Three, so she pretty much watches/listens to whatever I do. I'm hoping this will shape her into a person of taste, but I'm sure she'll be listening to Disney's manufactured shit machine soon enough.

I'm really curious here as to how you choose appropriate toys or learning material for children in the midst of all the marketing crap that gets thrown at you.

If I have a daughter (I don't think I want a son), I'd like her to experience flying a kite or climbing a tree instead of playing with manufactured toys.

My daughter is very physically active, and is already showing a talent for soccer, and the only equipment you need for that is a ball. We go toy shopping together, though - I might think something is super cool and educational but if she finds it boring it's a waste of money. In this way, I'm getting her something I hope will develop her cognitive abilities and she chooses something she finds fun.

If you want your child to get outside and do things, I've found most little kids need very little encouragement to go out and play. It's when they get a little older, like six or seven, that you need to limit their time in front of the TV or online.

I say let her be. Look at her to fall into the traps and troubles of childhood, and watch her as she struggles with problems you may or may not have had. Lend a hand sometimes, depending on how you want her to grow up, but never do everything for her, or she will never do anything by herself or for herself. Allow her to fall victim to lies and propoganda, and let her build knowledge from experience. Watch her build herself up and repair what needs to be fixed, but make sure things don't get out of hand. There is a limit on how protective or unprotective you can be. Restrictions will have to be broken one day so that the world will never get old.
Watch her grow up into someone that you can be proud of, not only for your sake, but for hers. It is your obligation as well as your privilage, and I wish you well. Congratulations.
