bit bigger than her sprite) on what I think was her last spell card on easy. I haven't played it again in ages and I'm just wondering why it does that ???

I was surfing TVtropes and remember a nintendo game (an RPG I think) with lots of enemies being mentioned.

I got curious about the game one day and clicked on the link that led me to the Touhou Project page.

As it turned out... Touhou was not that game, I still don't remember the title.

The stage 6 boss's last spellcard weakens your own bombs in every game.  In EoSD-IN they simply aren't harmed by them like the Extra bosses, in MoF-UFO their damage is lowered and they clear out considerably less bullets.

in 2005/2006 Youtube remixes of all types where really popular. Well, they still are

I'm seeing heaps of people with Youtube remixes as their starting point for Touhou. I might have been living under a rock or something but I found one remix that was of Alice's theme in PCB however never knew it. About 4 weeks of absorption into Touhou it was only THEN when I found the UN Owen remixes and the like :S

I found out from the infamous U.N. Owen Was Her? Insanity videos...  The one with... a certain clown mascot in it...  I found the music interesting, so I started listening to remixes of U.N. Owen was Her? and eventually found EoSD.  It made me a fan of bullet hell SHMUPs, of which I now widely enjoy, helped me expand my musical tastes and I generally thought it was a lot of fun!  Needless to say, after I started enjoying the series I stumble upon a huge fanbase, which has sucked me into the TOHO BLACK HOLE!!   :derp:

I'm very happy I found that video.  :V

I saw my friend playing Megamari, fighting the last boss(I didn't that was the last boss until later), and after he won, he told me about Touhou, starting with EoSD, specifically, the character names. I was stuck on Patchouli for about half an hour, but got every other name right within a minute. (Or so I thought, as I recently learned that, apperently, Cirno is pronounced like Seerno, rather then Kirno) It went from their, looking up Septette for the Dead Princess, as I loved that song, then seeing UN Owen in the related and loved it, then I really started caring... to the point of playing Touhou at his house when I got the chance.

Been a fan ever since :) I learned of it from Megamari, and went from that :)

(Short Term Memory SUCKS) I then found people were saying the bullet games were CRAZIES so I tried Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and got hooked on Yuyuko, Youmu and Komachi.
Then I played PCB demo (without realising it till I got to stage 3 and it ended )

and a couple months later I'm a big fan of Touhou series and it's characters :D

Really, I don't remember. Probably I was introduced to it by pooshlmer, during one of my quests in search for cute anime girls pics. After that, I probably got attracted by the characters design and decided to find more info on touhou wikia, and youtube videos. The rest just came naturally.

The only thing I remember is that it makes a lot of time, probably happened in 2004.

On an image board about cute anime I noticed a lot of special threads with so awesome and cute characters I didn't know, I decided to about them. And every reply about each one of the threads pointed me to touhou.
The thread that "did it" was a Momiji thread. After that I decided to get a better look at those games and I started with the first one, Highly Responsive to prayers. It was so addictive, I played all night straight and finished. Then I went for the shooter games. And I suck at those. I do manage to be good enough on the fighting games and... Here I am.

I've seen some Touhou culture on the internet without knowing it every once in a while, such as random pretty girls wearing elegant clothes on people's signatures on some forums. I also saw the awesome Mcroll. But oddly enough it was the games that really made me aware of Touhou's existence. Some people at my college were trying out MoF on the college shared computers and I tried it out. I eventually found out that it was part of a series called Touhou. I looked up the main characters Reimu and Marisa on the internet and got into the fandom from there while playing the games as well.

Overall, I'm very happy I found Touhou. It has vague characterization and absurdly simple plots, but the nutty gameplay, vast array of attractive characters, inspiring world of Gensokyo, and incredibly exciting fandom give a lot of entertainment.

I guess I first stumbled upon Marisa Stole the Precious Thing (in another video, not the actual flash) and McRoll (ugh it needs to die) a few years back, but it didn't really catch my interest. Some time later, I was looking up Ragnarok vids and I saw a sprite edit dance gimmick and I realized, "Hey, it's that song!", so I looked up the real flash for MSTPT. I got hooked.

Then just this summer (Eastern summer, not Western summer), on a whim, I decided to look up Touhou. I found it on Wikipedia, YT and Touhou Wiki. Since the latest entry then was UFO, I downloaded that and... my head asplode.

Since UFO at the time was too hard for me, I got SWR (not knowing UNL was already released). It was nice, but got boring after a while, so I looked again for more of the shmups and apparently, UFO was "the hardest" in the opinion of many (well, SA is harder IMO, but whatever), and IN was the easiest, so I got that aaaaand yeah now I have every game except for StB.

Two years ago, it was my now ex-boyfriend that discover Touhou. Mainly through Marisa stole the precious thing on YouTube. He then became addict to Touhou music.

Having the whole day Touhou musics in background, I searched a bit and decide to test the trial version of the games. It was fun and all, but that was not at that time that I became a Touhou fan.

It was just few months ago. I was bored by all the XBox 360 games. All of them are too easy, without a pixel-accurate gameplay, and I became quite nostalgic about the 2D era, where games were really hard. And so I remembered Touhou, and decide to give them once more a try.

And here I am now =^_^=

Er... uh... I discovered Touhou though... erm... Fakku.

...

Anyways, but then I read a doujin dealing with Suwako and Kanako (I don't exactly recall what happened, but Suwako ended up dueling Kanako, and then at the end, Kanako flew into the sky with Suwako standing on her feet. It was heartwarming), and it piqued my interest in the series enough to track down more doujin.

However, the doujin that sealed my interest was "Though the Wind Cries". After that, I started reading the fanfiction (my first one being UsuallyDead's Sanae story, since I was specifically looking for Moriya shrine fics), and then the music, and then the webcomics, and finally I picked up a copy of IN.

Incidentally, Suwako, the character that really got me into Touhou, isn't even in my Top 3 favorite characters (Top 5, maybe): mine are Mokou, Cirno, and Komachi.

I blame Rhythm Tengoku / Heaven x Touhou videos.

Then in OSU! I downloaded an interesting sounding song (Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon) with a super typical loli bunny girl in the picture (Reisen). I was like, "Umph, probably some nicovideo crap. I totally don't like it >.<". I ended up loving that song, only because It sounded similar to that Nico Nico Douga medley (turns out that that song includes "Overdrive" which is based off Reisen's theme song).

I googled the name of the song, got led into Touhou wikia, and finally into Overdrive, Cirno's Perfect Math Class, and Marisa Stole the Precious Thing. From then on I couldn't escape anymore :smug:.

Funny thing that I didn't discover McRoll untill waaaaaayyyy after I had already settled into the fandom. I still found it extremely silly, and only because it's a cool remix from Flandre's theme I really don't mind.

I also remember that when I was reading Orin's article on the wiki, I found "She is paired very often with Chen for obvious reasons.". I then read Chen's article, and (because I knew hardly anything of her) I believed that Chen was a boy. Silly me.

Hey, if I have already posted in this thread notify me. I have short-term memory

I got introduced to the Touhou fandom through.... neopets. I don't normally go on the site unless through roleplays, but a certain member there is quite a big Touhou fan during fandom roleplays.

She first introduced me to the songs like Bad Apple.

Then told me to look at the videos of the games themselves.

Then she actually went on a roleplaying spree with her characters. Usually Mima, Marisa, or Yuka.

I just go with Gilgamesh.

And well, yeah, she's the main reason why I saw Touhou in the first place.

I was scrolling through musical automatic Mario World levels.
Then I got the 11 minute one.
I loved the Touhou songs the most out of it.
So I searched for them.

Then I forgot about Touhou.

Then it resurfaces a year later when I find out a few friends are into it.
Flash forward to today, and I'm among the best TH players in Oklahoma.

Hello, I'm new here!  I got into Tohou from one of my friends over at Shmups.com/forums.system11.org (or whatever the url is).

Great to be here, got a ton of questions, dunno where to start, total noob, etc etc.

Hey there, and welcome! A good place to start would be this thread (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,6593.0.html), which outlines the most important rules of this board in particular, and the site in general.

After that, just click around, read all the boards, lurk, get to know the feel and tone of the place.

Everyone here's pretty friendly and welcoming, so don't be shy. Hope you enjoy your stay!

Well, there's this "HARDEST VIDEO BOSS EVER" video floating on youtube that first informed me the existence of Danmaku games.

Then I researched a bit more on it and found that Touhou is generally one of the more prominent and easier ones.

Then I realized several of my friend's friends play the game, so I decided what the hey, I'll give it a try.

It was November of last year, and as of now I'm still playing and aspiring to improve myself.

I discovered it when just browsing around. I found it located in various places on the web and browsing around image sites.

I eventually found the Touhou wiki and started learning all I need to know. It's been about 11 months since I discovered it. And I still enjoy learning and playing it.

:derp: It started when I was in elementary school, and couple of my friends were into anime. So I start watching anime on YouTube since I discovered such a thing existed. Then I find Mcroll... That video... I wish I got into Touhou in a different way than Mcroll.

Ridiculously enough, the first I ever heard of Touhou was when I was reading Wikipedia's list of catgirls. Chen was on there, with a link to "List of Touhou Project characters." I looked at that page, but didn't pay it much mind. Much later, I discovered TV Tropes, which occasionally reminded me of Touhou's existence. But what made me start getting into it was YouTube's related videos feature: various Vocaloid songs > Triple Baka > Kasane Territory > Cirno's Perfect Math Class (I somehow skipped Kero ⑨ Destiny). After that, Touhou began its slow creep into my daily web browsing.

FUN FACTS (or "How much more of a noob I used to be")

1. When I discovered it, Wikipedia's list of Touhou characters had the official illustrations for each character. I love how despite the fandom's best efforts, the first I saw of the cast was ZUN-art.

2. Back when the Wikipedia list was all I'd seen, I got Ran and Chen's ranks mixed up. In retrospect, Chen being Ran's master is a really weird image.

3. Despite being my catalyst, CPMC wasn't the first Touhou-related video I watched. TV Tropes linked me to Tsurupettan much earlier.

4: Upon seeing the Touhou Wiki's list of the official games, all the decimalled installments confused me into thinking Touhou was one game that ZUN kept releasing new versions of.

Oh man I can hardly even remember now..... I was always vaguely aware of its existence but never actually understood what the hell it was or played any of the games until about....a year ago?

I remember first watching Marisa Stole the Precious Thing as my first exposure a good few years ago though, and between that and a few other videos I was led to believe that Alice was the main character of the series.

Other people liking Touhou music was probably what led to me taking an interest, though. Most of it, honestly, sounded like basically all the same thing to me....until I heard Nue's theme. That incredibly eerie, chaotic, fearful melody seemed almost entirely unlike any of the other songs I heard, and made me think that maybe there was something else to this whole thing.

I think at some point afterward I played Subterranean Animism, and between the memorable soundtrack and some of the cooler characters, MY FATE WAS SEAAAAAALED.

Similar to my story.

I was searching for difficult videogames, because I was getting bored of snoresvilled mainstream ones. During my hunt I played I wanna be the guy, and I wanna be the fangame, after more hunting I found a thread on Kongregate about hard videogames. Someone linked that "Hardest videogame boss ever" youtube video, I checked it out, researched "danmaku" after seeing it mentioned in there, found wiki's article on danmaku, gave Touhou a shot since it was the first danmaku game I saw on the PC platform, I became a member of these boards either that day, or the day after, I forget. My dedication to Touhou only grows as I expanded my awareness of it from the canon games and music, to the arrangement bands, to the fangames.

I'm having difficulty enjoying the books though...George RR Martin they are not.

Back then, I was very interested (or probably hooked up) into three things: Music, Guns, Girls. So I was on Danbooru back then trying to make my Vocaloid picture collection to reach 1000. From there, I stumbled upon a picture of Kagamine RIn with Shrine Maiden cosplay (I didn't know it was Reimu, yeah) but never care too much about it. Later, when Miracle Gumiracle came out, I'm interested in playing the song and google some sheet for it. But I'm always linked to Miracle Hinacle videos and watched it for some time and become hooked to the swaying (I almost do it every time I hear a music).

From there, I knew IOSYS and looked for more videos and one day, I found Neko Miko Reimu video and (almost) screamed "THIS IS IT! THE ONE RIN WAS COSPLAYING!" and started to do some search in WIkipedia, Danbooru wiki, and Google until I found Touhou Wikia. At first, I was only interested in the sheet for Beloved Tomboyish Girl (After watching Cirno's perfect math class of course) but somehow become addicted to Cirno for some time (My earliest Touhou picture collection consists of 300+ pic of Cirno), and later, interested in playing the game.

The first game I got was PCB and I played as Reimu (Because I don't know much about Marisa back then and know nothing at all about Sakuya). My friend who already knew Touhou said to me "You know, it's like all the girls in the series at least carries a MAG-58 GPMG with 1.000.000 rounds of... What was the caliber of MAG?" and that thing just motivates me to play Touhou (Sorry, I still prefer Military world when compared to Touhou). I have played some Danmaku games before Touhou (Raiden, mostly) and choosed the Lunatic difficulty without thinking. When Cirno came out, I was very excited and Bam, I went "Picchun~" even before her first spell starts (I don't know about focus mode and hit box size) and I was like "What the hell was that?"

After that, I just can't leave Touhou. I deleted almost all Vocaloid pictures and deleted my old L4D just to have some extra space to put TH10.5 and 12.3. I became more and more addicted until I said to my airsoft team "Don't you think our MEU outfit is boring?" My friend (Who is the one that tells me about girls with GPMG thing) asked "So you got a better Idea?" and I answered (Without thinking first) "A shrine maiden outfit for you, a witch outfit for me, a maid outfit with some pa-" *Slapped*, I didn't get a chance to finish the word but I know that's a very dumb thing to do.

I guess it took half-year for me to become addicted to Touhou

So many interesting stories in this thread.

As for myself, I only know Touhou for less than a year. It was January 2010, I was browsing /c/ and found a Touhou thread there. Interested with the character designs, I searched Wikipedia for information. The part that impressed me so much was this series is practically made by one man.  :o
Long story short, I was hooked on Touhou ever since that day.

First time I was introduced to Touhou was last year on March 2009, when an online friend of mine showed me Silver Forest's Kero 9 Destiny's PV on youtube. To be honest, I was quite discouraged at first when I saw what Suwako Moriya really looked like (ZUN art). It was not until October 2009, after watching Cirno's Perfect Math Class PV that I got really hooked up. Was really surprised and amazed that the whole series was developed soley by one man.  I've learned to actually love ZUN's art, despite what others say, and the original music. I seriously look forward to the future of Touhou, and of course Touhou 13, which hopefully would include Mima and/or Shinki (I wish).

Saw the link to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nb5Ohbt1Sg&feature=related)(Wonder how many people Dracil has gotten into Touhou  :D) in suggestions and thought that i might as well start to search from there, did not go any further that that video though "This is pretty awesome and that music ! :o".

Well since then ive always wanted to fight Mokou but Marisa is so mean and Stole my preciuos things? strips me of almost all of my precious lives so i havent gotten to finalB yet  :(.

September 2008. I was in a coding competition that involves sprites firing bullets. My senpai showed us a replay of his own PCB Extra Clear. Looking at the his reflexes of Reimu down there, I was thinking why would anyone create a game that is meant for an AI to play.  :V

Actually started playing at late November 2008 when I realized that humans were controlling the characters, not AIs. It blew my mind away.

I discovered it through raocow surprisingly enough. One day when i watching his videos (im about 7 months behind on his releases...= ( so it was around february or march) he kept mentioning the mario hack he was playing had references to touhou like a zillion times. when i was fed up not knowing what touhou was so i got ready to post in the comments section. i don't remember who but someone said a certain segment of the level raocow had played reminded him/her of phantasmagoria of flower view. then i remembered raocow had played mariari and as you know it was a fan game. this also furthered my need to be informed and up to date.

i immediately searched to find out phantasmagoria was and when i found out it was a vs game, i wanted get and play it so bad. After playing through story mode (on easy of course...) i wondered what other kind of games touhou had. when i had discovered scarlet weather rhapsody, i was hooked on touhou for good. and through hours and hours of searching, i got almost all the official games, downloaded few fan games (labyrinth of touhou, mariari, megamari, patchcon, and mystical chain) the three official fan books (raw form though, i need to learn japenese sometime...) and ive downloaded many comics about touhou.

i now continue to look for fan games, mostly rpgs but any good fan game will make me happy. i even immersed myself in the touhou wiki community and other touhou forums such as this...(you know after writing this im glad i visited theTARC, you know just to keep my sanity)

Me too man...i still don't remember a lot of their last names... reisens middle (?) name that starts with a U still escapes my grasps.

You know, I think ZUN's art is fugly in the games, but when I actually BEAT one of the games (I think Phantasmagoria), and the characters are painted in watercolors, I couldn't help but think "Wow, ZUN's art is actually pretty good".

I don't think the PoFV ending art was drawn by ZUN.  It looks more like the Hisoutensoku ending art IMO.

IIRC, the ending pictures in PoFV were drawn by alphes, the same that drew the ones for the endings from Hisoutensoku.

Back to the topic, my story is a little long. It began more or less like this.

Like 4-5 years ago (I don't remember exactly when), I downloaded some hentai doujins (sounds gross, but anyway) from somewhere, and then I saw that belonged to something called Touhou. In that moment I didn't care so much. Later I knew that was a series of games for PC, but I didn't care yet. Later I listened the Nico Nico Douga Kumikyoku, where I knew about Marisa Stole the Precious Thing, and in minor instance, Lunatic Udongein and HELP ME, EIRINNNN!). Time later, I saw the miko's performance of Marisa Stole the Precious Thing from the Animelo 2008, After I saw and played Touhou Puppet Play, and I saw some of the IOSYS videos. My first experiences with the official games were with HRtP and SoEW (I wanted to play the games in order), and I think that after I played PoDD, and then I began to listen some Touhou songs (without knowing the characters, yet),

Much time later, I decided to play the Windows games, beginning with EoSD. I played in normal difficulty, and knewing about Cirno's Icicle Fall, I thought that she would be easy. I was dead wrong. She killed me, because I didn't expected that the normal version of the spell would be so nasty (for being a first-timer in that time, it was complicated to pass that). Later I played a little PCB (I only lasted until Alice and I used only a continue, because I wanted to do a 1cc), the same happened with MS, later I played MoF and SA a little, and Minoriko / Yamame also crushed me. I think that in some moment I also played IN, but I couldn't pass to Mystia. That was for my first times.

That was some of my first experiences with Touhou. I don't remember clearly the order of some events, but it's like I remember how I knew Touhou.

See ya!

My first Touhou game was IaMP, which was introduced to me by a GameFAQs acquaintance, complete with a pic showing off Marisa's Final Spark. This was a year or so before I started becoming aware of the series as a whole with the release of the SWR demo. Add some youtube videos and it was smooth sailing from there.

Of course, EoSD was my first taste into the shooters shortly after. Was pretty exciting to hear the originals of the tracks I liked from IaMP, like The Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood.

My first exposure was to Tsurupettan. It was in my mind for quite awhile, because it's kinda catchy.

Then soon followed a lot of somewhat-related videos, but what actually blew me off the spark was a thread in another forum. It was a Vocaloid+Touhou thread and I got interested about Touhou after hearing an awesome techno/folk song on YT (which was named 'Touhou'). Then I kept hearing more Touhou songs (Cirno's Perfect Math Class, Marisa Stole The Precious Thing, Overdrive and etc...). For awhile I was within the fandom but never actually tried the actual game.

During those moments of fandom videos, I stumbled upon a video of EoSD stage 6 on Lunatic mode and I was like 'WHAT THE' and had an interest to play Touhou...

But then, after watching the Overdrive video, I started to play EoSD on Lunatic mode ("Ehhhh? EASY MODO?" - This made me vow never to play on Easy mode, but I gave in to Easy Modo since Subterranean Animism needed you to be on crack all the time to dodge bullets).

And I remembered the first character I read on Touhou Wiki. It was Cirno.  :derp:

The first Touhou related thing I saw was tsurupettan as well. Heard it in the Umineko VN around August last year and looked it up afterwards. Then on 9/9/09 there was a thread on another forum I visit celebrating Cirno day, so from there I heard Cirno's perfect maths class and Marisa Stole the Precious Thing.

Once I had figured out what Touhou actually is, I looked at some replays on youtube (iirc, my first was the EoSD extra stage). I didn't actually get to play any of the games until last March when I got a lend of my friend's PCB. I really enjoyed it and have been semi-addicted to the games ever since. I'm fully addicted to the music though. Touhou arranges are like 60% of my itunes library.

My girlfriend was already  a fan of touhou long before I even thought it existed. We're both fond of yuri and she kept saying how touhou was just this cornucopia of femme-slash waiting to be enjoyed. I didn't really take her seriously. She kept making me watch these vids on youtube like "Marisa Stole The Precious Thing", and a lot more and I can't find myself to care.

Jebus. Touhou had a large collection of characters and I was constantly going "WHO'S THIS? BUT THAT PERSON LOOKS LIKE THIS PERSON. WHAT IS THAT THING."

Didn't stop at the youtube vids, she had me reading yuri doujins and I couldn't even tell Yuyuko from Reimu that time. I felt like a lost cause to being a Touhou fan and it was frustrating me.

She gave up after that, but then I saw her watching some M-1 Grand Prix vids and I found myself laughing at the jokes despite how most of them were in-game. I couldn't stop watching. I mean, I love and really appreciate good stand-up comedy and I thought that the Grand Prix was INGENIOUS. After that ONE video of the M-1 it was all... I NEED MORE TOUHOU from there.

Personally, I think I turned out to be a more obsessed touhou fan than my girlfriend is now.

I gathered some courage and asked the guy what his avatar was from, 'it's Flandre Devil from Touhou' If I knew touhou I would have corrected him. But anyway, since then i came across more and more images of touhou until I finally took the big leap and started playing EoSD :D

And look at me now, no day passes without touhou!

A lot of people seem to start out like "Fine, I'll try this", "Okay, what is Touhou anyways.", "The music's awesome, might as well try the game" and etc. Then two months later they're thinking "Wow, I'm so lucky, what if I'd never gotten into Touhou?"
I myself just do everything. I'd stick with it anywhere from 2 days to 2 months, but Touhou was one I kept. Things like MMORPGs and music usually get old fast, but so far I haven't gotten bored of Touhou. It's too big, awesome and fun to 'get bored of'.

I "Got into it" by watching (Mostly Lunatic) replays of Touhou games for like 2 months wishing I could somehow be extremely lucky enough to get any of the games, lol. By the time I actually was able to play a Touhou game, the replays somehow helped me start. The dodging wasn't usually too hard. It took two days of Easy Modo to actually figure out how to play IN, even after reading through it's Wiki twice.
I've been a college-level reader since 6th grade, but some things just work better by experience. I got addicted pretty fast, hating having to wait so long between games. (I know I haven't beaten EoSD yet, but I realllyyy want PCB! D= )

What made me interested in Touhou in the first place though, was all the references I was missing out on on Youtube. Cirno's Sparta Remix with all the 9s and the glasses(Which apparently wasn't even a reference.), why everyone hated McRolled so badly(Proud to say I heard the original first, but I didn't get why McRolled was so 'bad'), and the obvious fact that 'secondary fans' don't actually ever get references from the games. The longer I went going off of Fanon the worse off I would've been in the end, so.

Getting into Touhou is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Touhou's just so fun to get into and the fandom is great, PLUS we never really run out of material. But the thing is, most of the time it's just the only thing in my head.

I can't get myself working if I haven't checked out sites like this, danbooru and pooshlmer for my daily doses.

That fateful night would become the irreversible turning point for me. I was on YouTube, and in the 'Recommended for You' part of the page, a Touhou video pops up. It was a video showing a fight with a Stage 6 boss, whichever game I cannot remember. At that time, I didn't know what the hell the game was, but that video had interested me. I started looking up more and more Touhou videos, and soon enough this insanity brought me to start searching deviantART and Danbooru for stuff. Soon after, I got Undefined Fantastic Object and played it, marking my first time playing any of the games. I definitely liked it, but I had trouble getting past stage 3 on Easy. And now, here I am, hopelessly addicted to Touhou and I won't be getting rid of my addiction until the day I die.

my introduction to the series was Marisa Stole the Precious Thing :I

For a while my only understanding of the series was "IOSYS" which I thought included Locker Room Productions because those were the only videos I saw. Eventually I talked to the group of people that originally posted the flash videos, and they linked me to some information about it and offered to give me the games, but it all seemed waaay too big and intimidating for me to just get into.

So I was sort of gradually exposed to it over time, and I was able to identify common characters (reimu alice marisa sakuya suika) from memetic videos. Eventually I took up residence on an Etrian Odyssey forum where many of the active posters knew played Touhou (Including Trance, who eventually showed me this place)

What got me into actually wanting to find out about the series was when I was finally linked to the original music, specifically this youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ssmxWJftyo). I realized there was something inherently epic going on in this whole Touhou thing beyond the fan videos. Even though I didn't usually like danmaku shmups (I prefer something simpler like Gradius) I gave EoSD and IN a shot and....

I don't know. Seeing the characters talk, fighting them, pressing on through the story, it made me instantly understand what the whole thing was about. The whole idea of the Eastern Wonderland, where our dreams fuel the universe.

The rest was just me slowly gaining more and more knowledge on my own, reading the doojins, listening to the music, eventually being shown this forum by Trance.

It was during my junior year at high school, two years ago. I met someone in my Creative Writing class (whom I found out later was donut) and he showed me this picture (http://sites.google.com/site/touhoufreak/touhouwj1.jpg) that he had printed on paper. He kept quizing me on trying to figure out the names of who each character was and what stage they would be on,  though I was very reluctant at that time to learn about this series at all. He was also in my Pre-Calc class so I got to do it some more! Then I watched that IN Extra clear everyone has seen a few times, and eventually I got EoSD and played around with it a bit, after he kept urging me to play it. Man I was horrible at that game at first. Took me about 3 months to beat Normal for the first time, which was somewhere in late May of '09.

Now I'm completely hooked to touhou. Thanks donut! (for being patient with me)

Well, I know the first 3 Touhou characters I ever knew about were Cirno, Nitori and Alice... but I don't remember in which order.

Alice was because of a thread on 4chan but I don't remember about the other two.

I don't remember how long ago that was either, but it was quite a while before I got into the fandom itself, and then only really recently (maybe 6-12 months ago) did I actually download EoSD... which was really for the purpose of understanding the story, because I'm not exactly a fan of shmups as a genre :V

Ooh, bad idea. VERY BAD IDEA INDEED.

Oh yeah, I think I remember that my first EVER contact with Touhou was the Lucky Star MAD with Night of Nights. So I guess the first Touhou character I had contact with was Sakuya. But... the first one that I knew the name of, as I recall, was Flandre. It could have been Suika, but somehow I confused her with Yukari at the moment.

I downloaded music once! OH NO!

Guys, he's not asking for download links, and he's not bragging about playing pirated software. It was very matter-of-factly stated. Calm down, everyone.

A lot of people seem to start out like "Fine, I'll try this", "Okay, what is Touhou anyways.", "The music's awesome, might as well try the game" and etc. Then two months later they're thinking "Wow, I'm so lucky, what if I'd never gotten into Touhou?"
sounds like me. kind of. i think i first got into touhou merely to beat flan XD and i still havent achieved my main goal...

...
So I was sort of gradually exposed to it over time, and I was able to identify common characters (reimu alice marisa sakuya suika) from memetic videos...

suika was a common character? i would've thought the 5 most common / known would be reimu, alice, marisa, sakuya, and patchy.

I thought the general gist of what the stickies said was "no mentioning pirated software" i need to re-read it...

EDIT: Aha I knew I had the right idea.

Youtube may have been, as usual, the main responsible of Touhou's discovery, fortunately wasnt a McRolled, but one of those videos with Konata, oh you know what i mean.

Well,I was a big fan of hare and guu when I saw a video called "guu stole the precious thing" and I thought wow the music and song rocks then people said it was marisa stole the precious thing and then I searched it on google I saw the original video and I was amused with the characters so I searched touhou episode 1 and found the anime then there was only one episode so I found out it was actually a game series so then I brought perfect cherry blossom.

touhou took some time to happen to me...

my first encounter with touhou was around 3 years ago. there was a song called Tabula Rasa in a music simulation game called o2jam which i found to be difficult, but fun to play (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lu922_U2u0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lu922_U2u0)) [that's not me]. i do remember searching for it on google, but somehow there was no connection to Kaguya's theme, and i strangely (on hindsight) concluded 'Phantasmagoria' must be some composer. There were other songs based off Kaguya's and Eirin's themes, but similarly, no link.

even when i was simultaneously introduced to niconico and pixiv, the Bad Apple PV didn't leave any impressions, neither did the touhou pictures that were on the daily rankings (my mind just went "cool picture, good for reference, save").

i think it was when i saw the stop-motion Bad Apple PV and a video mushihimesama's final boss when i decided to check out touhou by getting my hands on IN. after confidently pressing Z to 'normal' on my first try and experiencing my first danmaku, i was off to touhou wiki where i read about the characters, rewatched the Bad Apple PV, and then it happened...

now i bust 30k yen on comiket  :V

If it weren't for a friend on Whirled looooong time ago, I wouldn't have discovered this series.

They were talking about a game one day, I asked what it was, she told me it was Touhou. I looked around at some site and downloaded the 6th game, which was my first Touhou game, and I just thought meh.

I played more of the games, and I grown more addicted to it, then I looked at some of the fandom. Damn, I was around Touhou for a very long time, and I didn't even realize it.

My friend Divine-Chan use to talk about it all the time, recommended I started out with Embodiment.
Ever since then I've been a fan, Danbooru also inspired me to look into it a bit more.

I kept talking to a friend who kept on talking about Touhou, and then after that, he got me to play Touhou 12.8.
So I tried it and was like... "yeah...what's really so fun about this?"
AND THEN I realized that my favourite soundtracks were from Touhou, and I started looking up vids on YouTube.
Not much later, I got the whole Touhou series by far, and I'm playing at least one everyday.
Also, I'm playing Touhouvania 2 now =w=

(for being patient with me)
pfshhhhh I used that picture in my presentation about touhou, while saying that's barely half of them (no I didn't count but meh) lolcoincidence.

As for me it was Flandre due to a TF2 U.N Owen vid (U.N Owen nommed a sandwich) then EoSD and the rest is history.

It started about a year ago, and my addiction was with a JRPG called "Persona 4" instead, where I discovered MasterLL's Persona 4 remix video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjf48W3Dg98). The track in the background is COOL&CREATE's Flowering Night remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ea-ZwCquvUo), something I didn't know at the time. But that was my first 'contact', if you will.

My second was a friend of mine sending me a link to the Bad Apple!! shadow art video. I was in an Animation course, so the technique and everything was interesting to me. I didn't know any of the characters, but by the time it reached the 4th character (Remilia), I figured out it's something to do with fantasy (the bat wings). I pretty much confirmed that it has something to do with young fantasy girls by the time it panned to Suika's horn. Still, I was mildly interested, but not that into it. Also, by then, I still didn't know "Touhou" so to speak. The video is in kanji, so I only know they're from "東方". Yea, that was stupid of me... ?_?

Then I discovered Danbooru. And I was there mostly for the Persona 4 art. I know there is a series called Touhou there that's really REALLY popular, but I resisted. Until I found my way to this image (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/518894/) (link is work-safe, site is not).

The character that got me interested in Touhou is Meiling... and it's because I was so confused as to why she's called 'China'. I got to know a few more characters along the way. A little searching around and I can finally name about a little more than half of the characters in Bad Apple. This is like... two days after I got interested in the series. So then, I decide to give the games a try. The first one is EoSD.... stupid random fairies killed me while I was testing all the buttons.

I didn't discover the Touhou wiki till recently. And I only found the link to this forum because of an entry on TV Trope linking to that Kisame boss battle with the bucket theme video, where in the comments, I found the link to here, so here I am!

I didn't know anything about McRoll, honesty... Ronald McDonald freaks me out so I avoid it at all cost. Also, McRoll is like a cross of Rick Roll and McDonald, so I skip ever going there.

Well for me, it was through deviantArt. I was going through their DD when I saw a really cute artwork of Reimu. I had to find out where it was from so I did some research and found out about a Touhou group on the site. I used some links they privided and got EoSD and have loved the series ever since.

(I've played a few others but it's easy to see that EoSD left its mark. =D)

I first saw the game played at math camp two years ago, but I thought it was just a regular shmup. Then someone made a comment, "Isn't she cute?" A year later, I decided to check out this game that apparently involved at least one cute girl. Of course, I was not disappointed (although I saw much more cuteness outside of ZUN's art), but I was also taken aback by the challenging nature of the games. I thought I had conquered all there was to conquer after IWBTG, but oh man...

I tried EoSD first and eventually tried everything else. EoSD left the strongest impression since it was the first, and SA did as well because I got my first good ending in it after many, many attempts.

Will you please stop necrobumping? Maybe during your probation you should read up on bumping dead threads is bad. (http://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,7883.0.html)
