It is a show based on the eternal, fearsome, timeless, unfathomable Elder Gods from Lovecraftian lore, as little girls.

This is the type of ecchi comedy I enjoy a great deal. It makes no pretense of being groundbreaking or a deconstruction or whatever. It's just straight up self-satirizing fun. With the Cthulu mythos.
Might end up being my personal favorite this season.

I wonder how many people actually noticed the Kamen Rider references through out.
Such as Iron Striker or whatever his name was is actually Dark Kuuga, Nyarlko actually using Agito's kicking style, Henshin moves from Kamen Rider 1 (the intro within the first 5 minutes) and 2 (the bath scene entry). It i a goldmine of rider jokes.

Episode 2 was more non-stop mecha and Kamen Rider references. With an amazing Scryed reference. Everything is space CQC. Even fin funnels.

Uuuugh, I hope this show is not another case of good concept, poor execution. The character designs are fantastic, the characters themselves are funny, EP1 was nice, and it's well on its way to be my favorite AotY, but they truly fucked up the pacing in EP2. Everything from the
yuri scene
onwards just feels so rushed.

I've given up trying to keep track of all the references this show makes. There are just too many. Besides which, the fourth-wall breaking is my favorite part of this series.
I'm following a number of shows this season and enjoying them all, but I believe this is the one show this season that I look forward to, and get impatient waiting for subs for it. It's pure fun.

Argument: almost all of them had blue vs red color blasting... then... let's start tearing through every Hong Kong weekly manhua ever... every time a significantly stronger enemy shows up, he will almost certainly start with fist greeting fist scene. I think the question is, why would you not read Lovecraft.
also, he has his own Wiki, and if he watched this today he would roll at how his monsters are being used. It has less to do about Lovecraft than cows have to do with milk. You have better luck reading the Kamen Rider and Type Moon wikis to get the jokes. But yeah, Rider jokes every 30 seconds.

You don't need to know any of the references to enjoy the show - it just enhances the enjoyment. (Full disclosure: I never watched Kamen Rider, but I have read some Lovecraft. The show also references other anime series that you're probably familiar with - there was a reference to "climbing the stairway to adulthood", which is taken from the lyrics to the song "Mirakuru anko-ru", from the Haruhi series)

Specifically, that politicians who advocate censorship based on notions of "wholesomeness" and "won't someone think of the children" are juts cynically trying to advance their own careers. Pretty ballsy to see an anime series that already skates on thin ice directly criticize the politicians who decide the whole ratings system and all.

Really enjoyed the direction in the first few minutes, especially the use of crows to underline the desolation. Good thing that this episode didn't dwell too long on (the still very important point of) how boring Mahiro's life would be without his mini-harem of Lovecraftian beasts/magical girls, and brought us to the climatic battle for - you guessed it - adult games.

Kind of funny how previously, Nyaruko & Co. had to fight a villain out to destroy adult games "for the sake of the children", only to now fight a villain who wanted to horde as many adult games as possible, and in fact decided to crush Mahiro when he said that adult games "weren't for kids." What are we to take away from this? Well, I think the creators were basically saying that wanting to grossly censor all media for the sake of the children and being obsessive about playing adult games were both bad - that you need to exercise moderation, one way or the other, in order to enjoy these things. The references helped pepper the message a bit:

You know, this bit of cream cheese towards the end of the episode didn't bother me. It was kind of touching, actually. Mahiro finally lightens up a bit once he's given a taste of how weepingly dull his bland suburban life was before he met Nyaruko. Sometimes people in your life annoy you intensely, but things just feel boring without them around, and anyway, they're decent people who do care about you. Accepting your true friends for who they are is a part of growing up, but I also think the show did a good job with its anti-censorship message - that being against censorship doesn't mean you necessarily have a mountain of adult games you want to play that you think are totally OK for little kids to play, too. That there can be a more nuanced discussion about the ratings system, which appears to be lacking in Japan (among other countries, I might add ...)
This was definitely my favorite series of this season, and will be sorely missed. I could see a second series working, too - we didn't see all that much of Nyaruko's world, after all, so there's room for more exploration there. Some more cast members could be introduced, too. If a second season is announced I know I'll welcome it. But for now, this show will remain the bright spot of Spring 2012's anime season.

I am pretty sure that Sword cleaves evil shot was a parody of how Sunrise literally copied the shit from one anime to another since Gundam Seed Destiny etc.
and yes, favorite series, probably a lot of different reasons, but my favorite is just Rider references.

Was an average series overall, but amusing enough to care and watch.
