Also it reminded me of the protagonist's tattoo from the first trilogy of the Kushiel's Legacy series, with the red accents and all (even though the cover art pics don't have any red... the descriptions in the text says there should be though >_>).

... they're really not that similar beyond roses and black+red, but the association still jumped to mind.
